Thank you for making this video, I was following a Tunisian crochet pattern, and the creator mentioned YO and YU. I had never considered there might be a difference, in that particular pattern it created the pattern. I now know thanks to your video the difference, as well as that I do half my stitch YU, and half YO!
Thanks for clairifying yo vs yu. I noticed that I typically mix my stitches. However I read in an amigarumi craft book to use the YU stitch, so trying that I noticed that the stitches are as you say, tighter so I see less poly fill when stuffing. It does take a certain amount of concious effort to not mix the two to keep your tension regulated. I have been crocheting for 50+years and didn't realize there was a difference until someone asked me to make an amigarumi project.
Thank you so very much for this video!! I never heard of yarn under before. This will be great for my future amigurumi projects as they never seemed to be tight enough. Thanks again!!! ❤
I've seen le petite Saint Crochet talk about this. She said she likes to use it for amigrumi but she said she does both because like you said it's really hard on the wrists.
Thanks for the demonstration, I always thought that someone who wrap there yarn under was doing the stitch incorrectly. I did know that it was an actual way of wrapping the yarn.
If you do yarn under then finish with a yarn over I find it very comfortable on wrist, it’s the second half of the stitch that effects the wrist and it looks just like yu, yu.
That's rather interesting.🤔 I never really paid too much attention to varying stitch appearance but I'm a mixer... I tend to yarn under when pulling up a loop through a stitch and then I use a yarn over to complete my stitches when pulling yarn through my hook loops to release them (sometimes I alternate YO & YU with no rhyme or reason - LOL!). I tend to crochet with a tight tension (and you just revealed why) but it seems like my hook loops release much easier when I pull up my loop with a yarn under. Is this just my imagination? 😄 I will have to pay closer attention next time to appearance. Thanks for sharing!❤
I hope I don't screw myself up, the next time I pick up my hooks, now that I've seen both ways!! 🤭 I have never heard about YU, nor have I seen patterns that show YU....only YO. It makes sense for certain types of projects as mentioned I guess; however, couldn't one just use a smaller hook? It is very interesting though.
I use the yarn under crochet stitch for hat projects only difference is l first yarn under but to complete the single crochet l yarn over its a beautiful stitch and less strain on your wrists

Wow thank you so much for this, I’ve been doing amigurumi for 6 years and didn’t have a clue about yarn under 🤦🏻♀️
