Marshall…please don’t tease me with a RUclips short! I love your videos so much that when a notification comes across my screen my eyes light up, my heart rate increases and I say to myself…”I cant wait to watch this video…my life is now complete”…but then it’s only a RUclips Short. One minute just doesn’t do it for me. I need an hour…I need an hour once a week. Seriously…You are the best channel on RUclips! Keep up the amazing work…and if you must…give us a RUclips short!
I'll respectfully disagree. While having spent more than a few hours watching him resurrect watches, it's also nice to see some short form content. Especially when it's like this - more of an aside on watches in general rather than the specific piece he's working on at the time.
The perlage effect is very similar to whats known as machine turned. Then there are the skeletal movements that you can practically see right through them..
This was fantastic! I loved seeing the different patterns that you named... I don't know if Rolex ever claimed to be the best, but I can usually tell when someone thinks they are. That said, I would never scoff at one, but I'll always think of the ones that are over the top, and probably never own one... 👍🏻
I always think of Rolex as building a good solid watch. But it doesn't have the finishing touches like the brands he mentioned. I was looking another video. It was a IWC watch being assembled and the watch interior looked very nice. Practically everything in the interior was polished.
Finishing, especially by hand, takes a looot of time. I'm a watchmaking student and for our course watch we have to finish every single bridge & screw. Surface finishing, mirror polished bevels & countersinks, black polished screws with bevelled slots etc. It may take a whole day to finish one single screw.
My Hamilton grade 992B "Railway Special" includes all three of these cosmetic features plus round-spoked wheels. It's also temperature compensated and was adjusted in six positions.
Ok so people talk about $10k+ watches a lot. But honestly, is there any difference between a $200 watch and a $1200 watch? I'd like to step into the four figure level but I'm not sure how to tell if it's actually 'worth it' quality wise.
None of these watches are "worth" it, not in an objective sense. Not a $10000 watch, not a $1200 watch, not even a $200 watch. Don't buy a watch just because someone said the movement has nicer looking bevels in it. Buy it because you like it and wearing it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Approach watches like this, and your $200 watches will feel as valuable to you as your $2000 watches because they are something you love, not something you bought because you tried to justify its value. If you need to talk about worth when it comes to watches, you're not ready to part with four figures. Is somebody telling you how nice the bevel and lines and circles on the movement are really going to persuade you to part with money? That's stupid. Buy because you think it's nice, not because somebody else thinks it's nice. Because you're paying and you're wearing it, not them.
Hi Marshall, I really love your channel and enjoy watching very much. For me however, a "short" is not the best format for your content. Hope, you don't mind.
It's a shame that Rolex went up market. Their tool watches should be available in lower price tiers. If you adjust for inflation based on old Rolex prices a new Sub should be about $4k (like a Tudor is today).
If you are talking about beveling, you will start to see that with watches starting at around $20,000. But these high end watches are finished better everywhere, not just the movement. You will also see superior finishing on the cases and dial.
There are always have similarities in watch movement or almost the same as the expensive once Or maybe that movement on cheaper watch is actually put it in the expensive watches But the only difference is in the brand name and the way they changed the finishing of the movement but in the end it's the same it's all about the branding 🤣🤣🤣
Echoes of my buddy Walt Odets' Rolex explorer expose: mediocre finishing and assembly, robust and relatively acceptable performance. All of which can be had for far less $$$ in another brand. That's Rolex throughout history.
Idk I'm wearing an it's rolex rn that has gained 10 seconds in a month of wear in mostly -10 to 22 Celsius temperature (so a variety). I wear it doing everything and it seems to be incredibly robust for a 40 year old watch
Be nice if Rolex stopped this decoration of its movements. Focus more on getting watches to its customers and less about prettying the movements, that no wearer will see. 😂
Rolex could be forced to improve their movement finishing. The quality of the Chinese clone watches is getting so good this is the only area where they can try to keep ahead
Nobody really sees inside a Rolex except a repairman, tho. Not having a display back is kind of a bane for Rolex although it does affect watertight integrity.
This is the most interesting watch repair channel on YT in my humble opinion.
💯
FR. Love how he explains all the things I’ve always had questions about. Very satisfying AND enriching to watch.
I absolutely agree....his humility and his style makes me love to watch his content. He is a genuine watch enthusiast and engineer.....

Love your channel man!
Do any of those finishing features make the watch work better?
If you watch closely, 3-4 places in the movement on screen have burrs
If they get loose, that's an issue
@@angrydragonslayer I can see that would not be good, but proper deburring during part fabrication would take care of that.

What’s your opinion on Grand Seiko? My 9R65 spring drive movement looks gorgeous.

Digging a side tunnel in the rabbit hole, I like to inspect the corners of the anglage…..🤫
Great content!
When are you gonna service a Patek Philippe?? That would be awesome.

Ok hard guy.
great info and channel, got me into watch restoring
Rolex movements are generally poorly finished
Ok so people talk about $10k+ watches a lot. But honestly, is there any difference between a $200 watch and a $1200 watch? I'd like to step into the four figure level but I'm not sure how to tell if it's actually 'worth it' quality wise.
Huge. Just be smart and shop around. You can get really nice finish watch under $1500
None of these watches are "worth" it, not in an objective sense. Not a $10000 watch, not a $1200 watch, not even a $200 watch. Is the watch accurate? Is it strong and reliable? And to what degree? Those are the only things that interest me.
Then get a G shock or a spring drive
J Le C and grand Seiko too.
Only to be appreciated by the service tech unless it has an exhibition case
Stop using steel screwdrivers to lift bridges, its so horrible to watch.
I have a Waltham pocket watch from the 1920's that i repaired and the finishing on the movement is beautiful
Hi Marshall, I really love your channel and enjoy watching very much. For me however, a "short" is not the best format for your content. Hope, you don't mind.
Yo you should do a reaction video of the slowmoguys upload where they zoom in on a working speedmaster!!
❤Espero imparale ❤
And that is why Rolex didn’t have an exhibition back until recently.
Would love to see you take apart a Rolex super clone from vsf or cf

I was scrolling and heard your voice, i was like "why is Neil deGrasse Tyson talking about watches" lol
So ,how much more am I paying for this detail that most people aren't going to see ?😒
If you are talking about beveling, you will start to see that with watches starting at around $20,000. But these high end watches are finished better everywhere, not just the movement. You will also see superior finishing on the cases and dial.
No one cares as we don't open Rolex watches, so we never get to see it anyway.
I was a machinist and the milling bits is what makes that pattern
Not on one those watches. Its all done by hand

some want to spend less $, others wear Rolexes
Actually as a retired tool and die maker of 54 years it’s not that difficult to do. I’ve done it on thousands of smaller parts. Just saying
No mechanical movement can match the accuracy, reliability and duration of a $20 digital watch.
Why does Marshal’s voice sound different on this short than on the long videos?
meh and? only people who have money to burn literally can afford those
Be nice if Rolex stopped this decoration of its movements. Focus more on getting watches to its customers and less about prettying the movements, that no wearer will see. 😂
Don't worry Rolex is spending almost no time on movement finishing lol
Omega has one of the best looking movement.
Not even close
Sir, SIR. Those are chamfers, not bevels. :)
Rolex could be forced to improve their movement finishing. The quality of the Chinese clone watches is getting so good this is the only area where they can try to keep ahead
a clone remains a clone.
@@tamasfrank1078The only difference is the building its made in.
