- Please let me know in the comments how far you were able to get with this G'dmmmmn Independence Exercise. The odd groupings will always be the toughest so be PATIENT with yourself when it comes to the threes, fives, and sevens.

I made it all the way to "We're going to be playing an ostinato"
LOL! I love that
That is Hilarious! 😂
Currently 1:24 am still haven’t got it down 💀💀 why is is this incredibly hard
Loved this lesson! I personally flubbed the 5s. Know what I need to practice now! Thanks Mike!!
Yea in all honesty i did it in my head. i was in bed. i still need to replace a head on my set
I studied with a guy who would always say, “you should be able to play this (i.e. anything) left handed too…”. And then he would do it.
How's "not very far" as my answer. But still trying - not giving up. Thank you Mike. Fantastic challenge to my brain.
Now displace the ride pattern
Great exercise. I can do the ride pattern or the kick/snare pattern - but can’t bring them together just yet.
Really hope you share with us your studio renovations! And your new ink!
I would love to see a lesson on Latin grooves :)
I agree ❤
Any way we can get a sheet music pdf for this? Maybe it’s not even chartable though haha. I’m wondering bc this looks like it would take me about a year of practicing to nail
Hey Mike! How about a lesson on using singles around the kit with different dynamic range? Maybe starting quiet and finish loud on the floor tom. Usually my rolls are machine gun like. Chad Smith does those dynamic rolls. Its something that i will start practicing. Great lesson by the way! I will give it a go after work today
I can do right hand and hihat, but totally useless of the rest.
I completely fell apart on 3 😂 Holy rust buckets over here. I definitely need to get my butt back in some sort of respectable form. 🤦🏼♂️🤭🤷🏼♂️
Atta boy! Miss ya dude. Hope all is well old friend
Excellent! I can't stress enough how Gary Chester's New Breed books make this totally possible. Those books have some unbelievable "mind benders" in them.
Every time I have purchased it, someone has stolen it after I showed them what the book is capable of.
Thanks for another great lesson! I admit that I couldn't do all of the patterns with you in real time, but it seems to me that if I could, I wouldn't need the lesson. What I do, is rehearse the patterns at much slower tempo, until I can play them comfortably, and then gradually increase the tempo.
This was my first time catching one of your videos and I really enjoyed this exercise. Although difficult to play it is simple to understand. A couple of lesson suggestions I have are about two techniques I'm working on currently. First, playing fast fills but as quietly as I possibly can. The problem I have is while trying to keep my stick tip never more than 1\2 to 1 inch off the drum heads my left hand, traditional or matched, goes in to a run away motion. It might even be best described as my hand having spasms. I lose all voluntary control and can't stop or control the motion. I hope I've explained this well? And second for fill playing, taking the keyboard charts and playing note for note a matching comp. Then what I'm working on is changing what I'm playing while still complementing the flow of the rhythm and melody to enhance the keyboard playing. What should I be listening for to pull this off? I'd like to be more intentional then experimental at this.
Is it cheating if we have to put it in GScribe and learn it one beat at a time and then memorize each bar separately as if it were a groove? I feel like the goal is to be so independent that you can just "do it" by putting one limb on auto-pilot and then playing the others over it. But I can never learn polyrythms that way
It's cheating to say you did it when you didn't. Doing WHATEVER it takes to accomplish the goal... that's the real sh*t!!! - Mike J
I play freely but it lacks discipline. I suck at this kind of structure and didn't get past the 1's. However, now I feel the need to get some discipline and keep trying.
Proud of you man. Both are needed to maximize your expression on this instrument. I'll give you some of my discipline if you'll give me some of your artistic freedom, lol :)
This is hard as hell!
Great video. What app is on the iPad?
It’s called click
Dang Mike got some new Ink 👌🏼
Thanks for the video! Btw what's that metronome you're using? 😊
It’s called Click
Hey Mike, please keep the jazz courses on MLDC! Thanks so much, Doug M
I can’t even do threes.
Man…I found Simon Says on a Soap grind shoe video (VHS!) back in college. High-level nostalgia right here.
I was right with you until the hits between the snare and bass drum on the first pass through went by at twice the speed I was prepared for.
I guess I'll be working on this later at a much slower tempo. :-)
Be cool to play this exercise Along with Keith Carlock playing Steely Dan 'Godwhacker'
What would be a good songo independence, exercise .
Love to see that
Such a good exercise. I think I got to 5:)
That’s AMAZING! The 5 is a nightmare at first, but so rewarding once you get it down. Glad you enjoyed it 🍵🙏🍵🙏
great lesson ! thanks - do you play each one for a specific number of bars and then resolve? playing in 4/4
It would be great to have more ideas with doubles on bass drum
Ok my head hurts now LOL!!!!! That's a sick lesson
Yeah mikes back, its been a while, i miss the lessons mike teaches..this is a great exercise for beginner drummer like myself,🙏❤️
Amazing video , independence has always been such a challenge for me. Q: what hi hat clutch is that? Thanks so much
Yeah man, that's one of those "simple" exercises that will keep you busy for a while 😉
Mike, can you please tell me what Ride you’re playing there? Killer! - Nick
Simple concept , but very tough to execute... I'd love a pdf please
I hope you read my comment,,,I believe you are the best ,,,,keep up the great work
i don't even try yet but i think i can make up to 4, them 6 and 8. 5 and 7 must be very challenging
No it’s not boring… cause it’s FKN HARD!!
Gonna be great getting a beatbox lesson from Mike😂
I started just after watching the video … For now it took about 30 minutes to get an acceptable level 1 at 85 bpm … I will go to level 2 only after having consolidated my level one 😊
That's awesome. Take your time and be patient with yourself. An exercise like this is 10 min on RUclips and 10 years of my life leading up to filming it, LOL
@@mikeslessons 😅👍🏼
This is great way to get that ECM drumming style working!
Made it to the fives yesterday. Wish me luck finishing today lol 😅 this a good one
This is hard as balls team - Any simpler exercises out there to begin getting this shit?!
No I couldn't do it right away
Good, because neither could I, LOL :)
For some reason the 5 gave me the most trouble. I'm getting it smoother now though.
What is the name of your band?
Simon Says :)
@@mikeslessons awesome!
@@mikeslessonswhat about Man on the Moon??? So a spectacular band!!! 🎊 🎉🥳
Can't wait to try it!
This is a killer exercise for developing comping language for up-tempo swing.
Thanks, great!
7 is the most difficult
Bad ass
Much appreciated my friend!
whats that "session reviews"???????
It's the main feature of www.mikeslessons.com 🙏🍵🍵🙏
⚖️💪
Thank you 👍🥁
“Go practice.” *crickets*
“Go practice.” *blink* *blink*
“Simon says, ‘Go Practice!’”
KA-CHING! 💰
Going to try it today!!
HELL YES!!! Let me know how it goes.
Not easy, got the 1st one!! I have to do 3 limbs at a time first to get the feel. Fun stuff, thank you!!
i’ll be honest, i’m on the toilet. :)
But did you get it?
Pov: drummers who only have a crash cymble😂🙂
Some tatts there mike
With all honesty, I started at level zero and realized that I'm at Level minus 1! 🥲
I appreciate the honesty. Like I said, this one is TOUGH!
