Focus should be on swing and pushing the music forward not talking in each others mouths all the time - show respect, give and take. Listening skills to me comes more in understanding the energy and vibe and adapting to it. Also, if you understand what someone is playing but don't lach onto every note it's maturity and you can hear it. Imo, add some flavor to it instead...
As a rock/metal bassist, I felt that part in my duodenum. I have played jazz with guys who said I was gifted, and I have played with jazz guys (mostly academics) who would sing their preferred walking bass line to me mid song. Once the truly terrible times outnumbered the good times, I stopped answering phone calls for jazz gigs and my life isn't missing a thing for it.

One of the drummers in my school's jazz band acts EXACTLY like the last one behind or away from the kit. He's the best I've ever played with in my life and holy hell is it hilarious to watch him play.
"Don't make everything a Dilla beat." Dude, as a bass player, I howled through the whole thing. This film was easily as funny as Fred Armisen's drum-oriented comedy special. I've played with most of those guys, but never one as funny.
Thin rides are the way to go for me, ive got a 20 at 2025g, and an unlathed 22 at 2503g, theyre much more dynamic and do a better job that sound in comparison to the thick cymbals my friend has which are quite pingy to my ears.
Also the lack of lathing really helps control the wash, the 20 is lathed but has patina from the factory, more wash but still very dark with plenty of stick definition
Omg the 'Highly interactive' one gave me so many memories it's just an amazing feeling when it happens naturally there is nothing than can describe how cool it feels when it happens

The “always vibing” thing isn’t about how he plays slowly. Vibing in jazz basically means being super passive aggressive. Jazz players will vibe other players who they’re upset at for being late, not knowing a tune, general incompetence. The joke here is that this drummer is vibing this guy because he’s late, even though the guy was late because his house was on fire. He gives off very unfriendly body language and kinda half asses his playing. That’s vibing in jazz
This one got too real for me. Had a last minute sub drummer for a gig that ill never forget. I just kept wondering to myself why he was being so passive aggressive, and then this clip came along. Those were the exact faces he was making before during and after the show. I knew I was in for a treat when every person that recommended him felt the need to give me a disclaimer to his demeanor, but I needed a sub sooooo... yeah. never again.
