It’s almost 2022 and this is the best drum shed I’ve ever watched, Thomas Pridgen did it for me
It's been awhile and this still got my mind blown 🤯
I agree man
Best shed ever
I still watch this today and this is one of the first videos I had on repeat when I first started drumming 12 years ago.
14 years later and I’m still in awe of this shed
I swear that intro is so classic if you've been watching gospel chops you'll know there is no better intro
Came back here in 2020 just to hear it again
Royster playing like Pridgen doesn’t belong next to him. The aggression and precision and responses to his turn is godly. Meanwhile Pridgen gracefully enjoys the moment. A very interesting dynamic.
It's called a SHED. That's when musicians get together to showcase, share, inspire, push and fellowship through music and what they learned. Chops play a major part in sheds. So, to downplay these phenomenal drummers because they do a lot of chops that you can't, only means you have missed the whole purpose of watching this video.
Stephene Smith facts
The people you are having to say that to, are the new non church folks.
This never gets old!!!
Amen bro
Don't think I've ever seen tony work quite this hard alone or with another drummer. Different styles equal talent.
Bassist and Keys infinitely solid ...
Slept on comment.
Dave Jackson on keys and Marcus Phillips on bass.
Exactly. That groove is ridiculous
i’m pretty sure the guy on keys is also a serious drummer
@@jentryhaskins9189 didn’t know that
i think thomas has the best sounding snare ever. that opening roll gives me chills...
This video really changed my life .. remember watching this like 5 years ago
At 7:40 magic is happening, I do not simply understand how anyone can come up with such a beat! Truly amazing...
Tony's singles but Thomas's flams doe 😍
After highschool I made it a mission to watch this, now i’m 27 watching it in 2022. Time truly flies 😢
I wish musicians would come back to this Channel and shed.
I still remember this praise the Lord. Gospel chopz God bless you my brother
You can tell thomas loves what hes doing, He always has that Grin on his face and what makes it even better, He is one of the most badass drummers ever
Who still watching in 2020?
Me, I've been watching this since 2008 off and on. This video first introduced me to Tony Royster. I already knew of Thomas Pridgen when be used to play for the GMWA Youth Mass Choir back in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Shawn Womack who was that drummer in the very first clip?
Terry Watkins please believe 🤙🏿
Me
hell ya
Pridgen's behind-the-beat flow is f--ing insane and so dope. Royster is of course insanely good but Pridgen always stood out to me in this video. Which by the way is an all time classic that I favorited 10 years ago.
I'm so happy this video is still up here, I can't tell you how many times I watched this with my buddies back in high school. It was deff the golden era of youtube for drummers!
I'm so glade found this video again, 2 legends show casing their talents to the world.
TONY THE MAN FLAT OUT MUCH RESPECT YOU DO YO THANG BRO.
the greatest drummers on this planet are the gospel drummers
josé perez Pridgen and Roysters number them one
Yes sir ur right
You have to add Calvin Rodgers and Chris Coleman to this discussion of greatest gospel drummers or just drummers period.
David Rodgers dude, chris coleman is a beast!!! he is the best tho!!!
+Matthew M A lot of jazz drummers are gospel drummers nowadays
This Dvd changed my whole musical journey thank you Gospel Chops
You are forever welcome. We appreciate your support. 🖤💪🏾
TheRealGospelChops 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
at 0:17 he did his thing in the beginning. and i like the foot work and quick ad-libs also the gift that God has blessed them with and the hard work and practice that was giving proves you can do anything but fail. Glory to God!
2 of the best in the world; and this is what it looks like!
Freedom still resides in America and there names are Tony and Thomas!
May I have some lessons please....
Beyond words....
Maaan, this is such a classic clip. It will never get old.
up lifting......watched this 50 times and still hear something new ever time. do what you were meant to do tony and Thomas.....play drums
this guys are both unbelieveable, and are my main influences for drumming
Wow the melody the keyboard & bass player came up wit.. Speechless
I AM goint to my hightschool now. to be on nice mood today, i love to watch this video. seriously. i have only 10 minutes to watch something, and my choise is great jamming... love Pridgen... love Tony
This is called a DRUM SHED. They're literally incorporating syncopated and subdivided licks and trying to fit it in measures as creatively as they can. I can see the organization. But I feel like it would maybe take years of experience to see that in this video. Even the "off-beat" fills and grooves they do. This is real art to me.
Some people just don't understand music that's deeper than the surface.
Dr. Billiam It's okay. It takes time for a drummer to see that. They just have to build up their knowledge on drumming.
Brandon Thomas Right on dude
Mario Jelev you know !! I'm sure you do lol
Brandon Thomas I kinda get what you mean man :-)
I always loved that beginnig drummer in church 😂💀
Ty Henderson do you know what song he and the singers were performing
cold face sounds like I shall wear a crown by Thomas Whitfield
babyboy478 yep
Ty Henderson you know the game of the guy?
@@Fliptastic3that was Quentin jackson playing for the boyd sisters...the full video is no longer on RUclips for some weird reason.
Thomas's snare tuning is a heaven
Fun fact, Thomas is playing on Eric Moore set.
Gospel chops made history at colorblind studios. most think that it evolved drumming, others think it dumbed it down. It definitely influenced the drumming community
There is no, "who's better", here. There is just two incredibly talented people creating and expressing a form of art that takes a very long time to get to. There is no real "best in the world". Everybody plays their own beat. Their own style. Their own way. It's an expression of your character and your feelings. As soon as you try to play like other people, is the time that you just blend in with the crowd. So no, neither was better here. But this was an amazing shed. Forreal. Love it. Enjoy music and you will enjoy life.
So we meet again, Mr. 240p.
Ralph Außerbauer lol hahaha
Am I the only one who is too study this video as a kid..
Justin Lee tgat was my video growing up😭
🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Gospel Chops!
Love these two .... never get tired of listening...
Pridgen should lend tony some of his giant shirt
lol
+jorden brown lol major cloth talk right there lol
lmao!
i love seeing people like you that understand music...
i cann see all day over and over againnnn the real deal of gospell chops are here!!!!
Tony is a machine and can do things regular humans just can't do, but Thomas totally let's himself get carried away by the music and the feeling, and to me, that is just more fun to watch and listen to. Both are brilliant.
this would be one hell of a Red Bull commercial!!!
😂 Love It ! It Got Wings !! 😂
I would love to see these two in a shed like this again. 11 years it would be interesting...
2024 and this still never gets old IJS
I love Real Gospel Chops, everybody stay safe and God will bless you.
This is like watching Dragon Ball Z
Mario Pineda Goku VS Vegeta
Essentially, cause you mess with the new stuff, but always come back to youtube to check out the best battles from Z.
@@TheKDAYshow shirtless guy turned on ultra instinct at the end
@@lwty8608 facts that’s Tony Royster Jr
@@lwty8608 his name is Tony Royster Jr
Damn Tony. Just damn.
These BLESSED Guys Were Finomally Great On Drums...let's also give it up To The Backcourt Musicians...Every Time U C This Video 📹 That "Funky Melodic Groove "Sticks In Your Head🥳😎💜💯💥💣🙏.
They are both beast's!!! I'm really feelings Thomas Pridgen in this video.
Man this here will never get old . 🫡
Who came back 12 years later like me to watch this gem?
Dude walks out the room at 6:01 like "I need to go practice"
Hahahahaha he like forget this im outta here.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha
One Of the most GREATEST 9 Minuets of my life
These are two of the best drummer wow awesome drumming
Thomas Pridgen and Tony Royster Jr. are two of the biggiest drum players in the world. Fantastic.
Thank you. These other simple minded drummers don't know what they're talking about. It's a SHED! They're professional drummers for a reason
Marcelo Eustáquio s
so wat happened to eric moore
You can tell Tony put a lot of work in to making both his hands soooo even.
yeah, I like Thomas' feel more but I really think Tony dominated this battle.
Hands down
3:20 Ha I like how Eric Moore was like "Not me dude. point the camera at the guys that are playing."
Its not what is in your skin its all about whats with in. these brothers are awesome
God given Talent EXTREME. I am a drummer since I was 5, I'm now 45, you guys have inspired me so much. Thank You, God Bless...
Tony is the greatest when it comes to drums believe that so put ya comments up
It's like fine wine. I'll have a glass of that.
annyone watching in 2019??
was literally just having a drum conversation then saw this recommended again. man i probly watched this video like 1500 times
I'm still learning licks from this video! I love coming back to listen to the exchange. Personally I think Tony won this one, but it was great all around!
I always come back to this video and to this day I'm still amazed and inspired.
2020
2020 yo
for guys out there talking about pocket.....this is a shed.. sheds are for musicians to come together and share licks drum fills and different styles... being in the pocket would make the sheds dry and compressed... sheds actually builds and constructs your pocket.... this is awesome for two drum stars to come together in a humble matter and put it all out there
I used to watch this video 7 years back, watching it now, it never gets old.😍
they both have passion but pridgen plays with his heart while tony lays with his brain to completely different styles both amazing
Dude in the intro in the white T killedddd it 😂
ikr whats his name?
Jasthedrummer ONE no idea bro
Quinton Jackson
Terrell TJD. My boy from Oakland Que
He just then masterd tha ability to clutch😂😂😂😂
Royster, all day
What great musicians to keep things rolling while these drums kick it!
i like how each of them plays their snare in a different 'half' of the note. i mean rhythmic value, not pitch. one plays right on the edge of the beat, in the top half, and the other plays more in the back of the beat in the bottom half. the result is when they're playing any kind of unison with the snare, their two snare hits create a wicked flam. awesome video, love the musical conversation these dudes are having.
2024👀
5:26 Thomas tries to go wit the criss-cross, and Tony answers back 5:30 with an even better one
C.O.G.I.C. Drummer
and thomas pridgen did a better 3:54, and tony couldn't do it 4:08 lol
Much respect for Royster's maturity!
Tony Royster Jr is off the 🔗⛓ he killed the ending 💯
Drum battle for sure. What became fun and learned in church turned into a drum battle with attitude and chops blazing.
Tony is the master of single strokes
Man, you can say that again.
lol. you can tell the real drummers on these comments. These two are two of the best out, check their resumes and whom they play for currently and whom they've played for. They both know how to play music of all kinds, and in this instance they are playing chops and having fun. Some of the comments show that some of these ppl just come on here to hate because they with they just half as good. smh
Lol Eric Moore at 3:23
Yeah i was like what the?? Three beasts of drumming! I like Eric Moore the best, but that's just me..
That's nostalgic 😭❤️❤️❤️
This ghospel chops guys are soooo daaamn good!!
I mean all of them!
When u hit a certain level the only way to tell who's the best is by seeing who can play the most styles
Versatility is king
I feel like I'm watching some drum porn or something. That keyboard and just the whole vibe.
+prague Fo Real!
its called shed!! u don't know non bout that!!
Freeman Ajayi I know what it's called. The resolution and everything makes it feel like an old porno.
+prague im laughing really hard right now.
Bradley Martin Right!? Once you see this as an old VHS porno it's hard to unsee!
TONYY FUCKING ROYSTERR!!! YEAH
thomas make almost noise
beautiful phrasings by both.... period
Tony's Very Good... Congratulation
trust me bro tony is feeling the rythem real strong.
Royster is much more focused, has a shorter attack and is more linear. He has some nice one handed rolls, linear 1-beat grooves and more strength overall. Pridgen is more open and washy, more explosive and is less linear, focuses on fills rather than playing pocket. I like them both, but Royster definitely has a one-up on Pridgen for sure.
while i agree royster is better on this...playing in the pocket doesn't necessarily mean its better right? Sorry I'm a jazz saxophonist not a drummer so perhaps I'm wrong
i personally like Thomas Pridgen a bit more, but i think that's because i love The Mars Volta. although Tony Royster Jr. is still a kick-ass drummer.
Joshua Berkoff Yea, I would love if Tony took on more experimental projects like Thomas did
They're both great here. Royster has explosive singles so that's what he's working with here most of the time. Pridgen is doing some more rudimentary stuff, focusing mainly on the drums whereas Royster keeps moving between drums and cymbals. The kit Royster has sounds way better... I can't choose one over the other, I am a huge fan of Royster though...
1337Pwn4g3 pocket means you’re more than likely to get the gig. The less disciplined, groove conscious and overall musical the less you are seen as a suitable musician to build on. This is not to say anything about the drummers in this video. It’s called gospel chops for a reason. We are here for the chops and not necessarily to pit one against the other. They are playing loose and experimenting.
This will never get old
Thats the most finesse I have ever seen Pridgen play with, I appreciate dynamic control as well as velocity and speed
Anybody who says anything negative can't play what these guys can. So... Invalid.
Not always true but k.
You're right. I can't play and they sound like shite. I've heard them play on their own and they sound awesome but this is garbled noise, unstructured nonsense. Play the whole thing without looking at the screen and you'll see what I mean.
That's just because you're a complete idiot.
MrZeddy100 "I can't play..." - MrZeddy100
MrZeddy100 you dont understand its not noise its applying rudiments and exploring them around the kit and being creative
Its strange looking back at videos like this. Thomas has grown up and matured a lot. People might view that as his playing has gotten less exciting. I think he can still do all these tricks hes just uses more tact.
+erique johnson Yeah Thomas became a beast monster
Actually Thomas can do wayy more now. The real difference is his power, speed and precision is light years ahead of this
erique johnson that's good to hear
Greatest shed of all time, nothing touches this.
They both have grown, but Tony is the best drummer ever. In every aspect and category.
2024 here?
The clip I'm talking about is from 0:17 to about 0:27. Somebody tell me what song that is, please...lol!
I shall were a crown
Ok thanks but who is the group? And is there a whole clip? Sounds like Kenya Boyd and her sisters. Not sure though.
Looking through the comments, it really is hard to appreciate stuff like this if you are not a drummer/musician. These sessions obviously aren't meant to be played live during a gig . Think of it as a really high level practice session where these guys are listening to and learning from each other.
Always entertaining to watch drummers of this caliber!!
They're on another level
Eita pegaaaa toop lembre-se bateras unidos jamais serão vencidos 👍🎶
This is if Godzilla and King Kong had a shed session.
