That part about freeing your mind by having good habits so you don’t need to decide the little things every time is great. As a general contractor and finish carpenter I got up really early, read, wrote, ate, loaded up and got to jobsite early before anyone else. That gave me peace and quiet to walk through and plan my work mentally with no distractions. That way as the day progressed I just had to execute the tasks instead of decide. I had already done the job in my head. It made my work life enjoyable, and efficient.
“Love/Hate” equals balance. For myself, Integrity- Doing the Right Thing When No One Is Watching- has been the cornerstone of my self discipline journey. Second to this- Humility, Remaining Teachable. Thank you for your time and dedication Essential Craftsman. I will always carry you in my thoughts/ memories and hold you in high esteem.
I think with humility you mentioned one of the most important part for anyone to improve and develop. Staying aware, that there is always something to be taught and staying aware to learn the things you come upon, be it from others doing things differently or by experiencing things that work better or don´t work at all. No matter if someone has decades of experience under his belt or it is just an apprentice, you may learn from anyone. and don´t be shy to show others your experience so they can learn. Also when working in a team, this is sometimes even harder, make use of others more capable of certain things than yourself and admit that others may do certain things better than yourself. That does not only help you to improve, but get the best out of working in a team. There is no shame in failing once in a while, it is just another oportunity to learn. On the other hand, although it might be a noble idea to strive for perfection, at some point trying to reach perfection is the enemy of getting things done properly. Learning that good enough sometimes is the only goal than can be achieved, and trying to do better just may make things worse. The day you think you know it all and there is no one you may learn something from, you are in a mindset that will make you fail hard, as you may not even realize anymore that you are failing.
Bringing truth and fatherly advice well into your age is much appreciated by us a generation after you. Thank you for the legacy you're leaving behind.
You're a great man. I've been watching essential craftsmen for years now, and you inspire me to be a better person, You are very emotionally intelligent and a great role model. Thank you, Sir
Consistency is primary habit formation 101. We all struggle with it hard. That's the humanity within us. Habits form through consistent, day-after-day commitment to ourselves. If we don't have commitment to ourselves, that's a big area to start looking and asking why. Easier said than done.
If you want it bad enough, you'll break the bad habits and develop the discipline and will power needed to move forward in the right direction that's needed for yourself and your family. 4:24 Anyone who has spent time, or heck even driven by, some of the more dangerous urban areas can tell you that relative poverty does not lead to an ethos of delayed gratification in many, many people.
That was very well spoken, and I couldn’t agree more, with a hectic lifestyle of kids, family, work, visitors it seems sometimes hard to form good progressive habits or even have the will power to start them sometimes, especially with a young family and everyone is working or at school.
Yeah, like my family, the only person I can rely on is my wife she is an honorable woman. I thank God for sending her to me she is my friend, and my wife and I love her with every ounce of my flesh.
Thank you sir. In my experience it's possible to be both over-disciplined and under-disciplined at the same time. Those unhelpful extremes are not either/or but can work together to prevent the proper balance of discipline and responsiveness. We are all works in progress.
I do the physical stretching, push ups, crunches, etc. daily. I don't work out, but limber up. There is a rhythm for that, and takes maybe 10 -15 minutes each morning. I don't do the physical exercises if I feel ill. But probably 355-60 days a year I do them for the last 27(?) years. I'm 55 now. Well, all that started because I had a back injury. I never sought medical help for that injury. After my injury, I got a book about healing back pain (before the internet). Slowly, over the years, I feel better than I did in my 20's. I think I am stronger now than when I was young. The reason why I do the exercises for a few minutes each day, is because I feel good after I do them.
This is the most honest human talk about discipline and work ethic. Thanks for not spouting off like these gurus constantly do about their ultra discipline and look how much better I am than you! 😂
You are not wrong! I would add an adage to it though .... It is good to reassess yourself periodically! This comes from personal experience, but this might not be the right time and place for that story ;o) You have two eyes, two ears and one mouth for a good reason! ..... or as we say here in Northern England (UK) Hear all. See all. Say Nowt!
I have a bad habit of beating myself up for not doing stuff I planned to do. Woodworking is a hobby and there’s stuff I plan to do all the time. But if I’m tired from work or my interest pivots to something else that day, I beat myself up for not doing what I planned. Same goes for music if I don’t practice when I planned to. I wish I could shut that part of my brain off and just relax!

God Bless you Sir. You've opened up my thinking!
Great insight, separate wants and needs.
That was very well spoken, and I couldn’t agree more, with a hectic lifestyle of kids, family, work, visitors it seems sometimes hard to form good progressive habits or even have the will power to start them sometimes, especially with a young family and everyone is working or at school.
Most people simply want to use and then take for granted a man with knowledge and skills. They are nowhere to be found when that man ever needs help.
Yeah, like my family, the only person I can rely on is my wife she is an honorable woman. I thank God for sending her to me she is my friend, and my wife and I love her with every ounce of my flesh.
I just finished reading Atomic Habits and this lines up well with that book. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Thank you sir. In my experience it's possible to be both over-disciplined and under-disciplined at the same time. Those unhelpful extremes are not either/or but can work together to prevent the proper balance of discipline and responsiveness. We are all works in progress.
I love your truck. What a tank.
Thank You Scott for this video! Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend with your family. I love your channel. Keep up the great work!
Excellent discussion Scott. Definitely food for thought for all of us. Thank you.
Great message, Amen.
Thank you, sir! This was a master class!
This channel is so good.
This is the most honest human talk about discipline and work ethic. Thanks for not spouting off like these gurus constantly do about their ultra discipline and look how much better I am than you! 😂
It’s a lot of our self’s in it then gol where we going to.
Praise the lord!
@Scott
THANK YOU !🙏
Great point about good habits. Makes decision making much easier. Kind of puts you on auto pilot.
Scott: sounds like you & I learned the same lessons. Proverbs 19:21. Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.
Thankyou Scott
Thank you for your wisdom!!!
Amen Brother! Preach On !!!
You are not wrong!
I would add an adage to it though .... It is good to reassess yourself periodically!
This comes from personal experience, but this might not be the right time and place for that story ;o)
You have two eyes, two ears and one mouth for a good reason! ..... or as we say here in Northern England (UK) Hear all. See all. Say Nowt!
Much love to ya!
Thank you!!!
Fantastic message 🙏🏼
I have a bad habit of beating myself up for not doing stuff I planned to do. Woodworking is a hobby and there’s stuff I plan to do all the time. But if I’m tired from work or my interest pivots to something else that day, I beat myself up for not doing what I planned. Same goes for music if I don’t practice when I planned to. I wish I could shut that part of my brain off and just relax!
Great message!
