      Ronald L. Banks I definitely tried the doing everything at once and tackling the whole house at once instead of focusing on a room at a time. I’m a very driven person so with that comes impatience and I had to take a step back and realise trying to get it all done in a month was for me unrealistic.

    • @kandacenoire

      Def everything at once. Too much decision fatigue. It helps me to remove those things not just section them into sell/give etc off and leave them. I also think it’s important to come up with a theme/goal. I def have a uniform so clothes are easy. But books and cosmetics and “I’ll read or use this one day” things are really hard. Like I have a pot with a v dead plant in it. I’m the type who will need a deadline to get a new plant or I’ll have to force myself to get rid of my very beautiful, albeit ikea, pot. I also tell myself with sentimental things that the people who gave me them would want me happy more than they’d want me stuck with it. Like photos. I threw out out all of my moms photos of people I didn’t recognize or care about lol I took pictures of yearbooks and threw them away. Sent pictures of friends to them. Took pictures of cards.

      Trying to declutter someone else’s belongings. It doesn’t work. Stuck to your own items and let your spouse whatever do theirs in their own timing. If you don’t it will bite you in the hiney

      I love the "unclutter" too! So many youtubers have annoying music competing with their message so that often you can't catch all the words, and/or long intros that become more tedious to listen through with every additional video you watch.

    2.- Try to organize declutter everything at once
    3.- Striving to perfection
    4.- Create emotional attachment on an item
    5.- Not having a creal vision and an understanding of why you decided to declutter

    A decluttering mistake I’ve made that I wish I didn’t was buying organizational items such as dividers for the drawers and boxes. When in the long run I decluttered so much that all that organizational stuff just became useless and donated that anyways! Great video Ron!

    I personally found easier to declutter by category; took ALL the clothes in the entire house, then books, then cups etc. I needed to see everything at once, it was easier to make decisions and more efficient for me. Like you said, we all have our own method that works best for us, and that’s perfect! 😊

    I agree that trying to declutter everything at once is a mistake. I tried that with my clothes and I was completely overwhelmed. Now I declutter as I go. I put a bin in my closet and when I come across something that I haven't worn and know that I won't be wearing it, it goes in the bin.

    I have the Why, I have the Vision, what I don't have is enough time and energy to get it all done as quickly as I want to. My mind is Light years ahead of my actuality in decluttering, so when you say don't try and do everything at once- it is TRUE. I am slowly learning to take one project at a time, and not get too upset when things take longer than I think they should. I am learning celebrate every victory. The other thing I am learning is that once an area is initially decluttered, one must really be vigilant against clutter "creep". I cannot WAIT for the entire house to be DONE- 18 years of clutter, collection, kids and life. My living room and foyer echo now- I am making good progress. :)

    Hi there. A big mistake is offering stuff to others who want the item, but don't want to pick it up...or just don't come and pick it up. Well, I call and give them a date and if I get rid of the item they get mad at me. Another thing is to talk about something that I have gotten rid of and they say, well I wanted that. Well now I just donate to places that I like and do good things and just don't offer it to an individual anymore. Oh well, works for me. Have a great weekend.

    • @SUNROSE7878
      @SUNROSE7878 5 лет назад +4

      Yes, that failing to pick up the item is so annoying. Rarely when I do give an item to someone, I place it by my front door so I have to pass it to go in and out. I call the person, offer it with a time frame: 1 week, 10 days (even that is too long) I put the exit date on a piece of paper, on the item, if I don't hear from them, out it goes. But I am moving more towards your idea of just donating it and don't bother to mention it.

  • @KatieCottingham
    @KatieCottingham 4 года назад +1

    Yours is the first video of this kind that didn't make me feel horrible. It's always been one of two types of videos: 1) person with enough wealth to replace things so they joyously talk about donating things in huge quantities, while acknowledging they can just go buy another if needed in two weeks, or 2) the people who think a messy, cluttered life makes you a bad person or just stupid, the people that just seem interested in the organizing/decluttering category to judge others and make themselves feel superior.
    Coming from a non clinical perspective, this was probably the best advice I've heard outside of therapy because it supports what clinicians try to teach and guide you towards. Ultimately, excess things will always be hard for me because I don't think I'll ever get beyond the fear of the numerous "what if" scenarios I've actually been forced to survive. But getting life to a manageable place is the goal. Being ready for my next move is the next goal. The details of what those two goals entail will probably take the whole of the year, but I'm ready for that.

    Great tips, but the last one is my favorite. My “why” is “clutter stresses me out”. My widowed dad was a packrat/hoarder/Depression era child. Every day caring for him in his home (13 yrs) was very stressful for me; one reason was the clutter and his refusal to let me get rid of anything. I don’t know how my mom handled it for 50 yrs.

    I think it's possible to arrive at a place of perfection FOR YOU, for your needs and tastes, where you have no excess, something only you can define. It will of course be temporary, because your needs will change over time, but I think it can be done.

    • @RonaldLBanks
      @RonaldLBanks  5 лет назад +3

      I can agree with that Tracy! We all have very unique tastes and lifestyles so of course we can reach of place of perfection for us individually. I think the issue comes in when we’re trying to look and/or live like someone else. We look at what they have as “perfect” and we lose sight of our own journey because of that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Keep growing on your journey!!

  • @SUNROSE7878
    @SUNROSE7878 5 лет назад +3

    Thank you, Ron, as always, most clarifying and straight to the point.
    Part of my 'why' to declutter is, looking at all this stuff in my apartment makes my mind too busy, my attention too scattered. Much of what I have are gifts, free items, impulse purchases from long ago. You know it is bad when you go along in a thrift store and you linger around items that you either already have at home or you donated someplace else. Whoa!
    Another reason I want to declutter, then organize is I have to go through too many things when I want to do a project or activity. I want things at 'arm length away'. I get tired mentally just thinking about gathering the parts. No, it doesn't have to look museum installation empty but the effort put forth to start is tiring to say the least.
    I will go over my whys first. I will review my work table, and why I like it. How I can make it more convenient for set up and clean up of a project. How I can enjoy my living space more.
    I once had an apartment that was so small it wasn't a studio, it was a box. But I learned to think ergonomically, purposefully and conveniently. There was no unnecessary items, yet it was pleasing and decorative to my liking. I am going back to that energy, mindset and focus so I too can enjoy my space, life, and mind.
    As always, thank you for posting.

    First of all, you're a good soul. That really comes across in your videos.
    Iv'e been decluttering on and off. I let the process have it's own life. No rush, no vision, no particular goal. I went through my clothing and gave away what I didn't really need. I went through my books and only kept the most essential to me. I have a few collections of things that still have my interest and attention. I'm comfortable with that, for now. I have some framed art that I love, that has meaning to me.
    I'm not interested in emulating what minimalism is "supposed" to look like. I'll be fine with my version of minimalism if and when I arrive there. In the meantime I'm allowing things to go away as they will, when the feeling is right.

    Having a lot of stuff is expensive! I am paying every month to store stuff because my current living space is too small to accommodate all of my furniture and belongings. I am looking for a larger home but don’t want to drag along 60% of what’s in storage. So, I need to lighten the load. I’m working hard to keep a positive frame of mind and not let depression or too much stress creep in because that’s when I shop impulsively, adding a lot of new stuff to the mix. Depression is my trigger. Maybe others who have suffered from chronic pain can attest to dealing with the same issue and offer something that will help.

    My husband and I took the bedroom apart today and cleaned thoroughly and gave our clutter gathering dresser and nightstand to the neighbor. These were items that were given to us and we honestly had no use for them. The room looks great and we feel great about the progress we made. It's very motivating. Btw, the things that were in the dresser were items that were easily stored in bins and put under the bed, such as sheets and blankets. I now would like to take the bi-fold closet doors off. They are cheap and collect dust. I don't have room for the barndoor look that I wish I could use. If anyone has any ideas I'm open! Curtains, maybe. Possibly a full wall of them from ceiling to floor? I'll have to look through Pinterest at minimalistic ideas. I am really loving your videos!

So I took the doors off, and redid the bars to make it a walk in. I ended up liking the clean look of no doors/covering. And the acountabilty to keep it clean bc it was all visible. Even if you really want a door or covering, it might make it easier to picture what you want, without the doors you dont like in the way.

    I couldn't wait to have a fully stocked house. You need tape? What kind? I had it! A nail! No problem! I had all kinds. All kinds of 'just in case stuff' was ready for use! But therein lied the problem. When I moved into an apartment the 'stuff' had to find a new home.

    I have a clutter-free home right now but I still struggle with mistake #3: the perfect state of minimalism, mainly in terms of design. I wish I had less furniture (even having sold a lot of it over the past 3 years lol). I have many empty spaces in my cabinets right now but getting rid of them is not the case, I just can't sell them just to spend money on new and smaller ones. Therefore, getting used to empty spaces is another challenge for me.

    • @RonaldLBanks
      @RonaldLBanks  5 лет назад +2

      I have been taking down the upper cabinets in my kitchen as they become empty. I love how much bigger the kitchen looks! And if the cabinets arent there, they cant refill. I will be putting up an open shelf for my plates, cups, bowls, and placing a few plants on it as well to discourage clutter. That wall is very long, so if it looks to empty, I will put up a few framed pieces of my daughters art or a couple placemat size mini quilts.

    Not sure if this is a tip,but, anytime I have felt an attachment to something and wonder if I should get rid of it like say a trophy I got as a kid, I take a photo of it for the memory and put the item in a box in the back of my closet. If after a month I never go in that box I get rid of it and the picture is all I need to bring back the good memories.

I also gave to others who ret needed food, clothes, shoes, cleaning supplies, and other things I wasn't using. It feels good to not have things not being used.

      Riverdale tales Makes sense. Well I’ve already gone through most of the decluttering, I honestly don’t have that much stuff. I’ve moved by myself over the years so whatever will fully fit in my car goes and that will be for the future too. I may need a truck for a bed and maybe couch, but I like to keep things simple. You’re right though it definitely isn’t for everyone. I’m enjoying it thus far, being organized makes me feel good lol.

    My biggest decluttering mistake was becoming overly attached to items that have some kind of sentimental value. This includes clothes , items from my kids., gifts people bought me. Once I determined how to deal with them I was able to finally declutter.

    • @RonaldLBanks
      @RonaldLBanks  5 лет назад

      That’s a big one! You have to detach yourself emotionally from items you know you don’t really need. It makes letting go so much easier!

    • @trinam2503
      @trinam2503 5 лет назад

      I have a whole tote of blankets I would to bless someone else with. But they were gifts, mostly handmade, from family members. Who are still alive and very sentimental. And who's feelings would be beyond hurt if they knew I got rid of something they made me. A few months ago, we moved 10hrs away. But they will be visiting and expect to see these blankets. They dont understand our mimimalism journey at all. They think we are crazy. We have convinced them to buy less things for our daughter. And to at least loosly stick to a list for bdays and holidays. But things they gave us before we started are an emotional problem. Right now my solution is to place them our storage room except for visits. But I dont want the storage room full of emotional clutter for the next 10-20yrs either.

  • @ourtravelingzoo3740
    @ourtravelingzoo3740 5 лет назад

    I understand what you say about emotional attachment to clothing etc. however when it comes to decorating I only want to use something that has a meaning. I do some art so I make a lot of the decor and I also use a lot of photos. However yes I’ve stopped becoming attached to clothing

    When I started to declutter I was lucky that I didn't standardized my plan based on any particular minimalistic style. Bit one thing I made sure was that I will not buy anything from outside once I declutter for first time. I first disposed all the old things that I didn't use at all and than focused on my wardrobe. I removed excess bit I made sure that I am not short of any clothes. I kept all my inners but did gave away lots of clothes, bedsheets, backpacks, towels based on the use. After decluttering for first time I still have more than 16 shirts.. that's a lot but I will gradually declutter them with passage of time. Many other things also needs to be decluttered but will take some time. Now I am focusing on how I can dispose off my luggage bags and suitcases
