Rear Differential Fluid change on 2019 2020 ACURA RDX (3rd Gen) maintenance A6

- Key Steps:
1) jack up the vehicle but make sure its LEVEL. This can also be done on the ground because its an Suv. Not as comfortable, but possible.
2)make sure car is cool so you don’t burn yourself on hot fluid or exhaust.
3)unscrew FILL PLUG first.
4)place pan under drain plug and unscrew DRAIN PLUG. Let fluid drain until it stops.
5)replace DRAIN PLUG along with a new crush washer and tighten.
6)fill new DPSF fluid thru fill hole until fluid starts to come back out of the fill hole.
7)replace the fill plug with the old crush washer and hand tighten gently.
8)start the car and let it idle in park mode for a minute or two.
9)remove fill plug and top off the fluid.
10)replace the fill plug along with a new crush washer and tighten.

Just followed your video. Thank you. I will make it easier for others. No need to jack up the vehicle to replace the rear differential fluid. Spare tire removal is simple and required for those that have one. (I followed your recommendation to start and idle the vehicle and then recheck, but I cannot see any reason why it would make a difference. You are simply draining the fluid and replacing it. I measured what was drained and it was the same quality that I replaced before it overflowed from the filler plug.) Again that you for the video.
I went to Acura dealer bought some rear differential fluids. They sold me Honda brand instead of Acura and 2 washers for has different thicknest. I know Honda is the same company but at least they should told me, return it got my money back. Bought somewhere else cheaper. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Torque spec is 35#-ft (47 N-m) for both fill and drain plugs.

35 foot pounds both fill and drain for the diff. 30 foot pounds for the engine oil drain plug. Info straight from Acura technician.

Thanks! I'll do my own. For AWD there's also the transfer case. Is that about as easy? And also the transmission fluid change. I used to change the trans fluid on a previous RDX but this transmission doesn't allow a drain and refill,,,I think.

On the Oil Change, you absolutely DO NOT have to use an OEM oil filter. This is not a Honda/Acura requirement. The 0W-20 Oil (API SN Plus) is a requirement
The car is leased, so yes I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. Because if something serious happens and the car ends up in a dealership and they notice there is an aftermarket filter on there, I’m in some trouble.
What mileage are you getting between oil changes and the rear diff code coming on?
I am guessing this diff oil change is for the AWD model right? My 2019 is the Advanced 2 WD and no mention with 11K on it about diff oil change. Just picked it up yesterday after the 3rd oil change ( only drive about 5K a year).
I’m in a similar situation…I skipped this but I’m not sure if I should have.
I’m curious and maybe soMeone knows the answer: bought the 2019 BASE SH-AWD 9/2018 and I have less than 11k miles on it. Just had the B6 code serviced (A6 was in Jan 2021) & they asked if I wanted this fluid changed. I didn’t see the need due to the mileage…should I though?
the number 6 refers to rear diff fluid. did you go to the dealer or a regular mechanic? dealer should not ask you if you want your rear diff fluid changed, they should tell you it needs to be done... if the light comes on, its been the proper mileage for it needed to be changed. UNLESS, the previous person didn't reset the 6 on the system.
A means change engine oil. B means change oil AND filter PLUS check a bunch of other wear and tear stuff. The numbers mean subitems, in this case being rear diff fluid.

Fwd cars don’t have a rear differential.
Resetting the maint light is easy. Just go thru the settings on the dash.
Can you tell me the diameter of the hose and spout?

Had it for a little over 2 years. Still like brand new. Literally… brand new. Only complaint is a squeak that comes and goes in the headliner. But I think it may be due to adding a roof rack and tightening ladders on it. Def a car worth getting. Especially enjoyable if you are a car person and one who loves hondas. Surprisingly quick for a small 2.0 in a big car.
Mine is a 2019 Base AWD and I love it. No issues in the 3 years I’ve owned it. There’s a noticeable difference bw the FWD & AWD … to me the AWD handles so much better.
1. Do you have a link for that filler tube?
2. Are there jack points for lifting the front end and the rear end? i.e., jack the entire front for placing both front jack stands.
No link for the tube. They sell em in literally any autozone.
Not sure about the jackpoints. I forgot. Im sure there are.
Okay, I located the front and rear jack points. This allows lifting the entire front or entire rear, making it easy to place jack stands.
My owners manual says use Acura DPSF ll Sort of confusing.
Agreed. The online discussion says that DPSF II is only available in Japan and maybe one other country -- not US./Canada, and to use the DPSF.
Notice you were almost at 14K miles. Is this done every 14K?
15k the first time, then every 30k after that, or when the MM says to. If you are driving a lot a very low speed in mountainous areas, or towing: 7.5k miles the 1st time, then every 15k. The MM doesn't know about severe use, so you just have to remember to do it on the shorter schedule.
does the maintenance code reset itself or do you have to do it yourself?
You have to do it.

My “6” light came on at 11k miles. Is that normal? I have a 19 ASPEC RDX model as well.
yeah, all the indicator lights are based on mileage, not sensors. So its not like anything really triggers it. its more of a counter. your 6 came on at 11k but im sure it was in grey small letters... meaning that is what will be due when your oil level goes down to 0%. Thats when all service items are due. Keep in mind that the longer you prolong doing the called for service, and the longer it takes you to reset the indicators back... you're throwing off future maintenance progressively.
vadim r gotcha! I had the service done about 2 wks ago. Cost $250 for oil change, tire rotation and the rear differential fluid change. 😒😒😒

My a6 light came on i have less than 6k miles
The dealer wana charge $225 to do that

Well… tell that to honda if you know better than them. You don’t need to change your oil at 3k either but people still do it.

Let’s see, you have a 45 thousand dollar car and your going to risk voiding your 4 year 50 thousand mile warranty by trying to save on certified maintenance. I have a 2021 Acura RDX advanced and wouldn’t even consider doing the maintenance.
Its ok if you don’t see eye to eye with everyone. If you wouldn’t even consider doing it, why are you watching this video?
We clearly aren’t the same type of person. Some people are comfortable around cars and some aren’t. This procedure is no more difficult than an oil change. Which btw as easy as it sounds, “certified technicians” still manage to mess up. Whoever owns this car after my lease is up should consider themselves extremely fortunate that a honda-head of over 20 years took care of this, instead of a “certified technician” who just considers their job, “just a job”.
And its $49k.
Have receipts for the right parts, write it up formally like a shop would, and you will not have any warranty issues on simple procedures like this one. I've had variable quality of service from dealers over the years (and from myself on occasion - lol).
A trained monkey could do any of the fluid changes. I can do both the transmission and differential is about three hours while lolly-gagging. Just make sure you use the right fluids. I DO buy the fluids from Acura and I keep receipts. They cannot void your warranty for performing your own maintenance if you use the right fluids and don't otherwise screw it up.
