Fun fact: That guitar he is playing here is his #1 famously called "The Black Strat". He has owned it since 1970 replacing his original standard black Stratocaster that was stolen just weeks into owning that one. The Black Strat has gone thru some modifications over the years to get the sound David wanted but still the same instrument.
He recently sold it (2019) thru Christies auction house along with a large collection of his other guitars including a powder blue Fender Stratocaster with the serial number 00001, the first production Strat from Leo Fender himself.
So, The Black Strat, a 1969 Fender Stratocaster which David Gilmour used to record Pink Floyd albums “The Dark Side of the Moon,” "Animals", “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall,” and what he played in this show and many others sold for $3,975,000, some say it was actually 4.1 million - either way, a new world record for a guitar at an auction. The buyer was Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.
$21.5 Million total was raised for the whole collection of 126 instruments.
    It all was for charity.

Hello Ryan and George, as one reactor to another, this is the first time our paths have crossed. I have been making videos for over four years, originally inspired by you guys and others. Thank you!
The clamour of noise from people suggesting the "Pulse" version is deafening! I'm super glad you have found another version to listen to. This is David Gilmour solo, not Pink Floyd, and he is playing in an ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy. Pink Floyd originally played there in the early 70s but with no audience. So this is quite special. That's Chuck Leavell from The Allman Brothers singing the verse parts. Everyone has already said how special DG is as a guitarist, I have nothing further to add, but do if you have time listen to the "Pulse" version. The solo on there is the greatest of all time. Truth. You could get a THIRD video out of this song!!!!
    Cheers, Jim

If you saw where this show is actually being played you wouldn't believe it. Its at an ancient outdoor amphitheater in the ruins of Pompeii, Italy and the significance here is that no one really plays here except Pink Floyd! This was Dave returning back to a spot where they had one of their most iconic performances playing this 'venue' back in 1972, in the middle of the day, with no audience at all (except for the ghosts of the tragedy it would seem) and its some of their most brilliance work, most notably the epic song "Echoes" One of my favorite compositions of music across all spectrums. Pink Floyd have always been about the making the best quality sound possible but how they did it in this place is must have taken an incredible team. Watch the 1972 video to really get why it was special when Dave returned there for this show!!

Who convinced them to react to this version over the Pulse version which is the absolute pinnacle of live versions and seeing what they said about what they were told in the studio version reaction, it makes me question who they have giving them this information, clearly not an actual informed Floyd fan, it seems like the kind of Floyd fans who watched the movie The Wall and suddenly became an expert on not just The Wall but Pink Floyd themselves

@@ManWithoutThePants I'm not commenting on his solo. He hasn't lost anything in the guitar playing area. At this point (and at that point) he has with his vocals though. That's to be expected obviously. And his vocalists doing Roger Waters parts just frankly isn't very good. It's just not a great version to pick. And it's sad that for some people who watch this channel and are hearing a live version of the song for their first time, this is the first impression they will get.

This song is the peak of musicianship. There is no words for feel that is in this masterpiece. I was in Pompeii last year, and visited this arena. If you know history of this place and in combination with this music, it is glorious. Cant imagine how spectacular it had to be to witness this performance live. I would say one of greatest performances ever. Say what you want, Gilmour is true master. Just my 5 cents :D

The calmest/chill, I’ve ever been and always will be, is listening to this solo. It’s so much different (& longer) than other versions. Look at all those ppl, staring at them-singing their own song back with them…& not a soul speaks or looks elsewhere but at this extraordinary moment where David Gilmore wails his solo…the longer but epic version. That had to be the best 7-9 minutes of the audience’s lives! And everyone around that city, within the stadium’s view, could hear it. Magical sensory overload in my opinion 🥰🎶🎸

Pink Floyd is/was one of those rare gifts that always sound better live than studio. This video was David Gilmour and his group. Richard Wright who played keyboards has passed in, Roger Waters Bass had quit years before. Nick Mason Drummer was on his own thing. David Still plays and sings. This was 36 years after The Wall was released. I will say I love David's skill and precision for this advanced age, he was in his seventies in his recording. But honestly, as food as this was, the absolute best version, and I know you'll hear it from others, its the 1994 Pulse concert. David,Richard, and Nick were in their prime and simply at their best. Love what yall do guys. Check out Pink Floyd Pulse concert Sorrow, or Keep talking, or the song that followed Numb as they show closer, Run Like Hell!

David knows how to stretch out the ending guitar solo, and yet still leave you wishing it had continued longer. Pretty amazing. This concert was in the actual amphitheatre as built in Pompeii so long ago: _"The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres. It is located in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. [...] Built around 70 BC, the amphitheatre is one of the earliest Roman amphitheatres built of stone"._
A little more history: _"Over a 4-day period in October 1971, Pink Floyd made a concert film at the amphitheatre, titled _*_Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii._*_ David Gilmour, the band's guitarist, returned to perform two concerts at the amphitheatre in July 2016 as part of his Rattle That Lock Tour."_ If you check out the earlier PF movie, it's just Pink Floyd recording at the amphitheatre, there is no concert. But that'll give you images of what the amphitheatre looks like.

It just has felt so short to me, but when I think about it now it's not that short albeit not a long one either. It's just that time flies when he plays it :).
