    In this DIY diary, I build my friend Jes the IKEA HACK version of her favourite mid-century modern sideboard. With the use of 3 IKEA IVAR cabinets, I completely turned an awkward nook in her apartment into a functional desk/storage cabinet. This build was super simple and great for renters looking for storage/desk solutions in their home!

    I love these ivar cabinets, it’s so helpful to find an affordable piece that’s made from actual wood rather than chipboard and veneer. I made a tall cabinet by stacking two on top of each other and putting little hairpin legs on the bottom 😄

    • @hannahl610
      @hannahl610 3 года назад +1

      @@hllymchll i think it’s three cabinets (the deeper 50cm ones) plus a tall shelving unit. The stove is freestanding but she did fit a sink in one of the cabinets. She used kitchen cabinet feet and put a worktop over the top. It’s got a clear lacquer for waterproofing I think. Ivar cabinets are slightly cheaper than the metod kitchen base cabinets, but once you add the cost and time of paint / lacquer maybe it works out about the same

    • @swiinka
      @swiinka 3 года назад +1

      @@hannahl610 Interesting! I have some Ivar open shelving in the kitchen and a tall metal cabinet (and some drawers), but it's never occurred to me to use the cabinets! The metal ones would be probably awesome!

    2/ Kudos to Dad for the running power in the She-shack
    3/ Obi Woof Kenobi to Shark-dog? SHARKNOBI! (͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖)👌
    4/ I'm always amazed at the results - despite some hiccups you can encounter (rained on boards suck) - and by the inventive things you can do with basic furniture. It looks nothing like the intended IKEA product and 10x better than what I imagined doing into the video :)

    this was so perfect!! Fit the space to a tee!! I freaked out at the crewel needlework of the plants on a ladder framed on the desk! I made this same piece in the early 70's and gave it to my mom for Christmas. It hung in my mother's home till her death in 2012. Taking it down to sell the house on closer inspection the fabric was so covered with nicotine ( both parents were heavy smokers) that I was not able to save it. Other needlework gifts were Cross stitch & framed under glass so they were safe. It was Fun this morning to see the plant ladder again it was a crazy project with lots of unique stitches. Love your show.

    Omg, another gem!! This turned out so well, and better than the original sincee it can also be used as a desk! We’ve been trying to decide if we want to diy something like this or continue waiting to come across something we can upcycle second hand. You always make the DIY option so tempting! 🤩

    My current style is more acrylic and iridescent. So my design would use the open shelving look, but clear acrylic door protection. Also, I would probably design a crank action popup sewing machine space that hides away when not in use, leaving a clean and clear counter space.
    Not that I have any woodshop experience. I just design things in my head. Your execution skills ROCK!

    I love this desk unit, a lot! I would have found the cabinet already assembled at a store that sells unpainted furniture, then I would have either used a heavy plywood for the top (pieced together), or long wide pine boards glued together.

      If you do it, maybe see about stacking another board on top to give a thicker look and then edging it with trim. That will make the desk part look more substantial.

    Damn cool project! And should be fairly easy for anybody to modify to their needs.
    I have one suggestion - drill the pocket holes on the other side. There's two reasons: First- the other angle will make sure the screws bite into more wood (Steve Ramsay recently did a short about this, incidentally) and hence give you more strength. And second- the holes will be out of sight even when the shelves are empty. The ones down low will be on the bottom and the ones up top get covered by the attached table top. As an added bonus I would guess this would allow you to use at least four screws per corner since you don't need to consider being discreet with the look.
    But I love it all the same! (And of course I caught the Anakin quote, since you asked)
