Burning, Maplewood Avenue, and Polarity get almost daily rotation for me. I came to your music late (I'm 65) but I absolutely love it. Thanks for making it.
I've liked "Them Changes" since I was about 13 yrs. old (now 62). Hendix and the Band of Gypsies did it on their album, and it's killer! "Polarity" is so good, the playing on "How long..." is so lush and sensitive, really a nice touch by two masters.
Jimmy, you are a great teacher. I learn something new with your videos. Can you do a demo or a lesson on jazz blues, the Jimmy Bruno way? You may already have one...BTW youve become part of my routine now, I look forward to your videos.🙂
Thank you for doing these videos, Jimmy. Being a rock guitar player, but with a love of jazz and blues as a drummer, i do all i can to infuse my writing and playing with with information from masters like you. I love the way you just lay it out there, man, both your teachings and your opinions.
"Polarity". What a record. I first heard it on KUVO out of Denver..the late great Bob Parlocha played "Emily" one night late on his syndicated show..I didn't even know the album had been done..called my dad and told him about it,he said "yeah jase! I got it last month when it was released!"..always ahead of me.
You're still over my head mostly with the musical language..bridge.... I, IV, V... turnaround. But I might be able to kind of keep up with you on a very simple song. I've been trying to play for about 45 years. I amuse myself mostly
How did I not know about Polarity until today? It’s been playing non-stop on my back porch all day. An example of two masters collaborating rather than having a pissing contest. Truly a tasteful recording. This album should be celebrated more widely.
what i like about Jimmy is the way he analyze and put it in simple terms for idiots like me to understand, its like he dig what problem I get in learning, and comes with the right answer, the right explanation , Jimmy is right all the way 🍻 🙏
Yeah, had that record too!!! Thanks for another memory! Hurricane Katrina took out a thousand albums and a whole studio where my home "used to be". (That became a common expression around the Gulf coast.) Been retrieving treasures ever since, wherever I can.
Had that recording (Trane, Trane, Trane). Trying to learn all things from it, that was maybe the most important thing, miss my memories...thank you. Watch out. I might start texting to "Soul Brother".
What a gift..that Satin Doll lesson. We like to use the phrase My Pleather Doll, for no particular reason. Funny how you went from jazz snob at the beginning to stench mouth at the end. I took a pic of the grammy jazz winners (no way can I watch these shows) in my newspaper today to look them up. And anyone who wins a top pop award, I'll at least look them up on youtube to see if something is there...either in their voice, or the producer's chops. But I hear the horror in the cafe's I frequent. Autotune songs that sound like they're for little kids. Like post Disney kids now 14, so here ya go. They're doing calisthenics instead of real singing. Depressing when you start thinking...well, I don't have that much time left..I won't have to suffer long. It just ain't our party anymore. But who in pop now is the real deal? Or rather, who is the real deal who isn't a jazz singer? Joanna Newson's Milk Eyed Mender showed genius. Tom Waits should be up there on Mount Rushmore, along with Abby Lincoln and Oscar Levant and Jonathan Winters. David Sylvian is a true artist. A real poet and a producing genius. So, Jimmy, were you a fan of Jerry Reed's guitar playing?
Thanks. I saw you with Joe Beck during the time of that album at JJ’s Grotto. Awesome stuff and some of the other guys who used to sit in with you there and at Chris’ were amazing.Great to have a new site, but wanted to ask if you will have all those videos you already recorded available along with new stuff. ?
I am in your online school, I have played for around 40 years but have never received lessons, and I like the sound of barring across all the strings to make what I think is a minor 11 of the note on the last string, and also just the 6th, 4th, 2nd or 1st, 3rd, 5th string to make 2 other minor chords, I land on these because to me they sound good and are very easy to play, also barring with the first two and last two strings up 1 fret, but other guitar players I know dislike these sounds. Am I wrong? Are these unpleasant like nails on a caulk board? I have been doing it so long perhaps I am used to it?
Nobody has the answer for you! Listen to yourself playing those chords: do you like the sound? If you do, great, but also what are some other chords that have a different feeling to them? If you don’t, why don’t you try finding something else? Most peoples biggest hindrance in being self -taught is a reluctant, unclear, sense of taste.
Mr. Bruno what do you think about Joe Beck playing with the flamenco guitar player Sabicas and if you will do same, play with another guitar player that is not jazz?
I don't even know what the term jazz means..If it is Joe playing, I would love it. don't have much time these days to check out many guitarists. Working on a new cd and performing in NY
Jimmy what's this thing with "Borrowed Chords" ? I saw this chart some guy put up with 48 chords for one key. Why not just say it works 'cause it works. I can see with majors and minors but man this guy gave me a headache. LOL
Borrowed chords are chords from a different key/mode that sound "good" because they hold common tones with the key/mode being used but introduce new tones as well. Recently a lot of instructors have tried to argue that memorizing all of these substitutions is the best way to use them but that's just a little ridiculous. Be familiar with the alterations of the chords and tones if you were to change a vi chord to a bVI or something else of that nature. Really you should follow your ear and introduce what you think will sound good and follow ot with something that makes this new chord/mode sound like it was supposed to be there. You'll end up with much better results than you would if you memorized every possible substitution.
Amazing agile fingers for an ole geezer - hah,hah - love your style but gosh visit a luthier to have your guitar set up better .....the constant buzzing is too distracting !
Be able to play it to be qualified to criticise it? What? That just about epitomises everything that’s so hatefully snobbish about jazz. That’s like saying you have to be able to paint like Leonardo da Vinci before you can be an art critic. You were very quick to dismiss George Clooney as having “no talent”. Can you act? No. So what qualifies you to criticise him? All of you - try to acknowledge and respect music and guitar art forms other than jazz and just maybe more people than your closed, elite community will start to listen to and appreciate jazz.
Nah, man. I disagree. I think you need to take a hard look at the context. He's talking to musicians. I get what he is saying, because there are too many musicians who are dismissive of anything that is not in their own "wheelhouse". He is not saying you have to be the world's greatest master of a genre before you can criticize it. But, if you are a *musician*, you shouldn't really rag on a particular kind of music until you at least have explored it. Also, in all my years as a musician I honestly have never once gotten the idea that the jazz community was "hatefully snobbish". Just the opposite. Come sit in with us. Trade some fours... You'll dig it. man.
I think there has to be some understanding of the form before one can criticize it. You don't have to be Leonardo da Vinici, but you must have a basic foundation of knowledge before you can tell him his painting sucks. Otherwise, he can dismiss you just as easily.
My take is that the standards often are the lessons themselves. Within them is all the information you could need to understand them.
Great video jimmy . Yes Satin doll one of my all-time favourite, thanks
Merci 🎸🎼pour la France 🇨🇵 mon Pote 👍🏽
Thee most inspirational videos on You Tube, thank you Jimmy for keeping it real.

Youre my favorite jazz guitarist, right after jimmy page. Love the grips
"You got to watch not to up-hip yourself" Brilliant!!
Out-hip.
Thanks Jimmy, you insights are invaluable. Capturing the moment is concept that is undervalued these days.

I'm listening to Polarity a lot these days. It's what I call a "cornerstone" record already. Thanks for the music, man!

I was just kidding about Eric Johnson! I am a fan! 😁
That was Monk calling "Coltrane Coltrane" on "Well You Needn't" off the "Monk's Music" Album on Riverside (1957).
I always loved your playing Jimmy....
Jimmy, you’re awesome brother!! Wish I could play like you.
Jimmy! I know that you are THE MAN! A Legend of Legends. But, yes, I can for SHORE pick a fiddle, too. (Please be gentle 🤣)

@@IsaacSmelcZhan have you ever heard uncle bird dog play?😁
Love this guy!!

Thank you from Paris Mister Hank Garland ! I listened so many times your « Jazz in new directions » when I was young !
Thanks for your insights, Jimmy.
You've just turned me on to Jazz. I never liked it up till now, thanks Jimmy. cheers
Right on, Jimmy. Beautiful.
Tika ti-tow .. love it !😎
You're showinf exactly what I need here,,,tyvm JB

Jimmy, I did not come from a family of musicians, and I am self-taught so I deserve some mercy🤣
Monk also shouts "Coltrane, Coltrane!" on the version of Well You Needn't on Monk's Music, talk about being in the moment
Yeah, had that record too!!! Thanks for another memory! Hurricane Katrina took out a thousand albums and a whole studio where my home "used to be". (That became a common expression around the Gulf coast.) Been retrieving treasures ever since, wherever I can.
I really enjoy Maplewood Ave. To me, that album has such a timeless sound that it could have been recorded in the late 50's.
Thank you... that what I was shooting for
My favorite Charlie Christian is that live album. Funny room acoustics, but the presence is mighty.
Burnin is a Great Jimmy Bruno cd. A good place to start if you are new to J.B.
My Favorite....POLARITY....Awesome.
My friend Charlie Karp played on THEM CHANGES with Buddy Miles. He was great and only 17 at that time.
Had that recording (Trane, Trane, Trane). Trying to learn all things from it, that was maybe the most important thing, miss my memories...thank you. Watch out. I might start texting to "Soul Brother".
Here in Germany we have the Jazz police. Another term for jazz snob.
I like that.."the jazz police" My sorry country needs them too
Or in general "Musiker-Polizei". Therefore I close my eyes while playing most of the time to keep focussed.
We call any snob a cork sniffer.
"The stench of their talent"??? Take it back. Take it back!
How can you put it down if you can't hear it? Amazing!!!
Called an Ear Snob?

Don;'t know Jerry Reeds music.. Also agree with you 100% about the other things. "My Pleather Doll"
Sweet and Swinging!
Jimmy, can you do a video on *advanced* ear training? What are some exercises you like to do for yourself?
Jimmy! This came up in my feed. I ain't been keeping up. Great lesson as usual. You okay up there? - AC Andy
Jazz is tough. I can play it when I'm on my game, but, yeah, not at your level but good.
I had my band play them changes then next up,"Moontrane"
I love all music Ragtime, Jazz, Bebop, R&B, Rock, Techno, New Wave, Soul, Funk, House. Except Country they can have that shit
If you can’t smoke a cigarette AND play it at the same time....you shouldn’t criticize it. (Just impressed by this)
Wow. Y'alright.
👍🏻 dude
Ever play with Joe Pass or Barney Kessel? Those guys are my favorite
我在北京的blue note特地去看过你的表演
Love you jimmy I wish there more people like you keeping it real keeping it fun. I cant stand those icy freeze mormon jazz assholes

Great Lesson Jimmy..My question is :How do learn a lot of Jazz tunes quickly? You know a Gang OF tunes...How do you learn them
No easy way to do that
Indeed lol!!!
Simplify the changes to fives and ones and you'll realize they're all the same

How about something simple but beautiful. Still corners "trip". What can you make from that...
Hey Jimmy, simple question: what are you listening to lately?
Thanks a million have a nice day

Not a guitarist but enjoyed the video. Glad I stopped by.
