  • We all start out learning a few rudiments, some grooves, a couple fills, and then we're on our way to becoming the drummer of our dreams. That is until someone asks us to flow, to speak on the instrument, to "just play something cool". Much easier said than done! In this livestream drum clinic with Mike Johnston, he will be teaching what it means to truly flow on the kit inside a groove, a solo, and even on a pad. Flow is freedom and having absolute freedom to truly express yourself on the kit takes practice, and this class will teach you exactly how to practice it.
    Here's the "Developing Flow in Triplets" lesson PDF to download: cdn.long-mcqua...
    Co-sponsored by Gretsch Drums
    Mike Johnston is an American drummer and educator from Folsom, California. He currently runs one of the world’s largest educational website for drummers, mikeslessons.com, where he offers live and pre-recorded drum lessons. He also hosts 10 drum camps each year at the mikeslessons.com studio in Folsom, California.
    At the age of 21, he received his first major-label record deal with his band Simon Says and spent the next 6 years touring the world. During that time, he received a gold record for his contributions to the Varsity Blues soundtrack and appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman as well as on MTV's Fashionably Loud.
    Mike left the touring world behind in 2006 and has focused solely on education ever since. Teaching and performing in hundreds of clinics and drum festivals around the world over the past 14 years including the Meinl Drum Festival, P.A.S.I.C., The UK Drum Show,The LaBag Show in Paris, and countless others.
    Mike is the only drum instructor in history to be featured on the cover of the 4 major drum magazines (Modern Drummer, DRUM, Rhythm, and Drummer UK) as well as iDrum Magazine and SA Drummer.
    Mike Johnston endorses Gretsch Drums, Meinl Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Aquarian Drum Heads and Audio Technica Microphones.

    Like the best stand up comedians and storytellers, Mike makes an enormous amount of knowledge, insight, wisdom and craft simply "disappear". He draws you in with his warmth, enthusiasm and abilities. What a guy!

    Mike, this was fantastic, thank you! I'd just like to point out one thing: the fact that you are willing to be vulnerable enough to show us you struggling with C and D instead of just not attempting it shows massive courage in today's social media climate. I believe that right there is why you will always have a following, because you are genuine. Thank you for that!

    Thank you so much for sharing!!! I'm trying to develop a lot more freedom on the kit. I'm too meat and potatoes. I have a good pocket. Have toured with a lot of Artist all over the world. Just never got into rudiments. Being self taught, I just played along with records and the radio when learning as a young boy. I'm going to try my best to learn this. I know it's going to take a lot of hard work but I'm really wanting it. Thanks again for sharing this!!! The most helpful video I've found when it comes to independence. Blessings my Drumming Brother!!!!

      Absoultely you could spend months - even years - developing flow and incorporating triplets and different patterns into your fills. All that to work on for months in only a 90-minute lesson? Yes please!

    No Matter what Groove/Rudiment/Fills,Transition etc. you execute on Drums,- there'll never ever be "Flow" If your Motion/Spacing/Dynamics ain't smooth....

  • @mattdrewdrums
    @mattdrewdrums 2 года назад

    Developing flow is as simple as learning how to f***ing roll and play ghost notes. So many novice drummers I see don't know how to do either. When you just play single notes with no syncopation in between, it sounds static and robotic. To make it have some continuity and flow, you need to learn to fill the spaces with ghost notes or rolls. That's it. So, practice your damn rudiments.
