    It wouldn't be so bad if you could call up and talk to someone. But if you do need to ring them, all you get is some foreign call centre with people you can't understand. It's disgusting.

    British Gas is shocking. Their customer service is non existent. Talking from experience. I lost my grandma last year and British Gas told my Grandad he needed to go onto a new account. He has always paid his electric using a giro slip at the post office without issue but the new account didn’t offer that. It took 12 phone calls to British Gas to get them to sort it out (baring in mind this is stress after he had lost his wife after 50 years of marriage) plus while he couldn’t pay his bill due to there error at one point they referred his non payment to a debt collection team because they said he had made no attempt to pay. He doesn’t understand direct debit he doesn’t understand online banking he understands cash and that’s how he wants to pay his bills. Why is that so hard.

      Due diligence is a legal requirement that they have ignored. Because theres no way for the public to get it investigated

    BG needs to be investigated. We dumped them way back. We were fine untill that new system was introduced. Their South African Helpline also needs investigating.

    You cannot "talk" to British Gas only "Live Chat" which if you cannot type quickly is a dead loss . They inflate their direct debits so they can "help" you budget and inflate their bank accounts .
    I look forward to moving to Octopus .

    Yeah same thing happened to us. British Gas is a fraud. Three people in a house most days were out and they keep sending us bills like 1k eventually left them thank god

      The new billing system has been a nightmare as has dealing with a South African call centre finally managed to sort it out after a stressful few months getting nowhere.

    This has been on going since the very early 2000s, and they did nothing then. British gas have team talks with engineers every month and they advise every engineer to sell something, it's called the Great British Rip-off

    I'm not even a British gas customer, but they added gas and electric on my credit for no reason and removed it in 3 months and it's effected my credit score for 6 months and when I called them they have no idea what happened... It looks like a daylight robbing people by British gas and getting away and just saying sorry... but ignoring the impact of the people daily life on top of that stress, especially people struggling with the cost of living... shame on British gas...

      Google Ferguson vs British Gas were British Gas where found guilt of a criminal offence for exactly this issue with there billing system harassing customers.

    I was getting bills at a rental for charges when I wasn't even in the property and they just put everything to my name. Luckily managed to proof and clear it up but the phonecalls did nothing. Now, I know

    There is nothing new in British Gas billing system being incompetent and their customer service will give one explanation one day and a different person will give you a different explanation another day. The trick is to keep complaining and when they fail to respond take it to the Ombudsman. I ended up 2 years ago getting the equivalent of 6 months free gas in compensation payments over and above getting errors in billing rectified

    There needs to be legal caps on these things. These companies are profiting by hundreds of millions (close to a billion, in fact) every single year, despite the apparent need for increasing costs every single year. If it costs them (just for example, idk exact numbers) £0.10 a day to supply gas to a small household, they should pay no more than about £0.15. Even per person that's still an income of approximately £660,000 per DAY (£240 million a year).

    Had the same cut us off last winter then sent payment card to the for a man we didn’t know ! Argued and left them, they took plenty of money out of the bank, was only with them one month !!! Now got debt collector letters claiming we owe them more .. but we left quickly same month .. letters to us also letters to an unknown man ..

    This happened to me when I moved into my new build. I took records of transactions, quotes, and recordings of every customer rep I spoke to and sent them to British gas complaints team. I received no response after that

    After my mum passed away last year it took several weeks to get an accurate final bill from British Gas and close the account
    Their shambles of a billing system just kept spewing out endless inaccurate bills

    A while ago, we started getting bills that were 3 times what we owed for gas. Several calls to customer service over about 3 weeks resolved nothing. I created a spreadsheet to calculate exactly what we did owe according to the meter readings and the calculation formula. Eventually I realised that the bills were assuming that the readings (from the date it went wrong) were in cubic feet not cubic metres. I eventually found a customer services peron who was intelligent enough to discover the reason. Someone had changed their meter from a cubic metre one to a cubic feet one, and someone at BG had entered the meter change details incorrectly, so it appeared that WE had changed our meter when we hadn't. Once I had provided photos of the meter to show it was still a cubic metre one, they eventually managed to correct it several weeks later. I imagine things like this happen all the time.

    "New billing system" computer problems not a problem? Isolated issue? People receiving erroneous demands for thousands? Anyone else thinking of Horizon and the Post Office? I'm glad I changed suppliers a few years ago.

    Used to work at British gas. Awful company, with completely incompetent management. Would recommend people use other suppliers, much better and cheaper options available.

    British Gas estimates your bills by increasing them by 100%, most people dont question these due to the way they divide it up to confuse you,
    1st year from questioning my estimated bills i saved £350.00

      If you submit meter readings - British Gas usually send a reminder before a bill is due - then you won't get estimated bills. Meter readings are easily submitted online. Also if you submit an accurate meter reading after receipt of a bill a new revised bill will be generated.

      They are commiting fraud on enormous scale.

    The best way ( to fight ? ) this is to keep an ACCURATE record of bills for last ( few ? ) years ....when your bill goes from £56 per month ... to .... £8734 per month , you have a good case to answer , ( should it ever get to a magistrates court ) .... and NEVER have an electric ( SMART ? ) meter ... my friend had similar problems , with his .. QED .... DAVE™🛑

    I like how they apologise and say "...they will learn from these customer service mistakes..." It's almost like these organisations simply "can't" learn past internal lessons, or heaven forbid, even from previous computer system fiascos such Horizon, NHS IT system etc."...

    Anyone can make mistakes but it is how they are dealt with that makes a company good or bad. Just like the Post Office, they should not try to defend the indefencible but resolve to fix the problem ASAP.

    Do believe there is a case of hacking going on with the billing system. A more stringent montoring on the billing system of the gas companies must be put in place or else it would escalate further and this will most likely cause a cahotic problem.

    When I was at school in Physics they told me P1 x V1 / T1 = P2 x V2 / T2 meaning gas pressure is directly proportional to volume and inversely proportional to temperature, in hindsight almost certainly not linear but my point is gas meters measures molecular pressure to estimate gas volume used but if you placed an electric cooler on the gas pipe it would register less gas, it probably isn’t illegal.😮

    This usually occurs when there has been a significant breakdown in communications between the Customer and the Supplier British Gas such as calling the Customer Service telephone operator a 'Dickhead' on a heated phone call

    The thing is companies never learn from other companies mistakes with new computers systems, The Post Office scandal, Birmingham City Council bankrupt because of IT Failures and who knows how many others, computers are a very good tool, if the operator knows what they are doing, so many companies give a few hours tuition on a .new system and expect their staff to work it straight away, it is all about time and money, and companies are not prepared to give either in proper training.

    I’ve been affected too. I was told at one point I owed 8 grand after they changed their system. Then a bill for 6 and a half grand then 5 and a half grand. I’m a single parent on universal credit and carers allowance I suffer with mental health and have a child with learning difficulties and complex needs. We live in a tiny 3 bedroom house only 3 of us live here myself and two teenagers. Now being told I apparently owe 3 and a half grand!! I was being told I was in credit but in debit??? They have made me ill through all the stress. Now having to have pre payment meters in so I can apply for a loan to help pay this bill.

    So they told one that it cant effect your credit rating, while another has had credit rating errors and cost her money and reputation, I wouldnt believe anything they say. Did this lady get her credit score back??

    I have had a similar problem since the "Migration" I have an EV tariff which gives me a cheaper rate between midnight and 5am and since April they have been charging me an hour at peak rate every time i charge the car. I also have a battery storage and solar system installed and use negligible imported power during the day. This is probably why I spotted the sudden increase in peak rate consumption as quick as I did. I started this complaint in April 24 and have sent vast amounts of information to the senior complaints team which is quite frankly being ignored by them.
    I would Urge anyone who has a dual rate tariff and has been migrated to the new system to carefully check their peak rate reading after a charge session to make sure it hasn't gone up along with the off peak reading

    After several years of receiving rebates from british gas and only ONE meter reading when I moved in, and reporting my readings on line as requested, , I decided to leave and, suddenly, I owed them £1500.
    They tried to claim back the rebates and charges from over a year ago.
    I eventually had to get my MP involved to speak with s superior being at BG.
    Needless to say, it didn't end well for them.
    Their billing was in tatters then. trying to work out how much I was paying per unit of electricity (no gas), was impossible.

    I was in credit with BG of almost £1000 , they changed the billing system to a new system and my credit disappeared, I was assured that the credit would pass to the new system but that never happened.

    If an error has occurred; whether it is a system or human, if it is a company error, then any incorrect updates to credit files, bills, customer data, etc. Must be put right at the expense of the company

    I sympathise.however, with a little trepidation I moved on to smart meters last year and so far so good. They, British gas didn't inform me about the new system but perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones "so far". The secret is to keep an eye on your meter readings against your bills and hammer them when it goes wrong! I'm a pensioner but I was good at arithmetic and simply take them on and quite enjoy it! These companies have no soul and must be nationalised!

    I constantly hear of these kind of errors and it always seem to be British gas or Ovo.
    British gas tried for months to get me to pay a bill on a property i never knew existed.
    Yrs later i had ovo totally screwing up my meter readings & no one at ovo had the brains to sort it out for over 8 months.

    Energy price cap per unit and standing charge 1 October to 31 December 2024:
    Electricity: 24.50 pence per kWh, 60.99 pence daily standing charge
    Gas: 6.24 pence per kWh, 31.66 pence daily standing charge
    Just remember that these prices are only good for people who DO NOT have a contract. That's why it's better be without the contract because at least companies cannot legally charge you more than what Ofgem has officially set up. I always pay for what I use and I do not have a DD. I always give my meters readings at the end of the month and I pay for what I used.

    I once received a gas bill for 540 pounds when I contacted brit gas and explained I am fully electric they said can u pay some of it what a joke

    That’s why I love pay as you go it was here when I moved in and it never bothered getting it changed, less chance of being scammed by the companies. Their migration issue “is always in the favour of the company, not the customer. Let that sink in, if some people never challenge it, it’s more money for them. They should get finned by the government

    Complain, complain and keep complaining. Businesses take the public for granted. Make them deal with thousands of complaints. Service standards overall is depreciating quickly, which is fine when there is choice for consumers, not in resteixted marlets however. Just domt stop complaining and sue them for everything and anything.

Who the hell is going to be stupid enough to invest in a country where the workers make major errors like this and consistently do so. The UK was NEVER this stupid or so bad.     Why should there be a knock on her door? How could bailiffs come and how could there be bailiff intervention without both a county court judgement (which she would be aware of and would have been informed about by the court when the application was made and given an opportunity to enter a defence) AND a subsequent application to the court for bailiff enforcement following the successful granting of a county court judgement? Debt collection agencies are NOT bailiffs and have no enforcement powers of any sort. Why should this affect their credit files unless the bills remained unpaid and undisputed? I don't think the woman complaining about damage to her credit files for several months is telling the FULL story.
    If I received an incorrect bill, I would take a meter reading, compare it to the (possibly estimated) meter reading on the bill and provide a correct meter reading. This can be done online and triggers a new bill. Bills are based on meter readings. If I received 50 bills a day (presumably for different amounts not just the result of somebody setting the printer to 50 copies instead of 1?) I would call British Gas. Interestingly, not one of these whinging individuals mentions ever having called British Gas to discuss the matter and what the result of the call was. Strange. Also, most people pay by fixed monthly direct debit these days; very few people still have full payment for gas used monthly or quarterly billing. I am a British Gas customer and have encountered no problems.

    British gas made me bankrupt despite having no gas for 2 years.
    They are acting like criminals. Cancel your direct debits.

      It is highly unlikely in the extreme that a utility company would attempt to instigate bankruptcy proceedings against an individual.

      @@GARYINLEEDS I really don't think so. Not bankruptcy. Worst case scenario in the case of an unpaid utility bill which you failed to pay, dispute or otherwise address would be an application to a court for a county court judgement which you would have been informed about by the court and given an opportunity by the court to defend. If your defence was unsuccessful or you failed to enter a defence and the judgement was granted, they MAY, if the amount was significant, have applied to the court for some type of enforcement action such as an attachment of earnings or court bailiff enforcement, although this would be highly unusual in the case of personal utility bill debt. But to instigate bankruptcy proceedings in a bankruptcy court and be successful, NO WAY.

    so what's being sent out are duplicate copy older bill, that have already been paid, or do live next door to the bloke how goes out smart meter reading black box, and get new reading every start round and posable also one goes back home at the end of the day? just pay most resent one with highest meter reading?
