- Here is an easy step by step guide on how to open your PS4 controller to clean and to fix the drifting issue that a lot of people are experiencing.
Why does the ps4 controller have the drifting problem?
Because you're dirty. We all eat while playing games, so the food and grease gets onto the controller, then slowly drips down into the thumb stick causing it to have problems like drifting.
Will this damage the ps4 controller?
If you follow my instructions EXACTLY, then you shouldn't have any issues. I have taken my controller apart multiple times and have not had any issues. BUT I will have to put out a warning that you might ruin your controller if you are careless with it. So be gentle, watch my video multiple times, and follow the instructions :)

Sounds like you got a repackaged controller. Most places don't bother testing or fixing them up. They just clean it, repackage, and resell it. If I were you, I'd return it and ask for a refund.

I have taken apart hundreds of controllers, the hardest part is remembering where the stuff goes which is very simple to work around. Also learning how to maintain them will prolong the life of the controller dramatically
I’ve had horrible drift the last month, not just subtle drifting but so bad that my movements in game were jittery without even touching the sticks. After trying every noninvasive solution in the books I found your video and completely took apart my controller and deep cleaned as you showed. My controller is FIXED! Low key it helped a lot, after I put my controller back together it drifted but not as much, but than stopped drifting for a while, no drifting lately

update....I did this with my battle beaver yesterday and it absolutely worked...although there is a couple of other wires for the rear buttons but everything else was the same...thanks for making this video
Why is this still an issue 8 years after the PS4 was launched? If it had been a car drifting to the right it would have been recalled immediately and fixed! So much for Japanese inscrutability!
Well, dust and lint, or grease end up there somehow. You try making a waterproof controller or a tight sealed working controller.
To add to this, most Japanese products allow their products to be opened. Opening a Ps4 is easy, compared to other consoles. This means that they try to help the consumer better get inside their products, allowing them to fix it or upgrade it, but because of that, it might be easier for lint and dust to get into it. And its not like Xbox controllers, or Nintendo controllers don’t have this problem either.
Did you even see the difficulty of opening a xbox one controller lol…. So many screws
@@WorstSpieler all the controllers that gen are pretty comparable to disassemble. Xbox One has the fiddly shoulder button, PS4 has fragile ribbon cables, and both use plastic clips that aren't great to pry apart. Joy cons are pretty easy to fix but their parts are tiny and fiddly. The last great controller from a disassembly and ease of repair standpoint was the Wii U pro controller. Just screws, no prying, and its parts slot together easily and obviously in the right places. If only they were all designed that way.

Thanks my wife got a brand new controller for Black Friday and it started drifting a couple weeks ago.
The Green and White controller is a serious pisstake to open up, it’s like the company that Sony uses to manufacture the controllers have made everything tighter and harder to open compared to the usual v1 and v2 controllers. It took ages but eventually I was able to pry it open and get to the analog stage, unfortunately I was unable to open the clips to access the white stuff even with your method of using a flat bit screwdriver.
Fortunately blowing air into the crevices and cleaning the internals with a microfiber cloth has made an improvement to the controller analog when testing. Hopefully the analog lasts a long time and it restores my confidence in using the controller for general play. I didn’t have any IPA or compressed air at the time so if I encounter any drift it should be an easy fix, now the screw and unit threshold has been breached. Thanks for the video.
Mine literally moves to the left like every 7 seconds but it moves me hard like I'm trying to shoot and takes me to the left

@@Daniel-ym4wo i think the problem is that dried grease. i re-applied grease on mine and it works. no need to pry those green thing. i just took the knobs of and put a little amount of grease. if you shine a light on it you’ll see where to put grease.

The right stick starts drifting to the left again. But only when i slightly, like just a very gentle touch, move the right stick to the left, like. When i move the right stick hard to the left, it doesn`t drift after i release the stick. That`s weird. I tried moving it in all directions, slightly and hard, i still only have problems with the left side.
I will leave it as it is for now, and try repairing my second controller.

I was able to complete the process & my controller seems to be working just fine & doesn't have stick drift anymore.
I will say my controller was completely clean inside, almost like new. So I'm not so sure if cleaning solved the issue, maybe it could be the simple fact of repositioning the small white pieces inside the stick module.

i tested your way and it worked fine with me , i just freaked from the tiny small parts in it , ithought it will cost me a new controler . do u have other method for the same problem for the optical wirless mouse , mine keep moving alone in squares .

Hello , please can u help? I had light drift, i pulled off the discs, but i think i bended one a bit and now when i move down the stick morethen half, it starts to move up. Same happens when i click the r3..

Playing on steam my controller drifts when I am not in the game (alt+tab) mouse goes upper right corner direction and it's so annoying. When in game everything is fine. Any solution for that?

@@davechristopher6462 no Its not hard just don't be heavy handed as the parts are delicate but the parts are relatively easy to remove. Plumbing is way beyond me so I'm sure you're fine

mine has horrible drift it started spinning left on cod but now it switched to right so I'm not sure if it's the white pads I need to change
i accidentally ripped the black wire near the metal rings and analog did this have major affect?

If it's the vibrators and you really don't care about the vibration on ur controller than no it didn't effect anything. If you do want to get ur vibration back though you would either have to buy a new controller or you and/or someone who knows how to use a sodering iron

Too bad I can't remove two screws because both are rusted and the cross shape is gone on both, I just have a noshape hole on both screws...

Buy 2 small screwdrivers and crazy glue to the screws and turn it .
You'll lose the screwdrivers but the screws will be out

Lol that drift is nothing, Mine freaking moves up and DS4Windows shows that it is vibrating and in-game settings show the drift to be 70% of the controller

@@catfood2 Yo mahn, This reply was 4 months back and currently my stick drift is gone, hw I fixed it?, if u searched for the solution for 10 hr (like I did before), u ll have seen to disassemble the controller and clean it, ik u r prolly scared of doing it but I had no choice and almost went to buy a new one when I tought to give it a shot, And guess what it got FIXED!!, if u r gonna try the same I recommend going slow and watching the steps again n again, HOPE THIS HELPS!!

The two dots close to each other should be facing down, the three dots should be facing up.

I have the drift issue which keeps on going up on the stick which doesn't help with aiming on FPS etc so I'm gonna try this later today and will update on the fix 😬
Im gonna try this on my old controllers first that has extreme stick drift .So if I break something while trying to open it then it won't be much of a loss to me compared to my new controller that's not evens 3 months old and already it has stick drift

Thanks after seeing this there was no stopping me and all is good now controller was becoming unusable, had a moment with the spring in the trigger though.
If wanting to have more space to open the boxes look at the back of the controller there this things in the back which hold the board

Naw I think they doing that s*** in a update. I had a brand new controller in a box for almost a year never opened. I opened it about a month ago then after the last update it and all of the rest of my controllers started to drift. It seems like Sony pulling a apple right now🤨. All around the PS5 release
Man my right stick drifts up bad, and I’ve taken it apart and used compressed air and it still does it bad, any recommendations?
Let me know if you find a solution, I have not taken it apart but have tried compressed air, blowing etc. from all angles and turning the sticks and pressing them etc. still the left sticks keep going «up» in my games
Only full proof solution is to solder in a new joystick to replace the previous one that has the stick drift.

Hello, I tried this and my drift is even worse. Should I give it another go again?
If it’s worse then u really need to scrub down the inside of those green boxes. Scrub it hard with a qtip. Soak the white discs in alcohol to get them really clean. Also switch around the white discs. For example, the white discs that were on the left thumb stick, now put those on the right...also make sure u put those discs back in right. There’s two white dots on them, have those pointing downwards.

I don’t have the right screwdriver to take apart my controller, so that’s not an option, i’d rather get a whole new controller for $64.99 at walmart.
but i found a fix in the settings of my game which is the left stick max input settings, lowering the value and it fixed the drifting.

I've taken my ps4 controller apart many times, never once have I used anything more then a screw driver to crack the upper and lower shells apart lol
I play The Last Of Us Part 2 every day and for sone reason lately the game would drift. At first I thought it was controller related so i went and got a new controller. Tried the game today and it’s still drifting. So I’m more sure than not that it’s definitely the game thats the issue and not my controller. All my other games don’t drift.

jesus, that's a lot of work to fix drift.
Step one: this is a luck based situation and your controller either has no drift or has extreme drift. For example mine had extreme drift and nothing can fix it because PlayStation wants to be ass.
Step 2: throw your controller at the wall but make sure your analog stick faces the wall
Step 3: be sure your controller analog doesn’t annoy you by making sure it’s broken.
Step 4: beg your parents for a new controller and repeat the same process if this happens again.

Most likely the Ribbon Cable of the bottom Shell is plugged in the wrong Way (rotated 180°), take a close Look at the Socket and the Cable..

Do NOT remove the small gold plates in the stick housing, you will not be able to put them back in properly, this guy's camera didn't even focus on the details.
