The chain breaker is a puncture repair patch holder. the patches were made of tin with a piece of rubber on one side and some material on the other that would burn slowly when you put a match to it you would clamp the patch with that tool to the tube .Set the chemical on the back of the patch on fire. The rubber on the back of the patch would stick to the tube and fix puncture. I was still using these late 70 s.

Yep, still remember my dad using this in the 70’s! Puncture repair kit for when tyres had inner tubes. Of course nowadays, tyres are tubeless. Awesome little tool.

Does the steel work hardens while you are planishing it?

Not necessarily hardens the metal but the shape is what gives it its strength , it’s like putting a fold Line through a panel before you fold it it’s flimsy then after you fold it , it becomes a lot harder to bend .
