I never knew Chris Cornell was a drummer himself. Matt Cameron is great in Pearl Jam. But as far as Soundgarden goes, he was born to play drums in that band.

As a guy who moved to Seattle in the early 00s and played in the rock scene here for many years, it never ceases to amaze me how many stories you hear about the Seattle bands from the 90s (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice etc.) being all about the song. Obviously there was ego involved, there is with every band, but those bands just managed to work through that and really step back and care so much more about the song as a sum of all its parts. I wasn't even a fan of the grunge movement when I moved here, and I still rarely listen to those bands, but every time I've met someone from those bands, and every time I hear stories about them, or see them in interviews its the same down to earth, real musician kind of experience.
Matt Cameron’s playing on Badmotorfinger” blew me away. He fit in to every song perfectly while doing cool beats and amazing fills flawlessly. Rusty Cage is so incredible and Jesus Christ Pose is another great drum part
This guy has been a massive influence in my life. Back in the day when I was growing up with his music, I didn't even know his name. I would listen to him every day, it never occurred to me to look it up, didn't seem to matter, I was just immersed in his music. I'm a bit older now, I've had time to look back and reflect on what an awesome talent he is.
Watching this after just seeing Pearl Jam in Melbourne Australia tonight. Absolutely awesome! Soundgarden was one of my absolute favourite bands growing up, Chris Cornell’s voice is phenomenal and Matt Cameron has always been my favourite drummer. Really sad I never got to see Soundgarden play live. However Pearl Jam bloody rocked tonight!
Matt is one of my favorite drummers and I’ve been listening to him for like… 25 years? And I think this might be the first time I’ve ever heard him speak.
This guy taught me so much about freedom in music. Matt never followed a trend or a set pattern. He created really interesting grooves and fills because it felt good to him. I don’t think he was being intentionally different, he just was different. Still is! Love him with Pearl Jam.
I'm a guitarist and I love the sonic interplay between Kim and Chris, but Matt's performance and creativity remains my favorite component of Soundgarden.
I was fortunate enough to see Matt on both the Superunknown and Down on the Upside tours. As a musician myself his style always intrigued me. I could never predict what he was going to hit and when. It always seemed completely opposite of what my brain would think he should/might do. It was always a nice surprise where he landed. One of those rare drummers you cannot “air drum” to haha… Also saw him with Pearl Jam a few times. Just a monster player and a pro’s pro.
Saw them at Lollapalooza on my 19th birthday, and they absolutely stole the show!!! Even the Shaolin Monks stopped rehearsing on the side stage and watched them play in awe! 😂
M.C is one of my top 5 favourite drummers of all time. His off beats & drum fills create a unique style that has never been replicated . I also agree with him that Superunknown is their best sounding album and his playing really stands out. Chris's voice on Limo wreck also is soul taking 🙏
I got Superunknown when I was 14 but you know, Weezer's blue album came out super soon after, and Punk in Drublic and I just got deep into punk rock. In my early twenties I had a stupid long train commute every day and in desperation of running out of albums to listen to I dusted off my old Superunknown CD. The first time Limo Wreck played to my more mature tastes in music and life it fucking destroyed me. It's still one of my favorite songs ever recorded.
I love him so much. I'm still hurting so much from the loss that I haven't been able to listen to SG because it makes me so emotional, I feel like I am drowning*. But, I am so blessed that this is the band that seared themselves to my soul. Every member, from beginning to end, have been good dudes, and also brilliant and unique musicians. And unfortunately, painfully underrated. Gonna be cryptic and say that it's always been clear the respect they have for each other and always will, and anyone who might think otherwise is very confused. 🤐 *Literally sobbed while listening to PJ's "Black" on the radio yesterday. Ever since Eddie performed it right after we lost Chris, I immediately associate it with losing Chris, with Eddie's obvious agony, and it's not like the damn song was a cheer-fest before. My face is like a leaky faucet in my old age.
Matt Cameron is the epitome of style in his playing; he has a signature sound, which is rare. Not many drummers have a signature sound like Matt Cameron has. Two other drummers that come to mind immediately as far as their unmistakable signature sound are Stewart Copeland and Ginger Baker.
One of the greatest drummers of our generation. As a young drummer coming up in the 90s, his style always floored, and confused me in the best possible way!
Ugly Truth is such an amazing song. My favorite Soundgarden era for sure. I get why he's not as enamored with BMF's production. It is really dry, but that's kind of what made it so cool at the time. Everything coming out then was drenched in reverb and room sound. It was such a different sounding record. Superunknown definitely seemed like a mix of the ambience of louder than love with some of the song writing vibe of BMF. Personally I don't think it quite hit the emotional level of Louder Than Love but that's just me. It was the first thing I bought from them way back in 89 and it still remains my favorite.
I think that speaks to how good, classy and dead-on Matt's drums parts were. I've had drummers who you just absolutely had to coach about tempo, fills, timing, etc., but then I've had drummers who just "get it." Matt gets it.
Such an amazing drummer, and so integral to Soundgarden's whole trip. My friends and I were blown away when Louder than Love came out, the drums just jumped out of the mix, if not sonically, as something you had to pay attention to because the parts and signatures were so musical and interesting.
I went to see Soundgarden in LA in early 1990 because they were my new favorite band. Prior to that I thought that Chris Cornell was a killer vocalist, but I didn't realize just how good he was. After that he was one of my favorite drummers.

@@jordanr897 I know, dude. I’ve felt that way for years. It’s painful to watch. He’s so much better than that. I guess he’s just playing for their songs and that’s what they want.

Yes, he looked away like he was trying to compose himself, and seemed distracted when he’s initially answering the next question about the BMF alternate takes. Heavy stuff, man. Worthy of a whole separate interview.
Not to say I didn’t like any of Chris’ solo work, but when paired with Ben, Matt and Kim they just had something that clicked with me on an emotional level. Even King Animal, 16 years after Down On The Upside they were still seemingly perfectly in synch to make the music i will listen to until the day I die. RIP Chris and thank you so much Soundgarden.
