I put this in a drum practice playlist years ago. I’m again hitting another wall in my playing and im so glad I can go back to clips like this to refresh on the basics
Thomas is one of the finest drummers I've seen and I've seen a lot of them, I save his videos on my computer so I can go back and study his moves! I only wish I had practiced like him when I was young. I don't know if it the right thing to say,but I never practiced, I just knew how to play, and I couldn't afford a teacher like the Dave Weckyls of the world, it was a gift from "GOD"!
Thomas, you are imo a very talented/honest/down to earth, human being. i'm your number 50,000,000 fan, man! i'm sure there are that many peolpe out there who are just as inspired by you as i am. cheers!
Yeah, he's right about slow. Put the met on at 40 or 35 and try to make it groove and bury the click changing from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 per beat. It's a killer! You can really hear your inconsistencies much more than when you play fast.
@Hemsom1rojder I'm with you on that man....Like you constantly hear drummers talk about how "it's all about having fun" when in reality they are training so rigid like it's the drumming Olympics or something. With Thomas you can tell that he just has been having fun from day one which carries over in to his great sound and feel.
Any idea how tight his bass drum head would be?? I just got a new 23" kick and i've gotta work a lot harder for the rebound in comparison with my old 20"
+MorbidManMusic who cares, though? he also hated the way billy cobham played. buddy was amazing, but he was incredibly narrow-minded about different approaches to drumming.
@ImaFez It's not just that but what makes it sad is people are gonna think "OH I CREATED THIS STYLE" but not know the history of where Thomas's style came from (and no it's not just from church lololol),
just keep doing it, i have basically full control on my right hand, but not on my left simply because the right is used to doing that sort of it. just do it more and more and try to keep it as loose as possible, but just tight enough so it doesnt move. keep trying, it'll come!
"like i'm not playin hella hard, i'm not like (flails arms), it just looks like it cuz my hair is like it" Thomas... Your kidding right?? You lay into those freaking 20'/24' inchers until they're almost vertically upright!!!
Love his approach to practicing. I really respect the drummers like Thomas Lang and Dave Weckl that practice 8 hours every day but when you look at the big picture i believe Thomas Pridgen has a more defined sound than them. Please dont go all "Thomas Lang is a million times better drummer than him!" cuz I know that in many ways they are but in my ears, Thomas Pridgen has a more healthy look upon practicing and music and I think that comes out in his kind of playing. Cheers!
that's just stupid and hypocritical to say you go to church and you couldn't play if you sucked it's church it shouldn't be about how good you are i''m sorry this guys attitude is so wrong
you are so right brother. God sees the heart and not the chops. Sadly though...."Gospel chops" have become a catch phrase for an industry that might not be so biblical
It has nothing to do with be overly critical, egotistical or biblical for that matter as the commenter above^ has so mistakenly put it; the fact of the matter is-- church service is not about you being able to play just for the sake of playing or on the job training. If you are allowed to play in church or any professional music setting, you have to be able to hold the pocket, that means keeping good timing and feel. You can not disrupt worship service as you try to learn how to play on the spot, you have to play after church and do your homework and you'll earn that spot. Church is not a free for all, and if you noticed, he said they could not play during offering, which is a smaller part in the service, but equally important as music goes forth at this time as well. Overall, if you are not the church's designated drummer, then you or anyone else are not entitled to sit in during service.
Drumming in the hood......Put this guy on a click.....he would fail miserably. DW and Promark sponsers this guy?? The bar has been lowered folks. Let this guy sit across from Dennis Chambers.....This poser would quit and get a job at Walmart after 15 minutes of seeing a real pro.
You realize he went to Berklee College of Music, right? He would definitely not fall apart if put to a click lol, but I guess you'd just assume that because he doesn't play and practice the way YOU think he should.
What a cool guy as well as a phenomenal drummer. Inspired, haha "I'm not gonna say what you want me to say" hilarious

Life Lesson: Gotta hit them harder when they're bigger!
@gpcovers Indeed! Evans, Pro Mark, DW, now if only he used Meinl, he would have the perfect setup.
