Yarn over is great for flat items, or cardigans, etc. Yarn under is great for smaller, denser, shaped work, such as amigurimi. Neither is wrong or incorrect as you stated through the whole video.
I think what she's saying is that patterns are generally designed for YO patterns and using YU will produce an item that doesn't match the gauge etc. I realized that I have had those issues because I've sometimes used YU without even thinking about it.
I was thinking the same thing. When I first started crocheting, I used to yarn under while I was making hats. Lots of my crochet friends couldn’t get over how tight my hats were coming out. Then when I was trying granny squares they weren’t looking nice. Then my one crochet friend she was showing me then difference between yarning under and over. She said there is no right or wrong way to crochet but it can make a difference in what type of project you are making. She said typically most projects are yarning over and not under. But amigurumi is definitely one you would want to use the yarn under technique because of it being tighter. She did say in the video that the gauge between the two is definitely different and the tension is tighter. Which you can clearly see. But I agree with you, neither way is wrong but they have different purposes. I like being versatile and enjoy making anything from clothing to amigurumi.
Yarn under is way easier, tighter and is way more efficient in my opinion. I think it is more important to find something that works for you. There is no technical right or wrong. There is a right place for everything.
I agree that for me the yarn under is easier… but I always struggle with gauge and tension… now after 30 (or more) years of crocheting, I know why. (But I probably won’t change…😂)
I learned how to crochet by doing the yarn under technique, mostly because it was the most comfortable with the fact that I'm left handed. It's interesting to see the different ways to crochet, I dont necessarily think yarning under is the wrong way though if you're able to control your tension.
I find that combining the two when working in the round minimizes the misalignment of the point where you change rounds. The tendency is that it’s moving to the right if you’re right-handed. If you finish your stitch, be it sc or dc, with a yarn under (YU) this problem is more or less eliminated. So when I make a sc I do it YO+YU and for a dc it would be YO+YO+YU. Not sure if this makes any sense to anyone but wanted to share it anyway 🤣
About 45 years ago when I started crocheting, I learned using the YO method. And, in my opinion, it is easier than YU. While either method is an acceptable way, YO is my GOTO method. When you demonstrated the Tunisian YU method, it seemed to be very difficult to perform, so, I said (felt) "Ouch!" LOL ! I had just watched a video about how to do the Tunisian Smock Stitch, and, was shown to use both YO and Yu for that stitch. So, like you said, it depends on what effect you're going for as to which method you should use. And, I get why you say YO is correct .... Especially when making garments, with YO, your tension is more relaxed, and, your gauge will be better as that's the method most people use when working out a pattern for you to use. TYSM for sharing this video with us. I've been looking for such a video which explains these differences.
I yarn over by habit but I do like the yarn under look here, I’ll keep it in mind for when I need something tighter. I’m not bothered by any twists and I think it’s more a case of what each person is most comfortable with etc. I’m glad I know about yarn under if I’m low on yarn . Great video thank you xx
I found this video because I was watching a different video where the person was moving between a yarn over and a yarn under but calling the technique a yarn over and it was confusing because they were clearly moving the yarn under the needle and it was so confusing. I have only ever done yarn over stitching, and I didn't even know yarn under was a thing.😁 good to know all the differences between the two, thank you.
For some reason I had a bit of trouble until I noticed that you place you have your yarn coming in at the back of your finger. I have always had my yarn on the front of my finger. Once I used your way I had no problem. Now I’ll have to practice your way so that I do it automatically. Thank you for all these crochet tips. I have been crocheting for 45 years, but looks like I still have a lot to learn.
Great tutorial. I'm trying to get the grasp of yarn under simply for amigurumi. For years I've used yarn over with it and I think yarn under is cuter for amigurumi. I wouldn't care to use it for anything else though but that's just my opinion. Your video is very clear and concise. Much appreciated!
i was in the middle of a hand crochet w bernat big yarn and noticed i picked up a stitch and took it apart. when i restarted, i was mindlessly doing yarn under and wasn’t understanding why my stitches were looking different. so glad i noticed at a point where restarting yarn over on a new row gave the blanket an “intentional” pattern when finished lol
I used to do yarn under and then yarn over when pulling the yarn through to finish the stitch. I never realized what a difference it makes! I like yarn under for amigurumi but yarn over for flat/other projects. Very interesting!
Thanks for the video, I've been using yarn under to pull the yarn then completing with yarn over, of coz I didn't know the difference😃 that's how I've been crocheting since I was a kid
Thanks for the tutorial Nicki. I've been crocheting since I was 7 or 8 and I'm now 56, and I've never seen anyone do 'yarn under' until a few days ago when I went looking for Tunisian Crochet tutorials. I came upon one where they were doing the 'yarn under', and I almost had to twist myself inside out to watch, and then wondered if I'd been crocheting wrong my whole life. So thanks for putting my internal left, right, over, under sensors back on track. So given that 'YO' gives you a looser tension, does this mean that you don't need to go up a size or two for your hook, which seems to be suggested on most places I've looked?
It still leaves gaps, because you're fighting to get into stitches and the right stitches aren't very plump. I wouldn't recommend yarn unders for beginners, because they might feel frustrated with the tight stitching... harder to do.
I use the yarn under and finish out with a yarn over.. makes a neater stitch for amigurumi. The double yarn under is annoying for me. I guess everyone is different as I don’t struggle doing a yarn under for the first part of the stitch I do go up half a hook size when doing this method though.
I wonder if there’s a correlation between people who YU and are pencil grip crocheters vs. YO people who are also knife grip crocheters. Seems the most ergonomic with those pairings. Also, people who hold the loops on their hook with their index vs. the thumb. Hmm…🤔
Sometimes i used yarn under on my amigurumi.. but its different way of yarn under than yours.. i did yarn under in first step and then yarn over to finish the stitch… not both in yarn under..
I do the same thing for amigurumi. YU then YO to finish the stitch. The YO/YU to finish the stitch doesn’t really change the look of the stitch, only the tension. However, the first YO/YU is what changes the look of the stitch.
Great video, Nicki... You explained the difference between yarn under and yarn over very clearly. I saw a discussion about this a while back with a couple of the ladies insisting it didn't make any difference if you did yarn over vs. yarn under and that they weren't crocheting incorrectly doing yarn under. I wish they would have a chance to watch your video and see that there's a huge difference in how the crochet project turns out. I actually saw a video about a year ago where the "teacher" was teaching beginners using the yarn under method! I can't remember who it was anymore but I wish she could watch your video as well! Anyway, I've rambled on long enough! Thanks, Nicki, for taking the time to make this excellent video... I'm sure it will help a great many crocheters who aren't sure about yarn over vs. yarn under. ☺️
Agreed. I see lots of crocheters saying that they're doing a YO and even teaching or writing patterns, but then in their videos, they'll do a YU. Or sometimes they alternate during the same stitch. There is a difference. People seem to get offended. If the pattern says to YU for smaller, tighter projects, then do that, but don't call it a YO.
99% of the videos you can follow along with say “yarn over” - and it’s how I learned to crochet 20+ years ago. I *never* tried yarn under until a random Reddit post on amigurumi mentioned yarn under plus front loop only, gave both a try for my next amigurumi project and GEEZ does it make a difference! Tighter, tidier stitches for sure - but I’ll continue to use yarn over for things like scarves and blankets since it makes a looser, “drapier” stitch.
Both styles are correct. Yarn under is used for amigurumi, and yarn over is used more for your "regular" crochet. I appreciate the video though, I'm showing my mom to show her how to do yarn under for amigurumi!
I've never used yarn under for Amigurumi and. My patterns come out great, I dont really think it matters whether you yarn over or under for Amigurumi, I think it's all personal choice really,
For amigurumi, I only YU when working with “smooth” yarns to tighten everything up and minimize holes. But when working with chenille yarn for amigurumi, I YO since the chenille isn’t as stretchy so by yarning over, I add more flex/squishiness. Plus, I crochet much faster by yarning over. For all the other projects, I YO as it’s what I was taught and find the fabric I create is a little stretchier that way.
I guess this explains why I can never seem to loosen up the tight tension on my crochet until I go up so many hook sizes that the work gets sloppy. The tight tension is why I don’t enjoy crochet as much as knitting. It does make good stiff hat brims, though.
Thank you for the video. Why do you say it’s the incorrect way to do yarn under? At about 3:55 you say ‘incorrect way.’ But the yarn under looks correct. Thanks!
Apparently I’ve been doing it “wrong” for years lol To me under is way easier. It’s harder for me to do it over and the stitches look way sloppier. I’ll stick to what I know. Thanks.
I've read this before... It makes sense to use yarn under to crochet the toys super tight for the babies' safety. I guess there's a time and place for yarn under. I think that I would have a hard time getting used to doing yarn under, however. I'm so used to doing yarn over! I think Nicki did a great job crocheting using yarn under to show us the difference. 🙂👍
I do NOT believe there is a “Correct” or “wrong” way to yarn over or under! The under just makes a difference stich! It is very nice in blankets & scarfs. I’ve done both ways and there VERY NICE EATHER WAY‼️
I have always done yarn under. I have never done yarn over. My tension is fine, and my work looks great. Saying yarn under is incorrect is biased. I can work much faster yarning under and my hands, wrists, etc have never hurt. If you prefer yarning over, fine. but don't say yarning under is incorrect. Thats your opinion.
Ouch. Hearing the way I've crocheted for a decade is wrong kinda stinks.. i knew i did it differently then most people with how i hold it but i don't think it's wrong..

I think you mean the opposite
Yarn under is way easier, tighter and is way more efficient in my opinion. I think it is more important to find something that works for you. There is no technical right or wrong. There is a right place for everything.
You are right! I should have phrased it differently but I was taught that way. Need to remake the video
@@NickisHomemadeCrafts your video is perfect. it answered a question that i have had foe awhile.
@@NickisHomemadeCrafts it makes a huge difference... It made my work better🙂
I agree that for me the yarn under is easier… but I always struggle with gauge and tension… now after 30 (or more) years of crocheting, I know why. (But I probably won’t change…😂)
Yarn over is easier and more efficient for me. It’s probably how I hold my yarn and hook.
I learned how to crochet by doing the yarn under technique, mostly because it was the most comfortable with the fact that I'm left handed. It's interesting to see the different ways to crochet, I dont necessarily think yarning under is the wrong way though if you're able to control your tension.
I also do yarn under ... im right handed
I am ambidextrous I learn yarn over yet on certain work I do yarn under. Regardless of which hand I am using.
Same Im left handed and in my opinion I feel comfortable doing yarn under

I do yarn over, but tried the yarn under technique when watching this. I was surprised how much more difficult it was to grab the yarn and pull thru.
Not for me, it's more difficult for me to do yarn over.
Same here
I yarn over by habit but I do like the yarn under look here, I’ll keep it in mind for when I need something tighter. I’m not bothered by any twists and I think it’s more a case of what each person is most comfortable with etc. I’m glad I know about yarn under if I’m low on yarn . Great video thank you xx

Thanks for pointing out the difference! I knew I was not imagining it.
I have to learn yarn under to be able to crochet NICU octopuses as they need tighter stiches for the babies. This was very helpful, thank you!

Me too and i was hella confused!
No I'll try making a sample of 4!
yo all, yu all, yoyu, yuyo
I'm exited to see the difference :)
Thank you for the technique.. Never knew about it until now♥️

As a yarn under person, I Always have to go up 2-3 hook sizes
For amigurumi, I do yarn under and then over for each stitch and I think it’s the most popular way, it looks pretty good too
Yarn under is good for amigurumi, when you want your stitches nice and tight.

You are so very welcome
thank you for the video was clear and helpful in seeing the difference.
Lol why does this lady have such a vendetta against a crochet technique?
Just her opinion. What works for her
my thoughts exactly ... yarn under is great for amigurami! and i like the Xs!
i have always yarned under but you should do that for amigurumi which is fine for me

Could you do this video with some close ups. As it is hard to actually see what you are talking about. (twists)
I like them both.
So glad I watched this one I was thinking I was doing it wrong but I'm definitely going yarn over. Yeah me. Lol
I guess this explains why I can never seem to loosen up the tight tension on my crochet until I go up so many hook sizes that the work gets sloppy. The tight tension is why I don’t enjoy crochet as much as knitting. It does make good stiff hat brims, though.
I came to this video to see whether the way the yarn is wrapped makes a difference and if so, whether I cared. It turns out that it does and I do.
So glad you loved it and see the difference ❤️
So for Summer garments, yarn over; for Winter garments, yarn under ❄️🌞
I've seen people use combo, under and over, with each stitch!
thank you🥰💐
Im doing a flat amigurumi is a bunny shaped below which would be better
Which ever you prefer
Thanks for the video!
thank you!!
You're welcome!
I think it depends on what you want to make. There should be projects that benefit from the unique characteristics of yarn under.
Spark note for myself:
Yarn over = clockwise
Yarn under = counterclockwise
Thank you for the video. Why do you say it’s the incorrect way to do yarn under? At about 3:55 you say ‘incorrect way.’ But the yarn under looks correct. Thanks!
I need to remake the video. Both are correct. Just one is more known as the typical way.
..... I've been crocheting for 20+ years and never realized there was 2 ways..... i had to go crochet to see which way i actually do it😅
Apparently I’ve been doing it “wrong” for years lol
To me under is way easier. It’s harder for me to do it over and the stitches look way sloppier. I’ll stick to what I know. Thanks.
I agree I find yarn under much easier on my wrists too and a better tension for the finished product. .
People who make octopuses for preemies sometimes use the yarn under to make the stitches so tight.
Thank you for this video. 🙂
I've read this before... It makes sense to use yarn under to crochet the toys super tight for the babies' safety. I guess there's a time and place for yarn under. I agree, Char! Time & place, and all that. 🙂
Thank you😊😊😊🇨🇦
came here to learn yarn under for a graph poncho I'm making. apparently yarn under makes it look. better
I thought people only used yarn under for making stuffies so the stuffing doesn't show through.
I yarn under for sleeve cuffs and neck bands.
I’ve been wondering for a while, when you yarn over, are you supposed to do it twoards you or away from you, or does it not matter
❤️
Thank you
I do NOT believe there is a
“Correct” or “wrong” way to yarn over or under! The under just makes a difference stich!
It is very nice in blankets & scarfs. I’ve done both ways and there VERY NICE EATHER WAY‼️
Did you see my new version of this video?? ❤️

I do yarn under ... it feels more comfortable and easyer to do
So glad it was helpful 😀
I just realized today that I’ve been yarning under unknowingly 🙃 idk why my wrist likes to spice things up for me
Totally happens. I did that too when I was younger
In my opinion there is no right way and wrong way. Everyone is different and people prefer different things. For me I like yarn under.
Very true. So glad it was so helpful to you ❤️ thanks for watching my videos to the end 😀
I have always done yarn under. I have never done yarn over. My tension is fine, and my work looks great.

Not me literally realizing that I use a weird mutant combo of yo and yu when I crochet
I did that too once 😀
I didn’t know the difference 😳
I think I’ve been doing yarn under my entire life now I have to switch it up
I come from the back side not from the front
Looking at the Tuscan crochet that’s how I do it 😖😖
TFS
for amigurumi it is better to do yarn under,
Ouch. Hearing the way I've crocheted for a decade is wrong kinda stinks.. i knew i did it differently then most people with how i hold it but i don't think it's wrong..

1:11 Amigrumi artists 😢
Yarn under is not wrong, it's just different!
Unless you're doing amigurumi..... Then you'll want yarn under...smh.
😂 I've never heard of yarn under in my entire life. It's all personal choice.
Yes 😀
Thanks for the tip!
