I love getting “permission” to lose my points rather than having holes or frayed edges in my quilt. Im finishing a quilt I sewed MONtHS ago, because my perfectionist ways frustrated me so much I didnt finish it. Just a tiny thing, but i can finally finish my Half and Half quilt top. Thank you!
I don't know if you come back and check comments, but this video has finally made me understand how to square up. I've watched a lot of videos and none of them worked for me. Your video, which shows things that I have experienced, has made all the difference for me. Thank you so much for this!
I’m glad you’re back. I love your tutorials about all the finishing and planning and hints for putting a quilt top together, more than most non quilters realize. Glad your back. 😃😃💕
Thank you, Natalie! I’ve sewn of few quilts in the past, but am doing more now. Your tips on some of the finer points of creating beautiful quilts is such a benefit! Can’t thank you enough! 🙂
Natalie it’s so good to see you. This lesson was so helpful for me. It is the best way to square up large blocks. Wish I had known this on my last quilt. Looking forward to more in this series. Thank you!
So happy you are back Natalie and what perfect timing for this topic. I just pulled out of my UFO stash a 12 block sampler that were all supposed to be 12 1/2” except that only three are 😵💫 The only good thing is I don’t have to be concerned about loosing any points when I trim them down to 12”. I’ve learned a lot in the last five years and can definitely see that the blocks I make now are so much closer to being accurate. Thank you again for the tips.
This was very good information for a beginner! Could you please follow it up with a session on using a block lock trimmer and a clearly perfect slotted trimmer. Tell what situation to use each one, and what good are the little slots on the trimmer for?
Hey, Natalie! I love the squaring-up process! It’s my favourite part of quilting! I’m confident doing this-and I’ve watched this video before-but it popped up in my thread. Couldn’t resist watching it again. I really enjoy your videos. So glad that we still get to see your creative input on the Triple Play videos! Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
Natalie I absolutely love all of your tutorials! Thank you so very much for taking the time to do so for all of us.❤ I am curious to know if you have a very favorite sewing machine that you love the most?
I needed this right now as I’m squaring up blocks from a cake mix recipe quilt…..blocks measured from 15.75 to 16.25! Guess I stretched with the ironing or cut messed up. Thank you so much! And thank you for this series! Love all your help!!!!
Hi Natalie! Thanks for the tip of adding the disable interface to squares that have thin edges when squaring them. I never thought if that. You’re awesome!
I hope you will in the future show us how to square up a quilt .... I have one that is out of square and am not sure how to get it back into square. Looking forward to more Q 101 videos they are great ... Be sure to put them in a playlist to make them easier to find
Great videos! I wish other quilters would learn to sew and then press seams as they go along and then finally at the end of a block. Sometimes that helps with slightly wonky blocks with just a little trimming. I do like my blocks to look good on both sides.
Hi friend! Your video was exactly what I needed! I would have appreciated more of a overhead view for every single thing you did however! As a novice I really need to actually "see." I'm sure I will get there ,thanks again!
That block looks like most of my blocks! I worry about seams popping more than I worry about losing points. Sometimes I do a little zigzag stitch on those short sided edges and that has helped. I discovered part of my problem was that I was using steam to press the sewn pieces, and they were shrinking or stretching out of shape. I stopped that, lol.
I am making my first ever quilt. It is a big block quilt made from HST. What size ruler would I need to square up my blocks to 12.5 inches? Total newbie here.
Hello! I enjoy yours videos. I was so surprised that you did not demonstrate this for left handed beginners. I know you stated obviously lefthand people should turn the ruler the other way, but what's the other way? Thanks again
@@Pip7-px3wq Thanks. I did not see her cut on the left side. I was hoping since Jenny was lefthanded that she was going to show how to use both hands. I did find a quilter that helped me.
Please close your blade. I would hate for someone to get cut by not realizing how dangerous it is not to close blade when not in use. I love your teaching style. Thank you.
I need help! lol. I have a 4X4 square that I snowballed one corner to make a diamond in a square black. I need to square it up but have to keep the diamond in the center. FOR NOW I am just taking a sliver off of each side to make it 11 3/4" but I would like to cut it to 11 1/2 so it ends up 11" finished instead of 11 1/4. I hope that made sense lol.
Wouldn't you know, The first time in forever I didn't immediately close the cutter. I just touched it with my knuckle and, oops, a cut! But I turned it into a positive. It was at our church quilt group and I'd been stressing to the beginners about closing the cutters. I got the chance to tell them about rule #2 of quilting: Don't bleed on the fabric!
I have decided that ‘squaring’ my blocks will be the next thing I attempt towards better blocks. As Is often said, “finished is better….”! Happy sewing 🧵.

When you are squaring your blocks do you press the block first? Thank you for your video.
I love this video - Would you please demonstrate the MSQC Drunkards Path Templates and how to use them ???

Cut on the left side instead of the right like Natalie did 🙂

It does, I think you have it figured out!
How do you square a rectangle?
It's hip to be square!
❤❤❤
I want to know why my rotary cutter doesn't cut the way yours does? It seems like yours cuts like butter my cuts like a popsicle stick
A new blade cuts like butter 😊
@@MissouriQuiltCo I tend to use mine far to long
My blocks are never the same size and never ever flat
Great tips. Just one suggestion: please close your rotary cutter after each cut and set a good example for beginners!
Wouldn't you know, The first time in forever I didn't immediately close the cutter. I just touched it with my knuckle and, oops, a cut! But I turned it into a positive. Not the best explanation. She doesn't seem to have the required vocabulary to explain what she's doing.
I have decided that ‘squaring’ my blocks will be the next thing I attempt towards better blocks. As Is often said, “finished is better….”! Happy sewing 🧵.
👍 It does make a difference...Have fun quilting!
Some quilters use a muslin material as a pattern to make sure your square is correct? How is that done. Show me please.
