Smoke: "I think maybe it was a more popular song, maybe I heard it on the radio..." Hollywood: "Maybe...OR...you know how we could've had PAST LIVES?" I love you guys
I believe this song, like much of TOOL’s discography, has both a surface meaning as well as one that resonates with all of our baseline consciousness. Your talk about past lives is spot on because even if you’ve never heard this song before, the music and the message feel familiar to you. People have said before that the individual chunks of this song are simple enough to play on their own, but the arrangement of timing makes this an incredibly complex song. Much like everyone’s simple life, we all fit together intricately to build a new entity together: Humanity itself. Humans are said to have fallen in the garden of Eden, but before that mankind was in harmony with our creator. This song illustrates Humanity’s yearning for the divine. When communication with the Divine is restored, we lose our individual selfish boundaries and, in turn, begin to communicate with our fellow men. Great video guys, I know I’m late to the party with my comment but TOOL compels me to try to reach out and share my thoughts with others. I hope you both are communicating with the Divine, and are at peace because of it!
*“I know the pieces fit cause I watched them fall away”* is such a beautifully tragic but uplifting thought at the the same time. Tool is not about hating of feeling hate. Went and saw TOOL in 2016 VIP and during a Q&A a guy was telling a story in front of me about how the band changed him and Adam Jones came in and sat on my lap to hear the guys story before surprising him that he was right behind him. One of the greatest days of my life. Met the entire band except Maynard (of course). 😍🤩😁
First and only song I know of that actually got AirPlay. Want to hear something really hard? Listen to opiate. It’s about religion, and rocks harder than their later shit. Maynard is actually in 2 other bands, A Perfect Citcle, and Pussifer.
Been tripping on tool since I was 12 years old, now I'm 35 being amused watching you guys be mind blown. Would love to see you react to the official video for Kaitangata by Alien Weaponry. Chur chur from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Break-up song...I know it's more complex than that but it's what I feel the lyrics are about. Currently going through this right now, and every part of our dysfunction feels like this song. Gives me such peace to release my emotions into this song. Communication is fucking KEY.. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion, between supposed lovers" Absolute truth..gives me goosebumps every time.
Another sick reaction guys, awesome stuff!!! I 100% agree with you guys on how closing your eyes is far better than watching the video! The videos are great too but I think it’s better to create your own visuals with this band. Another Toolsday in the books 😎
When I hear the word schism, I think about a sudden, jarring break - a dividing line down the center, like a canyon formed by tectonic upheaval rather than the gradual carving of a riverbed.
I think you guys should do the Disposition, Reflection and Traid all together. You cannot do those separately. So I think you guys have got to do those together. It’s an otherworldly experience.
I wrote this on the songs video page about the visuals: “To many viewers the video purely abstract, but I see it as quite relevant to the message. The whole concept of the song is about COMMUNICATION and how the pitfalls of it breaking down can tear apart relationships (Miscommunication=Schism). Starts out with the creature's feet sinking in the ground below them, and appearing somewhere else upside down like "wormhole quicksand"; as if, your foundation has disappeared and your center of gravity is completely off. Then one of the creatures is seen attempting to almost "write" using the other creatures head as their pen/pencil (as if they were imposing their views on the other). It gets so bad that we go into the EAR (the listening tool) and inside the blood of the creature we see small "cancer-like" creatures. They come out into the real world (inner fear manifesting outward) and torment their previous hosts with their BIG MOUTHS (speaking tool) biting, clinging, as if "if we can't figure out how to communicate properly, its gonna come back to bite us". Then it all ends with the nightmarish shot of the 2 creatures blended into 1, as if maybe that's what it looks like when communication really fails and people become co-dependent and cant get out of it (unlike when the pieces really FIT) OR maybe they figured it out and are finally meshing well and becoming one. Could go either way. ....just my surreal interpretation. Do with it what you will. I LOVE all of their videos, LOTS to chew, digest and communicate about.” ... PS : Their videos r directed by their guitarist Adam Jones who used to work on special FX sculpting for the art department on movies like Jurassic Park, nightmare on Elm st, T2, Predator and more. He’s fucking awesome. It’s also my belief all their music videos, like their albums are ONE long story. Yep. It’s deeeeeeeep. Lol rant over n out.
A schism is literally a term that is used to describe a deep separation. It is used a lot in religious instances such as the break of Protestant from Catholicism. And even in geology to describe a sudden fault line separation.
the song sounds familiar because they work off the basis of beets and tones that happen in nature. their music is a mathematical reflection that brings a sense of calmness to your mind , body and soul..
Video was made by guitarist Adam Jones btw.
He considers himself more proficient in doing makeup effects than in playing guitar, let that sink in.

One of the best Tool songs in my opinion. It just takes you into a another world I would love to hear it while tripping on acid.
This was their biggest hit because of that iconic bassline, so even if you haven't heard the song, you might have heard someone playing the bassline.
This song was in Guitar Hero! And is about the band and the struggle of writing and recording... Or so I've heard.
An edited, shortened version of Schism did receive air play at least in the Los Angeles metro area when Lateralus came out. IKROQ would play it.
Fun fact, the only Hollywood movie to use a Tool song was Escape from L.A. the song was Sweat
Homeboy talking about alternate reality and shit. Hahah! Love it. Tool is changing you guys and it’s amazing to watch
Tool is the best music video you've never seen. Love u Guys.
Schism is a split or division between two strongly opposing sections or parties based off of differing opinions or beliefs.
I checked but it looks like you guys haven’t done Vicarious yet? That’s amazing
@borntorageagainstem do people make any money on RUclips at all anymore?
It seems that u gotta have millions of subscribers to make a living of YT
@borntorageagainstem Well dunno should I?
that fellow on the right looks so blitzed out of his mind. good times.
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion, between supposed lovers"
Absolute truth..gives me goosebumps every time.
A schism is a break or divide and yes, this song got pretty heavy radio play on Rock / metal and alternative stations when it first came out.
Another sick reaction guys, awesome stuff!!! I 100% agree with you guys on how closing your eyes is far better than watching the video! The videos are great too but I think it’s better to create your own visuals with this band. Another Toolsday in the books 😎
Classic. Sounds like it came out 5 minutes ago. What an INCREDIBLE song.
11:40 now imagine playing that song on guitar hero expert way back in the day.... super intense
When I hear the word schism, I think about a sudden, jarring break - a dividing line down the center, like a canyon formed by tectonic upheaval rather than the gradual carving of a riverbed.
I totally get the whole “I feel like I’ve heard this before yet it’s the first time I’m listening to it.” Especially with Tool.
what about maynard monday?
How about Maynard EVERYDAY...😊🌀🌀🌀
This song along with Vicarious and maybe one more were featured in the video game Guitar Hero: World Tour. It’s been a minute...
So cool. Thanks guys. March on brothers. Peace.
Late to the party.
I feel like that as we listen to this band, as they grow, and we grow, the meaning changes.
Tool is forever amazing.
the middle section of schism may be inspired by a king crimson song called Fracture (1973)
I think you guys should do the Disposition, Reflection and Traid all together. You cannot do those separately. So I think you guys have got to do those together. It’s an otherworldly experience.
Sshism is a division or separation. So his about communication. May have heard similar riffs from Pneuma in the song.
Samuel Rodriguez what what?
Fun fact: Their guitarist did most of their music videos and also did special effects work on the first Jurassic Park movie :)
thats worth mentioning
A schism is literally a term that is used to describe a deep separation. It is used a lot in religious instances such as the break of Protestant from Catholicism. And even in geology to describe a sudden fault line separation.
This video was on MTV2 non-stop for about 3 years
Didnt read through all the comments but Tool got Grammy for this one. Lateralus was a groundbreaker album.
Not Tool, but Judith by A Perfect Circle is an amazing video, directed by David Fincher (Fight Club)
What?? Thought this was blocked!! Glad its here now!!😊
the song sounds familiar because they work off the basis of beets and tones that happen in nature.
their music is a mathematical reflection that brings a sense of calmness to your mind , body and soul..
