When a "Quick Flip" Goes Wrong: FRUSTRATING Side Table Makeover

  • CHARITY CHALLENGE! I challenged other furniture flipping RUclipsrs to flip a piece of furniture and donate the piece or the proceeds of the sale of the piece to charity or someone in need.
Playlist link: • 2023 Furniture Flippin...
I thought this little mid century side table would be the perfect charity flip. Single side tables don't typically sell well, and it was a great opportunity for me to show how I tackle simple projects. Turns out, removing that old damaged finish was ANYTHING but simple, and it was the single most frustrating flip of the year. Am I happy with the end results? Not really. But I did what I could, and it's certainly going to be able to be used and loved. It just wasn't what I was picturing in my head for the final result.
Be sure to curl up on the couch and watch the whole playlist, as these talented folks flip furniture for the sake of others. ❤️ Everyone wins here, but I WILL be donating a prize to a special winner of the group.

Probably a 'hostess' table where cooked meats are cut on it in flat bottom hot trays/platters. A restaurant or dining room side table so to speak. Treated with very thick heat-resistant lacquer. The scooped edge frame of the top catches any errant cooking liquids when serving from it.

Wow. It is fun to see that there are pieces that challenge the master. I was happy that you stuck with it. Makes me think that the top maybe was refinished, perhaps to waterproof it. Always a pleasure to see your show.

Looks like maybe it had a linseed oil undertone to try and seal it, and it never cured before a toner finish was added over it.. very tough to remove. As always Angie, job well done. You do our profession justice with your logical approach. Respect.

Angie: I’ve never seen a stubborn stain like that before. However, the table did turn out really good. It will look fine in someones’ home. Carol from California

When you have applied paint stripper, take a palstic foil and place it over the freshly coated surface. This binds what is contained in the paint stripper and it works better on the paint surface. And leave it on for 12 hours. Good work … as ever 👍🏽

Circa 1850 only takes about a minute to actually work so it would technically slow me down by covering it. For less potent strippers, it is beneficial though.

Sometimes things looking easy but the true is often the opposite....but even it is not your favorite piece, it is looking now so much better ! And yes it was not easy but at the end it turn out example off pushing true and keep on going . That is making this table special.even it is not your first choice ! Love the video as always.

It didn't turn out how you'd have liked it to and it was a lot of sweat equity for such a small piece, but it went to a good cause and you should feel good about that aspect. Also, thank you for taking us on the journey of some of the struggles, you powered through and it's all we can do. Keep your ultimate goal of less furniture in landfills, donating/charity fundraisers, and your art. Great job. ❤

I understand your tendency to self criticize - I’m also one of those that fights perfectionist tendencies. In this case tho, I think your criticism is misplaced, or, perhaps, too critical. The table is lovely and shows the love of the process and art that you invested into it. You take each project as a challenge - taking something functional (or potentially so) but old, unattractive, wobbly or broken, definitely unloved, then using skill and creativity make it new again.

Oh Angie, I refinished an exterior door that was in our kitchen,,.which I thought would be “easy breezy”. The finish was that yellow-orangey tan that was popular in the 80’s. It was just like this table. I was ready to put it in the dump. I scraped, I stripped (not me) and I sanded. And then I did it again. I finally got it “good enough” and called it a day. The other side that was in the kitchen looked great painted white. Whew!!!
    I felt your pain.
