I was a programmer on this game. We experimented with a few controls until settling on this one. I always thought it was pretty cool. The publisher sure did, so we left it in. This was back when you could experiment and be creative.
This is why I like going back to that era of video games. You find such off the wall creative ideas and I absolutely love that. I’d like to see more games flesh out this combat system.
That's so cool that you worked on it. This game is my av Xbox game of all time. I loved its dark atmosphere and music. The asylum was so hard, but it was my fav part of the game. The doctors and nurses were my fav enemies, haha
@@ryanc5572 Thanks that's so awesome to hear you enjoyed it! For a long time, all I could see when I saw this game is the stress and the many late nights that went into making this. So it's nice to hear it was worth it in the end :)
@@ryanc5572 Hmm let me think. The game was made in office above a paint shop in Guildford, on an industrial estate; there was an office dog called Boots, who belonged to one of the games testers; the last few months of development were super intense, 100-hour workweeks were not unheard of; one of the coders would sometimes play the Sound of Music on his speakers to help create a vibe; and this game would never have been finished had it not been for many office-wide after-work Quake 3 sessions :)
The fact the game has the UV bomb & it works properly is so underrated. I still randomly play this with friends, going back to the night club area & clearing out the room is so satisfying, glad you covered it! This is a lot like the Predator PS2 game that got nuked by reviews but had a lot of fun mechanics
I loved Blade since I was 5 years old and I’ll never forget September 1st 2003 when my mom walked in and handed me this game for my 9th birthday. I almost cried cause I never knew Blade had a video game lol. When the summer came, I played it day and night. I have so many good memories with this game, like when I got cheat codes and ran through this game like a god until I got to that level with the giant rat that chases you and I got so scared when I saw it, I immediately went back to level select. Or when I let my sister play and during the escort mission with Whistler and she was going crazy with the shotgun and blew Whistler up 😭 Sorry for the long ass comment but I’m glad to see people appreciate this game. And I loved your review for the Blade PS1 game. I didn’t know that existed till a couple years ago. I got a PS1 for 10 bucks at a flea market and beat that game in like 2 days. Thanks for the nostalgia. Keep up the good work, I’m definitely subscribing. 🙌🏾
I remeber Jet Li: Rise to Honor for PS2 had the same combat system, also in that game, they did exactly what you mentioned in the video, cool fights against other martial artists
The analog attacking control scheme was used in a 360 game called “Too human”. I don’t think it came out before this game but I loved that control scheme. Also, my favorite condiment is duck sauce.
The Batman Arkham games prove you can do the "graceful dance" without needing to rely on a stick that's classically taken for a camera/movement button. Too Human's attempt was too jarring for me to even pass the first level. Doubt I would've done any better with this one, had I known it existed at the time. I'd have liked to see an RPG where you can pick the power he has you want to upgrade, which would allow for different playstyles. Speed, stealth could utilize hunting senses. Healing factor for pure tanks. Raw physical power for random brawler/one man army. Stuff like that. Also wouldn't have minded if they broke from the canon ending and paired the Princess with Blade, as a possible end. So long as she wasn't renamed Peach. He's a vampire hunter, not a plumber, and she wasn't the type to cry out "Blade, come save my A**." Though you might get shades of Castlevania if the message was "Sorry, your vampiress is in another stronghold bro."
@@DiegoReviews Was just for a second or two but it managed to get published like that hahaha ! I bet devs were laughing that this was never caught during final control XD.
I'm currently going through a nostalgia trip and looking through games of this era that I used to play a ton. Blade 2 included, games during this era really tried to experiment with different game mechanics and do fresh stuff because there wasn't that much established industry methods- which I love. I noticed too that us gamer weren't fully used to game mechanics that are considered self explanatory today and it required an upfront tutorial level 😂.
I don't remember much, but I do remember some levels being so lazily designed that they were purely symmetrical. There was an office area that even had soda machines in the exact same spot on each side.
I had no problems with this game other than when I played it as a kid not knowing how to play. But now it's pretty easy to me. Also, Rise to Honor used a 360 fighting style too.
Thanks for giving a positive review on this game. I remembered it so many years later, and RUclipsd it, and a bunch of diss videos came up , and it was kinda annoying to be honest, and ruined the nostalgia I was aiming for, yeah it’s not bad for the times
Good retrospective, massive hit of nostalgia watching this as I remember playing this when I was a kid! From what I remember, the escort missions were a drag and the game sort of just "ended" after the last boss which was a bit odd. Definitely on my list of PS2 games that will be going on my Steam Deck!
i talked this game to my friend a couple nights ago talking about how unique and hard the combat was as a kid so i wanted to replay it and the youtube gods bless me with this. the music and the parking lot fights were so memorable. earned a sub👌🏼
I never got a chance to play Blade 2 but the free flow combat here was clearly ahead of its time and influenced Batman which till this day is one of my favorite games series to play
I also really love the PS2 era for the same reason. So much creativity, so much experimentation. And HP is my favourite condiment. Unfortunately it would have cost me $90 to send you some!
I played a bit of this game not too long ago and I admit I didn't give it a fair shake. I agree that the parking garage level sets a really poor first impression and I didn't stick with it for much longer. Also, hot sauce.

watching this vid made me remember when i had jet li's rise to honor for the ps2 which had the same analog stick combat control and to be greatly honest. its sorta of a unique scheme in itself. you kinda do feel that wild roam of combat flicking the stick in any direction needed to be flicked at

"Blade II" has the feel of a Sony game. It blends the shooting of "Syphon Filter" with the fighting of "Rise to Honor". It wasn't the best, but not awful either. Kind of fun. I would rate it with a 6.4 out of 10.

Almost done with this game, never played it before but the combat honestly feels good after like an hour of practice. I enjoyed the ps1 Blade game and the sequel is enjoyable too.
