    • @pdruiz2005
      @pdruiz2005 Год назад +12

      This is clearly fictional. Prime Ministers get protocol sheets to understand what exactly they're getting themselves into when they visit a royal palace or the royal hunting lodge at Balmoral. Thatcher IRL would've been told through the protocol sheet what to bring in terms of clothing, what to wear for what occasion, and where to sit and not to sit (or work). The servants would've also told her what to do and not left her high and dry like the servants here do.

    • @paulscott2037
      @paulscott2037 Год назад +10

      @pdruiz2005 chances are you are very right about Thatcher's preparedness, but it is fairly well documented that she hated going to Balmoral and referred to it as like being in Purgatory. And the somewhat strained relationship between her and Her Majesty is also pretty well known about so while how it's shown in the show likely is not true to real life events, I think it probably does do a good job of showcasing Thatcher's feelings towards it and the Royal Family.

    • @pdruiz2005
      @pdruiz2005 Год назад +4

      @@paulscott2037 Thatcher probably hated all the useless and overly-complex rules on the protocol sheets she was given. And then having to follow these rules mindlessly for days on end. She was known to be a strict, unrelenting workaholic. For a workaholic, these rules could get mighty annoying pretty quickly since they impede productivity and doing meaningful work right here and now.

    Before Princess Anne's interrogation she warms the audience up by singing "Star Man" to herself in the car. It gets funnier from there. As well, the "punch line" from Princess Margaret after Thatcher leaves Balmoral "I thought I was very nice"--truthfully that's Margaret at her best behavior. In the same season, although this is a bit dark, Elizabeth questioning why Diana wants William with her on their trip to Australia. She and the Queen Mother both question why a baby would be a "stabilizing influence" and Elizabeth argues that when she went on tour to Australia she left the kids at home for five. Anne looks PO-ed and about to let out one of her sharpest barbs yet and Margaret looks at her like "I got you kiddo" and asks Elizabeth if she thought that that might have had consequences. And Elizabeth obliviously answers "of course, the tour was a triumph!"

    And I was surprised when liz says "which parent would openly admit to having a favourite child" .. I was like your dad did... the whole "pride and joy - Elizabeth is my pride but Margaret is my joy" thing...

      When one child is the pride and the other is the joy, which is the favorite?

    • @felicityanne979
      @felicityanne979 6 месяцев назад

      @mortimerbrewster3671 you could interpret this in many ways, but my interpretation is that "joy" is the favourite. Pride isn't always a good thing and the use of the word "but" can suggest that King George VI is happier and enjoys Princess Margaret's character and interests over Princess Elizabeth's.

    • @mortimerbrewster3671
      @mortimerbrewster3671 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@felicityanne979 My initial thought was as you stated but the more I thought about it, coming from not just a father but also a king, I was leaning towards pride. That's actually why I think it's the perfect answer if being pressed to give one.
      You may take joy out of someone or something but I think being able to take pride out of someone or something is greater. Especially when that person you took pride in ended up with an enduring legacy that dwarfed her father's. He raised her to be ready for a daunting responsibility and he, no doubt, knew she would excel and exceed his expectations. Joy is easy; proud is an accomplishment.

Charles mockingly points out that Andrew is the second son and will always get less attention than Charles and his family. The phrase “impressively cunty” has now become part of my family’s vernacular after watching Charles rip into his siblings with the “never be king” spiel

    the documentary was a HUGE hit in England- there was an intermission and the number of toilets flushing at that exact moment caused plumbing back ups through out the country.

    one of the funnier parts is in the war of determination scene, where if you watch, you'll see the number of men at thatcher's desk increase with each option!! and they get increasingly more stressed/in disbelief about the whole situation every time

    I could never feel sorry for PM Thatcher for feeling out of place. I wonder if I would feel out of place singing ‘Ding Dong, the witch is dead’ at her funeral.

    The funniest thing was when the guy broke into her bedroom and told her that Margaret Thatcher was going to put the queen out of work.

    The Queen is 3 years older than Jackie. HM was born in 1926; Jackie was born in 1929.

      Jackie Kennedy smoked a pack or more of cigarette’s a day and died of lung cancer when she was still relatively young. The Queen never smoked because of her father’s smoking and cancer and she also made Philip quit smoking and they both lived decades longer than Jackie, basically as long a life as someone can live, almost to 100. 96 years and 99 years respectively and she was always going to go when her husband died and vise versa. Almost 75 years of marriage and 80 years of being together, yeah… it would be incredibly hard to live without the person you’ve spend basically your entire life with other than childhood. She met him at 14 and vowed to marry him then.

    They realized how they all came off in documentary (when off script) and that is why it’s never been done since! Lol
