  • Hey guys welcome to today's video. in today's video I just purchased this 1986 Pontiac firebird. let's get it washed up and detailed bring it back to the shop and see if we can get this 2.8 multi-port fuel injection motor running and driving.
    This 1986 Pontiac Firebird could also be a great base for a Knight Rider Kitt car build. Leave your comments below if you would like to see this car get turned into a kit Knight Rider replica build of the original 1982 Pontiac Trans Am Kitt car from Knight Rider.
    if you like this video be sure to check out some other videos on my channel here as well

      My first Camaro was a 1982 with a 4 cylinder 🙄😆
      Ran really good but before you could get out on the highway you had to make sure that nobody was coming as far as you could see down the road 😆 if you seen somebody then you better wait until they go past you before pulling out on the highway. That was the slowest vehicle I have driven well my 29 modelAA was slower but not much 😆👍

    NIce dash pad! it is pretty rare to see them in that good of condition! One thing to remember is that the reason GM didn't put the 350 in front of the T5 was because the cases would break under the torque. Another thing to keep in mind is that the 2.8 has a different bellhousing than a SBC, so you would have to find a 305 bell housing for it and then detune the 350 or grandpa it around to keep from grenading the T5. I put a LT1 style T56 behind a 2005 junkyard LQ4 in my 89 GTA and it is a wonderful combination- i would highly recommend going that route- I got the engine for $180 from Pick-a-Part and the trans for $1400 on ebay but the accessories and exhaust can eat your lunch if your not careful- need a LS1 intake and all the accessories, Hawks conversion headers, and a custom flywheel/clutch setup to get the older T56 to bolt up. You also need to cut a part of the bellhousing off the bottom to get the larger ring gear to fit. But Ive been romping on it for 2 years without issue.

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah it's definitely surprising to see them and not too bad of shape there's a couple small cracks on it but nowhere near as bad as some of the other ones I've seen. Perfect this is good information to know, I was definitely thinking I was going to need some V8 parts for that conversion to work properly. Yeah that definitely sounds like a good combo for sure I'll definitely have to put something good in this car once I get to that part. Give it some more power behind those Wheels.

I always wanted to put a supercharger on the 2.8 because honestly, it was the toughest, most reliable little engine.. I drove the piss out of it… and other than a water pump once, it never left me stranded. I’d love to find another one myself… do it justice!!! ☺️ as for the 91, was never a fan of those noses… it would make a great KITT clone.

    I have a firebird with a 2.8L like yours and I have always enjoyed it just the way it is. You have others with a bigger engine. Just bring that one back to life fully with the engine you have in it. The problem you are developing is that you are collecting lots of cars but none are done and if you continue to proceed like this, none will be done. Bring one all the way back with nice seats, nice paint, so you have at least one car you can show off and drive everywhere then move onto the next one.

      Oh exactly I definitely have to work on one and get it finished, haha I just keep coming across these cars for a very low value lol. This one was $500 Canadian for example. So with the low price I'll pick them up so they're there for a future build. Just like yesterday came across an 86 Iroc Z for $600 Canadian. I'm currently working on the 80 Scottsdale Start to finish once that's done. I'll pull in one of the 3rd gens to get started on

To car shows and put the will it run sign out front of the car. So the people can see that it's a RUclips Will It Run car. And have the video to watch on it. Thought it would be cool and next season I'll have it painted for shows

    We have a 1990 Pontiac firebird 3.1, a longer stroke version of the 2.8. it's a 4 speed automatic with overdrive and the color is white, my grandparents bought it Brand new and even today it still looks brand new. Everything is original, we have had issues with the engine of stalling/starting and rough idle issues from time to time but when fixed it runs good. And it will remain in the family for many years to come, I've always loved this generation firebird. Something about the style always catched my eye. Idk i feel like you should fix this up and keep it stock, I'm sure many people will disagree and will probably tell me it needs a v8. But i feel this v6 engine is kinda a unique engine, it may not be as reliable or as fast as the v8 but for what it is it's decent, and gets pretty good mpg on long drives if it runs properly.

    Making this a KITT on the outside would be amazing, I think you'd need the KITT nose (there are a few different ones depending on which season nose you are going for, the YT channel Knight Rider Historians has a video on that), the rear bumper, the hood, and the taillights. You got the correct rear spoiler already and the Firebird is a good base for it as it doesn't have that bulky looking body kit that '85+ Trans Ams have.

Just need to find a Trans Am Hood front fenders and those style rally rims. For the exterior of the vehicle paint and body work for me is not a problem I do all that. It looks like the hardest aspect would be tracking down all the interior components of the car for a build.

    The 2.8L with a manual would be a great daily driver. Cheap and simple to keep running, and good fuel mileage if it's in good tune.
    Long time ago I was looking at getting a Fiero, and one day an 86 Firebird 2.8L (automatic) was set out for sale in the middle of my daily drive. I stopped to look at it, and I was tempted. I always liked 3rdgens. It almost seemed like fate, but I decided against following up on it. I've always wondered if I should have. I wish I could have bought both.

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah they're super affordable priced like this one here I picked up for $500. They are affordable to purchase not crqzy expensive for the parts you may needs like this for example. new quarter panels are like $225 each, fenders are like $150. Full interior kits to replace the stock seat covers the door panels headliner carpet are around $800. That's what I've sourced out and that's in Canadian dollars. A car like this one that's in this kind of shape I can totally redo and repaint etc. for around $2500 Canadian. To bring it back to an orginal shape. That's quarter panels, floor panels that are needed, tail lights etc new interior. Body work material Paints primer /base coat/clear coat etc. I do all the work myself so it saves a great deal not taking it to a shop And also swapping out to a V8/700R4 I've found 350/700R4 combos on Facebook market place for around $500-$800 for a running driving combination.

    You almost need a donor car to save the 86 with all the cancer and desire to do a motor swap. I've been messing with the f-body cars for over 30 years. Nine of my parts/projects I have parked around my workshop are 3rd gens, seven are 4th gens, and one is a 2nd gen. I round out the rest of the collection with three 57 chevy bel airs, a 85 K10, and a 68 Merc Cyclone GT. God only knows what will come and go from my collection day by day! Nice channel you got here and good luck with the 86 and 91 Birds!

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah the panels are definitely rusted on this one pretty good. I'm glad that I'm able to get the panels that are pretty decent price through Classic Industries. Should be able to cut and weld some new ones in no problem all the dents etc on the doors I can pull and hammer and dolly.
      That's sweet can't have to many 3rd gens, these are getting popular again they were alot of peoples high school cars or first cars. And now are looking to get them back. Those 57 chevys are slick cars so much style in those. Mercury Cyclone there's a rare car I've only ever seen one of them out of all the car shows I've been to and like the last 15 years only came across one. Thanks I appreciate that 🙏

      @@fullyloadedkustoms Yeah, I hear ya! At least for now you can still get quarter panels for third gens. You are right that the third gens are growing in value. I just sold an 89 GTA that was a daily driver quality I put together for 6k a few months ago. Took some of that money and grabbed a rare 88 GTA notchback project and a 92 GTA project (with a dealer installed SLP performance pack) to play with. The Cyclone is so rare that they don't offer many aftermarket repair parts for it, so I'm stuck trying to track down other dead 68-69 Cyclones or Montego's for parts since it's sister the Ford Torino does not interchange.

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад

      @notyourtypicalchad6778 yeah exactly good thing you can get a bunch of parts for the third gens. But they're definitely going up in the value and a lot of people are seeking them out now I noticed. Oh that's sweet a notchback is pretty rare you don't see those around too often they made a small limit of those ones.

    • @notyourtypicalchad6778
      @notyourtypicalchad6778 11 месяцев назад

      @@fullyloadedkustoms I believe they only made 716 factory notchback GTA's in 1988 and a very very few early 89 models got one. They are indeed rare, but the Holy Grails are those 89 Turbo Trans Ams you have to have a fat wallet for and the very limited production 91-92 Firehawk Formulas(think less than 14 3rd gen Firehawks were made? @jasonburgess1523 yeah there's sweet cars I've always loved these 3rd gens. I used to have an 83 Camaro sports coupe in high school. My buddy Nick had an 89 Formula Firebird. Lots of great memories in these. That's awesome what color was the one you had in high school?

    Well whatddayaknow! A fellow Albertan! Yee Haa! Great stuff!By the way that "Paint" on that Bord might not be actual paint. I bought an older BMW a few years back and it was white but it looked like it was sliver underneath. I started to just pressure wash it and it peeled like that one did. Then I found out it was something called "Plasti Dip". Which if put on with a thick coat can be peeled off in sheets or if put on badly (Thin) you can get it off with WD-40 yes that's right WD-40 and a plastic paint scraper and it will come off in gooey gobs. Check it out.

      Nice what area of Alberta are you from? Yeah this is definitely rattle can paint that's on this car. Would have been nice if I got lucky and it was the Plasti Dip and I could have peeled it right off haha that would have been great the blue paint was clearly not prepped at all LOL. Car wash took a good amount of that paint off haha

      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah that's definitely what I'm thinking is it's going to make a fantastic KITT replica just need to research all the parts I would need to build that car now. It'll definitely need a little bit more power behind those Wheels there too.

    lol, the 2.8 was on of the few motors where I'd take EFI over carb. The carb those came with was the most godawful Frankenstein's monster I've ever seen. 😂

      Yeah it was definitely surprising for being only a V6 and actually has a really good sound to it I was not expecting that especially with the stock Muffler haha. I just picked up a 83 Z28 Camaro I wanna say that this V6 Firebird actually has a better sound to it lol

    350 or 383... whichever you can get in a good shape. Then, once done, I would totally sell it to my neighbor if I were you! 😅

      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад

      Hahah well hey there is an idea. This one would definitely make it great K.I.T.T build. Just have to Source the parts I need for it. And then work towards it to make it happen 👍🏻 and then once it's built see if the neighbors interested in buying a Knight Rider car.

    How much did you buy it for if its ok to ask? Im about to buy an 85 TA. Its a manual with a 350, headers and cam (supposedly, not crazy of things where I dont know what was done). Its rough but body is straight, little rust. T tops that dont seem to leak. No key....but its 500 bucks, and if I can crank it and start it, might be able to skoot quick home. Its like .8 miles away from me lol.
    What drives me nuts though, that the car was red, but repainted this dark blue. Who does that? lol

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  Месяц назад

      @RipRoaringGarage for this Firebird I paid $500 Canadian, I usually try and find the really good deals for these cars for the channel. $500 for that 85 TA to me sounds like an awesome deal. And to replace the key cylinder on those isn't hard at all. Especially if it's a non VATS car and you don't have to deal with a vehicle anti theft system, makes it quick and easy to change out I think a new ignition key and cylinder is like $35 good luck on the TA

      @@fullyloadedkustoms Thanks. Im enjoying watching the cars. Out here there are very, very few classics left like this. I bought everything in my area lol. A 96 XJ (though that was from Craigslist, so cheating lol), a Grand Marqius thats now a daily driver from around the corner, and this. Would have had it by now if he didnt forget the title. But, hes going to get a key made. Not sure how...trial an error? His buddy is a locksmith. He initially wanted 1000, and I negotiated it down to 500, plus he gives me a key. How, dontcare lol. I think the trunk is a round key right? Or is it the same key like the glovebox? The small key?
      Its been almost 30 years since I owned an 80s F body so I dont remember, and my brain is going to 70s Fords, where the glovebox key and trunk key are the same oval keys.

      Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel. Yeah a kitt car qpupd would be a fun build. That's my channel Logo for Fully Loaded Kustoms. It's a nod to the first car i ever painted my 79 Trans Am. I will have a Merch store set up soon that I will connect to my channel when the website is all finished up 👍🏻

      thanks for the reply! ill take a look at your previous vids. i must say the 79 transam sounds amazing, as i love the bandit transam on a 77. one day ill own one hehe. but i do love a kitt replica and black is def the colour for this car. i look foward to seeing what you do. as soon as the merch shop is open ill be getting me something for sure. (im subscribed to twin sticks, not sure you know him, but hes just finished a snowman KW and will be doing a transam too!) thanks fella, keep those vids coming!

      @antwilliams2253 @antwilliams2253 yeah I definitely wouldn't mind finding that Trans Am again and getting to repaint it and build it the way I wanted to build it. Now that I fully know how. It would definitely be a fun project to do. I've also got an idea to build a replica of my 83 Camaro I had back in high school that got me into airbrushing. It had a classic flame paint job on it and I would love to redo that vehicle as well. A 77 Bandit Trans Am would be awesome to have. I know where there is one sitting I might have to go pick that up and do it will it run on it and get that restored too if the owner is interested in selling it. No I've heard of twin sticks garage I think my brother mentioned it because he's also located in Alberta too. That's again for leaving your comments it's greatly appreciated I tried to reply to every comment I get 👍🏻

    What engine is in that? Is it a 4.3 or smaller? The last 4 Chevys I have owned had the 4.3 and I swear by them for reliability and torch. I had a 80s Firebird that had the 2.8 but it just didn't have any power.

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  11 месяцев назад +1

      So this 86 Firebird this one had the 2.8L multiport fuel injection engine in it, I had a 83 Camaro back in high school and it had the V6 2.8L carbureted motor in it. They definitely don't have to much power maybe around 130HP at best. But from what I've been reading apparently those 2.8 Motors are pretty Bulletproof and really reliable

      You know I actually have heard of this before some of the older GM keys once they're worn out they tend to work on other cars haha. I still have the lock cylinder in the console maybe I should go through some extra GM keys I've got kicking around here see if anything works on it before I order a new one.
