That's very true. I feel we've been shown multiple times now how much it attacks the short castle. It knows from playing against itself that's not good, so it likes mobility. Humans don't attack the same way, so we don't get punished for the auto-castling we do. If I play with that much mobility, I'm constantly hanging pieces, getting forked, pinned, forced blocks.. The nice thing about something like AlphaZero or Leela as opposed to something like Stockfish is that their evaluation functions are computationally expensive and are essentially compressed versions of game tree search using similar evaluation functions and ultimately based on winning. This iterated distillation and amplification approach means that a human can't learn to copy what stockfish does. you can't think about millions of moves. At 24:00 Levy asks questions about why Alpha Zero values King mobility. I think the emphasis is King safety, and an aspect of safety is not getting trapped. The more a King is limited in movement, the more threats arise on the board that can be used against the King. So basically, a limited King means the number of threatening moves for the opponent increases. These additional threats increase the breadth of the decision tree, making it more possible to find a winning line. It reminds me a bit of the old saying: the threat is greater than its execution. And the limited King concedes threats to the opponent that they might not otherwise have.
Great video idea. I've been hearing for a long time that GMs nowadays have been supercharged compared to yesteryear due to computer analysis, and this video has done a great job explaining how and what they take away from engines.
Gotham asked the rhetorical: "If you get a winning advantage in 20 moves at top level chess, what more can you ask for?" Based on today's match between Navaro and Baskaron, the answer is "a resignation in 9".
Loved this video. Cool to see how computers are informing chess. It makes sense that a material focused view of chess would fall prey to AlphaZero’s control of piece activity and game tempo.

Magnus used to be a super attacking and sacrificial player when he was young. Then when he matured he shifted to a technical, grindy style. It's really cool that he's kind of returning to his youth and playing riskier and crazy chess sometimes.
Nah he is always very technical and grinding machine. Like even in this alpha zero style play he is just grinding out the position and in between some spicy sacrifices. His main advantage against every other top player is his image and aura of being a engine in endgames, the so called Magnus effect
The queenside castle at 24:05 doesn't seem like a "king mobility" thing to me; I thought that was by far the most natural-looking move. It just seems like a tempo-efficient way to bring out the a1 rook and defend the hanging g2 pawn simultaneously.
It’s interesting to hear Levi say how much AlphaZero loves the Catalan in the context of the most recent World Championship where we watched Magnus play that opening 372820182 times in a row.

Absolutely love your analysis and your passion. You have got me back playing and learning. A big THANK YOU!! Jimk
love alphazero games, would love to see more of the games analysed, I have only ever seen ten games analysed and when there are a hundred of them that's really a missed opportunity to learn.
(but 50 years in the future there is probably a quantum computer that has solved chess, so I imagine everyone will start the at least the same four moves)
It is 1:30 a.m in Azerbaijan now and i was searching for my usual bed-time video when i got a notification. I really appreciate your frequent uploads. Спасибо Леви!
Slav azerbaijani?
Привет с России
@@LeoKillsIt no, i am fluent russian speaker and as i know Lewy also knows russian i wrote "Thanks Lewy" to him in russian
@@yHdra Привет:)
@@LeoKillsIt btw i forgot to mention that we learn russian in school. 95% of schools have so "russian class" where education is in russian instead of Azerbaijani. Also russian is thought in "azerbaijani class" as a second/third language, english being third/second language. In "russian class" russian and azerbaijani switch places.
25:25 "even if you don't blunder a bishop in one move..." and Levy continues to blunder a bishop in one move :D
I got drawn to this because of RUclips recommended algorithm. I have now binge watched so many videos. Thanks yt
Love how Levy tells us to get outta here!
I don’t usually comment but I’m continuously impressed by the sheer quality and quantity of the videos gothamchess pumps out. by far my favorite chess creator
Very impressive. His enthusiasm is infectious. Plus he's a really good instructor
I love how every other RUclipsr has like only 30% of people subscribed and then there comes Levi with over 60%. Amazing!
I just love how energetic Levy always is xD
It makes sense that a material focused view of chess would fall prey to AlphaZero’s control of piece activity and game tempo.
thank you so much for being relatable and explaining things so efficiently. I started my chess immersion watching Hikaru and your goofy thumbnails deterred me for some reason at first, but then I realized I had no idea what Hikaru was saying, haven't missed a video since!
To the 44% who didn't sub. What are you doing, take a walk, come back, and sub.
They were so distracted watching his video they forgot lol
@@muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- lol im one of them until yesterday

love your AlphaZero serie Levy. Even though agadmator did cover some of the alpha's games and i did watch it all, your vids are still very fun to watch. I think this is mostly due to the amount of energy I can feel from you. Good job, keep going
"Don't move a rook four times in a row unless your Magnus Carlsen." hahaha
ive started think that Levy is hidden russian after he says "Максим Матлаков" soo smooth

Your glasses are like D4 or E4... I can't decide which I like more
I think we’re all in agreement, the glasses are great
I guess since alphazero likes king mobility bongcloud is actually ascended
What the heck are these new glasses and why am i loving them so muuuuchhh
The real title should be:
How AlphaZero learned from Magnus Carlsen!
I wish to learn from Magnus, only to call him “Magnus sensei”
28:04 I come from the future to tell you that AlphaZero vs Stockfish has been recorded, great job as always Levi! :)
I started laughing so hard when he yelled “LOOK WHAT HES DOING TO LEVON!!”
Only 44% not subscribed??? Most channels that I've seen share this stat it's like 80% not subscribed. This is *insanely* good
0:58: Way better than most channels. All the other channels that do that have 9% subbed lol
This just goes to show how awesome your channel is.
26:09 I can't stop laughing. Get this man his million already!
Magnus :What opening are you suggesting alpha
Alphazero:😎just push your h or a pawn three times in a row😂😂
i’m rocking hard with the glasses levy. great video
I get the feeling that Magnus just wants to have fun in his games. But he still wins. That's how good he is.
The AI will help keep Magnus in the top for many years. His chess memory is out of this world.
The queenside castle at 24:05 doesn't seem like a "king mobility" thing to me; I thought that was by far the most natural-looking move. It just seems like a tempo-efficient way to bring out the a1 rook and defend the hanging g2 pawn simultaneously.
Natural looking move doesn’t mean what you think is a good move. But yes I agree
These glasses are looking really good and the shirt as well in my opinion
Basically Magnus is getting a software update 2.0 lol
24:02 was the moment I realised why I never skip Levys videos 😂😂😂
The best thing about this development is, that everytime I make a weird move I can just say: “AZ says it’s ok…”
"Seeing deep into the future is worth a pawn." Can't disagree with that.
It’s interesting to hear Levi say how much AlphaZero loves the Catalan in the context of the most recent World Championship where we watched Magnus play that opening 372820182 times in a row.
