    For extra strength I would suggest laying the IVAR cabinets on top of 3/4” plywood base and attaching the legs to that instead of the cabinets.

  • @loserplanet

    Love it! Gorgeous! I think you should attach the backing. I had a piece of furniture (an armoire) that had the backing fall off. It was too small and I never bothered to replace it. The backing actually gives it structural stability- I didn't know this! My piece ended up getting all wonky and the drawers would not close right after a while. You could always cut holes in the back for your cords...I love how creative you are! This looks so expensive and fresh!

    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  4 года назад +1

      Great tip! I just left it off, but I totally could have cut holes, like you said.

      The backing on the ivar is paper thin, guys. I don’t think it’s collapsing without it.

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 4 года назад +1

      @@MeganBell 🤔 If followers are worried about stability, they can add four square -or- quarter round trim pieces (8 pieces total). Cut slightly smaller than depth of cabinet to fit each inside each corner.
      •Pick wood screws or finishing nails that will go thru trim piece into the interior side as well as top/bottom (w/o piercing all the way to exterior of cabinet when the nail or screw is all the way in).
      The fact two cabinets are screwed together in the center could also improve overall stability. If that's the case, you could scale back trim in outer corners only (4 pieces total). Something like that would help prevent any potential wobble or collapse. 🦋

    This is stunning, as usual. Love that you are showing how to uplevel inexpensive furniture too and not destroy antiques!
    It would be awesome if the makers of RUclips would stop promoting Amazon and promote other makers and Indie businesses instead. You can find GORGEOUS furniture legs and knobs etc on Etsy for example for a super reasonable price OR even just really unique details that people might want to use if they were told to visit that site instead. I have purchased both authentic MCM legs and reeeeally gorgeous acrylic and gold leaf legs for the same amount as I would have paid on Amazon. With the number of people who have been stuck at home doing projects it was a huge missed opportunity to support the small businesses and artisans who need it.

      @@MeganBell No harm, no foul. We all live & learn.🤓Personally, I hate adjusting the doors on IKEA hinges. It seems to take me forever to get it just right.
      🎉BTW, this is a beautiful project. Brilliant that you painted🖌it before assembling! Added those sexy brass feet👏. That cane seriously ☄glams☄up the Ivar workhorse.🌟See this as a great application to conceal ugly speakers in a storage bench seat too.
      FYI: To make interior look more finished down the road, you might consider adding a trim piece over cane edge & staples w/finishing nails👍.
      Even w/a brilliant T-square, I have proven absolutely hopeless about measuring📐. 👨‍🔧Much to the distress of my DIY/carpenter dad as well as my own frustration, still can't seem to get same measurement📏twice.
      😉Chalked it up to influence of my mom's dyslexia. Makes it feel far less humiliating for someone who skews perfectionist not to be able grasp something other's find such a cinch.
      🤔 For that reason (& the fact I don't own any power saws), might have hardware store cut a 1×2" pine board Shaker Style (8 long pieces + 8 shorter bits) to dimension of each door in order to make my own cabinet door where I can sandwich cane between 2 frames.
      I do have a round drill bit to cut indentation for hinge, but could always do a standard hinge too. Add slim/flat trim (maybe even a few paint stir sticks if cheaper). All cut & nailed to fit on "rear" interior door on each side as a "lip" in center to conceal any nasty potential gap too.
      😁 Sadly, did not follow after my dad with his skill in wood-working. Feel fortunate I gleaned enough knowledge to fake some things. Plus, as you mentioned, spackle & paint cover a world of sin.
      ~~~~~~~~~~
      ♻️ Are you going to repurpose your 4 pine door cut outs? Could make a variety of items.
      💕Like a rustic or mod riser shelf stand w/fence post or wooden knob as feet (or source more brass). You could use one by itself or stack multiples on a buffet. 🍥Could be multi-tier charming cupcake or dessert display🍰. Maybe even hold some mugs set out for a special coffee service☕. Different levels always make a tablescape more interesting.
      🛑You could also make some kind of signage or wall art🖼. With a pair of brass drawer pulls on each end, you could make a cheeseboard🧀. Or, a 🥗lap👩‍💻 tray w/solid plank support or post feet too.
      If DIY'd cane doors, would consider utilizing four reserved Ivar doors to make an etagere for 🌱plants or⚱objects d' art🗿 using a combo of posts & bun feet. Maybe even create a rolling cart w/a pair of towel rods on top as handle with casters on bottom.
      🌎Just suggestions, hate seeing useful items tossed in landfill🗑. ☮💛🌼
    Awesome job! So Inspiring! Quick question is there a reason you selected a latex paint vs. something like Fusion Mineral or a Chalk Paint? New to all this and just wondering about the choice to use Latex vs other options. Benefits?
      LOL! I thought it came in quite handy when I did this project. I don't think I have any buckets large enough to fit the caning.
    So lovely! Which webbing size did you go with? It’s hard to visualize the size of the holes on the website! (3/8in, 1/2in, etc)
    Did you pre drill the wholes before screwing the legs in? And what screws did you use to connect the two
    Love it!! Did you attach the caning to the doors while it was still wet or did you let it dry flat first?
    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  4 года назад +5
      Still wet!
    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  4 года назад +3
      That way when it dries, it shrinks a bit and lays nice and flat.
    LOVE this video! Im going IKEA to start this project! I was wondering what the exact cane is that you purchased on the website and how much you purchased. Is there any way for you to comment and let me know? Thank you and I love your channel!
    Can the doors be closer to each other so that when they are closed you don't see a gap? Or is just that way?
    Like the video... was curious how the doors are holding up. The short grain at the top and bottom could be problematic. (Especially with young children)
