Tommy had a very good reason for saying that. The then Prince Edward spent his leave during the war partying with loose women, and the Royal Family had to go to great lengths to hide his bad behaviour. Check out the documentary "Edward VIII's Murderous Mistress".

Man’s a legend. I learned to appreciate many things about the crown that I was ignorant to. Tommy helps guide many Americans on this path as the Queen does herself through the seasons.
Hard man, Lascelles. Born to public service, good school, had the right parents and friends, Guards officer, high status, all the trappings of the British Establishment elite that has ruled for time immemorial etc etc blah blah - but also volunteered and fought in the bloodbath of the Somme, which I believe the series alludes to once or twice.
Tommy Lascelles is the real life version of Alfred: he’s the greatest depiction of a servant I’ve ever seen on television. While you watch the series to see the Queen and her family over the decades, it’s fascinating that characters like Tommy Lascelles are so well depicted.
I've just looked up Pip Torrens and was surprised that I've seen him in so many things. He's one of those actors who dissolves into the role so that you forget _him_ but vividly remember the character.
I absolutely enjoyed Tommy. Properly loyal, properly commanding and properly British. I thought I had had enough of viewing this video. Manifestly not, as I am back for the 10th time or so. Many, many minutes of time spent.....watching.....tick....tick......tick.
From what I know about Tommy Lascelles, the character he was depicted as in The Crown was far from the truth of the man. As private secretary to Edward, Prince of Wales he had the unenviable job of cleaning up after the most famous celebrity of his day who was wholly lacking in good judgment and morals. Lascelles finally had had enough when he chose to resign his position as Edward's minder in 1929. He became secretary to the Governor-General of Canada, Vere Ponsonby, The Earl of Bessborough, in 1931, serving with distinction. Even then, because of his past experience with Edward, he may have been called upon again to deal with a delicate matter caused by the prince some years earlier. My knowledge of that matter informs my opinion that Lascelles was a good, decent and kind person who did his duty like a gentleman, in the best and literal meaning of that word.
He also authored a very powerful convention in the unofficial Constitution of the United Kingdom called the Lascelles Principles in 1950. It outlined the terms in which the Sovereign could refuse to dissolve a government at the PM's request. He wrote these principles in a letter to the Times of London written as Senex (wise old man in ancient Greek). Although never applied, and made obsolete by the Fixed Terms Parliament Act, it limited the power of the PM of the UK to act as a dictator and call a new election if it clearly was not in the interest of the People of the UK to have one.

The greatest liability to a dynasty isn’t outside elements but those within the family and court outliers. Left to their own devices, they’d wallow in their own vices and unrefined morals, fracturing and dividing the court into tribes from petty insults, insulting gestures and policy making, as well as constant problems with succession, causing problems for the rest of the kingdom/country/continent. These people were either the devil on the shoulder with their proximity to power and allowing the RF to do what they want, or unsung heroes keeping the place together with duct tape.
@@MrNuclearturtle This. Half, if not all of the troubles the English (now British) Monarchy has endured since the time of William the Conqueror was brought up on by family and/or their extended relatives. The Anarchy, the civil war Henry II faced and the Wars of the Roses, being such prolific if not defining examples.
how quickly do you suppose Tommy would have got Victoria back to work after Albert’s death - what kind of exchanges would he have had with that household - just imagine Tommy doing same job hundred years earlier 😉🇨🇦🙏
Pip Torrens tore it up, fantastic actor and born to play Tommy Lascelles.
Pip Torrens is absolutely brilliant. If he is in a movie/show/etc I watch it. He never disappoints and always elevates the quality of a show he is in! (I previously had written “Tommy Lascelles is absolutely brilliant…!” 😮 Thank you to 2 commenters for correcting my brain fog!)
You mean Pip Torrens, the actor.
Do you mean Pip Torrens?
The best charactor in the series. Yes he stoled every scene he was in. Wish he could have been in more. Pip killed it!
You, Sir, have performed a great public service. This is like a Christmas present! Thank you!
“Some things can never be forgotten, which of us for example has forgotten the Somme” Tommy is brilliant!
Tommy had a very good reason for saying that. The then Prince Edward spent his leave during the war partying with loose women, and the Royal Family had to go to great lengths to hide his bad behaviour. Check out the documentary "Edward VIII's Murderous Mistress".
That is an EPIC roasting right there.
Hats off to Tommy, who served in that battle while Edward had toured Nazi concentration camps.
Tommy Lascelles portrayal inspired me into putting more effort into my speaking voice. Not to sound like him but to try and be more eloquent and put more thought into how I sound to others.
This man would have dealt with Andrew, Camilla, Charles and Diana, Harry and Meghan with ease.
No he wouldn't. They would have sacked him by then as times changed.
@@mxbx307 Lascelles would’ve sacked the times and change too.
@@barsdogukankarakoyun8798 That’s what they predicted about Diana. Lord Fermoy called her malleable. (He was also her maternal grandfather but don’t let that stop him treating her like a piece of meat.) he said she’ll always do as she’s told. He ate his words. Diana wouldn’t be told and she laughs last.
You realize of course that we don't know how he would have dealt with them because we really don't know how he dealt with the real people represented by these actors.
There were no stenographers or recordings. This is all dramatic license to create a well-rounded story which needs to have people in white hats and people in black hats
@@lizziebkennedy7505 Half, if not most, of the Institution by the time Diana came into the picture did not have even 1/16th of Tommy Lascelles' balls.
If he can condescend, harangue and put into place a former King (Edward VIII), what's some landed gentry's daughter compared to that? Still, Tommy wasn't in the business of being needlessly cruel for no reason. No, if he were still Private Secretary to QEII when Charles was fit for marrying, Camilla would never have come within 2KM of Charles, Diana would never ever be considered and Tommy would have Charles marry the Mountbatten girl he was originally meant to, even if that meant gripping Charles by the neck and dragging him down to Westminster Abbey himself...metaphorically, of course.
"I thought that was the point of owning a newspaper" ...excellent!
I like this dude. He is stoic, dutiful can be a bit cold but there's a reason why. Running a country is not like running a lemonade stand.
Which of us for example has forgotten the Somme?
A high quality burn that I would use constantly if more people today knew of the battle of the Somme.
If I ever get my proposed Harry Potter TV series off the table, Pip Torrens would be my choice for Bartemius Crouch.
Yes! Having said that, going by the original character remit - according to Jason Isaacs - Pip Torrens would make a great Lucius Malloy too 😮😂
The man elevates condescension to an art form. Stone cold. Just imagine him dealing with Charles and Camilla, Harry and Megan.
What a great video. Pip was outstanding in this role, especially the scene not on here where he tells the Queen exactly what Edward did leading up to ww2.
We need a Tommy in these dark times.
3:06 - The look that says "You're lucky we're in a church or this would end very badly for you".
That's extraordinarily accurate.
The ultimate consigliere.
The Palace needs people like Tommy these days. When all the all old courtiers died off things have gotten measurably worse for the RF.
... Adds "manifestly not" to my regular phrases.
I love the line about not knowing whose wife plays tennis with whom. Seeing Pip Torrens also play a nervous, ingratiating BBC broadcaster in Darkest Hour shows what terrific range he has.
Those who are interested should read his diary "King's Counsellor". ..a fascinating book particularly the entries during WWII...
Just finished reading it. Excellent book.
As much as I hate to admit it, We need Tommy today more than ever!!! Not only did he keep the Royal family in line and protected, but he also made sure everyone around him was in order, the Palace was clean, and everyone respected him when he walked in. Just think if Tommy were alive today and saw what happened to the Monarch with the Prince Harry scandal and Charles being crowned. Tommy would have to clean house!!!!:)
One of the best scenes, when Elizabeth was having second thoughts about forgiving E Viii, and Tommy tell her the real truth, giving Ed that he deserve 👏
Yes. That's one of the best scenes in the series.
Man’s a legend. I learned to appreciate many things about the crown that I was ignorant to. Tommy helps guide many Americans on this path as the Queen does herself through the seasons.
Read his diaries. Fascinating.
I wonder how he would have handled the Meghan and Harry situation 😂
He was my favorite in the early seasons
Pip Torrens owned every single scene he was in.♥️
Other than Claire Foy as the Queen, he was my favourite character in The Crown series. Clarity. The place could use some now.
"There are multiple reports you've eaten meat with a salad fork. I'll expect your resignation first thing."
Just started watching The Crown, what a brilliant actor, best actor in the show.
I think he was one of my reasons to keep watching The Crown hehhe
"I'm on my knees with gratitude..." *glares*
Tommy was one of my favorites. He was a straight-shooter and didn’t bs around.
"I'm on my knees with gratitude" was so flawlessly delivered it just takes my breath away! Pip Torrens was priceless in this role.
The actor who played him is absolutely superb . Top notch
Now, this is a true English gentleman protecting his Queen and country - totally cold, ruthless and determined - whilst being awfully polite.
Just started watching the crown and he’s the character that binds it all together within the show, very talented actor.
I've just looked up Pip Torrens and was surprised that I've seen him in so many things. He's one of those actors who dissolves into the role so that you forget _him_ but vividly remember the character.
If Tommy was alive today, the Royal family would have been sooo different. What a guy.
Oh how he enriched The Crown! He’d make a lovely Scar in The Lion King.😂
The way he delivered his lines was epic
I wish this actor played Alfred Pennyworth
Probably my favorite character in the series. He’s terrific in this role.
There is a scene where he has an entire toy soldier battlefield that he’s totally lording over…
My favorite character in The Crown. "Stiff upper lip" in human form.
One of his children died in November 2020 and another one is still alive. Wonder what they thought of his portrayal in the show (if they watched it).
@@mxbx307 His son predeceased him, which was a great unhappiness to him.
“I’m on knees with graditutte.”
ROSETED
Tommy was the embodiment of duty incarnate and it's ire when not properly served.
"Manifestly not...." his mastery of the King's English is something to behold...
Fantastic acting. A true professional. He made you hate and admire the character at the same time.
People need someone like him once in a while. Is it strange that he seems like a savior?
his voice is so pleasing to the ears
Tommy and his train and mini battle figurines were adorable
And in his free time he reads the book "the campaigns of Napoleon"🤣
"Tommy, I have a secret."
"You'll have to narrow that down."
There is no shortage of salt with this man
I gotta admit, those old time posh guys like Tommy definately do have a style of dressing and talking that I find very cool
