What she says about depression vs being sad is so true, I was in a situation a few years ago where one of my parent's died, i had no friends living anywhere near me, i was eating bad, i wasn't exercising, i was in the worst shape of my life, i was in a terrible work situation, and when i went to a therapist i got diagnosed with depression and i believed it and i was put on anti depressants. Knowing what i know now and looking back i was not clinically depressed, i was sad because my life was shit. The thing standing between me and happiness was NOT medical treatment, it was making my life better. therapy and anti depressants was nothing but a shitty band aid, what actually made my life better was making friends, exercising, eating right, getting a better job, etc.
If you're in a shitty situation and you think you're depressed there's a pretty good chance that you're actually just very sad because of your shitty situation. Real depression is a medical problem and requires medical treatment, being very sad because your life is shitty is a problem with your life and requires making your life better.
I tend to believe most people nowadays who think they're depressed are in the same situation i was in.
Main takeaway from this - if things in your life getting better would make you happy then you're not depressed, you're just sad, you don't need medical treatment, you need to make your life better.

@@Methose the correct answer to that in my opinion is because that only treats the symptom, not the problem, and if you ignore the problem and only treat the symptoms then the problem will get worse. if you’re not actually clinically depressed then medical treatment is nothing more than a shitty band aid. the easy way is almost never the right way. taking a pill is easy. making friends, exercising, eating right, that’s hard.

    • @Seamannon
      @Seamannon 17 часов назад

@@Methose The pill doesn't even make you happy though, it just numbs you out, so you don't experience your suffering as intensily as you would naturally and as you should in order to motivate yourself enough to change your life, but you also can't access your joy for the same reason.
Taking pills doesn't solve any of the underlying issues, it doesn't make your life better, it doesn't motivate you to to do all of the things you need to do to improve your life, it doesn't help you access your emotions and self-reflect and it doesn't make you even happy, it just keeps you in place and it prolongs your problems by helping you cope with crappy circumstances instead of changing them. Prolonged problems usually just get worse and blow up eventually, leaving you worse off than you would be if you addressed issues sooner.
Avoiding the inevitable is not help.
If you suffer at work, you have to put your energy into getting a better job, not draining yourself by tolerating things you can't stand for until you burn out and have no hope for better employment.
If you're in a toxic relationship, you have to resolve the issues or leave the relationship, not tolerate abuse and attribute it to mental illness and allow your partner to absolve themself of any responsibility by conveniently blaming things on your diagnosis too, so that no issue is ever resolved and people eventually hate eachother or become completely indifferent to eachother.
If someone you loved dies, you have to let yourself grieve the loss completely and learn to continue your life despite that loss, you don't distract yourself from the pain and you don't hinder yourself from experiencing the pain, because then you can't actually accept the situation and transform yourself to allow other meaningfull experiences into your life.
If you have no friends, you don't take pills and think that people will magically appear in your life without any effort on your side, you figure out what kind of people you want to be friends with and what kind of people you need to avoid in your life and you have to figure out if there's something that repells other people from connecting with you or if there's something in you that attracts people that you don't want to connect with and once you have those answers, you have to make a plan and take specific steps to interact with people in specific ways.
If you're in bad shape, you don't take a pill, you have to attend to your health in all the ways that were neglected. Our bodies are complex systems, no issue can be broken down to some tiny element that's resolved by one pill or cutting off some tiny part of your body that makes seems to make the most trouble. It rarely works like that, simple operations work best for sudden injuries, but even then you'll have to follow a recovery plan afterwards that would propably still be a lifestyle change. Chronic illness requires very big lifestyle changes every time. You can start you lifestyle changes while you have enough energy and control over your body, or you take your daily pill and wait for things to break down in a way that you can't control anymore and you have to tolerate other people controlling every aspect of your life.

1:41:00 - yup. The not needing someone but wanting a partner was where I was at and wanted to be at before dating. That, and super sensitive to weird-vibes kept me from dating until college. Wasnt worried about money- had worked all through HS and had a good savings built up. Definitely helped me be less nervous of the future and unsure of myself. I knew I could work. If I didnt have that confidence idk if that would've changed when/who I got married to, but wouldve felt more stress for sure.

Being depressed for some people I know is like not being able to get out of bed/get off the couch/getting exhausted doing a simple task requiring some sort of effort!
I do agree that if you have a problem = YOU have to figure it out with the help and NOT DEPENDANCE on a provider who's got a TON of their own problems - but that's a different conversation for another time!

I was having cognitive issues at my toxic government job. The administration at work wanted me to determine the cause and then report the qualifying conditions for their assessment. I could not do that because my conditions were real. Had they been fraudulent I would have had the capacity to use the cognition I had, but claimed I did not. I ended up taking a "voluntary" demotion that did not affect my retirement pension and retiring eight years later receiving lower wages in the meantime. There were other employees whose performance was not monitored closely due to a preferred status. Our country deserves better than a government that is itself a social welfare program.

Counter-intuitive to lose weight on antidepressants, and I was also eating more and exercising less, trying to overcome a spiral of illnesses.

I am going to try to do meat only and see what happens. Thank you Mikayla for speaking out on autoimmune diseases. Our doctors and community NEED to listen. Antidepressant withdrawal is real and pretty bad but I guess the length differs. When I went off of 6 year SSRI use, I experienced the horrible symptoms for about 4 months. Did the antidepressants help? Not really. Fixing my shitty life made me better (I couldn't afford any therapy).

  • @alexanderprivate7233

Disclaimer: in zero sense of professionalism am I educated on medication.
When I got of anti depressence I had zero withdrawal, however I got of them whiting a month. They killed my emotional household to a point where it had the opposite effect. I felt nothing therefore I did not want to live.
Afterwards I worked with a professional to get trough a trauma and that ended up giving me the capacity to naturally fight off depression and gave me the me tal knowledge and capacity to identify and counter the signs of a new depressive wave. Been doing okay since.
Moral of the story: listen to your body, question everything with a pro and don't be afraid to switch caretakers if things don't work out

Hi Optometrist here. I am able to prescribe certain medications. I have reps come in and they are able to sponsor meals but that’s about it. I do not get “paid” to prescribe a certain medication. It’s very regulated. There’s actually a website where you can look up how much each doctor has received from reps and how it compares to national average. I’m not sacrificing my career to prescribe a specific medication for boxed sandwich and chips 😂.
