When a "Quick Flip" Goes Wrong: FRUSTRATING Side Table Makeover

- CHARITY CHALLENGE! I challenged other furniture flipping RUclipsrs to flip a piece of furniture and donate the piece or the proceeds of the sale of the piece to charity or someone in need.
Playlist link: • 2023 Furniture Flippin...
I thought this little mid century side table would be the perfect charity flip. Single side tables don't typically sell well, and it was a great opportunity for me to show how I tackle simple projects. Turns out, removing that old damaged finish was ANYTHING but simple, and it was the single most frustrating flip of the year. Am I happy with the end results? Not really. But I did what I could, and it's certainly going to be able to be used and loved. It just wasn't what I was picturing in my head for the final result.
Be sure to curl up on the couch and watch the whole playlist, as these talented folks flip furniture for the sake of others. ❤️ Everyone wins here, but I WILL be donating a prize to a special winner of the group.

Girl, you are so much more patient than I am. Fire would have become an option at some point for removal.
🤣 I'm having a good laugh picturing that! 😉
That actually would have removed the finish wouldn't it
@@TranscendFurnitureGalleryDid you suffer any damage from that hurricane last week? I hope not.❤
A blow torch! 🔥🤣👍
Actually, would a heat gun assist removing most finishes?
Although that side table was problematic, it gave you, and us, another learning opportunity about what to try, and try again, in order to get the piece where you want it to be. I think it turned out superb! Oh, and thank you for issuing this excellent challenge to the other refinishers to support charity. 💞💗💖
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Love this table!! Would love to have it. Thanks for the video. ❤❤❤❤❤
The side table's final tone is rich and sumptuous; it practically glows! Good on you for making these donations of resources, time and effort to great causes.
I'm so glad you like how it turned out Gina. Thank you so much for the support!! 😃
I think that the finished product is lovely. The fact that you rescued this side table from being trashed to a lovely addition to anyone's home speaks to your hard won experience, talent, and determination. Kudos
Thank you kindly!
This was timely for me….I was putting together a new grill today….I figured 3-4 hours at the most. Nope. 7.5 hours later I finally finished it, after ruining 5 bits and having to go borrow a different kind from my brother due to a manufacturing screw up. A lot of 🤬 here, too!! 😬😬
Murphy's Law strikes again!. The table looks beautiful. It's always fascinating to watch you paint the replacement veneer. I's like wait a magic trick in slow motion. It's awesome you're donating two pieces to a good charity.👍👍
Thank you so much for watching!
Oh my goodness - I tried to refinish the matching coffee table and it was also a nightmare! I don’t know what top coat Deilcraft put on these tables but it’s some sort of witchcraft and sorcery 😂
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had problems with them!
I love how you work through the problems that arise, which gives the rest of us confidence and hope to not give up. I know the pain of finishes not coming off and love how you tackled it. The four letter words have flown more than once and I feel it's justified! Lol It's awesome that you work that hard on a donation piece. It's says alot about your character, but those of us who have watch your videos already know, and admire, the woman you are!
Thank you very much Tom, I really appreciate that!! ❤️
You did a great job as always. Happy to see you and your partner and fuffy babies safe.
Thank you very much! 😀
I recently moved from an isolated home in the woods to an apartment. I now have to be mindful of my frustrated expletives when hanging art and shelves and dealing with my "nemesis" : wall anchors.
Beautiful result Angie!
Or have super understanding neighbours! What a change for you - I hope the adjustment is going ok for you!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery You are so kind. I'm 70 and it was just time. Thanks!!
Wow! Worth every second. I remember! But then, I am 74 years and a Highlander in Scotland. Lol
It is nice to know that although you worked very hard on this, you donated it. I think it looks lovely and hope it brings joy to whom ever gets it in the end. Thanks for being "sustainably" conscious!
Thank you so much!
Angie you have the patience of a saint, and as always you have done a great job for a worthy cause
Thank you very much Stacie!
The little table came out beautiful- maybe not what you’d envisioned for it, but definitely something people can happily own and enjoy for years. Also, yay for bonus bunny footage!
Thank you very much!
While you were showing your technique for painting on the grain over the pressboard you should know that there was a point where I couldn’t see that the area was painted even though you continued to work on it. Your painted work repairs are exceptional! I’d like to own one of your pieces just for the “I spy” enjoyment of trying to find the repair.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
If I lived closer I would buy this table in a heartbeat. It’s beautiful!!!
Thank you very much! 🙂
As always, you did a fantastic job rescuing a beautiful piece and returning it to usability. I hope whoever gets this appreciates it for many years to come, because you've given it a lovely refresh!
Thank you very much!
Can’t wait!! Glad y’all are safe from the storms recently…
Thank you so much!
Really enjoyed this one especially. I am a senior and my parents had a radio like that when I was a child. Thank you.
Sometimes the smallest pieces are the biggest pain in the a## i feel like it turned out amazing and all your hard work was worth all the effort!! Thank you for hosting this challenge!!!
You're so welcome!
You are a true artist. And giving your talent to help charity makes you a true humanitarian.❤
Thank you so much! 🙂
Love the darker colour that you gave it. It made for a far richer-looking finish than I believe it would have had when new. It really elevated that little table. If some of the pieces you've worked on could feel and talk like humans, I'm sure many of them would suffer from imposter syndrome. They were never intended to look that good; and yet, here they are. :D
Haha!! I love it!! Thank you, as always!!! ❤️
@TranscendFurnitureGallery thanks for giving back to the community. I live by the motto "see a need, fill a need " when I can.
You have a real talent for creating woodgrain. I've been struggling with making the wood grain on palm-trees in my bathroom. The way you did this...something clicked for me...thanks
Angie, I never get enough of watching you work and seeing the magic of the "reveal". Kudos!
Thank you so much!
Angie, I swear!!! You worked magic on that side table!! You are an artist.
Thank you so much! 😊
You absolutely did a wonderful job on this table. Try not to be so hard on yourself give yourself some grace it IS beautiful. sometimes we need to tell ourselves. It’s good enough I know it’s hard. Take care of yourself sweetie. Stay safe and know in the back of your head everything you do for these charities is absolutely awesome never stop. you make a difference and that’s what counts.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
That was amazing.
Well that's the best anyone could have done, even if it wasn't what you had envisaged. Patience is a virtue, so well done .
Thank you kindly!
It may have been a pain to refinish, but I think it turned out great! Your talent and determination are awesome! Love your work.
I'm so glad!! 😀
It may not be your favorite piece, but you brought it back to life and allowed its beauty to shine. The buyer undoubtedly will be very happy that you engaged in this resurrection. And that you did it for charity! Wow! You totally rock!
Wow, thank you!
Love your tenacity ❤
Thank you very much!
Well done Angie! You have more patience than I have! It looks super and has gone to support a charity. Well worth all your effort in doing it.
Thank you so much for that!
After watching all of the nine other entrants, Angie, if you are taking user comments/votes into consideration at all, I am voting for Maria and her restoration. Although the painted pieces are all well done, all quite different and a major change, I simply prefer the wood to the paint. Once again, thanks for sponsoring a challenge supporting charities. 💗💖
You're very welcome! Thank you so much!
That poor little table with probably a mystery meat aftermarket finish! I am impressed nevertheless that you didn't back away from it. You saved a piece from an early death and you helped another being in need, maybe more.
Thank you for all you do!
You're so welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
It’s a cute little end table. These older pieces tend to be light and easy to move compared to modern furniture which tends to be massive (and yet the end tables today have very little storage space)!
Thank you so much! 😊
You knocked that one out of the park!!! You conquered the side table!!! It’s stunning!!!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
3 hours to remove the finish? whoa …repairing the damaged corner ..truly in a art form..and for charity..good on you !
Thank you so much for watching!
I think this came out gorgeous.💕💕💕💕
Thank you so much! 😊
Nor every rescue piece will be your fave but honestly it's a very cute table and apartment dwellers love little tables like that. ❤
Thank you so much for watching!
I could see this little table as an entry table for a small home or apartment. A cute lamp, plant and catch all for keys, etc. would be perfect.
Thank you kindly!
You have a lot of patience 😂 it looked great when it was finished ❤🇬🇧🇬🇧
I try!! 😂 This piece sure tested it though!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery you did a grand job xx
It just goes to show that you never can tell what is going to be easy peasy and what is going to be a royal pain in the you know where! But your final product was lovely, as all your pieces are and your narrative was extremely instructive! Thanks.
Thank you very much! 🙂
So. Much. Work. But for a great cause, and good on you for sticking with it. Someone will use and love that table for many years to come. Thanks for hosting the challenge. It's amazing what people can and WILL do to help others.
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Wise words from my father whenever I was being a perfectionist over something I was adept at (usually music) but those appreciating my talent weren't: "Nobody will know. They're just glad you're doing it."
It looks beautiful, and I'm sure someone will treasure it!
Thank you very much!! ❤️
Hi Angie! Wow, that stand was a real hassle for you. I wouldn't be surprised to see you throwing up your hands and painting it. OR taking it out on the driveway and running over it until the whole thing was a pile of splinters! I think it turned out quite pretty. Good move to donate it and the dressing table. Little huggies for the bun-buns! 🐰🐰🐰💓💓💓
Thank you so much! 🙂
Thank you for your videos. I came on YT to learn how to restore furniture. I have seen 3 YTubers - one is flipping furniture without a skerrick of personal protection worn. No love in it at all. The other she was great to watch because they were beginner videos. And then there is you.. I see how much you love what you are doing - it is absolute passion and it comes through. You have respect for the process and the furniture.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Probably a 'hostess' table where cooked meats are cut on it in flat bottom hot trays/platters. A restaurant or dining room side table so to speak. Treated with very thick heat-resistant lacquer. The scooped edge frame of the top catches any errant cooking liquids when serving from it.
No, it's nowhere near tall enough for that. Thanks so much for watching!
🎀🌼🤍You're so kind with your charity and bunnies 🤍🌼🎀
Awe, thank you very much! I appreciate that!
You are a trooper Angie. I would have tossed that nightmare to the curb. But once again you pulled off a miracle. Great job.
It nearly ended up there. Lol
Considering what you started with...Wow! So happy you got through the storm!
Thank you so much!
That was a very tough piece!! I wonder if someone could have put epoxy resin on that top? I love watching your videos, and love to see you donate to the charities. Y’all are good people!!😊❤
I'm still not sure what it was, I just hope to never deal with it again! 😉
Am watching another video where you talk about doing a skill share to build your self confidence. You are my favorite furniture restorer to watch. Your steps are clear, you point out problematic areas and your taste level is elegant. But, my favorite reason is you have a lovely voice to listen to. Soft, liquid, musical vouce. I also value your commitment to saving these old pieces and bunny rescue. Thank you for serving in a modest sustainable way.
I'm so glad you enjoy my content. Thank you so much for watching!
Once again you have saved a lovely piece of furniture. Or should I say, you've made some furniture into a lovely piece. Awesome job! The bunnies are so sweet. Oh and give your kitties a smooch for me too.
Thank you very much!
Angie, you really did do an amazing job with that little table. Love your work, your thoughtfulness to details and your generous heart. Love to you, your partner, the kitties and the bunnies! ❤❤
Thank you so much!
I would have had the FLAME THROWER out at about 3rd try….. you are so patient and kind.
Awe, thank you! 😀
Always a pleasure… beautiful…
You certainly are quite talented… bravo…
Thank you so much 😀
Love that you do charity fund raisers sand I love the bunnies. Great work. Enjoy life.
Thank you so much!
My Mom had a table like that as well as the matching coffee table when I was growing up at home. Lovely!
I love it!
It might not be your favorite but somebody will love it and it will live on. You saved it from the landfill so in my opinion you're both winners. Big thumbs up!
Exactly, it's got a new chance at life now. Thank you so much for watching! 😃
I hope the bunnies raise lots of money. :). Lovely even if you weren't happy with it! You did amazing on the painted wood grain!
Thank you so much for watching!
Could totally relate with the stripper! You did great with the table top corner - I couldn’t see any damage. Nice work! Thanks for hosting this challenge!
You're so welcome! Thank YOU for watching! 🙂
I’m just so happy it was saved from landfill. You did a great job Angie😊
Thank you! 😊
I totally understand that this table was not easy Angie but, you did an amazing job with it! You never disappoint us. 👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Your frustrations made for a very educational video, for which we thank you. And your hard work made for a lovely piece of furniture, the sale of which will help disabled people who cannot do for themselves, for which we also thank you. You totally rock.
You are so welcome Deb! Thank YOU for leaving this comment. ❤️
You did a beautiful job. I actually like it a lot.
Thank you very much! 😀 I actually know the woman who bought it and she LOVES it.
Watching you deploy your artist skills in copying woodgrain always amazes me. I would have tossed that tabletop before long before it gave up that crazy old finish. Great job!
Wow, thanks! 😀
It looks great Angie! Someone will love it in their home. You have such a good heart! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you. You did not gloss over, give up, do the easy solution. That is how we learn, not for this single piece but as a way to learn discipline to keep on going. We will need this in more than the veneer of life, Friend.
You're so welcome Nancy! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! 😀
I think it turned out very nice. Love the color and so nice of you to donate the piece. You find the greatest furniture to flip. Makes me want to go digging through thrift shops again. I always thought searching was one of the best parts of flipping.
Thank you so much for watching!
You showed that table who’s boss!! 👏🏻👏🏻
I tried Nancy, I really did! 😀
I could feel your pain. Well done great job. 😊
Thank you so much! 🙂
It is frustrating when things don't go the way you planned, but it is a very cute pice and it turned out very nice. Thank you for giving your time and items to good causes.❤
You are so welcome!
As always, you did an excellent job! Well Done.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for mirroring a kind and loving heart for all of us to see! As always, beautiful video....
My pleasure! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I was excited recently to learn you are Nova Scotian-like me! (Northern Cape Breton). They were awesome videos of the lightening strikes!
I'm fairly obsessed with your work and videos. The editing is phenomenal-such talent all the way around! Yours is the best entertainment on RUclips! I love what you're all about. Thank you for all you do ❤
Glad you like them! Thank you so much for this fantastic comment!! I really appreciate it.
Given the challenge of the finish on the top and the damage... you did a wonderful job and the table will be useful for whoever buys it. Well done!
Thank you very much!
Ok Superwoman!! You faced your cryptonite and conquered it!! Wear your cape with pride!!
Haha thank you! 🙂
3 hours! that would have taken me a year and probably still end up in the trash. Thank you for sharing, your videos show me more and more tricks!
You're so welcome!! 😃
I think it came out beautiful ❤️
I really appreciate that! 🙂
I always learn something from your videos and appreciate all that you do from helping the bunnies to keeping usable things (which you transform in beauty) out of the landfills.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
It came out very nice , and it's for a good cause as well !
Yes, thank you!! 🙂
Wow. It is fun to see that there are pieces that challenge the master. I was happy that you stuck with it. Makes me think that the top maybe was refinished, perhaps to waterproof it. Always a pleasure to see your show.
Thank you! Cheers!
Fabulous, your a patient finisher. Good luck. I love watching you.
I'm so glad you're enjoying my content! Thank you so much!
Looks like maybe it had a linseed oil undertone to try and seal it, and it never cured before a toner finish was added over it.. very tough to remove. As always Angie, job well done. You do our profession justice with your logical approach. Respect.
Could be! Thank you so much for watching!
Angie: I’ve never seen a stubborn stain like that before. However, the table did turn out really good. It will look fine in someones’ home. Carol from California
Thank you so much Carol!
Wow, how did you even pull this off?!!! I know I say this every time, but you are amazing, not only in your skills, but in your heart ❤. love all that you do and that you contribute to this world!
Thank you so much 😀
Very great info! Love this makeover and thanks so much for hosting!! 😊
You're so welcome!!
Nice save, and by the looks of whatever that finish was, the naughty words were well in order ! 🙂.
Thank you very much! 🙂
Just finished watching all the videos. What a talented, versatile and inspiring group. Great way to spend an evening.
Wow, all of them!! That's a binge! I'm so glad you enjoyed them!
When you have applied paint stripper, take a palstic foil and place it over the freshly coated surface. This binds what is contained in the paint stripper and it works better on the paint surface. And leave it on for 12 hours. Good work … as ever 👍🏽
Circa 1850 only takes about a minute to actually work so it would technically slow me down by covering it. For less potent strippers, it is beneficial though.
Great job again🎉❤️🇨🇦
Thank you 🤗
Bunnies ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Btw, I can't believe how you managed to create wood in that patch! I can't even tell. Amazing!!!
Thank you so much!
Wow just wow! I was thinking sand blasting that thing!😂super pretty!
Thank you so much for watching!
Sometimes things looking easy but the true is often the opposite....but even it is not your favorite piece, it is looking now so much better ! And yes it was not easy but at the end it turn out example off pushing true and keep on going . That is making this table special.even it is not your first choice ! Love the video as always.
Thank you kindly! I'm glad you like how it turned out!
Man, that took a lot to get through!
It didn't turn out how you'd have liked it to and it was a lot of sweat equity for such a small piece, but it went to a good cause and you should feel good about that aspect. Also, thank you for taking us on the journey of some of the struggles, you powered through and it's all we can do. Keep your ultimate goal of less furniture in landfills, donating/charity fundraisers, and your art. Great job. ❤
Thank you so much for watching!
I am happy enough to take it off of your hands. Great work. Known fact: People who cuss like a drunk sailor on shore leave are very, very smart and resourceful.
Haha thank you!
Wow! That finish was a challenge!
Yes it was!
Looks great! Good luck with the bunnies.
Thank you very much! 🐰
I understand your tendency to self criticize - I’m also one of those that fights perfectionist tendencies. In this case tho, I think your criticism is misplaced, or, perhaps, too critical. The table is lovely and shows the love of the process and art that you invested into it. You take each project as a challenge - taking something functional (or potentially so) but old, unattractive, wobbly or broken, definitely unloved, then using skill and creativity make it new again.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Oh Angie, I refinished an exterior door that was in our kitchen,,.which I thought would be “easy breezy”. The finish was that yellow-orangey tan that was popular in the 80’s. It was just like this table. I was ready to put it in the dump. I scraped, I stripped (not me) and I sanded. And then I did it again. I finally got it “good enough” and called it a day. The other side that was in the kitchen looked great painted white. Whew!!!
I felt your pain.
Yikes! So much work for you! I don't blame you one bit, my forearms were on fire.
