Where is the toughest place to play on a Cold, Wet Tuesday night?

- On the 20th of December 2010, TV pundit Andy Gray claimed that Leonel Messi would “struggle on a cold night at the Britannia Stadium … A cold, wet, windy one". And so, a football cliché was born.
"Can they do it on a cold wet Tuesday night in Stoke". This iconic phrase has since become a football parody, and unavoidable whenever discussions of the 'GOAT' come up. But is Stoke really the toughest place to visit under such conditions?
In this video, we take a deep dive into the reality behind the myth, with hard(ish) stats. We scrutinise every Tuesday night Premier League game from the 1992/1993 season to the 2023/2024 season, examining weather records to find out where truly is the harshest place to visit on a cold, wet Tuesday night.

This channel is gonna blow up, trust me. Top editing, and with Tifo being purchased by The Athletic and becoming a bit more corporate a lot of people want original animated content about football stories. Keep it up mate!!!
Really appreciate that, I consider Tifo as an influence for the channel so that means a lot! Hopefully some more videos you'll enjoy coming soon.

I like Tifo
But as long as you add your own twist to it , think your do really well
It's good but could he make this content on a Cold Wet Tuesday Night in Wolverhampton?
It is already blowing up, and honestly reminds me of Jon Bois mixed with tifo indeed
Atheltic post fake news
that one unemployed friend on a cold, wet, tuesday night:
As a stoke fan, I have to say that we get that name because of the sheer temperature and wind, the gaps in the stadium make for huge gusts of wind, and it’s in a place that is VERY cold, and it’s by a waste disposal facility and sometimes stinks, so it can really hurt even the home fans
so youre a fellow stoke fan, with the same pfp, how (also well in you are a legend for supporting stoke)
I’m not British, so this is the first time I hear about the cold wet Tuesday night.
Funnily enough my team (Mexico city’s Pumas) is actually kinda known for their dry sunny Sunday noon games, so I guess they can’t make it on a cold wet Tuesday night in Leeds 😅
We should petition for a Pumas pre-season tour of Yorkshire and the West Midlands to find out
Nice. "Pero pueden hacerlo a las 12 sobre el sol de Cuidad de Mexico?"
Goya
Champions of the cold wet Tuesday night league, you’ll never sing that 🎶
We're relegated at the bottom with Blackburn it's over
Over here in Brazil, we say Real Madrid woudn't be able to win more than a few matches on a national second division campaign, with state of the art chaos and misery. Same vibes, I guess.
Never knew the Portuguese national team loved cold wet weather :P
😂😂 I don't think they will be as many there much longer
This video is my exact brand of nerdy football bollocks. Love it.
Hopefully more nerdy football bollocks on the way
@@RouteNone you have to make it your slogan on RUclips mate x
How ironic, I saw this video right after Noni Madueke said "everything is shit about wolverhampton"
The Fulham bit got a smile, well done.
6:39 I thought “god it would be shit to have to go to Leeds on a cold wet Tuesday night” - you summarised my thoughts in the coming minute 😂
Man, you really should have added cold wet Wednesday night games, as many still say "but can they do that on a cold rainy WEDNESDAY night at Stoke"! That'd another fun video!
Please don't make me suffer any more than I already have ...
I swear to god if Sheffield Wednesday are bad at those games there’s nothing left😂
48 subs!!??? I was ready to click off and see a count in the millions....such a high quality well made video great job!
Haha, we'll hopefully get to millions one day. In the meantime thank you for the feedback!
this was so amazingly well done, I'm shocked you don't have more subscribers
keep up the good work man
Glad you enjoyed it, Thank you for the support!
This channel just got started. Only 6 videos done, all high quality, well researched, but fun stuff. Give it a bit more time, it's going to explode 👍🏾
I admire the vast amount of effort put into something completely trivial. Subscribed
So Noni was right! Just as well we played them on sunny Sunday afternoon 😜
The mythologising of Stoke was picked up by a contributor to humerous Private Eye column. It featured, until recently, a fun collection of extreme posters with names such as Tim The House Husband, Gilfy Gracie, Darling Deneeze and...Stokie Steve. The last mentioned usually closed the debate (held by 'moderator' Bogbrush) with "Come up her to Stoke and I'll kick your fxxxing head in". I wonder if the column started in 2010.
Anyway, quality channel. As a Spurs fan it pains me but I enjoyed your 'colour of' North London one as well. Subscribing and good luck.
same... COYS!
Nice research. There were loads of misconceptions about the Stoke team at the time, usually painting the team, club, and area in a more negative light than the reality. Even the subject of this video is a backhanded compliment.
This is an awesome channel, glad to find this so early
Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad you're enjoying the channel
Lionel Messi has done it on the high altitude planes of La Paz. A bit of rain in the west midlands wouldn't hurt him.
Wolve’s lucky to have their record stay intact since their match yesterday wasn’t cold, rainy or a night
Brooo the only way is upppp, incredible storytelling, graphics etc u just earned a new fan
Much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Hopefully there's more of the same on the way
Bro, you are doing great, keep up with the good job and in no time you'll get million views.
This content is honestly amazing, keep up the good work mate!
I was watching videos for Motion Graphics inspiration, accidentally ended up watching all of your video's. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the channel. If you're looking for inspo from a motion perspective, I highly recommend Vox's videos - I often draw inspiration from them. They create a lot of great work.
Definitely something in this at Elland Road. Quite a few teams that are good fail to turn up midweek. Bournemouth being the most memorable example of a theoretically decent team from down South that can't hack the cold North midweek fixtures.
You're doing some incredible work mate. I hope the channel blows up, it deserves to. Just please don't fully sell out ever :( I love the videos.
Nobody likes playing up at Dingwall (Ross County FC) - Scottish Highlands - during the winter.
This is great! Being a stats nerd though, I'd argue that differing sample sizes here would certainly be biasing the results. Leeds might be top of the list, imo. A quick and dirty bias correction here would be to 'assume' each team played two more games and won one and lost one and recalculate the metric.
Just subbed because this was mentioned in the Football Cliche's pod! Excellent work dude
Very surreal to hear the channel mentioned when I was listening the other day, couldn't quite believe it! Thanks for subscribing!
Excellent video! Very funny. The only slight complaint I have is that you could have compared the PtsPCWTN to some other metric such as the PtsPSSA (Points per sunny Saturday afternoon) and then taken one away from the other to see how big of an effect it actually has - Chelsea and Spurs on 3.0 PtsPCWTN makes sense because they're top teams of course but if they usually average 2 pts a game (bit high admittedly) for a normal Saturday 3pm kickoff then most of that effect can be minimised. Just an idea!
Really good video, a neat little exploration of football mythos. The position of the Brit alone on a hilltop with open corners really amplified the effect of the general weather, to the point it was worse inside the ground than even standing in the car park. Add to that the fact I've seen rain so thick there you couldn't kick the ball off the ground (look up our league cup tie vs Man United in 2012) and frankly I don't think there's anything beating a cold wet Tuesday night in Stoke, certainly not for spectacle at least.
Btw, agree with all the others. This channel is going to grow massively if you keep putting out this quality of content. If i could suggest one thing, it'd be to try not swearing in the videos.
This is quite possibly the best video i have ever watched
Excellent video, thanks. Funnily enough I've often wondered this myself, so it's great to see.
Not suggesting you do, but keeping it in the spirit of Gray, it'd be good to see it for 'weekday' instead of 'Tuesday' as I imagine he was talking about cold, wet, windy weeknights rather than any specific weekday - which doesn't make any difference. That way would give you two or three times more data to work with.
Appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
If I'm being honest, this was my initial plan, but just analysing the Tuesday night games drove me nuts. Would have loved to have done every other weekday, but I may have caved my own skull in.
@@RouteNone Fair play and I appreciate the response. Cheers and good luck! Subscribed 👍

Wonderful video mate. Engaging and well produced in all aspects. Looking forward to your next upload. With the quality of these videos your channel is definitely going to grow, keep at it! Great channel name too.
You should have seen the shortlist of possible names; was looking desperate before Route None! Really appreciate you taking the time to comment with the positive feedback, hopefully some more solid content coming soon.
Loved it, please keep making more of this nerdy football content
This is absolutely brilliant
What a video. I hope you will make more. This could get big
Really enjoyed the video mate!
Cheers for the positive feedback, much appreciated!
This is the content I want, I hope you grow man
Great work - bringing receipts to any football conversation is super important. I used to get help with my youth team from a proper QPR coach. He told me “opinions in football are like arseholes - everyone’s got one”. Hence, bringing evidence is a must, I find.
Just binged your videos. I’m sure you already know this with the growth you’ve had and the quality of your content but your channel is never going to stop growing. Easily at the quality of 6 digit subs.
Really appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment! Hopefully will get there someday, but in the meantime glad you're enjoying the channel!
Amazing work 👍. I am honestly excited for more maths football equations
Time exceptionally well spent sir
Vers cool keep up the good work.
kinda feel like you should have shown the team who overperforms the most on cold tuesday nights compared to their regular games tho
I was thinking the same thing. They may be a trash team, but they could still draw additional power from the terrible weather
The omission of cup games is bizarre. You know, the games that are normally played mid-week?
I think what you'd ideally want to calculate is a CWTN points differential to control for the strength of the away team. If Pullis' boys pulled off a turgid draw against Chelsea on a CWTN that feels like the essence of the saying wheras beating a lower table side doesn't feel the same. Therefore, for each CWTN, calculate the difference between expected points (the average of the homes sides record against the away side in non-CWTN fixtures) and CWTN points.
Inevitably, there will be some small sample problems but would be interesting to see who gets the biggest boost from a CWTN.
This is the content I never knew I needed RUclips. Thank you algorithm!
Enjoyed every detail went into figuring the toughest team to play on a CWTN.
Could've included the general sentiment of a cold rainy mid-week fixture instead of just Tuesday with an either condition for weather for cold or wet. Also could've kept Monday night/ Friday night kick-offs. Championship sides inclusion too. More data would've made this list such fun.
Anyways love the vids the format and editing. Quickest sub on YT 👍
The city name may be Wolverhampton, but we do refer to the city as Wolves quite often. For example, whilst at Keele Uni (in Stoke, funnily enough), I would refer to myself as being "from Wolves" to people I met. Much easier than the quadrisyllabic "Wolverhampton" over my eighth cup of malibu-coke on the SU dance floor.
Quality video mate, absolutely brilliant stuff and hope to keep track of your channel
Thanks very much pal! Hopefully some more content you'll enjoy coming soon
You had me after thirthy seconds, immediately subscribed. Keep going man!
Glad you enjoyed it, and welcome aboard!
Stellar work!
Obviously the Vale would always come out on top if they had ever been in the prem.
I’m glad that there are people like you, willing to do some useless data videos to keep us entertained. Loved it. You have my like and my subscription.
not the biggest fan of football - but i am the biggest fan of deep dives into the most random niche subject.
As an Arsenal fan, I chuckled when you showed Wenger. Yea we don't talk about those Stoke games 😂.
Brilliant mate. Just brilliant
great video but criminal not showing the full table ahahah
Man out here doing the Lord's work! Great content!!
Great Video! Amazing work and dedication put into it. If it’s just you putting in the work it was incredible. Like university thesis level stuff. Keep up the the great work.
Subscribed because of football clichés
As a wolves fan, based on our current form, I hope we only play on cold wet Tuesday nights this year
I can't believe you're only 2k subscribers mate.. keep up the good work and you'll soon blow up!
Much appreciated! Thanks for stopping by to comment
This channel is an hidden gem
Brilliant video man, hope you grow to the very top!
Not sure much would change if you flicked the "Bristol Teams" filter on and off, since neither City nor Rovers have ever played in the EPL!
Exclusing fulham off vibes is pretty based
this is so well made but it has no views?
As a Wolves supporter, I’m very happy to have won the CWTN cup
Your content reminds me of Tifo and Alfie Potts Harmer (HITC Sevens) keep up the great work!
Thank you! They both do great work so really nice to be compared to them. Hopefully more to enjoy along the way
Great video for Americans like myself to hear Tuesday pronounced “choos day” a ridiculous amount of times LOL
Just wait until you hear me pronounce Thursday as "First day" ...
this is amazing, keep this work up man your gonna go places
Much appreciated! Hopefully more of the same coming soon
Top class editing and great video mate 💪
Appreciated! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wolverhampton makes sense. It's not far from West Bromwich, whose The Hawthorns stadium always seems somewhere between cold and freezing due to elevation.
I'm here after hearing about this on the Football Clichés podcast
Maybe this was the reason Noni tweeted that? 😂
for the math alone you deserve a sub...
I feel like the Tuesday part really doesn't matter. I'd like to know the data on any cold, wet night. Especially because being a much, much larger data set it will be more meaningful.
Love the football data videos
Hooray! Crystal Palace is in the top 6!
I bet you can guess why I’m so excited… it’s been a looooooong time.
Great video!
Should have probably normalized it by the general average of points per game for the team, to see if they actually did better than they usually do. Could also be a way of bringing back the bigger teams into the equation
This is crazy good!
Wow Fulham out here catching strays.
Great video , great commentary
Keep it up
Much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed the video
Just subscribed mate, brilliant quality videos keep it coming 🤩🤩
Welcome aboard! Thanks for taking the time to watch and subscribe!
Methodology is Harvard standard mate
Wait until you watch the next one ...
Look at the climate data for Wellington New Zealand, my team is definitely used to wet cold and, importantly, windy games. Paulsen will do it on a cold wet Tuesday night in Stoke
Blimey, I'll make sure to pack a brolly when I visit.
amazing vid bud! keep up the goood work!!
Appreciated! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel
This video was superb!
…just use Leeds instead 😂
Wonder how the stats change when you include the Championship/EFL as well...
(Not saying you should do that, that would be a statistical nightmare)
Oh no, please don't give me any ideas ...
Yeah, Stoke is mentioned because it’s a windy hell hole.
Love love this channel
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the videos
Top video mate keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Really appreciate it
Geography, weather, football. The toughest thing must have been all that analysis.
Your content is so good! Keep it up :)
Thank you! Hopefully more of the same on the way
This was absolutely hilarious, love these kinds of totally pointless but incredibly fun ideas. Personally, I think I would’ve factored in Wednesday nights as well, and maybe even Thursday nights, as they still fit the vibe of midweek I hate my life football, while also increasing the sample size. I also wonder quite how it would look if championship data was added due to how many midweek games are played there, but I doubt you have many more plans to check historic weather records 😂😂
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I personally never want to see another weather report again ... regardless more silly & useless videos on the way!
