David Gilmour's voice is amazing, as is his guitar playing. The most popular live performance of this song is from the Pulse concert in 1994. Note: David Gilmour auctioned off his guitars, got $21.5 million, and donated it all to charity.
Playing The Black Strat in the video.
Hi Mary Margaret,
it's the ultimate version for me too 🙏
By the way I just recorded my version of this P.U.L.S.E guitar solo that I, finally, passionately played on a cool '79 Stratocaster Antigua that a friend lent me for that type of sound..If you would watch it, it's the last on my channel...Humbly...🙏😉
@@Ludo_G. I will; thanks!
@@marymargaretmoore9034 Cool, thanks for taking the time to watch! Hoping you liked it ;-) Cheers
@@umfpt oh yes, the one he loves, it loves him too
Generally consider the greatest guitar solo of all time
Absolutely the greatest guitar solos ever....the first and 2nd...👍
Pity he kept talking over the top of it.
You beat me to the punch! Glad I checked the comments, but I knew someone had to have mentioned its ranking in the realm of guitar solos.
Absolutely! A masterpiece.
It is the best live guitar solo .
One of my best friends knows Dave. He hung around Dave a lot through the 70s. He even tried to hire my friend to be his personal chef. If you think Dave is a kind and generous man, which he is, my friend has told me NUMEROUS acts of kindness he performed to help others and it is enough to make you cry. Not only a great musician, but a great man.
I believe you. He has been my rock god for 40 years. I have such a deep admiration for him. Meeting him and listening to him play for hours is definitely high up on my bucket list.
this solo is the equivalent of beethoven's concerto for violin and orchestra. epochal, gigantic, unrivaled, unique, masterpiece. It is the mount everest for guitarists who are serious. And even if they can play it technically, there's one thing you can't learn: feeling.
David Gilmore was 70 years old when he performed at this concert in Pompeii 5 years ago. In 5 more years (2026), I hope he is still performing at age 80. Wouldn’t that be incredible?
i just wish him great health
it doesn't matter if he could still play
just stay healthy and alive
I wish he was my grandad Can you imagine him being your grandad ? I'm 57 he could be my grandad !
He will not play this music in 2026 because he is done with the Pink Floyd name :-( he told in a interview.
@@rockon4853 I'll listen to the man play anything, he's a virtuoso at his instrument
Well, he sold off the guitars. I'm sure Jim Irsay will loan it out to him whenever he asks for the black strat.
I'm not even a fan of Floyd and I still kneel before this legend. The song itself is a journey and the solo is like The Return of the King extended version on top of that. This isn't top tier. It's master level
This is my favorite Pink Floyd song. The guitar solo is one of the best you’ll ever hear.
I told my daughter I want this song played at the conclusion of my funeral. Weird but fitting.
The ONLY drummer that played and SMILED throughout the entire song...must of been in heaven during the guitar solo!!!
Era in paradiso perché suonava a Pompei
Comfortably Numb is on The Wall album. As I said in my other comment (which has disappeared), David Gilmour was the lead guitarist and lead vocalist for Pink Floyd. This is Chuck Leavell singing/speaking (and keyboards); he's also the keyboard player for the Rolling Stones in their later years.
concert at the Pulse is exceptional also....
I like David Gilmour because where he stops vocally he makes you feel his pain with that guitar.
A master class in "emotion music". Like no other
And that is how you make a guitar talk!!!! Nothing like him, in a class of his own. And how in sync the entire band and vocalists were, perfection!!
It’s crazy to think there’s still so many people out there who don’t know this music. Pink Floyd was my fathers favorite band. I was born in 86, so by default I’ve been listening to this band literally my entire life. I was told my parents would throw on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” to get me to fall asleep as a baby. David Gilmour and Stevie Ray Vaughan are the only guitarists made me actually FEEL the solos that they were playing. Great great great job Van. Keep it up good sir.
Cool story- I’m old enuf to be ur parent and been listening to Floyd just like they did!😂
The Guiter God & The greatest band ever..
LIVE PULSE was one of the most iconic combinations of song and lighting ever seen on a stage.
THAT is the version to watch, my friend :)
💯
i actually like pompeii just as much
Grom live 8 is also fire
Nah - Pompeii version is the one... LOL.
this solo should never end
Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that is released when your brain is expecting a reward. I think you mean Dopamine. Yes Pink Floyd does invoke that feeling sometimes.
One of the greatest guitarists to ever grace the Earth.
I saw him perform a lot of his solo songs as well as Pink Floyd classics when he toured in 2016. He came through Chicago, so I wasn't going to miss the chance to see a legendary musician in action. It was an amazing show. David Gilmour is a phenomenal guitarist and singer and Pink Floyd's music evokes a time and place that I was too young to absorb at the time these songs were released (I was 2 years old in 1979 and David Gilmour is the same age as my dad). I am so glad he toured in 2016 and hope he will tour at least one more time (his last tour before 2016 was 10 years earlier, in 2006).
he was 70. this is David as a solo artist, not Pink Floyd. if you want to see Pink Floyd, when they were young, react to Echoes, live at Pompeii, 1971
Thats David Gilmour on the guitar and Pink Floyd concerts are an experience. This song @ the Pulse concert is worth watching. Also check out The Great Gig In The Sky live from the Pulse Concert, it's on the unopened CD you showed.
Great Song from The Wall. The album you got, Dark Side of the Moon is fire beginning to end 🔥
You know that David Gilmour was in Pink Floyd, right? Please also check out an old one; Pink Floyd; song: "Echoes" live at Pompeii 1971, parts 1 and 2. (btw, that's Jimi Hendrix's guitar strap David has on) David also did a great solo album in 2006 called "On An Island." Please check out his song "On An Island." Also, please do Led Zeppelin "In My Time Of Dying" live at Earls Court, 1975. Thanks, Van, you the man!
One of the best guitar solos in rock history. Glad you discovered! This has always been my song to explain what its like to struggle with mental illness.
Oooooo Comfortably Numb. My favorite of the Pink Floyd songs. So happy your doing this one.
Everytime i listen to this song i get goosebumps and iv been listening to them for just over 30 years.
Got to try David Gilmour live at Gdansk for another PF epic Echoes for another masterclass, No one can put more emotion into one note than this man. Not bad for 70.
Earphone's become ear goggles with Floyd 🤯
The vocals on this song were originally done by first by Roger Waters and answered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Later, when Roger quit the band, Richard Wright, the original PF keyboardist, took over the 1st set of vocals on this song, as well as after David had gone solo took the vocal part. Unfortunately Richard died in 2008 of cancer. For this live concert tour, the first verses are sung by keyboardist Chuck Leavell, who's probably best known for his work with The Alllman Brothers Band, Sea Level and The Rolling Stones.
David Gilmour played part of the #purplerain solo during one of his songs in tribute to Prince after he died
Got to dig deep into Pink Floyd; I recommend studio versions of "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"; soul changing music.
My favorite song and band ever!!!
Comfortably numb is on The Wall album.
The dark side of the moon is a fantastic Album, probably the best.
You’re channel just gets better and better. Thanks Van #purplerain
Saw this tour live in Dec2015 at Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre , Brazil.
55 .000 sold out.
I was the only girl right there (front row, ,no seats) ....the rest was guys in their 50,s , 60,s.
EVERYONE of us cried during Comfortably Numb.
That night was THE BEST night of my life .
And now I thank God for the opportunity to live that dream before the covid shit.
Theres a video from that night:
ruclips.net/video/cx_X91a2TFw/видео.html
Nicolle, you wrote all this and still didn't sub!? LOL Every Night I gotta fight to prove my LOVE!!! LOL Hop inside our Discord sometime.
Sir David Gilmour! I think the Rolling Stone mag did him a diss by putting him at 14th in the list of greatest guitarists. My brother loves one line from this from a different perspective. He was a career merchant marine. He said that when you're out at sea for so long and see nothing that there's nothing like seeing another ship's smoke on the horizon. Love this performance. Oh....and #purplerain!
So happy to see young people discover this band. Welcome to the journey... enjoy the rabbit hole.
You have to listen to run like hell, and high hopes.. live in pompeii, I have been a pink floyd fan for 40 yrs, not a day goes past where I dont listen to them . They are food for the soul
Comfortably Numb is from "The Wall" which was released in 1979. David Gilmour is 75 right now (born in '46) and yes, they are an English band. Formed in London in the mid 1960's David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd after the departure of founding member Syd Barrett in 1968.
"Learning To Fly" features some incredible guitar tone and tasty licks from Gilmour and "Wish You Were Hear" shows that he can play acoustic guitar with every bit as much soul as he does an electric. Which isn't easy, I can tell you that for nothin' - Acoustic guitars aren't nearly as forgiving as an electric and mistakes or "clunkers" are obvious.
Now if you're really diggin' the Pink Floyd you might like to try "Atom Heart Mother" and "Animals" "Pigs: Three Different Ones" in particular - Peace!
The amount of info in this comment pleases me. Love to always see Die hard Floyd fans in the comments. You have a great day sir.
The guitar strap David Gilmour is using used to be Jimi Hendrix'. David Gilmour's wife bought it for him for his 60th birthday.
High Hopes (live at Pulse) is the pinnacle of David Gilmour performances
David Gilmore a true legend! Enough said brother!
As a Pink Floyd fan this solo touches my soul everytime!
My absolute favorite performance of this great song.
I watched your zep videos.... and loved your reaction... this is the british invasion.... many blues artists of the 30's to 50's went to england... where the'r music was respected, so you see with Zep, Floyd, Clapton... a sound that renders and displays the influence of those blues artists.... and not to sound racist... they thought... stones included... that to get the real soulful sound they desired.... black back up singers were necessary. I love it... many don't understand that what we called 'rock' back in the day... had a serious soul influence.... robert johnson was revered by zepellin..... we were separated even then when I grew up... with the british invasion 'soul' sound... and the southern rock sound.... interesting what we learn when we really travel the magical highways of music
That black Fender Stratocaster David Gilmour is playing sold for 3.9 million dollars in 2019... he sold a vast amount of his collection... and gave it to a global charity.
They've always had those beautiful voices from Mostly black women. There were two that they used in Dark Side of the Moon that they produced in 1973 that do the background singing beautifully by the way!! Especially in parts of the song "Time"!
In 2006 he played a concert with BB King and BB asked him, "damn kid you sure you weren't born in Mississippi"??
The backup singers from this concert are incredible. Look up Great Gig In The Sky from this Pompeii performance in 2016. My brothers and I saw it in the theater and I cried.
I absolutely love your reactions and appreciate your time Stay blessed brotha
They definitely have that vibe!
This band is a must when on hallucinagens I don't partake much but it's definitely a different world
I partake, and it definitely adds.
Been a PF fan since the 70’s & to this day I still get excited watching their videos, I managed to see their show in the 80’s & still have fond memories 😃
Coming Back To Life and Sorrow from Pulse will blow your mind.
the interesting thing about music is the magic it creates (It connects humanity in countless ways) Its the most powerful thing on the planet!
Your reactions are just so great, I so enjoy them. Always a thumbs up from me! 👍
pink floyds first gig at pompi was back in the days when it was a site of a old roman theater no crowd was allowed in it, ,they played to the ghosts thats died there after the volcano wiped the city out 1000s yrs back, ,the gig was filmed as they played to a empty old refound stage and area ,,they had been playing and recording albums and gigs for 10 years before that at least first gig they did was the ufo club in london as the house band for trippy club 1966
Thank you man I needed this.
1988 Germany Mannheim Maimarkt Open Air - Pink Floyd --- never will forget --- best open air i have ever been too ---best laser and light show --- i was 20 --- now i am nearly 53 --- and when i listen to Pink Floyd the feeling of that concert comes back --- forever edged in my brain and my memories ... fun times
Can't wait for your reaction. In grade school this song caused me so much pain...'nough said. One of my favorite bands that I would play my drums to when I would blast their 🎶!
"ASMR" was the term you were looking for, and you made a good point. That ASMR stuff doesn't work for me, but I guess this song does to me what others say ASMR does for them.
Love the new format!
imagine being there experiencing this masterpiece live
i was !
when he said "this is real music" i couldn't have agreed less
Awesome performance and reaction
#purplerain
I have to agree with Amy, (4 posts down).
You MUST react to Pink Floyd "Echoes" Live at Pompeii 1971 Just to see how good they were closer to their beginnings.
One of my favorite guitarists of all time
Welcome to the spiritual experience of Pink Floyd live...I have seen them twice live. Growing up in Detroit I have seen a LOT of concerts. Floyd is so far in front of every other band live that I have had the privilege to see.
so many years later, and STILL amazing. This song is off their album The Wall if I remember right.
I love how the amphitheater in Pompeii resonates sound like an indoor venue. It was built in BC, and still, today can be used to its fullest.
On a side-note, I've been to Pompeii, walked in that amphitheater. It's beautiful.
After listening to this for 20 years now, and i wasnt even born in the era. I still get goosebumps. Pink Floyd is and will forever be in their own league. One of the absolute most amazing bands ever in history.
nice to see most of the people put their phones down towards the end memories are better kept in the mind
I went to the Purple Rain tour in the Superdome, I was in 7th grade!!! Half the school went. We all paid our regular bus drivers to bring us and pick us up. It was was like $10 a person. We did the same thing for the Duran Duran concert in the Dome around the same time. Darling Nicki was all us guys favorite song and the girls all loved Purple Rain!!
SO many faces melted, so many.
Pink Floyd recorded Echoes in 1972 at the ampitheature in Pompeii, Italy. 45 years later David Gilmour (guitar player) returns to Pompeii for a second time during his 2016 Rattle That lock Tour.
So in the Army I watched Pink Floyd The Wall. I was sober and it was horrible. I watched it drunk, not really any better. Did a hit of Acid, made perfect sense and now I can watch it anytime and go back to the Acid View.
Opens up a 6th sense. When I listen I want so badly to make trails!
David Gilmour doesn't play his guitar he makes love to it.!!!
i can imagine entire rome empire would be so mesmerize if they hear this concert back in the day on pompeii
In no possible way i would have my phone in my hands to live this epic moment!
Yo there is a version of this where after prince died, david gilmour tribute to Prince he switches to purple rain, the lights turn purple then back into comfortably numb and its fiiiirreeeereeree!!!!!!!
Amazing. I would love to have been there live.
do Pink Floyd - Run like hell... from the 1994 Pulse concert... the greatest concert visuals ever!
I absolutely love first reactions to this!
The keyboard player singing is Richard Wright, Gilmour is the guitarist. Both were in Pink Floyd.
Richard is not in this video, he passed away in 2008.
The keyboard player is Chuck Leavell.
I'm 52. I was lucky enough to see them in Manheim West Germany in 1988.
The special effect lighting is superb there music is a out of body experience
saw them live and never went to a live show agin nothing else could compare to their show live.
Pink Floyd is not just a band, it’s an experience
Love the Richard Pryor pic on the wall. GOAT !!!!
I got to see David play this live 4 times. 1980, 84, 06, 16. Everytime I hear it I am amazed at how lucky I was to see it so many times.
Love that poster of Richard behind you... comfortably numb is on The Wall. Oh, and i know those videos you’re talking about! Can’t name it though.I can tell you where David Gilmour’s guitar takes me.... to beyond and back. Is it even possible to pour more feeling and should into a solo? And you’re right about those 3 backup singers... they are always good and fun to watch live.
I'm so glad somebody finally sees this
There is a video here on RUclips where David Gilmour plays Purple Rain right before the Comfortably Numb solo as a tribute to Prince.
The man is in his 70s standing in the Oldest amphitheater on the planet wearing one of Jimi Hendrix guitar straps, he's been singing for more than 2 hrs and finished with this song. Schooling every band, every guitar player on the planet
One of the most legendary guitar solos of all time.
In high school I had to go to bed early, but I played the one you have unopened with headphones on in bed. That whole album was like a movie. And Prince was one of the best guitarists around, which is very tough in the 80s. Might be the biggest decade for solos...
Ypu know he is , talking, poetry about drugs. Wonderfully play. They are the best.
been a floyd fan for over 40 years was at 1 of there concerts in 94 by far the best live concert i was ever at
In an interview with David Gilmour, he was asked about his favorite guitarists, and the one he said just amazes him is Jeff Beck. If you get a chance, check out Jeff Beck's version of Stevie Wonder's "So We've Ended as Lovers" from his "Live at Ronnie Scott's" concert that you can find on video. Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) played in the Yardbirds back in the 60s. If you like drums, the drummer on that album is Vinnie Caliuta, who's an awesome rock jazz and studio drummer.
It’s an altered state of consciousness and the first time that ever happened to me wasn’t on drink or drug but at a party stone sober sitting between 2 huge speakers listening to this song!
🇨🇦
Love your reaction
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Talent at a level we do not see today. Enjoy Pink Floyd and all their live material- they are extraordinary. Great reaction! 🎼🎹🎸🎤🎶Pink Floyd wrote and played from a cerebral approach- in my opinion. Their use of minors and majors with expression - that grabs you because you know music. Your musical journey has taught you well.🤘😎Rock On!
