Restoring a Vintage Side Table

  • ASMR Style video - I am sick at the moment so please enjoy the quiet.
I purchased this side table specifically so that I could use it for a small 10-gallon fish tank. It has plenty of storage, doesn't take up a lot of room, fits in with my bedroom furniture, and most importantly it has a laminate top. While laminate isn't my favorite, there is no denying the durability of it. I also attempt to do in-grain painting or faux wood painting techniques on a missing veneer area. It is a skill I need to improve upon and this was a good candidate to practice on. Hope you enjoy this furniture restoration!

I luv mcm. I had the same designer for a tall boy and long boy with a mirror. I luckily only had to clean it and shine it up. Very minor repairs, gave it to my niece. You did an excellent job at restoring that piece. It's gorgeous!

First of all I love the paint can lid idea!!! Brilliant!! I've been trying to perfect wood graining too. I've been starting with the background color first, then a light coat of sealer. On top of that I use a large variety of artist bushes. Some only have a few hairs. I get better results if I do many separate layers of color with sealer in between. That way if I mess up I don't have to completely start over. If the grain looks good but the color is too dark I sand ever so slightly to lighten it up. Also if the color is off a little I find other areas on the piece to incorporate that color so it looks more a part of the whole piece rather than just the repair. Can't say I'm an expert but I hope to get there one day!! I love what you did to bring this table back to life!! Can't wait to see more of your work. Just subscribed!!

So glad your back. The piece turned out beautifully. I am wondering if the struggle with the painted grain could be better if you are doing one layer at a time and letting it dry in-between. I don't know. My mom's and artist so I have seen some things. Hopefully that helps for next time. It's your first time and I think you did well. Practice makes perfect right. 😁
