    Yeah, there's a lot of simplicity in this song and it's not the most original, but to be fair they were doing this kind of thing long before other bands did it or did it better. Like, their first ep, from 2004 which was pure deathcore/metalcore, predates some of the big deathcore bands like Whitechapel and Suicide Silence. The other bands may have done it better, but BMTH were always on the cutting edge and setting a bar for other bands. That's my opinion, at least.

      Suicide Season was pretty harsh on him ss well

    • @lexrod580
      @lexrod580 3 года назад +10

      This technique is so unsafe, Oli got his voice so damaged over the years, he dropped his voice several times before 2019, you think why he went to the hospital all the time with laryngitis? He probably became the most reliable patient in the ENT department. This sound comes from the forced whisper to break your clean voice into this roar, and this is obviously damaging your vocal chords so hard. Normal extreme vocals doesn't consist of any whisper and you don't have to force or push anything in this, this is to say simple relaxed vocal fry(distortion, rasp) on your fry cords (this is like two folds of skin situated right over your vocal chords), mixed with relaxed clean voice.

    • @xerodelacroix5552
      @xerodelacroix5552 3 года назад +5

      No, he tore them up on the second album. He was mic cupping and will admit that on this album. Basically, he was whispering in a demonic voice and they layered it a few times. It was the Chelsea Smile "I'VE GOT A SECRET, IT'S ON THE TIP OF MY TONGUE" type screaming was techniqueless screaming. His cleans are actually getting better these days, Jordan isn't the entire band anymore. He's obviously not Kyo or Dani Filth, but he's improved.

    • @YoDabbaDabba_

    I’m a bit late on this but the argument can definitely be made: this era of BMTH was deathcore, while their new stuff is metalcore. I could be wrong, but deathcore is a lot more violent and dark, bands in this era like Suicide Silence, Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin all share this in common - swift tempo changes, grim and violent breakdowns, blast beats, djent, etc.
    Metalcore exhibits more of a clean sound, a more forgiving experience. Bands like August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying and Miss May I are great examples of still being able to be heavy, but opening up into something more positive. When the songs open up into upbeat and uplifting chord progressions, or hearing clean singing, that’s usually a sure difference between the two. Still good! Just different

    I really appreciate how much you go into depth about genres, and artists changing their sound. The "Maturity" label is very interesting. It makes me think more broadly about artists i know. 9:24 about Asking Alexandria - I partly agree. (not a huge fan btw) You're right, they have changed their genre essentially. But a lot of maturity is also intertwined with that IMHO.
    Another band which has been the greatest road to follow with their sound change has been Thrice. Post-Hardcore songs like Paper Tigers in 2003. They released a 4 disk album on the 4 elements in 2007, called The Alchemy Index. The "Fire" album was heavy, "Water" was peaceful, "Air" and "Earth" were blues/folk rockish.
    Now they have progressed into their own sound which many listeners on the journey have really appreciated, somewhat like BMTH. (Wayyy different sounds though)
    Now i need to furthermore look into some favourite artists of mine and look into their whether they have matured, or just changed to stay alive etc.

Said he felt stupid. 😅 But if he wasn't screaming properly he wouldn't be able to get through a full song screaming like that. Ive tried with no proper technique. And It really hurts. Go for songs in Suicide Season and There is a Hell... there's when they actually found their identity. And then Sempiternal was a turning point. They were one of the first bands to put out music like this and they were teenagers, some of them were not even 18 at the moment. The screams and tone in the next two albums are IMO truly unique and they where praised among critics because BMTH went from a straight deathcore band to something much more special, personal, different, mixing metalcore with hardcore metal and hardcore punk, they made their own style that then it was copied and copied by MANY bands. This is their first studio album; now listen to those and I think you'll get what I'm saying. They even said they were just a bunch of teens who only wanted to trash it all back then, but they grew up and so did their sound. Btw, thanks to them the "more developed deathcore" started emerging, but they didn't engage to a style, but to their own core. Suicide Season (the whole album) is my all time fav. But I think AMO is a musical masterpiece and SH a superb EP. And I say so as a musician myself (I listen from Meshuggah to Cabaret Voltaire, Sopor Aeternus or Prince, if the music has soul and hits me I couldn't care less about labels). Cheers from Spain.

    I honestly dont care much for the screaming type of metal BUT this album and one of the suicide silence albums I cant seem to get enough of for some reason but out side of that the rest of this type of metal is just not my thing

    Since after Suicide Season, the band has evolved into a more hard rock Linkin Park influenced sound.

    Sound quality may have gone up in the last decade or so, but I definitely miss when everything wasn't so loud and bassy. I wasn't a metalhead back then, but going back to bands from that era is great. The music felt rawer.
    I get what you mean about Asking Alexandria and their rapid change. I don't like most of their new tracks, and I also don't think their lyrics have matured as much as is said in their new stuff...but Motionless in White? MIW still make heavy music. What they've done is what should be considered evolving. They've experimented while always sticking to their original sound. I saw your reaction to Disguise, and Alice's assessment was fair based on that one song. I suggest checking out more of them. Perhaps something heavier? Since you thought they're considered sellouts, react to their *latest* song 'Creatures X: To The Grave' live from their Deadstream concert (28th Oct 2020)- a live stream concert held to commemorate their 10 year anniversary of their debut album 'Creatures'. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/_nz27VgvHUY/видео.html

    Well, they don't do much for me, but I learn a lot from your conversations. I understand the role of death metal and related genres in providing a "safe space" for people dealing with stuff--your discussion of that in other videos is on point. But western metal seems to be trapped in an arms race to be the angriest, most abrasive, and most depressing. If you dive further into Japanese girl-metal, especially bands like Lovebites, Nemophila and Gacharic Spin, you'll find a world of music that is heavy as F*** but empowering and uplifting. Alice, you picked up on that in your first Lovebites reaction, and I hope you do more.

    On the sound quality, plenty could and did do better than this in mid-2000s, but it would require a bit more than just a laptop and that was never gonna happen for a UK deathcore band.
    A super compressed youtube vid isn't going to help on that score either.
    The people you know who screwed up their voiced were probably doing it unsafely. It's perfectly possible to get longevity out of various 'unclean' vocal styles if using proper technique, but it's certainly not easy to come by tutelage in that and it definitely wasn't back in the early - mid 00's. Nor do many late teens or early 20s starting bands really look for it when they're starting out.

    HOW are you able to listen to this type of music? The music, isn't my issue, it's Oli sounding like he's a demon from hell speaking in tongues! That's my question. I REALLY want to understand how Oli's vocals/screams back then could sound "good"? to anybody? I'm not being funny either. They scare me, like make me uncomfortable af!
    Or do you just get used to those vocals and lack of melody? The Instrumental is ok on this song, just vocals that are off-putting to my ears. Like, when she read the lyrics, I was like... Huh🤔Oli was writing deep-ass lyrics way back then too!? Interesting, but scary-ish lyrics, more mature than anybody that young.
    Now, Oli's vocals on "Don't Go", "Blessed with a curse" and even "Chelsea Smile" grew on me and now they're my favorites cuz of how much emotion Oli's voice portrays. Just wish I didn't have an inner aversion to listening to BMTHs beginnings🙁
    I have adored all BMTH after their "deathcore" and love the new EP. It's an EPIC MASTERPIECE 🤘
    Please don't judge me to bad y'all, just being honest💯

      It grows on you. At first I didn't like high shrieking vocals in black metal for example but after a while I really started to like it. I think it has a lot to do with the genre and lyrics that the vocals just fit. Oli's high screams just blend so well with these depressing, emo lyrics on BMTH's first albums. Those screams just convey so many emotions.

    It’s pretty common to have both high and low screams in Deathcore so that was not the reason Oli damages his voice , if you want a really versatile and impressive band with those screams check out Slaughter to Prevail and Lorna Shore

    You guys have to check out a new up-and-comer. They are early 2000's NU metal meets today's Deathcore. Probably the breakout metal band of the year. They are called Tallah. Their drummer is named Max Portnoy and he is the son of Mike Portnoy, who used to drum for dream theater. Their vocalist is named Justin bonitz. He has a couple of RUclips channels and apparently had won a vocalist contest at one time. They are almost unbelievably good
    No one should read this

I feel they mature their sound, at the end of the day Oli learn how to sing, how to adapt his voice and now their lyrics are wayyyy better, so yeah, maybe they aren't heavy in sound but they can be heavy in lyrics
