    Most videos I see people look like they have to work it in by brushing and dragging for hours. Yours look so effortless. The sand is just disappears with one pass. How did you get it to do that?

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  5 лет назад +2

      Great question, couple of reasons why people seems to struggle spreading top dressing materials (including myself), applying too much at one time and not letting the material dry out completely before spreading. Thanks for checking out the video 😎👍🏼

    Actually, why not top dress right after seeding, to have seeds deeper in soil?

    In your opinion what tool do you prefer to use to level your lawn? The rake tool in this video or do you prefer the mini drag tool you created with 2x4's? Thanks!

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  4 года назад

      Definitely the mini drag, but for a smaller lawn like the one on this video the rake is perfectly fine.

    Very nicely done. I like that you cant see the soil once you leveled it in. Do you recommend applying some fertilizer to give the grass a push or will the compost be enough fuel. ?

    Did you use the .5 inch rule to figure out how much top soil you needed?

  • @rjmiller2553
    @rjmiller2553 4 года назад

    The bigger pieces of wood you filtered out are exactly the organic matter that works into the soil and helps avoid compaction and helps drainage and let’s good bacteria have access to more oxygen and basically more air spaces in the soil. It takes a few days to not be so noticeable but after 2 weeks it’s part of the soil

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  4 года назад

      I’m not sure if you notice but my lawn is maintained between 3/8” to 5/8” and its super dense, can you imagine having these junk on it? and not to mention the damage it will cause to a reel mower. All I wanted from that mix is the sand and manure compost and not those ground up wooden pallets, rocks and bolts. I don’t disagree with what you mentioned above, I’m sure it would make perfect sense on a 3” tall fescue lawn.
      (looks like you’re going through all my videos, just don’t skip the adds alright 😉👍🏼)

  • @grass-patch
    @grass-patch 5 лет назад

    Job well done. I also use organic compost soil conditioner with high humus content for top dressing. That mixed with peat moss applied to an over seeded lawn using Bewitched KBG. Just starting to see germination day 7. Will see how it gets along with the Midnight. Trick is, like you say, dry mix and let the grains fall where they may. My vote, landscape rake ~ Mike

    Looking great !! Love the clan look of short grass. As a lawn care provider i wanted to mention that I have found that a broadcast fertilizer spreader will work very well with DRY topsoil. I top dress about a dozen Zoysia lawns and they prefer sand. I just happened to try it one day and was pleased. My Earthway 50lb spreader handles it well. What type of turf do you have ?

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Ron!..I tried spreading sand using my cheap scotts spreader and did not work at all 😁
      I have Kentucky Bluegrass btw.

      I ended up moving to a new house this year and did a massive renovation, 8 cubic yards of compost/topsoil and reseeded with PRG. I probably had too much soil delivered but it still turned out better than expected. Next year, I think I’ll get that same mix and do 3 yards to level out some spots. Videos like this gave me the confidence I could do this too!
