Is Canada’s international student program broken?

- Many post-secondary schools have boosted international enrolment in recent years because provincial funding for colleges and universities has declined. But officials are calling out “bad actors” who they say mislead students about the real cost of living and “puppy mill” schools that don’t provide a quality education.

It’s insane to encourage students to come to Canada when there is no where for them to live.
It's insane when we have very few jobs.
@@swaggery Can we ignore everyone that ever said "labour shortage" now?
They are advertizing sharing a room for 500-700$ a month for college kids in North Bay Ontario. Sharing a bedroom that is. Yay we are one of the immigration settlement cities! Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let them study online in their home countries. We cannot be having International Students sleeping in our stairwell. That's not safe.
There are various reasons that demonstrate that the labor shortage has been overstated.@@443DM
Students applications have been fallen for the past months, all due to cost of living, Liberals are just gaslighting they’re fixing what they created.
So now Liberals want Mexican to come to fill low income labour.
It must be a priviledge, and a match for the values of the existing population. Our values built the institutions we have that are apparently a valuable opportunity these students they can't find at home.
One’s bank account determines what laws must be abided to in Canada. Just a different kind of corruption, than one sees in impoverished countries, but a very corrupted government.
Whoever "accredited" these universities should lose their job and should shut down that accreditation body. It is only about money and not bettering Canada. We don't need more Tim Hortons and Uber workers. We need healthcare providers and trades people. SHUT IT DOWN.
Well the health care workers are still immigrants. Me and my partner as examples 😂
@@notyourbestietrue but how many are there of YOU compared to how many there are of THEM? Especially those who come here to take food from food banks meant for Canadians? Besides, he’s talking about “immigrant wannabe” students, of now, not Landed Immigrants of the past when there were real jobs.
Immigration agents selling job offer letters for 40,000 CAD in Vancouver area, and it’s strange that immigration Canada don’t know about this
True
40k for nail technician lollll. Even more expensive for more advanced posts. Don't ask me why me lolll
The government knows lol it's nothing to care about if at the end of the day their greed is met....ppl need to wake up this has been happening for years n won't be changing lol
Unfortunately it's true
Put a cap on Permanent residence, which eventually solves every issue. No more puppy mills, no false promises from so-called consultants, aka financial predators.
Mark my words, this is coming next. The spotlight is on the International Students now but once it dies down and the high cost of living still lingers, that's what's next on the chopping block.
Exactly that is what them to come with no clues.
So you got your PR recently and now you act like Canadian 😅😂😅😂 when you will never be one 😅😂😅
Or just someone speaking sense. @@smurug85
No because people will still come as temporary residents and a lot ot them will naturally want to stay here. The logical thing is to cap temporary residents to allow those who get to come here to be able to stay.
There are no jobs here. Why the hell are we even talking about housing when the programs dont even have a chance of a job afterwards?
I agree with the trades guy but you can not expect an international student that already has a degree to start welding.
and actually many compulsory skilled trades are protected, u can't get into apprenticeship without pr.
@@huktfs5442ujn oh really, i did not know that. This country is so done.
One of those “puppy mill” schools I bet you is Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario.
And Conestoga Colleges in Kitchener -Waterloo and Guelph
It's large Canadian universities too - they are merely degree mills now....everybody passes ...nobody fails.
Many scams ongoing in Canada. If large Canadian Insurance companies like Cooperators are a scam, you can be sure smaller operators are behaving worse.
I would say your logic is backwards there but whatever, you do you.
Cant explain why though, huh? What's the point of the comment? I'll infer. UBC should be less of a scam than Joe's Learning Centre. @@aloysiusdevadanderabercrom6401
The real issue, these universities and colleges that cannot command market level tuitition because the programs or degrees they offer are of questionable value. Questionable meaning anyone graduating cannot be gainfully employed AND command an above average salary. So, really these colleges and universities should be shut down, but there is no political will to do it, especially if you are the incumbent MPP in that riding.
The reality is Canada is known as a country to sell things they don't have....the reason it appears like it's breaking because they never had a foundation to begin with.... majority of students whether international or not haven't actually utilized their credentials....it's just that Canada is passive and ppl ignore what goes on
Solution is simple:
Student visa should not translate into a PR into Citizenship... and immediately you will only see students coming through who give two hoots about the education... 95% of the students who only come for PR/citizenship wont even bother... no need for caps etc... let them study, go back...
100%, you don't need the cap if you make the path to citizenship harder,
Why would anyone be coming to study in Canada if you aren't providing citizenship lol.
@@pops1cle187 Canada was once a great country
It this is implemented, I bet you Canada is not worth single penny and you expect us to spend (x4)~(x5) quadruple or quintuple amount of tuition fees to make you kids education for free. I can tell you this my friend, you might be leaving in different world though.
And then, you'll still need us. International student first who came with 10 plus years experience as a doctor and not gonna give us PR and many more of us? This rule of yours will be impossible.
Why are they showing this like its a new issue? It's been like this for years. Record after record breaking bringing new students and, now that it broke the housing system, the press decided to report it, and the gov. decided to do something about it.
@@coffeecake343only Conservative provinces are having this problem? And who issues the Visas, Federal gov right?
@coffeecake343 Every province has a provincial immigration program, no matter what they vote, like the BC PNP. New Brunswick for example is known to be one of the easiest provinces to grant PR
International students and visitors must return to their home countries after their visa expires. They are not eligible to apply for permanent residency without leaving Canada.
If there is no PR for international students nobody in their right mind would ever study in piss poor universities of canada. The top universities in canada are some of the worst universities when you compare them to the other prominent universities in various countries. Everyone would look for a better country and move on. And the free education that your children are getting due to all the tax that is being paid by us would cease to exist
I'm sure the landlords getting rich renting tiny rooms to students aren't going to like this.
NOBODY NEEDS to study in Canada.. They are looking for a free ride.
Its so sad that SCAMS are everywhere
Then don’t come to Canada
Its not a "program" its a business. Until education is valued for its true worth and not how much money you can squeeze out of students, it will be flawed like this.
I love my degree and im glad i get to use it, but crushing debt as a young person is awful
How can we measure the value of an education when the educators themselves are garbage and provide so little in actual education.
@@thesovereign4218 I was lucky I supoose. I had wonderful professors.
@@guesswhosbackg6616because many degrees are theoretical and have no practical applications.
"Is Canada’s international student program broken?" ...yes video over
Canada is a joke of a developed country. As a resident of Canada, I would strongly advise Indian students to seek opportunities elsewhere. It's not worth the stress to be honest, especially after paying mega $$$
No it's not broken. You come here to get an education then leave. Bye. So what that you have to pay more. Study somewhere else then.
Being a former international student myself, I think it is clear for everyone that the main issue is coming from a specific region. Not pointing fingers here, the country receiving students should vet whoever is interested in studying there. But most importantly, if we care if our food is ethically sourced, why wouldnt a country make sure the selection process is fair and ethical when recruiting an intl student? Many come to study because of the possibility of the PR, but not everyone actually CARES about studying. Ive had multiple cases where my colleagues and myself had to study hard to make up for the lack of commitment of some students and, as much as it is sad for me to say it, 99% of then were from one particular place. “I want my PR, got a student visa, so I should focus on my studies to get it” sadly is not the mentality in place. Also, landlords are afraid of renting their homes to students, because many of these so-called students bring in lots of people to live in the house without their consent and, when they move out, the place is miserably damaged. All cases I’ve experienced and/or seen. Here’s hoping something or someone will make our lives better, which obviously wont happen with one but many integrated effective decisions.
PS: Not being naive here, Canada has made trillions of dollars with this policy (government fees, taxes, Universities etc). Too much Capitalism and too much greed allowed this to happen.
@@robsoncoqueiro3676Capitalism also made the country more prosperous which in turn makes people want to come here.

Any uni with over 50% international students should be investigated. Int students should only be allowed to apply to schools with min 60% Canadians. This will also help them to learn Canadian culture. Critical for anyone who wants to live, work after graduation.
Not just the program, the country is broken after 8 years of Turdeau.
I took a post grad college course at Humber in 2011 and was shocked by what a broken system it was then, i cant even imagine what it's like now. Many of them could barely speak english, let alone write full college assignments in english, but we would get put into groups with them where they would be responsible for a portion of the work they had no way of completing. We were silently expected to pick up the work and i just said absolutely not, this person cannot complete the work in order to earn their diploma, which meant they would ultimately flunk out and have to go back home to their own country. Imagine being the reason someone has to leave a country they'd hoped to build a new life in. Ill never forget her tears. What an absolute mess of a system
Consider the case of Niagara college, where students were miserably failing and to the surprise, even they don’t understand the English . Very strange, they passed Literacy test before coming here.
@mukesharora2053 it was for an HR management class and the assignment was on McDonald's and their HR department, etc. When I started receiving their written portions to the work, they were barely legible, and it became obvious they couldn't speak the language. I just put my foot down and said, you absolutely need to complete this assignment somehow or I will be exposing this to the department heads. A half hour later I get a thoughtfully typed out assignment from them, I said wow, good job, this is much better. I ended up inputting a single sentence of it into Google for whatever reason and the McDonald's wikipedia page popped up. This person plagiarized the McDonald's wiki site and tried to pass it off to me like her own work lol. When I called her out on it over the phone she just basically laughed and hung up on me. I had TWO current class projects with this person. I made a complaint to the one class head thinking that's it, it's over, case closed, but was still responsible to do the same for the other class as if it was ME who had to prove my case here instead of HER having to defend hers. Both teachers even tried to ask me if there was some way I could sort it out with her. Like uhhh no, I'm not an English teacher lmao, I couldn't even if i wanted to. Both teachers really didn't want anything to do with it. It's obvious there must be a lot of money and kickbacks involved, and obviously initial trickery to even get over here in the first place if they can't even write and produce the necessary work in English
CANADA IS BROKEN
Ya but broken on purpose
The best suggestion is that students should not have a direct path to PR. Proposing a waiting period of at least 3 years after graduation or 7 years from arrival whichever comes later before submitting a PR application, with an additional 3-year wait for approval. To qualify during this period, meaningful employment related to their studies and skills should be demonstrated. Furthermore, dependants of these students should not be permitted to work until the primary applicants obtain PR. Implementing stricter criteria for PR applications is seen as a deterrent to potential scammers and abuses.
that is unrealistic, considering the labor needs of Canada. At the moment Canada is seeing a significant increase in retirement, and folks leaving the workforce. Furthermore, its easier to transition someone who has studied here to a PR, than bring in a new immigrant.
To anyone thinking of coming to Canada, just stop 🛑. Go to the USA instead.
Lets not be naiive and believe These students were unaware of what they were buying.
Lol - ALL of Canada is broken.
Yes it is. Because it does not take into account the impacts it has on our resources such as housing and health care. Despite our best intentions we simply cannot take in so many people. We don't have the housing for them, we don't have the health care resources for them.
This insane influx of people has resulted in a massive rent increase that in turn has led to massive homelessness. We are literally the victims of our own good intentions in this area.
Immigration can be a very good thing when it's done in moderation and with common sense limits.
When Stephen Happer was in the office, nothing like this was happening, I am voting conservative
I have been saying this for years. go after the crooked professors and ask for your money back. go see how well they live.
My question as an international student, why is IRCC giving approval to Unrecognized Agents Files ?
IRCC should only give approval to RCIC Approved Agent Files. Simple.
Canadian Immigration system is broken beyond repair.
Miller did the right move.
We have been lived in Canada without those international students.
We will survive without them.
The lawyers will suffer, because they will loose the milky income.
the one thing i like is he as well put 2 teir system. Those going to a credited regulated DLI will come in and the other who goes to ones that don't care how many people they allowed in is teir 2 (i.e non regulated) plus he even mention if provincal and territores don't start regulating the private ones and manage the international acceptence they gonna step in. So not sure how premier gonna like but the premier done nothing to do it.
Trudeau has broken canada!
Canada is broken as a whole at the moment
Those puppy mill schools should be shut down. Investigated and routed.
The education business needs to be investigated. Especially when you have foreign nationals purposefully and intently bying for imagration. If imagration is the intended outcome, why is this not identified in the initial application stage?
Why did Doug Ford's Ontario authorize and accredit the schools to do this?

@443DM the "INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PROGRAM" is just that "INTERNATIONAL" no single province has control over it and the program across the country is "FULL OF FRAUD" including some Federal government agencies and officials.
YES its definitely a problem!!

Most of International students want Canadian citizenship. they leave after they get because of Canadian unbearable weather.
so it’s a good business for Canada
Why the heck go to Canada when you can enroll in a foreign program online?
PR only because of PR
this is not an issue that came up overnight night it's just been put to light overnight. I am not sure why the Government of Canada let this situation go unchecked for so long. international students are, in essence, immigrants. they come with the intention to get a good education in Canada and then to find a job to afterward eventually live and migrant to Canada. But if you have substandard education being provided without requiring sufficient funds to address their stay. those same students are going to add stress to a system, which historically has been taken advantage of when deemed necessary. shame on Canada government that it is trying to increase the population without taking into full consideration the contribution that each international student can contribute. quality vs quantity, not quantity over quality. Canada needs to work hard to bring back up the quality of living that attracted so many immigrants in the 70s and 80s. Good luck, Canada. We will be praying for you 🙏 ❤️!
Since colleges and universities are raking in the cash, ensure that they use it toward building dormitories. Make it mandatory. Too many students are taking over lodgings permanent residents desperately need.
Don't think it has anything to do with the institutions themselves. I'm pretty sure the problem is that the Canadian government doesn't regulate what institutions are certified to actually deliver diplomas.
When you don't regulate educational institutions like this they become so diluted that you could teach anything and give a diploma and anything and not be certified at all in the government can't say anything about it
They're not taking advantage of the international students the international students are taking advantage that the Canadian government doesn't actually require any background check or any actual certification to come and get na diploma
Like EVERYTHING else the government has twiddled their thumbs on the matter for nearly a decade.
For example, Algonquin College in Ottawa has tripled in size by basically becoming an international school for ChatGPT users. There are many classes and courses mainly comprised of international students and it makes me wonder how many Canadians coming out of high school in the area get rejected in favour of an international student.
The number of people I’ve met here on a study or work permit looking for permanent residence is astounding.
Open your eyes!! All of Canada is broken FFS!
Trudeau really outdid himself 😂
Canada uses Newcomers to pay pensions of old Europeans through tax
This was planned out decades ago. They all knew boomers are retiring and the government had already said they would be bringing in more immigrants. Obviously rake in taxes and pay out pensions. It’s not a conspiracy or a coincidence. They just found a market that pumps more money into the economy with triple tuition fees of international students.
I doubt it - not with the wage dumping effect in the progressive tax system.
Why not just have visa-interviews like the states.
Mulroney building at stfx. Buff said.
It’s Canada. Everything’s broken.
They're very late to react. Rest of the country knew what was going on years ago and now the government is overreacting to make up their mistakes when they could have taken steps to improve the system. But that would affect the money they're making under the table
Lol exactly....a decades long reality....greed won't ever stop....it's the typical Canadian way to talk and no actions, the media is just playing to ppls emotions
Our healthcare is broken, housing is broken, rent is broken, taxes are broken, immigration is broken, our education system is broken, our justice system is broken, we're essentially in freefall but Canadians would rather suffer than be called mean words.
There’s also employers that are paying cash for work to avoid the limits amount hours allowed for foreign students.
Yes, it is broken. And breaking Canada.
Colleges and universities in canada got addicted with international students money.
It's not broken...it's just ripe for abuse.
the scam is running its course lol
"Is Canada broken?" Yes.
Canadas federal government is broken.
Cant handle student housing. 😂
Name any government managed program that works
Its public universities. They charge 3 to 5 times the fees.
I studied in a public and well known college in Toronto. what happened is that some people worked (saturdays, sundays, afternoons, mornings), and they only went to college to copy (really it was a photocopy) assignments from other people. The only thing that they changed was their name on the frontpage. Teachers marked the assignments in the same way, with the same comments, in the same part, and with the same mark. Plagiarism was rampant, students and teachers knew that, but no one did anything. The idea for international students is that education can't be too harsh, because they can go and look for others easy colleges, where they can obtain the degree while they work.
yes, they are buying visas, not the education.

It’s not just private colleges. I live in London and Fanshawe is packed with Indian students. I have seen the same at Conestoga
Cambrian college in Sudbury ON is one of the schools surviving on international students. I’m a student there, and there are more international students than local/canadian for sure.
Why you are ignoring a big fact and that the competence of the faculty members, are they really qualified to teach their students. No body is checking them specifically the road side colleges, you says mills?
In regards to the job market, non of them wants to work in field . Everyone wants a white colour jobs which doesn’t exist. What Canada needs is people to work in Tim Hortons and truck drivers to move the stuff around. This is a truth.
Finally they do something! how many years and how many bucks went to schools and people who have left this country with a crisis of both education and housing? Now we just have to build millions of units just to keep up. There are applications to rent rooms! Rooms at 1,500$ very few apartments available and waiting lists for everything for housing for healthcare. Everything is on a waiting list except the bills and taxes. Those are coming right on time. Great job people, great job!
It's just another racket about 7 yrs or so old when I first noticed it but the solution seems as absurd as the current problem and am guessing nothing will be solved as usual ? Like roofing scams , car rental scams and others imo
Its such a business...post secondary has been a joke now in Canada with less emphasis on quality and making a low standard...nowadays degrees and diplomas from these institutions doesnt guarantee any job rn
This has been going on in Canada for YEARS. Yet no politician has said anything fearing they may offend and lose a vote ot two.
Our politicians in Canada are so gutless they don't care if an activity is illegal, immoral, damaging or destructive to people to our country. I think we would do better to get rid of the politicians and keep the students. 🤨😠
Of course it is. The entire Canadian immigration scheme is broken. We have for decades looked to the Nordic countries as exemplars of immigration policy and now those countries are admitting that it simply doesn’t work. The future of our nation rests on us making meaningful changes not just to our immigration policies but our attitudes toward “integration”, as we see the rise of extremism in our population - a direct consequence of who we let in this country and where they come from.
Please! Require “college agents” to disclose their agent status to the prospective students! Currently, college agents mimicry as “educational consultants” and even charitable organizations, to create an impression that their clients are prospective students and not colleges. They are so entitled and feel they should all get PR after they’re done this needs to end and they need to be sent home and they need to come here the legal way.
I am a Masters in Digital Business from a no 5 University of New Zealand, along with an engineering degree, with 5 years of experience in Data Analytics and 10yrs in HSBC UK banking operations. I an studying Project Management in Canada right now. It should be easy for qualified people like me to get a PR, however millions of uneducated students who can't even speak proper English get an easy PR. Shows who is exploiting and who has capacity to add value to Canada.
That's the problem... Universities and schools are making money without regarding the issues we have with housing. It is irrelevant for the rest of the country, it makes the colleges/universities millions. Does nothing for you and me.
Give priority to international students who are pursuing a bachelor degree in STEM in Canada. They spent four years with huge investment but a student did bachelor from home country and started two years of masters degree to get higher package and very easy PR. Such a trend will destroy bachelor degree culture from Canadian Universities.
Better fix it or they will leave and if you think things are bad now wait, oh wait and wait and wait for your health care.

yes, especially the diplomats in India are under the pressure from the elected officials to open the back door for the under criteria students
The country needs to be closed until housing and healthcare are fixed. The system is overwhelmed. We can still bring people in if they can work to build housing or help with our overwhelmed healthcare system. Anyone else taxes our broken system further.
