Thanks for the tour Johnny, very impressed with how you've made such a small space work so well in producing some pretty large projects! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! Got to make it work
Johnny, We all have to work in the shop space we have. I like your ingenuity with your shop.
Thanks for sharing.
Good tour, thanks. You covered most of what I deal with setting up my tent shop every spring. No walls to hang stuff on, my problem to.
Glad you found this helpful!
The foam insulation in the tent is brilliant. It gives me second thoughts about the round top version that houses my shop. I had an excavation contractor put down a shale pad and built the floor on posts and pads. It moved about 1/4 inch in its first year and hasn't moved since. When the fabric wears out I plan to build a real shed on the platform that can be wired, insulated and heated.
Thanks Johnny, what a great little space you have. I've also got limited space in my "shop", and you've definitely given me some ideas for how to make the most of what I've got.
Keep up the good work
Awesome!! I'm glad I can help
Thanks for the tour. I dont usually watch shop tours as they tend to drag on for a lot of time and dont really say too much. I was very curious knowing where you live and seeing what appeared to be one of the outside storage units made of canvass, I am extremely impressed in how you do it. Also enjoy your Kumiko video’s Thanks so much for sharing.
This was a great shop tour! It's amazing how well you have everything organized with so many tools in such a small space. I like your broom closet. 😁
Haha thank you! The key is for everything to have its place and a place for everything
Thank you for the tour! The carport is a clever idea
Thanks James. Glad you enjoyed it
thanks for the tour Johnny. it's very nice workshop, so organized and it wasn't easy as you don't have wall to put stuff on.👍
Thank you. Yea because of that it has to stay organized
I currently work in a carport with just a handful of machines and a plan to move indoors to a large shed that needs some modifications. This was really inspiring! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching Jane! I'm glad you found it inspiring. Keep at it!!
I love this video! I have half a garage to use and to see all that you've created inspires me!
Thanks so much!! Glad you found it helpful
Amazing job setting up a shop,in a tent. I also have a small shop in my basement that’s roughly 13’ x 22’
This is such a great idea!
Thanks!! Glad you like it
I can't even imagine not having wall space to hang things on...... but yet you have shown me how.... thanks!
It's definitely a challenge and I would love to have that wall space. However, keeping tools in drawers and cabinets has the benefit of keeping them dust free
Thanks for the tour and makes me feel like I need to step it up in my 300 sq ft shop that has walls.
Glad you liked it! Walls help if you can use them
Very nice and creative workshop!
Thank you!
Great use of space.
Thanks Kris! It's all about organization and I'll be making improvements soon
Brilliant
Thanks for sharing that
Merci mec👍
I have a small area in the basement of a house I rent that I am using as a woodworking room that I sectioned off. Nice ideas for these tools.
Thanks! Glad you like it
Nice job bro.. keep up the hustle
Thank you!!
I’m curious about security. I don’t think I’d be able to sleep at night...how do you keep it secure?
Now I feel bad for bitching to my wife that my heated 2 car garage is too small. You put out some beautiful work in such a small space.
Thanks man! Gotta be creative with the space you have
Excellent job we were getting ready to move and there was no basement space so I did explore that same idea the price seemed reasonable but the base of the space was very uneven thanks for the idea of laying bricks.
Hey glad you got something out of it. I've been in this space for 2 years now. The roof had some leaks a couple months ago so I put a big tarp over it. I think it was birds. Other than that the space is great and the tent is high quality
I smiled watching your video. Your ingenuity and creative thinking shines. You say this has been your shop for a couple of years and that amazes me. I would like to have you visit my “shed”. I’m not sure if it will scare you or inspire you. I began with a 10’ x 20’ Tent carport. It served as winter storage of outdoor tools and such and shop. A small branch went through the tent roof and everything got soaked. I tied in some 4x4 posts and built a proper roof. Since i was adding the 4x4 posts i decided to add a false front with a barn door, lockable for security. That lead to walls which lead to an addition of another 10 ‘ x 20’ of space. The original tent frame still is tied in. The entire structure sits on cinder blocks is wired, getting solar and water installed. 2 immediate questions come to mind. How did you restrain the want, need and desire to expand? & How do you deal with moisture and subsequent rust issues. (I live in Ontario Canada, cccccold) Excellent work BTW.
Thanks! It seems like you have a nice sized shop built out. As far as your questions, I would love to expand my shop space but I really don't NEED to right now. I keep my shop clean and organized which allows me to make larger projects and multiple projects at once. Moisture and rust isn't much of an issue for me and to be honest there isn't anything I do other then regular maintenance to my tools.
Very interesting. I have a 10x20 tent over concrete (one long side next to the side of the house and the other next to perimeter cedar fence) and near the garage. I use it to wheel tools stored in the garage to work outside to keep garage space dust free and for cars, etc. I have thought about adding a raised floor to allow rain to drain to keep tent shop dry. But have been concerned with heat, moisture and cold weather on occasion (in TX) and the effects on tools and wood. What is your experience here?
I haven't seen much of an effect from the moisture and temperature. Both the tools and wood have been working normally
How did you solve the power to your shop? I also have 10x20 portable carport that I use for my workshop. Great video!
I have two heavy duty extension cords running from different circuits. Each one connects to a power strip and those are the outlets in the shop
Hey Johnny, Could we hear more about the floor? I’ll be setting up a similar shop later this month. Did you line the entire floor with bricks first? Or are there just a few bricks to support each pallet?
Awesome! I used about 9 bricks per pallet and placed them in the more critical areas. I don't think lining the entire ground with bricks is necessary. It's important to level all the bricks as much as possible to try to get your floor level. I also pitched the ground under the pallets so water can run off and not accumulate under the floor. Also, I tried to get all the same thickness of pallets. That helps a ton
My wife and I just bought a piece of land to build our home on and I found this in looking for tool storage solutions... I'm highly considering a setup like this now in my 12x24 ShelterLogic. I paid attention as best I could but did not hear you talk about humidity. Have you had any issues with humidity or tools rusting in the tent shop?
That's awesome! Good luck with the house build. Most of the year I didn't have a humidity or rust issue. There were a couple times in the summer were I noticed rust would form a bit quicker than usual but nothing too crazy. I'm not sure where you're located but you might have different results. That being said, I still think this setup is a great short term/budget friendly solution
Nice video Johny. Just wondering have you had any leaks or issues with the tarp?
I did get some pinholes after about a year. I think it was just from the sun beating on it. I ended up upgrading to their more durable cover and it's working great so far
@@JTWoodworks so I guess I should just go with the better grade fabric right from the start. Nice setup setup btw.
It depends on how long you plan to have it. I would recommend it if it's within your budget
@@JTWoodworks I'm thinking to install a shelter in the rear of my welding shop for when I paint my railings because I'm currently using a small area in my shop and i don't want the paint oversparay getting into my equipment. Most likely I am going to buy one of these shelters and fab a wall on the backside with an exhaust fan.
It seems like this would be a good option for you. That's a good idea for the exhaust fan
Hi Johnny. I'm looking to build a similar woodshop to yours, tent and all, and I'm wondering if you've had any issues with security. Is your shop in a pretty secluded spot on your property? Do you have alarms of any kind? Are you ever worried about your equipment being stolen? I'm not sure, security-wise, if this would work for me, so I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the topic. Thanks!
Location definitely plays a large role when it comes to security. Being in a good neighborhood, being friends with your neighbors, and choosing the right area on your property is a plus. Having some sort of alarm/camera system would help for emergencies. You may also want to consider lining the inside of the shop space with solid walls if you can
How does it hold up to the wind?
Holds up just fine. You can stake it into the ground if you need to
Is it water proof??
Yup! The top lasted about two years before it got tiny holes (I think from UV exposure) then I stretched a tarp over it and that also lasted two years
@@JTWoodworks awesome great to hear I just got one to manufacture surfboards in!!!
Nice!! I hope it works well for you. It served me well
Why didn’t you purchase a shed and use that as your shop?
I would have done that for something more long term but going into it I knew it would be a temporary solution
