For all of you that haven't noticed. When you make it to this level; if you make it to this level, you will realize that it's not about who can "blaze" who, it's just about the music. They are probably learning from each other, one GOAT to the next!
Thats what its all about!! Yeah i mean u may have sum, nice chops but its not just about that!! Its about learning from one musician brother or sister to another! I play the drums as well and when my friends and i get together and shed thats what we do, we learn, and borrow, and whatever we borrow we put our own feel to it!!! Thats what its about!!!
Yoooooooooo....... the dude with the yellow striped shirt with the dreads is unreal!!! Thanx man I put that video in my favorites... Any real drummers who care will watch the video this man just told us all about!
that's really true, man. At this level it's a matter of personal preference. If the two of them were auditioning for the same gig, it would come down to personality and other things that aren't related to musicianship.
I have been trying to explain that to some of my lil shed buddies..there is just s difference of up bringing. What you wre allowed to listen to or told to not listen to.I dint get into fusion till I was old enough to sneak and venture out musically through radio and tv..
Neither drummer is better then each other, both of them are fantastic drummers, both are absolute machines. Shut up about who is better and ffs enjoy them shredding, thats why this video is here.
Tony all the way. Well rounded. Tell me how many gospel cats you know that can swing, and Im talkin staright ahead jazz, hit the fusion tip in odd meters and have two instructional dvds under the age of 22? None!Mad props to Thomas but lets be real. Tony has the ill resume. They both started very young but Tony has more success based on his versatility. Studied with Chambers who studied with Cobham who studied with Tony Williams. Thats an accomplishment within itself.
yea doc i agree the body language was even different tony was muggin after every solo and t. prig was looking like he was doing a lot of thinking and recovering.. but I think they both play like they possesed!!!!! God Bless
yo did yall catch the fill thomas did at 1:47 to 1:50? Thats the most rudimental roll ive ever heard from gospelchops. Number one its in 5/4 time and it encompasses flams, rolls and difference of drums. I still think tony won, though!LOL (if it was a competition)
Tony did his thing.................Thomas also did his thing............Im feelin TP i just like the dude style...If you really want to hear him get down just get the Christian Scott cd
Dennis Chambers also uses a double pedal and no one ever calls him immature ... That said, he demonstrated ZERO pocket. I know its a shed, but you can still groove every now and then instead of just throwing up over the whole groove for 8 minutes ...
These are my three favorite drummers these cats represent the new school to the fullest that explosive-abstract- and extremely creative style is what drives our generation of percussionist* (Buddy Rich) I wish I could have heard Aaron get in on this one that would have been an atomic bomb
then again it may just be a Bad day for thomas..that lick at 3:5-08 reminded me why i like pridgen. Tony just had his hottness..doc and i agree with dpt1984
tony actual killed it bad. he defntly smacked da shed. thomas was sik as well but u cant beat tony royster. he is da king on drums. if u look at the stuff tony does its all like perfect and clean, he knows exactly wat hes doin and and its soo complex, but he pulls it off with ease.
i could be way off base because i'm not near a piano or guitar, but it sounds like a 1-5-6-3 variation to me... i'm really rusty at picking out chords... but there's something to start with... unless that doesn't help at all, in which case... sorry man.
that's nice of you... but i saw the mars volta (and so thomas pridgen) less than 24 hours ago... they played for over 2h, and now i'm desperate! hahaha
Tony is a beast, and so is Thomas, but honestly, I do favor Thomas at times only b/c he was one of the drummers for the GMWA Youth Mass Choir. Can anyone recall the group that Thomas has out right now? They're on Myspace, but unfortunately, due to some problems, I deleted my account!
Tony Royster is real an athlete on the kit lol! Wow But imma need this camera man to get it together missing all those great shots with lte reaction time 🙄
Technique will make or break a player... chops aside, Royster has a superior technique; particularly his application of the moeller technique. Not to mention, his foot speed is insane. From what I've seen of Thomas Pridgen over the years, he doesn't apply the moeller technique to the extent that Royster does. Sure, Royster does show-boat quite a bit; but you would think that Thomas would've recognized that and brought his A-game to the table. Again... chops aside, talking about technique.
ya but thomas was endorsed bye zildian at 10. he's the youngest in history to do so. neways there both amazing and who cares whos better. they do it for the love of playing. so dont judge just appreciate.
They're both amazing, but all that drum soloing reminds me of walking into guitar center, in the drum section, and the guy at the counter saying, "STOP PLAYING, I CAN'T HEAR THE PHONE!"
I don't know man... I've seen great sessions from a lot of different cats (Chris Coleman, Marvin McQuitty, Derico Watson, etc.) and while this session isn't the most jaw-dropping I've seen; in my opinion Tony just eats Pridgens technique. When you listen to the guys talk... Thomas tends to talk more about licks then he does techniques; whereas Tony tends to show you the technique that will help develop the licks. Either way... they're both monsters... let's all just face that.
they both doin it, they got a lil bit different style from each other, i dont think u really have to call either one better, thomas is real versatile and Tony probably has more chops
I believe some of you guys are missing the point of a shed. It's not to see who's better. Besides both of these dudes are professionals anyways. This is just two monsters having fun.
To appreciate what Thomas is doing now you need to look for "Mars Volta Letterman HD" video here on youtube. You can really hear the drums clearly in that specific video rip. watch?v=BH11YFqMoB0
Homie, double bass is just for speed riffs, there are things you'll never be able to do on a single that you can on a double. Tony Royster ain't no joke looks like someone hit fast forward, it's inhumane/insane.
the usual style of fills, like the fast triplets, the change of the rhythm, the grooves, etc. like most of the drummers you see will shed to shouting music. shouting music, church.
I know you seen Tony when he was 12! You think Thomas could do that at 12? So you think Mars Volta pays better than your own DVD? They both killed it but Tony won, if they where going at it!
I love both drummers, but in my opinion, even though tony has more bombast than thomas, I found his solo ideas much more musically sound compared to tony's. still, mad props to both for being so damn good.
Agreed tony tech is just more envoled, and thomas looks like hes having a Good time.. tony muggin like a pit! niether is in my top 5, there in mytop 10 though..
I don't know- sounded more like a Pridgen was being dwarfed by Tony's Skill. Then again I've seen video of Tony Playing all over the world. That other guy just shows up on gospel chops. Maybe its an organization, motivation thing.
For all of you that haven't noticed. When you make it to this level; if you make it to this level, you will realize that it's not about who can "blaze" who, it's just about the music. They are probably learning from each other, one GOAT to the next!
you are exactly right its about having fun and using you're god given gift to share with you're fellow musicians.
TONY IS THE REAL SHIT BIG UP TO THE MAN
Thats what its all about!!
LOL that look from eric at 5:46 is like:- geez dude, wtf is he doing??!
Yoooooooooo....... the dude with the yellow striped shirt with the dreads is unreal!!! Thanx man I put that video in my favorites... Any real drummers who care will watch the video this man just told us all about!
Sensational
that's really true, man. At this level it's a matter of personal preference. If the two of them were auditioning for the same gig, it would come down to personality and other things that aren't related to musicianship.
4:08 dear god in heaven...
Tony Royster 1 of tha best!!
Weird how the audio from this video is much better than the real video, lots more room sound in this one.
They should have put this on the DVD!!!
Shedding isnt about competition. Its just musicians coming together to play to the best of their abilitys
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This video still amazes me!
mos def shreddding machine material to enjoy and watch over and over again..lol.
excelent drumming.
I have been trying to explain that to some of my lil shed buddies..there is just s difference of up bringing. What you wre allowed to listen to or told to not listen to.I dint get into fusion till I was old enough to sneak and venture out musically through radio and tv..
Man, Thomas is tearing it up with them drum rolls!
Neither drummer is better then each other, both of them are fantastic drummers, both are absolute machines.
Shut up about who is better and ffs enjoy them shredding, thats why this video is here.
Thomas IS the Volta drummer. He's a beast.
Tony all the way. Well rounded. Love how they are playing on each others kit.
I think sooo to bro!
I know. I can either do one or the other... but this alone helped.
In my opinion tony won it!
Eric moore is killing it
Os melhores!!!
yea doc i agree the body language was even different tony was muggin after every solo and t. prig was looking like he was doing a lot of thinking and recovering.. but I think they both play like they possesed!!!!! God Bless

Yeah TP got chops tho....im wit you on that!
i'd love to see Tony Royster and Aaron Spears use their God given talent, have fun, and track licks...
The original video was deleted dunno why but i sure enjoyed royster creativity
yo did yall catch the fill thomas did at 1:47 to 1:50? Thats the most rudimental roll ive ever heard from gospelchops. Number one its in 5/4 time and it encompasses flams, rolls and difference of drums. I still think tony won, though!LOL (if it was a competition)
good man.

These are my three favorite drummers
these cats represent the new school to the fullest that explosive-abstract- and extremely creative style is what drives our generation of percussionist* (Buddy Rich)
I wish I could have heard Aaron get in on this one that would have been an atomic bomb
holy mother of god
Didn't know it was that serious.... Sorry if I hurt your feelings. Hope you feel better.
Take Care
They both did things with Dennis Chambers
then again it may just be a Bad day for thomas..that lick at 3:5-08 reminded me why i like pridgen. Tony just had his hottness..doc and i agree with dpt1984
A some dude made a dude comment about Thomas having more gigs then Tony... dude has his own DVD! And who you think got paid more to do this DVD?
nnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo u r wildin doc
Os Melhores bateras do Mundo, só não vi Dennis Chambers...

4:08 Royster mode Activated
Wut yall think bout jeremy haynes vs. tony royster
Eric Moore like ... whaaaaatttt!
tony actual killed it bad. he defntly smacked da shed.
thomas was sik as well but u cant beat tony royster. he is da king on drums.
if u look at the stuff tony does its all like perfect and clean, he knows exactly wat hes doin and and its soo complex, but he pulls it off with ease.
Nathan Bossoh and that's why most say tony Thomas is cold he can do what Tony did but yomy going to get more respect because of who he is
i could be way off base because i'm not near a piano or guitar, but it sounds like a 1-5-6-3 variation to me... i'm really rusty at picking out chords... but there's something to start with... unless that doesn't help at all, in which case... sorry man.

Dave jackson on keys!
Tony Royster is real an athlete on the kit lol! Wow
But imma need this camera man to get it together missing all those great shots with lte reaction time 🙄
Tony Royster Shitted On This Nigga @ The End!
Straight Kill Off!
Technique will make or break a player... chops aside, Royster has a superior technique; particularly his application of the moeller technique. Not to mention, his foot speed is insane. They have been playing around each other since they were little
@SPVOLS Thomas is playing on Eric Moore's kit
does tony use one pedal or two during the shed?
Is TP playing Eric Moores set?
i can't get over the fill that pridgen did at 3:09 ...
Thomas! Don't poke the bear!!!
From minute 1:20 to 1:30 that is cool righ thier.
Who is that on the keys?
Tony en Thomas are both 2 beasts on the drums but i liked thomas more because he's more musical on this one
ya but thomas was endorsed bye zildian at 10. he's the youngest in history to do so. neways there both amazing and who cares whos better. they do it for the love of playing. so dont judge just appreciate.
Of course Thomas was mess in up like 500times lol….but its all good….
dude... royster almost looks bored waiting for this cat to get out of his way... royster is just a straight up massive cat!
Which drummer is which?
They're both amazing, but all that drum soloing reminds me of walking into guitar center, in the drum section, and the guy at the counter saying, "STOP PLAYING, I CAN'T HEAR THE PHONE!"
is that marcus phillips on bass?
What is this tune? Or is it just improvised?
The two prodigies thats tight. I have a new level of respect for tom though I always thought him to be too technical but not in this video.
I don't know man... practice fast licks at half time and then up your metronome speed.
Homie, double bass is just for speed riffs, there are things you'll never be able to do on a single that you can on a double. Tony Royster ain't no joke looks like someone hit fast forward, it's inhumane/insane.
The girls in the back like okay what’s really going on
4:04 Da CRAZIEST FILL EVER!!!
the usual style of fills, like the fast triplets, the change of the rhythm, the grooves, etc. like most of the drummers you see will shed to shouting music. shouting music, church.
tony is better!!! definetly he is one of the ebs drummers in the wolrd! :D

I don't know- sounded more like a Pridgen was being dwarfed by Tony's Skill. Then again I've seen video of Tony Playing all over the world. That other guy just shows up on gospel chops. Maybe its an organization, motivation thing.
