Matt is a straight up gentleman, much like the other members of SG and PJ. He's found himself in arguably 2 of the most important rock bands over the last 35 years.
Yes. Matt is among the greatest rock drummers of ALL Time...Neal Peart, Danny Carey, John Bonham.... His percussions just makes the music in a lot of ways.
I was always inspired by Matt's drumming on Badmotorfinger. I still drive my wife crazy pointing out his grooves and embellishments when we listen to that album. By the way, he looks phenomenal for 59 years old!
One of my biggest ‘90s era drumming influences! Always loved Matt’s playing style! Steve Perkins as well and Jimmy Chamberlain, whom I’d love for you to sit down with at some point as well!
Always wondered where he got groves from even though I dont drum. He made all Sound Garden songs something special. The guy weathered well he must have steered clear of trouble.
All respect to Matt. Dig his work in Soundgarden but I genuinely hate how he plays classic era PJ songs. Based on what I understand is that PJ wanted someone to play more in the style of The Ramones - basic, very straight forward (no disrespect to Richie). Dave Krusen's work on Ten was brilliant in the true sense of the word. Then Dave Abbruzzese took it to another level. He was the best drummer PJ ever had. He had the groove, funk, swing, character, dynamics, sexy cymbal work and power in spades. He was a ball of energy on stage. Both him and Krusen were very influential in my drumming.
Funny thing is, Matt's more than capable of playing the old PJ stuff the way it used to be played. I just think that, for whatever reason, the rest of the band wants him to play like he is now. I've gotta think that if he wasn't doing exactly what they wanted, he would have been long gone.
If you met Matt on the street and he said he was a science teacher you’d believe it. But in reality he’s a super hero Rock hero making it look so easy. Awesome player!
talking about getting around the kit reminds me as a bassist that plays a 5 string to use the “B” … I’t’s funny how many guys don’t utilize it … myself included…lol …Rick and Matt are legends and this interview inspires musicians all!!
@@mancuniancandidatemyeah, so do you think that’ll complicate the interview some? Or do you think it’s just too late? I mean, he’s well rested. Soooooo. I’ve got a shovel and some time on my hands. Just saying.
As much as I love Matt Cameron with Soundgarden, he is right about the energy factor. He doesn't have any when he plays with Pearl Jam. If you want energy, you get Dave Abbruzzese. He's just as old but has plenty of gas left. Make no mistake, Matt's style with Soundgarden is seamless. But after Vitalogy, PJ has never been the same. I still respect Matt heaps, but he is just not the right guy for the gig.
I was in love with Matt Cameron’s solo album “Cavedweller” a few years ago, and someone told me he didn’t play drums on it and I was crestfallen. He DID play some tunes on the (forgotten?) magnum opus of the band Our Lady Peace from Y2K, “Spiritual Machines”. If you’ve never heard those records, go right now and do that.
Wow, obviously playing for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam is impressive, but somehow being asked to play on an OLP album is even more so. More than any other 90's alternative band, with the possible exceptions of RHCP and Blink 182, the drums were such a huge part of OLP's whole sound. I'd imagine they wouldnt take that choice lightly at all.
Easily one of my favourite drummers of all time. I grew up wanting to be Matt Cameron playing alongside CC and SG. Aside from his playing I always thought he was so cool and humble. This interview confirms that for me. Love you Matt ❤️❤️❤️
I wish he explained why he speeds up every Pearl Jam song… He’s such a phenomenal drummer but he tends to take a lot of the feel out of the Pearl Jam songs. Dave Abbruzeesse played with such feel and power simultaneously
Actually, while I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, I've always thought that even before Cameron joined the band they tended to speed songs up. They are one of the most energetic rock bands out there, but at the same time, they sometimes ruin some songs for me when they do it live, for example "off he goes", but that just me. He's awesome though.
I think it's the band's choice to play like this. After seeing them play with Dave Krusen, when Matt had to leave the kit because of covid, even though he wasn't playing Even Flow at 120 BPM, like Matt, he was closer to 115 BPM instead of the 100 bpm on the official recording.
Allow me to clear this up; singers choose the tempo in discussion and rehearsal with their drummer, (inside rock n roll baseball) based on how difficult the vocals will be ; live, in what position of the set list, and recording or not, tv or not plus whether it’s a hit (they have to play it) or if the band hates (sick of) the song….all of this to say, when the drummer speeds it up, it becomes much easier to sing the full breath (or breadth) of said popular song.
There is no other Matt Cameron. I loved what he did and how he played for Soundgarden, and after Abruzzese, he's the only other Pearl Jam drummer for me.
Pearl Jam plays lots of their songs faster than original. That is a BIG luxury to have as a drummer. Worst case, you have to slow down to album speeds which is something people won't be complaining about compared to having to slow down way beyond studio records which is what you often see with aging Metal bands.
The only "criticism" of his playing that I've ever made was that he overplayed many songs. I like his answer of playing less and letting the song flow. Great drummer otherwise
Great sound for Soundgarden, and I stopped listening to Pearl Jam completely when he started playing with them. Bad style for that band. Dave was the man for the PJ sound
One thing that really seems to separate musicians with this level of success from the rest is intelligence. Hearing Matt talk you can imagine him as a very competent engineer. I don't think "dumb" guys can sustain this type of creative output, or do it with this level of sophistication. Not that you have to be Beethoven, but I would assume the average member of a "tier-one" rock band is much more intelligent and thoughtful than the average person.
Play less?? You don't need to do that, you never overplayed in the first place. Cameron / Shepherd on side two of Superunknown is rhythm section heaven 💚💜
The problem with Matt being in Pearl Jam is Pearl Jam don’t incorporate drums within their songs. Sound garden allowed Matt to be apart of the song and he shined. Spoon man. Jesus Christ Pose, Outshined, Rusty Cage. His drums were awesome and memorable. Pearl Jam is wasting his talents
The 3 greatest rock drummers are Bonham, Peart, and Copeland. Two are dead and Rick already interviewed Sting. So Copeland is longggg over due. And Stewart embraced the web and tech years ago and loves to talk. lol. Get'er done with Copeland, Rick!
Matt, Jimmy Chamberlain, Stephen Perkins, Dave Grohl, Chad Smith, Sean Kinney, & Eric Kretz are each legends in their own right...though Jimmy and Matt are the far more technically gifted.
Matt is being stifled with Pearl Jam. They don’t want the drums apart of their music so it’s boring and forgettable drums on Pearl Jam. Matt is to good for that

Matt on Soundgarden is one of the best rock drummers of all time.
He's always been one of my favourite drummers, I think he's very overlooked actually... especially his work with Soundgarden
Definitely, it's nuts, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden at the same time.
His work on badmotorfinger is unparalelled. Very underrated drummer.
Yes sr
Truth..
Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog. This dude is one of the top 10 most impactful drummers of all time.
Yes. Matt is among the greatest rock drummers of ALL Time...Neal Peart, Danny Carey, John Bonham.... His percussions just makes the music in a lot of ways.
His drumming on the Superunkown album is god tier.
Agreed but a strong argument can be made that his work on Down On The Upside is as good or better.
I was always inspired by Matt's drumming on Badmotorfinger. I still drive my wife crazy pointing out his grooves and embellishments when we listen to that album. By the way, he looks phenomenal for 59 years old!

I was just listening to Geddy Lee's My Favourite Headache. Matt's drumming is killer on that album.
Wow bless you. I didn’t know, will rock it
One of my fav drummers of all time…the influence this guy has on the drumming world is understated
Matt such a great rock drummer, very solid
He speeds up the tempo too much. I prefer Dave Abruzzese feel.
He ? If you think that the band dosent have a say about it, you are clueless, its pretty much discuss in bands to speed up or slow it down

Kruse was perfect for PJ...Abruzazzee was too stiff
Dave was one of THE best grunge era drummers. Sad that he got Character Assassinated by certain Pearl Jam members.
I just googled him to expect he's around 45 and am shocked to see he's 60. Holy cow!
Haaa! I’m 57 and drumming still and it makes ya feel young when you hit the cans… it’s a secret btw! Drummers are timeless, no pun intended.
Simply love this guy!
Greetings from germany!
Best drummer of all time. When Geddy Lee needed a drummer to play on his solo album, who did he call? Matt fucking Cameron.
These questions are amazing! This could go on for hours... My absolute favorite rock drummer. I would love his job, yet I'm so happy Matt has it!
Rick, love these rock-veteran interviews. Great stuff!
Matt is the grooviest of odd times, esp in 5/4. he killed on on Geddys solo release.
If you met Matt on the street and he said he was a science teacher you’d believe it. But in reality he’s a super hero Rock hero making it look so easy. Awesome player!
My personal favorite "rock" drummer of all time. He is incredible as a player and an underrated songwriter as well as being a straight-up gentleman.
I couldn’t even imagine this would happen. Matt is the best.
I love the timbre of the drums with the wood hoops... Now going to order my wood hoops for my Ayotte kit.

On Badmotorfinger his beats are like a pinball rolling and the fills are like when it bounces off of the flippers and bumpers.
Too bad the drums on Badmotorfinger sound like plastic cans. On Superunknown they sound like drums.
@@robertoricci3393 Yeah. Terry Date drums. I like it in the context of the album, but it sure doesn't capture that big, open sound he has.

I just want to send this message out: Jesus Christ Pose is one of my favorite tunes - rockin drums - thank you Matt for creating that groove.
Matt is one of those drummers that the rest of the band writes songs around.
