I considered a Fanatec DD system when I was selecting a new base but Fanatec don’t ship to my country and the potential overseas supplier that would send it to me would not cover postage if it needed to be returned.
I’m glad I went for the SC2 Pro and purchased through Brett at HRS.
HRS are amazing at what they do and it was a pleasure ordering through them. The confidence that gives you as someone spending that much money can’t be underestimated.
The forums for the SC2 systems are also amazing - the developers are communicating directly with owners and troubleshooting issues in public.
    Great review Will!

Logitech g27 user since 2012, still going strong. That's a testament to Logitech's surprising build quality. Just got a real metal sim rig, new gaming computer, 34" LG Ultrawide, and TrackIR. Am more than happy with my current setup. The wheel and buttkickers will be next. My advice for just starting out with limited budget. Buy or build a decent rig, use a decently priced wheel and pedals, get a great gaming computer, and get a decent monitor properly mounted within a couple feet from you so you have a decent field of view. If you want to get the most out of your monitor get TrackIR, unless you go the VR route. As he said these wheels and anything extra such as shakers, wind simulators, motion platforms just add even more to the immersion. I would get a good basis and then when time comes start seeking for that added immersion. Having said this, im just a random RUclipsr so take my advice with a grain of salt.

@@wuzumaki dont know if you ended up getting the pro but I recently went from a DD1 to a simucube 2 pro and its been amazing, FFb is kinda similar in all honesty but the pro is far more refined, smoother, a little faster, and the build quality is for sure better, the QR system is on another level in all honesty, incredibly solid compared to fanatec, software Is also a step ahead with settings not available on fanatec like static force reduction which is great.
Fanatec is still a little simpler to use though, both and plug and play but simucube requires more from you to set up, like it won't operate unless you plug in the emergency stop, fanatec does not require this... also every fanatec wheel comes with a QR so you throw it on and go but simucube third party wheels require a base side QR connection. It means there are a whole load of high quality QR solutions out there but it is an added cost to consider.
Overall the simucube 2 is awesome though.

    • @wuzumaki
      @wuzumaki 3 года назад

@@jinx20001 I actually got the SC2 Pro a few weeks ago, and I do not regret it at all. Still getting used to it not being plug and play like my old Thrustmaster, but imo it's not a dealbreaker. It's definitely not something I would recommend for people that want something easy to use, it's more of an enthusiast product with a whole bunch of possibilites. Build quality is superb, it feels like something that belongs in a real car.
I was considering getting a Xero-Play QR system for my wheels, but ended up just getting a whole bunch of Simucube wheelside QR adapters instead, as the stock QR is rock solid, but also a whole lot cheaper. This is also one of the reasons why I did not get the DD2, because the QR had some flex in it.

    • @jinx20001
      @jinx20001 3 года назад

@@wuzumaki nice, yeh the fanatec quick release is just rubbish, a lot of people say there is no flex but i dont think they really understand the difference between no flex on the simucube and no flex on the fanatec... with the fanatec yes you can have very little to no flex if you try to move the wheel side to side but thats where the confidence ends, nobody would like to really pull on it because you WILL make it flex. the simucube is completely different... you cant even make that thing flex, it gives you so much confidence you imagine you could stand on it and there would be no movement its so solid and that is a big deal i think, nothing better than having full confidence in the build quality.

Some factors would make me choose DD2, besides being an exceptional base.
    * Varieties of Steering Wheels, at a very good price
    *No-wires
*5 year warranty (I think this would be the main one, after no-wires)
---In addition to compatibility with many games, and having fanalab, where I can create infinite profiles.

    • @nejcmirtic529
      @nejcmirtic529 Год назад +2

I mean to each teir own, but have seen this "a lot of wheels for a good price" too many times. But the superficial overview an average consumer has doesn't show them the more affordable wheels, the likes of Kapral racing, polesimer, simline etc. And most people ignore the fact that for a simple drift steerig wheel from Fanatec, you need the podium hub, which is 200€. Which in combination with play in QR and various build quality problems has driven me personally out of the Fanatec ecosystem. And would much rather have an aditional USB than needing to get every steering wheel fom the same company. So I sold every piece of Fanatec gear and gotten the SC2 Pro. For now all I can say is, it is built like a tank.

I do think you're spot on with the sc2 wheel cost and selection. I opted to run an adapter for fanatec wheels and keep my old wheels. Other than that my experience was opposite more consistent on sc2 and more glitches and clumsy jerky feel on the dd2. If had to do it again I would have gone sc2 instead of trying to save a few bucks going dd2.(at that time no idea what prices are now)

    Hi Will,
First of all: Thank you for so many great videos. It's always a pleasure to watch you race and review gear!
In this video you say that you guess that Fanatec will improve the FFB of the DD-Bases further more with new drivers and firmware. You're video is now 5 months ago. Now we are in February 2021 and the current driver ist the version 400 which came out in January 2021. It would really be great if you could give us an update of how much you think have the latest Fanatec drivers changed your feelings about the FFB.
I'm currently racing a Fanatec 2.5 Base with two Fanatec Wheels and only racing on iRacing. I'm thinking about upgrading to direct drive and of course wondering what to buy. So it would really be nice to know your opinion on the changes/improvements (if there are any) on the latest drivers.
    Thanks so much already!

Quality content and spot on analysis mate, I agree 100% with everything you said having had the DD2 previously and now the SC 2 Pro. I think an important thing to note is that the slightly better quality of FFB and fidelity on the SC product compared to the Fanatec product doesn’t necessarily make you a faster driver, BUT the overall nicer experience with the SC has made me want to hop in my sim more often and thus, improving my lap times due to the increased amount of practice. This is not to say that someone who has DD1/DD2, or any other wheel for that matter, can’t just be happy with what they have and really practice as much as possible to get improved lap times but in my personal opinion, having ‘nicer’ equipment will always make me want more seat time. Anyway hope you feel better soon mate, and keep up the good work!
P.s. I recently received the Simcore Z1 dash (Boosted media edition) and it’s pure joy to use, thanks for the recommendation!

I hesitated a long time to switch to SC2 Pro, coming from a DD2, as I expected only tiny improvements regarding FFB quality and was very happy with the DD2. Now that I can compare it, saying as a longtime very satisfied user of Fanatec wheelbases, it knocks the DD2 out of the park! The details and speed are ways ahead of the DD2 which came as a shock to me, regarding different reviews comparing and rating the two devices. Specific examples: Radical in iRacing -> you basically can drive the car with oversteer into corners and still being able to control it with the SC2 Pro whereas there was no chance doing the same with the DD2. Another one: GT3 in iRacing sucked big time with the DD2 (could be a bit improved with irFFB), very hard to actually understand what this cars are doing, with the SC2 Pro though, I actually understand what is happening and can react on it, not sure why though. Yet, it does not solve the problem of the snap oversteer the GT3s still have in iRacing. But it is a much more enjoyable drive with the SC2 Pro.
Another thing that I noticed that I do not have anymore at all, is depending on Sim&Car, oscillation issues. Had that with the DD2 occasionally.
Last point is the precision regarding built quality, there is absolutely ZERO flex on the SC2 Pro, which is probably not an issue when driving, but still feels very nice. Also the QR release was always kind of a hassle and I tended not to change wheels that often with the DD2, despite of having 3 very expensive wheels.
I left it open in the beginning if I would resell the SC2 Pro and keep the DD2 - now after tested it with AC, ACC (still sucks with the SC2, the FFB is JUST weird and does not reflect what you normally feel), rfactor2 and iRacing, I decided to say goodbye to the DD2.

I’m trying to decide between these two wheels. I am in particular interested in compatibility. I like all racing games now and future ones to come out. I have the feeling that I could be severely kept to only true race sims with the simucube but build quality is so much better. I have even read multiple forum accounts of Rfactor 1/2 having issues getting settings to not be terrible as well as acc having tough times to get good feedback. Then there’s some forums I read these popular but slightly older games producing some serious struggle to get them to even recognize the wheel or the feedback to even work slightly correct. I personally want to use the wheel due to its price on even more arcade style titles like grid and crew and apparently even the sim dirt rally 1 and 2 have struggles or might not work. So what has been your opinion for not only the simucube with R factor games and acc where it’s not always easy to either get the stuff to recognize or tune properly, and arcade race games where there may require more workout for not so good output.

I've had both units, the DD1 and the Simucube 2 Pro. Everything you're saying here is spot on, the QR, the built quality, the response and feel- EVERYTHING on the SC2 is better. There IS a bit more of a difference between True Drive vs Fanalab than I think you highlighted. There are so many more filters and options in True Drive. And the software just works. Fanalab is really lacking in comparison. Way less options, my DD1 would not detect oftentimes, and the filters don't seem to have as much of an effect for in-game feel. I was able to get the SC2 feeling perfect in every game way quicker than I could get the DD1. Your takeaway at 22:20 is right on the mark. The SC2 completely removes the lines between reality and simulation, the DD1 always reminded me it was a game. It's a no brainer.

Very good video. It sounds like you can't go wrong with either Fanatec or Simucube. My decision to go with the DD1 vs. VRS or Simucube came down to the ecosystem. I like cleanly integrated systems and was off put by the limited options for wheels for the Simucube & VRS. With the VRS I didn't want to have the external control box and huge control cables. So, I sacrificed the slightly higher fidelity that the Simucube and possibly VRS would give in exchange for the simplicity and ecosystem of the DD1.
I think we all made the right choice for ourselves - see you on the track!

I should add that I do notice the "graininess" of the DD1 when in the pits as you said as well as the occasional sharp feedback over tall curbs or when losing control. A bit disappointed on that front but hoping it will be resolved with software.
Another minor annoyance is that the instructions are not the best...I accidentally put the DD1 into CSW2.5 mode and the instructions say go look somewhere else because the controls vary from wheel to wheel. Understandable with so many wheels but a bit annoying. In that regard I would say Fanatec isn't really like Apple as they are not that polished...they are more like Microsoft whereas Simucube is perhaps more like Linux.

Up until a couple weeks ago I had purchased two wheelbases since 2017. Unfortunately, over that same period of time I was in ownership of 5. Two V2.5 bases (warrantied once) and THREE DD2 (warrantied TWICE). The current (third) DD2 started losing all power randomly a couple months ago (probably a PS issue). So,I have a Simucube 2 Pro sitting on my desk ready for install now. I always LOVED my DD2.. when it works. I'm happy to say the rest of my Fanatec equipment has been flawless. V3i pedals, shifter, handbrake, all five of my wheels. The wheelbases... Yeah, not so much. I'll take simple and bulletproof over built in gadgetry. Speaking of gadgetry.. he's on point regarding the urge to buy big on wheels on this platform. I have a GTX2 arriving shortly. And I REALLY REALLY like my Fanatec Porsche GT3R rim, but the Apple-ish practices means I would have to settle for a rim that only has 95% of it's features and getting it to that point creates other wonky situations I'd rather not deal with. I'll get my gadgetry elsewhere. I just want the wheelbase to do wheelbase things... like turn.

Great comparison between the systems and I completely agree with your conclusion. But there is one thing that was missing in my point of view. While the initial cost for a wheel in the SC ecosystem is higher, it should be mentioned that you can easily swap the rims on a B16M-SC within minutes, which reduces the costs for multiple wheels over time. Personally, I also was a little bit disappointed by the quality of the Fanatec wheel I owned when I used my CSL wheel base (Black Formula Wheel).
In the end, I switched to the SC2 Pro because of the smaller form factor, passive cooling and better build quality overall. I was also concerned because of the Fanatec support and their terms and conditions. As you said, most of these points are subjective and therefor it boils down to your personal preferences.

great review, thanks for the info. But now am still divided, Simucube 2 pro seems the best choice just because of the true to life experience. Otherwise DD2 has as you said cheaper wheels and software and consistency! But I mostly play RF2, then comes AM2 then lastly .. ACC.. So maybe I still would go for the Simucube 2 pro or wait until they do more refinement and include some console (PS5) support.

With Fanatec its cheaper if you stay in there ecosystem otherwise its the oposite. I have a DD1 with Formula V2 and Porsche 911 GT3 CUP and they are nice wheels. They are nice but not great. There are better options in quality outside Fanatec.

I have not used a simucube before but I will save you the trouble, go Pro vs DD1. My DD1 is fun but honestly feels like a stronger Logitech to me. It is not smooth and feels very robotic. Yes I am running all the latest beta drivers but its just the reality of it. It is also unacceptable that Fanatec still does not have a final driver version that can run without random bangs and knocks. The wheel rims and ecosystem is nice but I quickly realized I wish I just went Simucube first.

Hey Will! Great comparison and video! Regarding the FFB Quality:
    Did you tried rFactor2?
Did you erase the motor calibration of the Fanatec DD when you tested it?
And have you tried the Fanatec DD lately with the latest firmware v381? If so, in your opinion did it improve the FFB feeling and narrowed the gap even more to the SC2 Pro?
I recently tried both and made a super simple video about it, and I agree with you, SC2 Pro on rF2 feels more alive (lighter feel, slightly more detail) than the DD1 BUT the laptime is exactly the same and after a couple of laps you forget the differences that I think are now very, very small.

I'm a DD1 user because of availability when my G29 died in February. I was able to test SC2 Pro vs. DD2 (without high torque) at an expo in AC and the SC2 felt worlds better than the DD2 which was running on the 8-bit drivers back then.
Of course, coming from a G29 the DD1 is 1000x better, but I do miss the feel of a SC2. And that's also partly because of the Ascher F28 wheel that is more comfortable in your hands compared to the Formula V2. I find Fanatec's NASCAR wheel to be too thin as well. Of course that's very subjective, but I consider my hands "normal" wearing size L in Mechanix gloves and Alpinestars Tech 1 KX.
After 6 months of regular, but not crazy often use, I had to file for a RMA with Fanatec for a Motor Firmware issue. This is disappointing and most likely down to building it to a pricepoint, but I do have to give Fanatec credit for having dealt with the RMA quickly and efficiently both in communication and resolving the issue.
But still, if I see a used Pro with a Cube or Ascher wheel on sale I'll pull the trigger

I just bought a sc2 pro last week and I can say for the price of the accessories, if you just don't have enough budget, you can simply buy thrustmaster pedal and shifter first, then install a steering wheel from the real car if you got one (I have a spare Momo Montecarlo, I know that is stupid cause the thrustmaster gear just like a toy, and I have got no paddle shifters). I think it is more cheaper if you have to buy all gear at once because you have to at least buy one more Fanatec wheel for the dd1/2 if you don't have any Fanatec gear....

Also, I don't have any flex at all on my DD1 with QR. In fact I haven't upgraded it to QR2 as it works just flawlessly. Was I just lucky? Also not having any mechanical clunks in the DD1. Setup? Anyway thanks for the video. I would love to test a SC2. Curious about how they are different.

Hey Will, amazing video! I had a question about a point you make in the video: When you say the the DD2 works better across various sims, does that mean that the SC2 is incapable of getting the same FFB as the DD2 in those simcade titles, or is it just easier to achieve a decent feel with the Podium?
I am someone who is going to be purchasing one of these two bases, but I do tend to jump around sims quite a bit and I also enjoy the more simcade style games when using the rig with my wife.
I'm not afraid of spending time with the software to make it work and I've used the true drive software previously (I owned an SC2 pro for 8 months last year but sold it to a friend after a big and expensive move, just didn't have the space or time until recently) but if the fanatec is just better across the board and more consistent I'm not sure if the SC2 is the right choice for me given I only spend a third of my time in Iracing where the SC2 really shines.

I've also read many horror stories dealing with tech support/RMA's. IMO it shouldn't have taken this long to get the drivers and firmware updated beyond beta. For the money I'd rather deal with another company (and better FFB is a plus). They aren't even good about responding to people on their forums...
