Surely not the princess Margaret one. If Margaret would have really wanted to marry him she could have. I understand it was painful for both of them but the Queen had very good reasons to nto allow the marriage. Margaret could have left and gone on to marry Townsend but she prefered the life style being royal allwoed her to live. She had a choice and she made it.

I agree. He had nothing to gain by her death. Neither did Queen Elizabeth. Only Charles did. The heir to the throne could not remarry with a living ex-wife it seems. It still took nearly another 8 years for him for Elizabeth to allow him to marry Camilla; and at the point Elizabeth said Camilla would become princess consort at her death. Charles eventually got his way through. He eventually wore his mother down, although it speaks volumes that she did not agree until the frail age of 95 and recently widowed that she finally agreed to Camilla being queen consort. I do feel if Charles did not have Diana killed, it was powerful fans/friends of his. I do not believe the garbage about Diana being a threat to national British security so the CIA and M16 did it together. She was no threat. How is wanting land mines removed a threat? If she was any threat, it was only to the British monarchy continuing.

It may or may not be true to life. The "Marburg files" have never been more than rumour, Windsor always vehemently denied he ever colluded with the Nazis, and plenty of people had strong motives to smear him (even this script leaves open the possibility Lascelles is simply lying). Agree its awesome writing and acting, though.

@sdlimaye: I believe the sentiments about the Buckingham Palace that Mrs. Kennedy expressed had more to do in comparison to how she found the White House after Mrs. Eisenhower‘decorated’ it. Mrs. Kennedy felt the White House should reflect the art and culture of the country, not an Army PX store. She likely felt that Buckingham Palace should have been the same and more elegant. Instead she thought it was dowdy and perhaps it does have an old traditional appearance. Of course the Queen has more to worry about than Mrs. Kennedy and did not palm off the least desirable parts of her job to others as Mrs. Kennedy did.

1966 was a year of contrasts for the UK. England had won the World Cup in the summer and then there was the horror of Aberfan in October. I was 14 at the time, and the scenes of the townspeople digging up coal slag waste with their bare hands to try to rescue their buried children was heartbreaking to the whole nation. We were all really emotional about it, and it still does bring tears to the eyes. The families grief and anger must have been unimaginable.
There was a lot of criticism of the media at the time. I recall complaints of the media, with all their equipment and cables, actually getting in the way of rescuers. There was a sense of "if you are not there to help, then please stay away"

1:55 It never occurred to me before, but the Queen was queen of several countries over which Mrs Thatcher had no authority. Mrs Thatcher managed to pitch the Queen's loyalty to one of the countries (the UK) of which she was head of state against her loyalty to other countries of which she was head of state. Mrs. Thatcher was trying to be more British than the Queen, and the Queen just wasn't having it.

'The Crown' should reflect reality. Let the Queen & Prince Philip's lives of service remind everyone of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British monarchy is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia, have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy is an important one.
Of course the Queen & Prince Philip had their failings as parents, and Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in everybody's lives.

Churchill’s concealing from his country and Queen that he was ill and remaining as PM in spite of his declining health was shocking and made me think less of him. Other shocking events: Charles stating support for Wales in the speech he delivered in Welsh at his investiture as Prince of Wales, Elizabeth’s coldness towards Charles and the complete disregard for his personally feelings and desires in terms of university and marriage. (I believe both he and Diana were victims of the institution in their marriage as well as being responsible for going through with it when they knew their relationship wasn’t working, and her for naively pursuing him.)

In fact Churchill was not just physically ill, in the last year or two of his time in office he was clearly deeply in the throes of Alzheimer's - even more so than Reagan was. By the end (some years later) Churchill could not recognise anyone. I liked the scene where Churchill chided the painter for an unflattering painting of him - Churchill "You are cruel!" Painter: "yes, because old age is cruel!"

This is a wonderful television show. Its entertainment! That being said for those of us that didn't grow up in the UK and had to learn things via world history...there is an enormous amount of information that was omitted and or misconstrued by the writers for entertainment purposes. Based in what I learned about the Imperialist culture of the UK and how the family had to conform and change in order to survive they didn't change on a fundamental level as individuals. Being an individual was not wanted and if individualism was hinted it was stamped out.
