So a few days ago as of time of making this video, Akuma won the Tekken World Tour Finals, and thats basically the inspiration for this video because... Well dang Akuma is pretty good yall! Yes I still think Akuma is the most dominant fighting game character of all time, so much so that if MK & SF were to have a crossover game, I'd pit him against Shao Kahn! :)
Yall are sleeping on geese. Geese has been in multiple game franchises too. Fatal Fury, Tekken 7, and king of fighters. Everywhere geese shows up he dominates. And most of the time when you "canonically" beat him its because he went easy on you. Dude also jumped off a 100 story building and still survived the fall.
@@1starfalco1 Yeah. Geese is up there, I mean, how could you not think he's so kool every time he shouts "RAGING STORM!"? I think Akuma edges him out just a bit though imo!
@@UnstableYT-u7kLore wise, probably yes (this is fighting genre were talking about. 90% of the main characters in this genre are gods of space and time at some point). Gameplay wise, not even close. Johnny is way stronger than Liu gameplay wise.
Akuma definitely feels like he has kept his "boss" status through most of his iterations. He's not always "busted", but definitely a force to be dealt with. Like you said, his movelist is just incredibly solid and basically makes him adaptable to almost any situation.
Of course this video will exist in a time capsule of a sort, as when Street Fighter 6 launches, Lily with the monstrously powerful T.Hawk DNA flowing in her veins will become the most powerful video game character ever.
@@bodhimind108 i'd certainly be an option. Right now for SF6 I am good with Honda, Marisa, or Manon which is way better than most fighting game launches as lots of times its hard for me to find even 1 character I care about. I think Akuma's a brilliant character! Not just gameplay-wise, but even in the more casual side of things, he's been someone to be feared, as he will destroy fighters who aren't careful against him! I especially love his signature super, Shun Goku Satsu/Raging Demon! >:3
Gotta say, I'm kinda terrified of what Akuma is gonna be like, when he makes his grand appearance in SF6. He already has twice the amount of options and abilities of a standard shoto; with everyone getting pretty much everything they've ever had and then some, Akuma's kit is gonna be INSANE! I think it's safe to say he'll have his VS1 back, but what else could they even add on top of that? It's gonna be wild!
Funny enough,Akuma being someone who loves to travel around in search of a worthy rival to fight to the death, just about every crossover appearance(Minus MVC3 I feel) he was either solid, good or broken af. CVS2,Tekken 7,SF vs Xmen,if you wanna stretch it then Asuras wrath. Even when he is in a game where he is balanced to the point of being seen as one of the weakest shotos in the game like SFV,he still can be scary and can do some nutty stuff regardless of it,even still being used to this day even if rare. I always loved him for his design and Shun Goku Satsui,so no matter what I will main him in any game I play that he is in lol.
Akuma has been a badass since ever and still is a great character. I like how he's got a stricter code along the years, but one question remains unanswered: can you imagine him traveling from one place to another looking for his opponents? I mean, SF happens across the world. Try figuring out Akuma taking a bus, a flight, ordering lunch, I don't know (easter eggs on SF Victory anime don't count, lol!) Does he tatsumaki himself from one continent to another?
@@stilmaho one thing I forgot to mention: is Akuma possibly the only ginger born in Japan? Can't say I remember seeing any before, people who dyed their hair red obviously doesn't count
He travels by dominating and riding various beasts of the land and sea, duh. And when he absolutely needs speed, ofc he takes the train/plane. But he doesn't buy tickets and sit in coach. He sits *on* the plane.
Its so funny to me how akuma and baiken guilty gear feel like parallels, treated in similar ways, both started as a secret bossalways locked and treated as a bonus in some way who have become always dlc characters who are always good, baiken isnt always top tier in her home series. but she's always high up there (also kinda low health but not infamously low like chipp or millia) and like akuma in tekken, is really good in samsho as a guest character.
Very dominant character but well deserved. Brilliant design, great move set, iconic super but balanced with low health and difficult to master. Loved and played by many but played well by few. Can’t wait to see him in sf6.
6:40 In a way, Nago works with your point. Considering how much he breaks the mold of big, high health, slow characters, he shows why most characters that fit that description usually aren't that good.

This is a cool video idea. I was gonna say Akira is pretty fucking good everytime he shows up but you made that point. He even was used in MVC2 and 3. Akuma truly not to be messed with.
Akuma's power in tekken is not because of his moveset but because of the things that u can do at 2d game which makes it different than 3d for example special move cancelling ur normals which makes u capable of doing high damage punish from a single jab
I was just thinking about Akuma so what timing lol. That saint cola tweet reminded me that Akuma is almost always REALLY strong. Like it’s part of the character at this point
Some games aside, I've always had the running inside joke that whenever Akuma showed up in a game, there was always a penchant for crossovers and cameos, making him the nexus of worlds colliding.
Also, to use your words, a 1 off fighting game character who was surprisingly dominant was bayonetta. If you want to ask yourself this one question. Was the smash 4 bayo moment a rage quit or an optimal start that neither player knew how to change because the start was so strong that the first player to make a move loses, like a vergil moment if you know the style that his is based on.
I feel like you could have mentioned Akuma's other appearances. Could have made a whole thing of discussing their differences. Like mentioning akuma in Cyber Bots or X-Men Children of the atom or how he fared when made by SNK for CVS Chaos. He's in a shit ton of games and he stays the same but also changes a ton between games.
Gouki (and Gouken ultimately) from being inspired by an old EGM prank has gone on to become one the most popular fighting game characters of all time. I'd say he's done well for himself.
Like you mention, Akuma's drawback of having a low life total often is barely a drawback at all; sure, you technically die a touch earlier, but if you have so many tools that your opponent never gets that touch, does it really matter? I can't definitively say if Akuma is the most dominant character of all time, but if someone declared as such, I couldn't give a counterpoint.
Now, we can play as Shin Akuma on Ultra SF2. The way to do it is super clevar. Highlight Ryu's first costume color, Sagat's 9th color, Bison's 8th color, and Ken's 7th color. then hit L and R while highlighting the random character select slot. That reference flew over my head when entering the code the first time.

Great video and I’m in agreement with everything you say here. That moment in Turbo was just mind blowing when you thought it was a Bison showdown and in comes the new guy and toasts him in the blink of an eye 😮. Since then Akuma has always had that signature special (best portrayed in SFV) , which I don’t think I’ve ever blocked (can you?), but as a fighting game fan and player I’ve always considered him a little cheap but at the same time have a lot of admiration for players that can pull off his harder move sets. Yes he’s powerful as hell but you have to be pretty good to make the most of him so not so cheap after all. Sadly though it means a lot of players levitate to characters that win, top tier, and a lot of other fighters just get left at the road side, unchosen and unloved 😢. I personally like to see a lot more balance in a roster but am currently mixing it up with Akuma in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and loving in 😎💪🦎💯
Lmao no. Even lore wise, Sagat was one of bison's henchmen. He is a force to be reckoned, but far from being the most powerful. Gill, bison, oro and Akuma eclipse him
During his time in Tekken 7 Akuma has received more adjustments than *any* character in the roster and he's been top 10, at worst, pretty much the entire time. I don't know if he'd be as bad if he wasn't based on his SF4 iteration, but as he stands now, if he's got two bars, your losing 90% off a 10 frame punish. For context, everybody not named Geese gets around 15% in the same situation.
I think an argument can be made for Fox in smash. His level of power and prevalence in Melee was so great that even as a mid to high tier in all other games he's unmistakably a dominant presence you can't miss.
He is my favorite charater is stf and in the fg universe, i can't wait for him to be show in stf6, i want to see hes moves and what new thing will be added or change, hope he have his own stage.
One of the best fighting game characters in any fighting game period. He is fun to fight against for me, cuz his moves are so badass and he is a challenging opponent. Props to my friend for making the fight against Akuma so damn good

Rooflemonger I was walking down the stairs listening to this video, and when you pulled the fucking Chris Chan Documentary intro I straight up froze in my tracks. You can't just DO THAT. LMAO!
They even nerfed his base specials in SFV and he was still badass. Couldn't throw air fireballs from netural or backward jump, and his ground fireballs don't go full screen. Driving home the rushdown aspect to him even more of wanting to get in on you. lol.
Akuma isnalways one of my favorite characters to use jist imagine goong to gg or kof to fight rugal again or he get a invite to samurai showdown or even to jump to melti blood to show a real demon
Capcom made an iconic boss character which is so iconic that even in other games he was respected. The very first fighting character to cross other games.
Hey there rooflemonger! I enjoy your content so much, especially some of the videos covering historic developments and background on mechanics and so on. Now, this doesn't really fit this video on Akuma, but I've been wondering for some time now about the archetypes in fighting games. There are a lot of videos to be found on RUclips explaining which archetypes there are, what grapplers do, strengths & weaknesses of zoners, and so on - but I haven't found one that tries to go deeper into why or how they became the established core concepts characters seem to be designed around in most 2D fighters nowadays, and if there are fighting games that try or tried to go a different route. So, I guess my questions are something like this: Why did these archetypes become the standard of most fighting games? Is it just because someone (probably SF^^) set the standard and everyone else decided this is established now and it works, we're going to copy this? And are there games that tried to stray from that formula, try entirely different approaches - and how did they do? I feel like my questions might sound confusing and unclear, but I hope you know what I'm getting at :D Anyway, I was hoping you could shed some light on this, possibly even in a video, I think this might be interesting content for others in the FCG as well! Thank you so much and keep doing what you're doing!
I personally like his simple philosophy of being the master of the fist. In being the strongest period. This is the who split Ayer's Rock and caused a volcanic eruption just because he wanted to.
Akuma is the most formidable fighter in the street fighter universe, he’s even a more dangerous fighter in the right hands of a player who knows how to use him. 😎✌🏾👊🏾💯🥋
Fun fact: Akuma has gotten nerfed multiple times throughout SF4 lifespan and somehow remained a very good character. I remember my reaction being "How is this character still so strong? This demon just won't die!"
re: Street Fighter III series, he's not dominant in 3rd Strike, but he was EXTREMELY dominant in 2nd Impact. 2I Akuma was the most busted Street Fighter version of the character aside from Super Turbo. His dive kick was faster than any Yun ever had, was safe on block AND parry, beat out almost every move in the game and led to big damage and stun combos if it hit, which it would often. Oh and his SA3 was actually very strong in 2I, and his SA2 was also better in 2I.
Akuma is the definition of high skill high reward even if he was overpowered in some games not all. You still need to work well with him ie execution, reading opponents, hit confirming etc.
Akuma in tekken got to bring over all of his unique advantages and mechanics from street fighter while not sacrificing much by way of tekken mechanics. So he has the ability to play a completely different meta than everyone else. Jumping over highs and mids. Invincible wakeup options. 10f launchers. Low combo starters. Safe i12 CH high crushing launchers. Yet he can still do all the things tekken characters can do (with the exception of rage drives)
I think the only character to boast a record as impressive as Akuma's is probably Zero from Mega Man X. He's been in 4 fighting games so far (Marvel 3, Marvel Infinite, Tatsunoko vs Capcom 2, and SNK vs Capcom) and has been top 3 in every single one. He hasn't been in as many games as Akuma, but he's never known what it's like to be anything less than top tier.
He's been my favorite character since I was a kid in the '90s, playing SFA3 vs the CPU on my PlayStation. When I got my hands on SFIV, I learned the true kara demon (easier than expected, on arcade stick) and the 6MP-into-demon fake out, went online, found a flowchart Ken, got him to block the 6MP faint, landed the ultra, won the match … and retired from online play undefeated 😌
every franchise respect akuma cuz of the story, they made him kick asses of main tekken characters . also keep in mind that it is one of the hardest characters to master in fighting games, requires perfect amount of flawless execution to do those full hp combos moves or whatever you see in the tournaments.
I know no one here would care but part of me would like to see what would happen if Akuma were playable in Genshin Impact. The one guest character they had and they barely tried and half the characters there they get it right half the time. I'm just curious if they'd continue his reign of terror or nerf him into oblivion.(I know this is solely fighting games but I'm just curious. Sorry. I'll shut up now.)
I'd say its not just about having more options but also having good reward on those options, and Akuma has fat damage on top of his many options. If you have a low health character that can run rings around you but they have to hit you 5+ times and you only have to hit them once or twice, they can definitely drop down some tiers, such as chipp being mid-high in strive because his overwhelming offense requires him to always be in arms reach of getting hit and you have multiple opportunities to catch him on a mistake. A low health character can be balanced, if its made sure their reward is also factored in balance around their many options.
I have a cool memory of whiffing SF4 ultra demon and then doing super demon for the win. I'd probably never be able to do that again, but I felt like a boss.

Sadly though it means a lot of players levitate to characters that win, top tier, and a lot of other fighters just get left at the road side, unchosen and unloved 😢. I personally like to see a lot more balance in a roster but am currently mixing it up with Akuma in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and loving in 😎💪🦎💯
Alpha 3 Akuma was my favorite one.
I know it may be a strange opinion but I’ve always thought of Sagat as the strongest of all time. He literally has a move for every and any situation.
We're lucky they didn't decide to adapt the SFV version of himself. Or it would've been a whole lot worse.
At ten frames most of the cast (read, minus akuma) at best gets a 112 jab punish.
You're not losing 90% health off of a 10f.
Stop spreading misinformation.
You can get to half health with walls present though.
Zero (from the megaman games) is in very few fighting games. But was a top tier in literally every single one of them.
Hah! I was certainly not expecting a Geno Samurai reference.
Just recently got into SF and instantly gravitated to Akuma. His V design reminds me a lot of Wukong which I i love.
Akuma is just about everywhere. He can't be rid of. Like you said in your old Capcom vs SNK 2 video
One of the best fighting game characters in any fighting game period. I never played as Akuma but my Friend always Plays as Akuma, and when im fighting my friend and his Akuma, our battles are legendary.
He is fun to fight against for me, cuz his moves are so badass and he is a challenging opponent. Props to my friend for making the fight against Akuma so damn good
8:13 man seeing SFIV combos still make me feel like a shitter lol. I can't even do the links properly half the time so seeing the fadc's in the middle like that is so impressive
Rooflemonger I was walking down the stairs listening to this video, and when you pulled the fucking Chris Chan Documentary intro I straight up froze in my tracks. You can't just DO THAT. LMAO!
3:25
Aaaaaaaaaaaand subbed. Great reference right there.
you must defeat liquid chris to have a chance
They even nerfed his base specials in SFV and he was still badass. Couldn't throw air fireballs from netural or backward jump, and his ground fireballs don't go full screen. Driving home the rushdown aspect to him even more of wanting to get in on you. lol.
Akuma isnalways one of my favorite characters to use jist imagine goong to gg or kof to fight rugal again or he get a invite to samurai showdown or even to jump to melti blood to show a real demon
Thank you for the support! 🙏
Capcom made an iconic boss character which is so iconic that even in other games he was respected.
The very first fighting character to cross other games.
Akuma created that entire heat system in Tekken 8 😂
Akuma showed up with meter, now everyone has meter.
More like Geese did
@@kemalerdemsahin410 Akuma started it
Eliza: 😮
Akuma vs Goku without plot armour 😂 I dare too say he’s gonna be a problem.
All we need is him in mortal kombat imagine him performing fatalities and blood when he hits
Thank you so much and keep doing what you're doing!
that chris chan documentary opening caught me off guard lmao
As a lifelong Akuma main I thank you rooflemonger. SHUN GOKU SATSU FTW!!!
His moveset and in game lore demands him to be broken or a top tier in pretty much any game he is in
I personally like his simple philosophy of being the master of the fist. In being the strongest period. This is the who split Ayer's Rock and caused a volcanic eruption just because he wanted to.
uh well actually Nagoriyuki is good in Strive and he has high health
Akuma really is an evil chad. Great topic, great video
OK I totally lost it and spit my drink out at the Chris Chan bit 😂
I feel like this is almost a statement rather than a question with all this evidence 🧐
Thats the secret to a good youtube video shhh👼
Akuma is the most formidable fighter in the street fighter universe, he’s even a more dangerous fighter in the right hands of a player who knows how to use him. 😎✌🏾👊🏾💯🥋
Heyachi: I'm the king of iron fist.
Akuma: hold my franchise for a moment, gonna jump to the other one.
Akuma design appearance is 10/10 and his kit gameplay is 10/10
So yeah with both things being good he becomes popular very fast
Fun fact: Akuma has gotten nerfed multiple times throughout SF4 lifespan and somehow remained a very good character.
I remember my reaction being "How is this character still so strong? This demon just won't die!"
3:25 bruh not the chris-chan reference😭
re: Street Fighter III series, he's not dominant in 3rd Strike, but he was EXTREMELY dominant in 2nd Impact.
I choked on a handful of blueberries when the Chris-Chan docu intro started playing
I’m at the beginning when you said “Super Secret Boss” I thought you were going to admit to Super Saiyan
If they’d blocked the first hit of the overhead then they would of just jumped out of the demon setup so you’re obviously chatting shit
every franchise respect akuma cuz of the story, they made him kick asses of main tekken characters . also keep in mind that it is one of the hardest characters to master in fighting games, requires perfect amount of flawless execution to do those full hp combos moves or whatever you see in the tournaments.
Due to his appearance count yes but some contenders I know of are, Jin Kazama, Fox, Iori, and Akuma himself.
Akuma was the first crossover character in fighting game, which makes him the face of the fighting game genre.
I think he is a fan favorite!
He da MAN that stand out of all.
He like the first Demon God in fighting game and we love it!
The SNK bosses would be another option for most consistently busted.
Like Omega Rugal or whatever.
But yeah he's nuts.
Hi, I hope you have a good day.
Well thank you very much for that! You as well friend
