Not mentioned: -Judge 3 does a significant amount of shield damage -Not sure about this, but I think opponents don't get their up-B back offstage if they get hit with Judge 1 since it does no knockback -Side tilt (Lion) is actually a great kill move at high percents, sometimes it'll be the only kill move you can land -Down tilt (Manhole) is really hard to land (not so great startup and lag, doesn't hit aerial opponents) but kills even earlier than side tilt -Oil Panic (down B) is a fantastic move for all projectiles due to both absorbing and reflecting. The full-bucket attack is crazy fast (frame 2?) and has a multiplier on absorbed damage, so it can do massive damage if you got good projectiles. It has multiple huge hitboxes too, so it can hit opponents from a good distance away sometimes. Also, using the move a certain way in the air lets you "bucket jump" as a recovery mixup, Maister does it constantly -Back air (Turtle Bridge) is crazy good offstage, he did mention that but kind of undersold it. -Because you can air dodge out of up-B (Fire) by dropping the parachute by flicking down, you can recover a little extra if you didn't quite make it to the ledge for some reason. -His duck is very low, you can actually low profile a whole lot of stuff with it. -Up tilt is difficult to land but it can start combos if you do hit with it. (It's also a fantastic taunt.) -Down throw->Judge is a common combo, it works pretty well -Jab (Greenhouse) finisher can actually kill at ledge at high percents, you'd be surprised -Chef (neutral B) is great for holding off heavies on the ground, too. Ganondorf in particular has basically no answer for it, you can rack up crazy damage just by hitting him with the food over and over as he fails to get around it. Also, if people manage to get through it to you, the pan has a flame hitbox that sends them back into the food. -His pummel (grab hit) is one of the fastest in the game apparently, so it's always worth it to get a few hits in before throwing
Fair is good for combos of you fast fall at the right time, it can lead ito tilts and Smashes at low percents and around 50 percent you can run and get an up b, fair, nair, basically anything, sometimes even judge, and around 70 you might be able to get an up b. Also I think the start of up b sends the opponent at a different angle when on the ground
Just a few reasons why Up B, I mean Game and watch is great: -Up B has a giant horizontal hitbox -Up B is a good recovery move -Up B can gimp many recoveries -Up B is an insane out of shield -Up B has good knockback -After you Up B you can still attack -After up B you can airdodge -Up B is almost impossible to edgeguard -Up B can combo into Up air and Nair -You can Up B to escape combos -Up B is just a good vertical recovery
Bruh speaking of upbeat I had only one stock left against a Byleth with two sticks. I killed her with upbeat offstage (she slammed into bottom of stage, then into blast zone) and waited around 3 minutes for sudden death by using upb. When sudden death came I shielded into upb (she dodged upb idk how) then into Nair and won. An interesting thing about down air. If you are high up in the air and try to down air you can do a few things: 1) When you come down and uit the ground, after falling from a high altitude, you have basically zero end lag and can combo instantly with either down smash or side smash. 2) you can actually cancel out of your down air if ur falling a decent distant and with this you can throw your opponents off by going for another down air while you just cancelled your previous down air. Or you can go into other attacks or air dodge past opponents if their waiting for you to come down right next to them
i play this little thing since brawl, i am very agressive with him tho, first time watching a guide to improve him, to realize i was doing it wrong. here there is no competitive scene whatsoever (small city in argentina) and only play with some friends. love the guide and would love more a puff guide to improve my mains in ultimate.
Ironically on release and still now G&W is my only classic 9.9 clear, and I've run it with everyone. To think that now he's becoming popular I think it's time to pull my boy back out.
Mario at 60: I'm fine Me: Dsmash into neutral b into jab lock into fsmash is true at 35 for damage, dsmash into neutral b into charged fsmash for kills. you forgot to mention that the 3 hammer does a LOT of shield damage (bomb to 3 will break shield) and it will cause tech chases at mid to high percent, sending the opponent behind GnW. Also, no discussion of down B whatsoever??? Bucket is godlike in certain MUs.
I just nair at G&W with Link and it trades, then I rinse and repeat until the knockback is enough that he can no longer upb drift to ledge. Not every character has an awesome lasting hitbox sex kick like Link does tho so most people struggle with his recovery.

I've been a game and watch main for a couple months now since he's the only character i really enjoyed playing. I'm fairly new to smash so I'm pretty trash lol
Hint for game & watch players when your offstage before you do up b do oil panic (down b) so you can kinda glide to go farther. And I won at least 5 games with that down b air
I actually made a mechanic you can put yours into. If you have a grab combo with Mr. Game and Watch. When the opponent is on a Platform. Bomb them right in front of their face so the bomb hits while you land. Grab the opponent and do your grab combo. Not that good but it gives you more percent for your combo.
I know, stupid question- but when you say that you can combo off it with nair at low percentages or up air at higher percentages (at around 1:16), are you talking about when the enemy is at low/high percent damage? Or yourself as the player, G&W? Edit: I'm new to smash, but now that I think about it, I'm guessing you mean enemy percentages like I originally thought. Since they'll be launched higher with higher damage %, you'll have to use a diff follow-up attack after up-b to reach them. Your % shouldn't matter in this. That's what I assumed you meant at first, but has to ask to make sure. After pondering it for a minute tho, I think it clicked for me lol 😏

I'd also recomend everyone who sees this video to go watch rekzius' video about GW's hitboxes, since some of them are really... funky. Like how side-tilt does way more knockback aginst opponents on the ground than in the air, and other weird and fun stuff. (Allthough some stuff might not be accurate anymore, u know updates n stuff but there's always ultimateframedata.)
It doesn't break shields, it just does lots of shield damage, comparable to how much 9 does. It probably wouldn't break a shield unless it was already significantly weakened.

Great basics vid! I loved GnW as a side cheese character in brawl (skipped sm4sh). However, im not sure how hes super different in playstyle aside from the up b shenanigans? I end up falling in regular neutral and just bombing like its ww2, but it seems the same. Get a hit confirm, do a combo, back to bombing? Aside from playing air games with up b combos thats different? Like i cant tell if i should be super aggressive or passive etc. Might be my inexperience or rust showing, and i know this is super vague, but i just got my ass handed to me online figuring it out. GAW is more offstage king in a world where all of the characters prefer stage aerials. He has good hitboxes and many more options offstage is basically it.
Wait no to play him all you need to know is up b to down air neutral b and down smash to forward smash or forward tilt. But in all seriousness my buddy mains game and watch and I have been saying this character is top/high tier since we started playing. His frame data is insane and his weight almost causes him to live longer its hard to explain but I have taken game and watch to 180% multiple times without being able to kill even while landing smash attacks.
If you could give some love to a pacman guide considering tea just won a-tier that would be cool. I would love to see if i can learn anything new and i see alot of people wanting to try and pick him up

Probably impossible. You opponent will just shield and punish, or harass you with projectiles.

Probably one of my most hated characters. This was insightful in learning his weaknesses at least.
Oil panic is also so much better in ultimate than it has been in previous smash games, thanks to the reflection properties.
I also like that G & W's d. air deals damage through platforms.

Is there a way to make sure your character is going to do a dash attack as soon as you start moving? I always end up doing a smash attack...
Set your right stick to tilts and just smash both sticks in the same direction
G&W up smash is apting named the idiot magnet cause you have invincibility this leads to people thinking you can contest that attack with another one or people try to bait it out and it has so little n lag that it will hit you with a second one

I believe it only works after someone has attacked your shield.
You just have to quickly input it after dropping your shield. I think that counts as Up-B out of shield?..
