Queen Mary’s curtsy was the pinnacle of the series for me. She was really the most fascinating character.
She was like from another era, where monarchies were the main form of government, and dynasties had ruled for generations. A shame she saw them fall
This scene blew my mind honestly. Queen Mary would have shown honor to her father-in-law, her husband, both of her sons, and now her granddaughter. What a legacy. Her character was very interesting.
@@jonathanandgabrielsovereig5051 You forgot her grandmother-in-law, Queen Victoria.
Yes that curtsy gave me the creeps. Like something out of Dracula
Guy playing Lascelles totally dominates every scene he is in. Should have got an Oscar
I loved Queen Mary but King George VI was my favorite character.
Queen Mary really deserves her own show covering her life. She grew up as semi-royal on the periphery of the British Royal Family, went through two world wars, her sons abdication, and so much more.
There is talk of a prequel. Deffo
This was made to celebrate all the jubilee stuff
And her first fiancee croaked 6 weeks into their engagement. Then she married his brother.
She was an alcoholic and a gambler
Very intelligent and sophisticated (spent much of her youth in Italy and had a lifelong love of Italian art and culture). She ended up married to a one dimensional boor whose only interests were stamp collecting, bullying his children, and blasting game birds out of the sky. She had a weakness for pretty objects and would embarrass her hosts wherever she visited into giving her any ‘objet d’art’ which caught the royal eye.
Tommy's the kind of guy you call when a dirty job needs to be handled firmly, in discretely, and without fail, when only those that need to know, know.😮
we need a prequel called 'The Empire' that goes from Queen Victoria to King George VI
I believe that Netflix is already planning a prequel, beginning with Queen Victoria's death in 1901 and ending at 1947
Queen Victoria alone deserves a series (I know there's one already, from her early years)
Her reign was the best in recent british history and her late years 1870-1901 marked the best era of hers on the throne
@@ebanydwayne1357 she has one its called victoria on pbs its three seasons and very good i hope they make another one!!
I would totally watch that
There was a show on PBS called 'Victoria', that ran for 3 seasons@@ebanydwayne1357
The way they dropped their salute just as the prince walks by. Ouch.
You salute the Queen not the rank
he wasnt a prince at that time anyway
@ninab.4540 Queen is a rank 😂. It's a job nothing more nothing less
Queen Mary's letter is extraordinarily powerful and poignant.
Dame Atkins is phenomenal in every way. Such a treasure
Dame Eileen*
Agreed. That voice especially.
The three great monarchies brought down. The Romanovs (Russia), The Hapsburgs (Austria Hungary), and the Hohenzollerns (Germany).
She played the same role in the movie, Bertie and Elizabeth, and she killed it then and still does fantastic now
Tommy, not afraid to step on anyones toes, and firmly.
lol you could always count on Tommy to check people, respectfully. 😂
He is PETTY! lol
This is one of my favorite scenes of the series. Queen Mary’s narration of Elizabeth’s transformation from woman to monarch is stirring. Plus, there’s another Boss Tommy moment putting Philip in his place.
Really? They knew the Dowager Queen Mary, smoked, drank, and then used a nebulizer, whilst writing her letters? So cheeky. I did enjoy these Claire Foy years.
How old are you? Don't you know this is a tv series? Lol it's full of lies lol read a book
The crown must win. Must always win .
Queen Elizabeth was never referred to as Elizabeth Mountbatten. She was not a commoner. Royal Highnesses do not have a surname. She was a Royal Highness before she became queen. She was born HRH Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York. After her father became king, she was known as HRH The Princess Elizabeth. After she got married, she was known as HRH The Princess Elizabeth Duchess of Edinburgh and never as Elizabeth Mountbatten.
And Queen Mary, of all people, would never have used, that name. When Lord Mountbatten made his notorious claim that the House of Mountbatten was now reigning, Queen Mary took immediate steps to put an end to what she called "this Battenberg nonsense '. Sadly the name is constantly used nowadays.
It’s just a show, not everything will be hyper-literal. Queen Mary puts it this way to contrast her new destiny with her inner sense of identity. But sure, I guess she could have had the same effect and been more accurate with “Elizabeth Windsor”.
So what. She was a human being. No better than anyone. Windsor has never done squat for anyone except look down upon them. Let God sort them out to be common.
She got Batten'd alright
Hey, she chose him 😂
we know all of this, this is a tv series, whoever takes this as real deserves their ignorance
Claire is the best for Elisabeth❤.Iconic❤
3 Great Monarchies brought down unable to separate their self-indulgence from duty...
Russian Empire,
Austro-Hungarian Empire,
German Empire
All POWERFUL nations...
THAT WAS THE MAIN REASON THE USA ENTERED WWI TO BRING DOWN THE MONARCHIES! NOW IT´S WORKING ON BRINGING DOWN THE BRITISH MONARCHY !
Weren’t they brought down by the war?
@@theheartofsportsnetwork
Oh yes, they were.. and by their "personal indulgences"...
The German Kaiser was so keen to indulge in war, since he had an aggressive attitude (too much individuality, as Tommy Lacelles used to say)...
The Russian Czar had too much personal dilemmas... the Czarina had too much indulgences with Rasputin.
The Austrian Imperials... they too had massive problems in their circles...
All resulting in making the war worse and then... "Forced Abdication"...
All Great Monarchies.. All EMPIRES
The fall of the Russian Empire was the mismanagement of the nation by Tsar Nicholas II (cousin of King George V) and his German wife Tsarina Alexandra (during WW1 against the German Empire).
Spain as well in the 30s… though not as powerful as it was in the 16th and 17th centuries…
My dears, I encourage you to watch the Royal Wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip here: ruclips.net/video/I3idk_180vo/видео.html
this was the best scene tbh
I can only imagine how hard it is to do nothing but to ensure that the crown's victory must be constant. This is why I have tremendous respect for Elizabeth II. Forever may she reign.
You do realise she has passed over a year ago, right? Her reign over Great Britain and the Commonwealth has been passed down to her son King Charles III.
@@powerpuff_avenger when I said "Forever may she reign." I meant her legacy.
@@irawilliams343 she will indeed be cherished as a wonderful and respected monarch!
Diana was not an enemy of the crown…the crown was an enemy of Diana!
@@powerpuff_avengerIt's already happening. People are calling Big Ben Elizabeth Tower.
A logical order of precedence would not have blocked Philip from escorting her, he was her consort. But I hear this isn't always the case for a queen regnant. As long as Philip doesn't disembark first. You'd think a brand new monarch would be escorted with a bonded courier.
This show is so good
The letter may sound cold but it was her grandmothers way to help her firstborn grandchild.
Monarchy will always be important, it's 1,000 years of history
But what do they DO for England but bleed them dry? Do away with the Monarchy and the IRS!!
the crown must always win to keep them in positions of power is what she really meant
“No sir the crown takes precedence”Philip’s pride and ego got stomped!
I don’t understand. He is her husband, why is it preferable to see the The Queen disembark alone?
@@roadwarrior144 because she is the sovereign,he’s a subject, husband or not…he has to pay allegiance to her and swear his loyalty and service…same with her mother, her children and the rest of the Royal family ….
@@54blewisSo, for The Queen to be seen alone is to see The Queen above all else/others?
@@roadwarrior144 she’s the symbol and representative of the nation, and cannot be seen subservient to anyone person except the country itself,so to answer your question, yes absolutely !
Yes, that might be true.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved this series, but I found myself really loving the earlier seasons the most. Especially the ones from the 1940s and 1950s and even some of the earlier flashbacks to the 30s. I understand why the series focuses on Queen Elizabeth 's life, but it would've been really interesting to see an earlier version of The Crown. I know Peter Morgan and Netflix are in talks for a prequel, but I don't expect that series anytime soon. I know Peter Morgan wants a break, but when we do get it, I think it's gonna be just as wonderful. I believe his idea is the story of the four Kings. King Edward VII, Queen Victoria's son, his son King George V after the death of his older brother Prince Albert Victor. Then David (Edward VIII) - the one who fell in love with Wallis and eventually abdicated and then finally end with King George VI, QEII's father.... It'd be excellent!
for people like me, who have always lived as a citizen of a democratic presidential republic, shows as these one are terribly fascinating... i really can't imagine what this must be like. how is it, you know? waking up in the morning knowing there's a monarch, that by birthright, represents your state... so weird yet intriguing to think about!!
Because it doesn’t affect their day to day lives in any meaningful way, at least that’s what I’d assume
One of my earliest childhood memories was of seeing the Queen's portrait at the end of a long highway in the school where I started kindergarten. Eerie to realize that I'm in my 50s now -- most of the teachers, and even the school itself are gone. The Queen reigned for a long time ... she even outlived my parents. On one level I knew that she was a mortal like the rest of us, but I can pick up a handful of coins from the jar where I keep my spare change, and they all have her portrait -- they will be in circulation for the rest of my life, I bet. (I even saw some of her father's coins well into the new century.)
It is something bigger than ones life as it spans centuries or even milenia and since it no longer affect day to day lives of us plebeians, it's more of a part of national identity, part of culture.
Amazing how this letter makes so much sense once you see all the following seasons. Was the sacrifice worth it though?
I don't think it was worth it, but in the moment, it was what had to be done
What were the three great monarchies?
That Lascelle person, if I can be so generous to call him a person, enjoys causing pain like an alcoholic enjoys cheap booze.
Sorry to say this, but the Queen should have taught her children it.
Not a big fan of monarchies, but that was a descent speech.
And we aren't fans of americans and their obsession with Guns, but here we are, hey
She had to ensure the monarchy survive otherwise her life of uselessness was over.
@@Breeanna73 Lovely that anyone who thinks that your monarchy is absurd is an honorary American.
America should have never saved your monarchy in WWI or WWII or all of Europe with the Marshall Plan. We should have remained unentangled in foreign wars.
@@SamBrickell Buddy I was with you until the "America saved your ass" bit. That's most 'murican take I've ever seen and it does not help your protest of being called an American just because you are anti-monarchy. And yes I am American.
Lord Mountbatton and Diana, funny how enemies of the crown end
Claire was paid less… wtf
Less than Matt Smith? He had been the star of Doctor Who for several years, and it's a massively popular show in the United Kingdom. So, not really surprising.
She was a virtual unknown so yeah
Matthew Smith’s portrayal of Prince Phillip was so far from the mark. He slouched all the way through his scenes - PPhillip always had the straight posture of a naval officer. He gave a very disappointing performance - not just in this scene - Philip’s descent down the plane’s steps was very light-footed and purposeful - but throughout the two seasons he was on the show. Claire Foy was absolutely brilliant. I’m so impressed by her incredible portrayal of the young Queen Elizabeth!
I am afraid that Charles is unable to make this distinction.
I dunno about that queen mary, your great grandchild seems to make his emotions win instead of the crown, example per se, trying to woo camila even if he still has a wife
One simply must point out that the Crown really stopped "winning" in 1649, when Charles I was beheaded for failing to comply with Parliament's wishes.
A simplistic analysis if ever there was one
U mean clown 🤡 joker🃏🥴🐍🌪️👽💩
Awful! These series when the main personalities are alive and having to watch their ‘duplicates’ performing must heave with revulsion and occasional hilarity.
