That Zombie Life I think the best advice I had ever heard in a long time was to find a way to re-purpose certain things. In my case, I have a lot of Birthday cards and they mean a lot to me. So I thought of scanning them and uploading them in a digital form to my virtual album. Anyway, thanks to Mr. Ronald Banks I got inspired more and more to declutter my living space.

Lost my husband to cancer 6.5 years ago. Learning how to let go has been so difficult. Everything in my house is a time capsule of memories that stopped the day he died. I have felt smothered and mournful. Realizing his/our stuff is no longer comforting but actually the source of debilitating sadness, I have begun to clear it out. I’m thankful for people like you who can express clear and thoughtful steps to get out from under your stuff and simplify you life. One tip that has been helpful to me is to not just toss something, but take a moment to acknowledge appreciation that it did serve its purpose and is no longer useful.

there are items i regret decluttering but i take the good with the bad. i definetly miss many of my items because they were either incredible investments or great tools or toys just to use daily. but then, the flipside is that i have peace of mind not having to tend to them or worry about their value going up or down or maintaining them, etc. so it goes both ways. i can't say either way if i actually regret it. i can't have it both ways in life as most people always want. minimalism keeps me in neutral gear so to speak...

So many of us feel that guilt. I have tried to expand forgiveness in my life to include (and perhaps start with) myself. Just as we easily forgive children because they are at the beginning of learning how to be in the world, I think we need to see ourselves, regardless of age,, as just beginning to learn some of life's lessons. Forgive your errors, large and small, so you can move forward and grow.

My biggest struggle has been the gifts and things that I "should" keep for sentimental reasons. I also have a bit of a leftover from my childhood, we lived in poverty, so you should never get rid of anything, because you may never have it again. I am working to simplify and realize that should I let something go back in to the world, that it turns out I need, I can just buy a new one, no big thing. I am much happier when I have only the things that, like Marie Kondo says, "spark joy" or have real utility. I even gave away most of my personal library. That was difficult for me, because I valued myself as an intellectual and bookworm, how can I be that if I don't have my books? I had over 400 books and now I am down to 2 bookcases. I know I can replace any book that I gave away, I have all of my original library saved on an app.

Since I moved on my own almost 10 years ago (gosh, I feel old!) I started accumulating the things I saw around me while growing up. I wanted to have the type of house that has EVERYTHING "just in case", you know?! :)) now I live in a 2 room apartment by myself and I find myself I don't have space anymore! it's draining me mentally. I have all these clothes saved for my "fantasy self" when I'm not really an outgoing person. Not to mention all my linen and decorative pillows and the huge pile of blankets. I have way too many random gadgets and miscellaneous things that I can't bring myself to give away. I have to say, I've decluttered a few time over these 10 years but then I just quit and buy things again. I just think of all the wasted money like you mentioned as well :(.
Growing older I just want to be able to pack everything in a day if needed and go someplace for a while without too much hassle. So maybe I'll start again during this quarantine and take the time to list things for sale.
    Wish me luck! ✨

I always struggle with gifts from my daughters. Since they know I'm purging my thing still, now they tend to ask me what I want for a specific day, like Mother's Day for example. I usually remind them that I'm purging and don't need anything, which usually results in a gift card LOL but at least I can buy a consumable or take my time and see if there's anything I need to replace for example.

But, one thing I don't have enough of is the opportunity to spend time with my daughter and grandson that live in Hawaii. So now I just ask for Alaska Airlines gift certificates for every holiday. I know what you mean Amanda. This is all about building new habits for yourself once you do declutter your space. Also as you’re letting go, make sure the decision you make are your own. If we let go of things because we see others doing it or we don’t do it at our own pace that may lead us to replacing them and filling the space back up.

I used to do this ALL the time. I would declutter, then have a little space and a few months later I would have filled that space right back up. When I finally realized that what I should have in my life is what I need for this stage of my life, it opened the door for me to let go of 75% of my stuff. I even was able to let go of some sentimental items (I kept only a few) because those items are not the person or my memories, my memories live in my heart. I haven't filled my spaces back up and even find myself letting go of more as time goes on. Hope you are keeping on.

My fantasy self was a bass guitar player, because I love the baseline in so much music I listen to- fast forward 7 years and I just gifted my beautiful, unplayed bass and an amp to my niece, who actually does play guitar and wanted to take up bass. It felt so good to see how excited she was with it, and to know it's doing what it was made for, being played and enjoyed. I spent 7 years walking past these items sitting in the corner of my bedroom, they were essentially mocking me for my lack of motivation and ability to play, chipping away at my ability to minimize. Giving the fantasy self a a permanent vacation fro that stress has been great!

Great tips! What I struggled the most with was the sense of sudden urgency I had to get rid of everything and not knowing what to do with the items I decided to let go of. My 2 cents would be to get the things out of the room you are trying to organize, and don't bring anything back in that doesn't fit your criteria. If you let things in the room they will find a new spot and you would've effectively reshuffled your clutter. So with the things out of the room, you have a neat place and time to decide what to do with the extra items.

A struggle I had was initially the sense of being overwhelmed. I knew to do what I wanted was going to take me a long time. It did. Years. But I am happy I took the approach I did. The photographs were the most difficult, but now eight years later, I have everything tagged properly so I can pull up what I want easily. The same process was used for the music and the library. I spent four to five years cataloging everything, but I benefit from it now.
Doing that permitted me to deal with the balance of the stuff more easily. I got to the point where I could just discard things without stressing over it. My mindset shifted. I realize the payoff of all this constantly. Clutter is no longer a thing for me; I have progressed beyond that. And that is the point of tackling it, isn't it? To get beyond that point so other things/experiences of greater value can be accomplished and appreciated.

  • @duckyluver12
    @duckyluver12 4 года назад

My biggest struggle is balancing minimalism with environmentalism and low-waste living. To avoid waste I tend to need more items to replace the disposable ones that tend to come and go invisibly from a minimalist home. Things like reusable containers, reusable menstrual products, bits of wrapping that I get gifts in so I can use them again when giving gifts if it's still in good condition, all sorts of products left over from before I started becoming more minimalist but it would be a huge waste to just throw it out...also responsibly getting rid of an item in a way that it definitely won't end up in landfill, since sadly most things that are donated to thrift stores are just thrown out.

Initially I thought the biggest struggle through minimalism would be getting married since my wife isn't so much of a minimalist, however we've found a good balance of compromise and she's been really encouraging me with it. Really, the struggle has been adjusting what minimalism looks like after getting married since it means the intentionality of materials and time does change.

I am just starting on my decluttering path, and I’m having a hard time. Currently, 80% of my belongings are in storage, because I had to pack up and move in with my parents to take care of my dad. He passed away last November, and since then, I’ve been trying to help my mother get control of her clutter(she is a major horder). With all that, and working full time, and taking care of my mother’s health as well, it has left me very little time for myself. I can’t even remember the last time I did anything for me. So, I have decided to take a step back from helping my mother and focus on me. Hopefully, by the time I am able to get her downsized, I will have less stuff to move back into my own place with. Luckily, having to live with a horder as a child, I did realize how not to accumulate so much stuff. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t held onto some things that I really don’t need......

One thing that really held me back is what to do with things that are not good enough to donate or sell - but generally OK (extra used erasers, pencils crayons etc or jewellery) I felt bad trashing them - but with no other option - had to give myself permission to just trash some things after exhausting every other avenue. Thanks again for ur content

The one year rule with clothes or things unfortunately doesn’t apply to me. I do tend to come back to things years later and use them. Same with clothes, my moods come and go. I’ve had more incidents I can count over my decade long attempt at decluttering where I’ve made the difficult decision to finally let things go that I’ve wracked my brain and made sure I likely won’t use again. Then 5 or so years later, I’ll find myself in the mood to wear it or clothes like it, and I lament the loss of many unique items. Makes me even more likely to hold on to things since this has happened several times before. And it’s so frustrating! Other people may not have this kind of problem though, and don’t have cycles like this, so your tips will be very helpful to most people.
Definitely relate to feeling overwhelmed with the amount of decisions to make. That’s usually why I stop shortly after I get started. Thank you for sharing.

My fantasy self has been the hardest since I always wanted a place for my own to recieve friends but every place I have been able to afford is both expensive and unconfortably small. This breaking up process has become harder since I do need a bigger space (just a 1 bedroom and small kitchen apartment) but for the first time I am opening towards moving to new areas in the city, and still I am getting rid of the idea of having the apartment everyone wants to party because its cool and has an awesome mini bar (I almost never drink alcohol!!) But I am keeping the items that have helped me feel at home in my old spaces. What also helped me was notice those who matter will drive to visit me as I do for them and wont care if my space is no designed and decorated for visitors.
I also let go of regretting the money I spent on items I once enjoyed or loved, since they served me that purpose in that cycle in my life and now Im going through another chapter.

  • @renupunjabi9482

I've always decluttered my stuff even when I wasn't aware about minimalism. But the problem was I ended up buying again.
Also the problem with me is cloth fitting. Sometimes, I return empty handed and sometimes all items look good on me and I buy them all.....and note that I preserve those items and use only after the current clothes have worn off (which could be for two or more years).
I need to stop doing that maybe, otherwise I've surely become mindful with my purchases.
Also am wearing office wear at home during this lockdown as I don't have much home wear. Kinda makes me feel happy using up all that stuff I put my hard-earned money on. I also donated half of it already. 😇😇
Am actually suffering from get rid of everything disease right now. 😂

A struggle for me is I’ve always been poor. I have this mindset that when I see nice things while thrifting I buy them because I can afford them but the items are often unworn or unused by me and then before I know it my place is filled with stuff that is essentially just clutter and wasted money. 😞 Then I’ll go to declutter things and they’ll end up in a pile and I’ll tell myself I will make some money back by selling the items but never get around to it because I’m busy with work, my children, life, etc. The items end up being redistributed around the house or sitting on the kitchen table, in a box or whatever. Today I actually brought three boxes to a donation bin! I’m trying to get on track! My plan is to declutter on a regular basis and do a no spend challenge as well.

I've been on this journey for about 6 years and my biggest struggle is adapting to my setting. For many months out of the year I work and live in national forests where I really dont need much and I dont even think about the things I dont have. When I return back to "normal" society, living a life in the city requires different items. I tend to get rid of a lot of things before I switch my setting, only to have to replace it when I get back. I realize some items either added to my life or are needed for specific times. For example, if I have to dress up for an event or presentation more than once or twice a year it is extremely rare, but because of that one day, I dont want to donate my fancy outfit to have to buy it again in a year.

Mine is gifts ; for some reason , non-minimalists always think the reason to minimise is ALWAYS because there is a finical problem and their idea of solving the problem is giving you gifts even when you emphasise a thousand tines not to get you gifts and they get offended if they learned you donated or gave to someone else

My stumbling block has been the shared study. Some of the things in there are hard for me to depart with, art supplies, papers, books, photos. But adding to the struggle is I feel as I downsize my husband accumulates more and takes up more space. I sometimes place empty boxes in spaces so he can’t place stuff there. I even lay stuff over my desk, otherwise he will set up equipment there.

What is helping me to let go and hold onto what matters as a photographer I bought an album and I'm deciding to take more photos and put those photos into albums. So instead of holding onto things I hold onto memories and what will help is writing on the back of the photo where the memory takes place to be like a flashback. Hopefully this inspires or helps someone. Declutter your phone and hold onto the photo album.

When I give clothes away, years later I find an outfit to put together with that item (still believing I still have said item) and then regret that I try to purge things. It feels good but my mom is always telling me I give things away too fast. But I love the feeling of getting rid of clutter. So this video has encouraged me to continue to do that, but now I have a better system to determine what I should give away. Maybe this was all that I was missing🤷🏾‍♀️
