This channel is gonna blow up, trust me. Top editing, and with Tifo being purchased by The Athletic and becoming a bit more corporate a lot of people want original animated content about football stories. Keep it up mate!!!
As a stoke fan, I have to say that we get that name because of the sheer temperature and wind, the gaps in the stadium make for huge gusts of wind, and it’s in a place that is VERY cold, and it’s by a waste disposal facility and sometimes stinks, so it can really hurt even the home fans
I’m not British, so this is the first time I hear about the cold wet Tuesday night. Funnily enough my team (Mexico city’s Pumas) is actually kinda known for their dry sunny Sunday noon games, so I guess they can’t make it on a cold wet Tuesday night in Leeds 😅
Over here in Brazil, we say Real Madrid woudn't be able to win more than a few matches on a national second division campaign, with state of the art chaos and misery. Same vibes, I guess.
@@trident272-m6qThat there is basically nothing intimidating about going to play in west London at a stadium with a name which includes the word cottage.
Man, you really should have added cold wet Wednesday night games, as many still say "but can they do that on a cold rainy WEDNESDAY night at Stoke"! That'd another fun video!
Nice research. There were loads of misconceptions about the Stoke team at the time, usually painting the team, club, and area in a more negative light than the reality. Even the subject of this video is a backhanded compliment.
I just love the style of posing a question that you didn't know you cared for, getting you invested into it and then finding a solution to it. Every vid is journey and i am here for it. Love the tifo style of animations too...have been looking for something like tifo for so long.
Really good video, a neat little exploration of football mythos. The position of the Brit alone on a hilltop with open corners really amplified the effect of the general weather, to the point it was worse inside the ground than even standing in the car park. Add to that the fact I've seen rain so thick there you couldn't kick the ball off the ground (look up our league cup tie vs Man United in 2012) and frankly I don't think there's anything beating a cold wet Tuesday night in Stoke, certainly not for spectacle at least.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the channel. If you're looking for inspo from a motion perspective, I highly recommend Vox's videos - I often draw inspiration from them. They create a lot of great work.
I am absolutely shocked that phrase was only coined in 2010, it seems to have been around forever. I could have sworn it was from the late 90s. Also, respect for the effort you put into researching all this stuff. I loved it. Thank you.
The mythologising of Stoke was picked up by a contributor to humerous Private Eye column. It featured, until recently, a fun collection of extreme posters with names such as Tim The House Husband, Gilfy Gracie, Darling Deneeze and...Stokie Steve. The last mentioned usually closed the debate (held by 'moderator' Bogbrush) with "Come up her to Stoke and I'll kick your fxxxing head in". I wonder if the column started in 2010. Anyway, quality channel. As a Spurs fan it pains me but I enjoyed your 'colour of' North London one as well. Subscribing and good luck.
Wonderful video mate. Engaging and well produced in all aspects. Looking forward to your next upload. With the quality of these videos your channel is definitely going to grow, keep at it! Great channel name too.

Great Video! Amazing work and dedication put into it. If it’s just you putting in the work it was incredible. Like university thesis level stuff. Keep up the the great work.
Excellent video, thanks. Funnily enough I've often wondered this myself, so it's great to see. Not suggesting you do, but keeping it in the spirit of Gray, it'd be good to see it for 'weekday' instead of 'Tuesday' as I imagine he was talking about cold, wet, windy weeknights rather than any specific weekday - which doesn't make any difference. That way would give you two or three times more data to work with.
Appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! If I'm being honest, this was my initial plan, but just analysing the Tuesday night games drove me nuts. Would have loved to have done every other weekday, but I may have caved my own skull in.
Great work - bringing receipts to any football conversation is super important. I used to get help with my youth team from a proper QPR coach. He told me “opinions in football are like arseholes - everyone’s got one”. Hence, bringing evidence is a must, I find.
Enjoyed every detail went into figuring the toughest team to play on a CWTN. Could've included the general sentiment of a cold rainy mid-week fixture instead of just Tuesday with an either condition for weather for cold or wet. Also could've kept Monday night/ Friday night kick-offs. Championship sides inclusion too. More data would've made this list such fun. Anyways love the vids the format and editing. Quickest sub on YT 👍
I’m glad that there are people like you, willing to do some useless data videos to keep us entertained. Loved it. You have my like and my subscription.
To get a large sample size, it'd be fun to extrapolate the cold, wet Tuesday night into a cold, wet Midweek night and include Wednesdays and Thursdays. I think it would still keep within the theme of the quote.
Vers cool keep up the good work. kinda feel like you should have shown the team who overperforms the most on cold tuesday nights compared to their regular games tho
Definitely something in this at Elland Road. Quite a few teams that are good fail to turn up midweek. Bournemouth being the most memorable example of a theoretically decent team from down South that can't hack the cold North midweek fixtures.
Excellent video! Very funny. The only slight complaint I have is that you could have compared the PtsPCWTN to some other metric such as the PtsPSSA (Points per sunny Saturday afternoon) and then taken one away from the other to see how big of an effect it actually has - Chelsea and Spurs on 3.0 PtsPCWTN makes sense because they're top teams of course but if they usually average 2 pts a game (bit high admittedly) for a normal Saturday 3pm kickoff then most of that effect can be minimised. Just an idea!
Btw, agree with all the others. This channel is going to grow massively if you keep putting out this quality of content. If i could suggest one thing, it'd be to try not swearing in the videos.
The city name may be Wolverhampton, but we do refer to the city as Wolves quite often. For example, whilst at Keele Uni (in Stoke, funnily enough), I would refer to myself as being "from Wolves" to people I met. Much easier than the quadrisyllabic "Wolverhampton" over my eighth cup of malibu-coke on the SU dance floor.
Ahh, I can shed some light on where Andy Gray got this saying from..... It has been measured that the playing surface at Stoke, Pitch level, can be 10' lower than the temp outside the ground because of the way the wind blows through the gaps in the stands. . and if it's raining it just adds to it... but when you have the likes of Lionel Messi, aware of that and quoting, cold wet Tuesday night... well you are never going tp loose it....
Great video! Should have probably normalized it by the general average of points per game for the team, to see if they actually did better than they usually do. Could also be a way of bringing back the bigger teams into the equation
I like Lionel Messi's answer to this question best, which was that when he was 11 he had to score against grown men on torn-up glass-strewn pitches in Rosario Argentina.
This is great! Being a stats nerd though, I'd argue that differing sample sizes here would certainly be biasing the results. Leeds might be top of the list, imo. A quick and dirty bias correction here would be to 'assume' each team played two more games and won one and lost one and recalculate the metric.
Wolverhampton makes sense. It's not far from West Bromwich, whose The Hawthorns stadium always seems somewhere between cold and freezing due to elevation.
I think what you'd ideally want to calculate is a CWTN points differential to control for the strength of the away team. If Pullis' boys pulled off a turgid draw against Chelsea on a CWTN that feels like the essence of the saying wheras beating a lower table side doesn't feel the same. Therefore, for each CWTN, calculate the difference between expected points (the average of the homes sides record against the away side in non-CWTN fixtures) and CWTN points. Of the big 6 teams, who has the best record on a cold and wet Tuesday? Because Messi would have likely have played all of these teams in the CL on a tuesday. By figuring that out, it gets us a step closer to knowing if Messi could get it done on a cold, wet Tuesday night somewhere in England.
Your question really intrigued me, so I did some digging. The great man has played 8 Tuesday night games in England, but only 3 could be considered cold and wet as per the conditions of the video; a 1-0 win over Liverpool, a 1-0 loss against Man Utd and a 3-1 loss against Man City. I don't think that's necessarily a big enough sample size; BUT Andy Gray may have been on to something ...
