Hello Brandy[ Slay With Brandy ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Believe me, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what this band can do, no two songs sound the same and Floor is one of the best female vocalists out there today, she is truly amazing. Floor can sing in most musical styles including pop, classical, opera, metal, and even death growls

This execution in particular was flawless, pretty hard to do in a live metal song of 10 mins like this, the song itself is amazing too, like the name says, it's a score

Same here Allen. I hadn't gone to a concert in 20+ years, but saw NW in NYC in May 2022, and The Warning in July 2022 in New Hampshire.

One thing I can say about the lead singer Floor is she is a generational talent that doesn't come along often. She is insane live. I saw them last year and she did not miss one note and was pitch perfect for a show that lasted almost 2 hours. She held a high note for almost 15secs without her voice breaking.Just the stamina was incredible and then you throw in the connection she and the whole band for that fact has with the crowd and it was a concert like no other I have been to.
This song came in 1 hour of a 1hour 40minute concert. The whole concert is EPIC!!!

Being from America myself, I do understand most American reactors mentioning Amy Lee in these types of video clips only because she is the only one that would even come half close to the multitude of amazing talented lead vocalists over seas - she was one of the few that we were exposed to - metal music, in Europe, has certainly eclipsed so much music created in the USA - I walked away from the bands that I listened to at home about about 25 years ago and 99% of my CD collection and links on You Tube are now of this type of music coming out of Europe - Nightwish is from Finland with Floor Jansen from the Netherlands on vocals and the country pf Finland actually embraces their metal bands as some of their greatest national treasures
I just go off of who I know and what sounds similar to me! I honestly have not heard many if not any singers come even close to this women’s level.

I found Floor in her first band, a Dutch band called After Forever, which is another band you will have to look into in the future, and also Nightwish with their original singer, Tarja, about the same time about 22 years ago - since then so many other similar bands from Europe and non America have come to light like Within Temptation, Epica, Ayreon, Floor's second band Revamp, Ukraine's Jinjer, Japan's Love bites and earlier than that it, I was a big fan of X Japan, Whyzdom from France, Ex-Libra, Visions of Atlantis & Sweden's Sabaton (with Floor's husband Hannes on the drums) (so many more) - it is like a whole new world opens up for you
@@SlayWithBrandy Don't take it personally, getting roasted for mentioning Amy Lee. Amy Lee is great and I'm sure she's proud to be included in the same conversation as Floor, even if she's overshadowed by FJ's talents.
Japan does also have a hell of a metal scene, well worth checking out. And of course pretty much every country has something great. Well, I suspect the Vatican isn't the home base of many metal bands 😂

Enjoyed your reaction very much. I don’t often comment on the ‘Amy Lee’ thing as it is a common point of reference for US reactors that don’t know Nightwish, but, without wanting to disrespect Amy Lee, who is a very good singer, Floor’s singing ability is intergalactically good and of an entirely different order to Lee’s.
Floor is definitely in a different league but as a first thought Amy was where my mind went for sure though!
All credit for Amy to be the go-to name for female metal singers for those not immersed in the world of female/fronted metal. Amy's voice is also perfect for Evanescence, Floor would massively overwhelm their style of music. Just a tiny note though...Evenescence are very 90s/00s not 80s

This band is amazing, so many great songs, and they vary in sound from song to song. If you listen anything from this 2013 Wacken concert, or their 2015 Wembly, you will not be disappointed, and that is just the start.
Thankfully I discovered Nightwish and Floor Jansen 14 months ago. Phenomenal.

At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. I've been listening to Nightwish and Floor since 2019. I've subscribed to both of them. You haven't heard anything yet from Floor or Nightwish. Floor's been a professional singer since she was 16 and she turned 42 in Feb. Her husband Hannes is the drummer for a Swedish band called Sabaton. Floor's 1st solo album is out now.

Great reaction, Brandy! Floor really took this song to another level. Met this band when Tarja Turunen the first singer was singing this, the whole album "Once" is amazing: Dark Chest Of Wonders, I Wish I Had An Angel, Nemo, Planet Hell and this song are my favorite.

I'm sure the Nightwish army will show you all of the amazing songs you need to see, but Floor Jansen (Singer) performed "Phantom of the Opera" on a European show called Beste Zangers as a duet with Henk Poort, and they absolutely nailed it. I highly recommend you give that one a go.

My first encounter with Nightwish was around 2002-2003, when they had Tarja as singer. More operatic voice and I really liked it.
However I like Floor even more. She does something to me everytime, both with her voice and stage presence and everything.
For me she is the best singer in the world. You should check her out in Beste Zangers (dutch show), she sings different styles, different languages, she is just amazing. And of course more Nightwish, best band ever. 🤘🤘

Floor saying “you rock” to the crowd at 9:35 after just dominating the stage is one of my favourite things about this performance
I am 57 years old and listened to all kinds of music all my life. Mostly to heavy metal. Now i have discovered nightwish and it feels like coming home. Now I try to find other bands like nightwish but I can not get used to crowling. There are many bands with great music but crowling in many songs. Like Epica for example. Are there any bands like Nightwish with clean voices and no crowling at alll?

For most of the Nightwish fan base these two topics have become kind of a running joke, nothing serious for you to read trough comments (except for some trolls, but you know: it's the internet...🙄).
Unfortunately the US music industry (and news media too, I dare to say) tends to keep all of you oblivious about the musical world outside USA, probably bc they're too scared about losing audience and, most of all, losing MONEY!

Welcome... Being Symphonic Metal, allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the longer, epic, grand production songs like this one, but they also have several of the more classic style heavy metal songs as well... and just about everything in between. They even have songs with a bit of that Celtic Rock kind of vibe. But, no matter what basic style of song they are going for, their songs will all have a touch of those symphonic elements that give the music that signature full, rich sound. As you have probably already heard Nightwish is very much a Live experience. But, not to worry, there has to be about a hundred different Nightwish songs out on RUclips in an Official live video format recorded from a show from somewhere in the world. Again, I say Welcome from the Nightwish Army.

🇫🇮❤This masterpiece has so many key & time signature changes that it's impossible to keep up with them all. The original album version does not have that high note ending, which makes this live performance so epic and memorable. The vocalist, Floor Jansen, is truly a Valkyrie queen of metal and vocals. Amy Lee is good, but nothing compared to the level of talent Floor has with different vocal styles & stage presence.

How are you with doing Hair Windmills? Because when Floor Jansen gets into the beat she's a madwoman with the Hair Windmills. She's a Vocal Valkyrie
You have to remember, Wacken Open Air sells out a year ahead. At that time, Nightwish had a different singer. That singer was fired (the second time that happened) and Floor Jansen was tapped. Some of us weren't sure what we'd get. The previous singer had been disappointing sometimes (not her fault - life). I bought my tickets anyway. Then the previous singer was fired. The current singer had been out of the industry for awhile (personal issues). We weren't fully sure what to expect. WOA 2013 turned out to be EPIC. Again, remember that Floor Jansen was not officially part of the band - she was finishing the tour. At the end of the tour, the band hired her and another person named Troy (who sings but is mostly known for the fact he plays many instruments). Now that you started down this rabbit hole, you'll see a guy's name in your comments - Gabriel. He leads the charge of the Nightwish army. The fans of this band can add lots of subscribers. There are so many songs, that if you played one a week you might not get to the end in a year. Ignore any criticism from commenters about your comparison to Amy Lee - most of those people haven't seen some of her gentle songs. Still, Floor Jansen is a classically trained singer who can hit an F5 and can go so low as to growl - really growl. She doesn't do the growl often - it was saved for a specific song. The keyboard player writes most songs. Not all songs have been played live. One very angry song aimed at the husband of the first singer was never performed - it was just included on an album. Band members have been replaced (mostly due to illnesses: Drum player - Sleep apnea, Bass player - mental illness/depression) recently the band has announced that they will not tour because of needing to recharge. However, they do still plan on working on the next album. Once you're a fan, you are a fan for life. No two songs are the same.

I fit into the old section...I need my walker to get around due to a severely injure lower back and a left knee that was also severely injured playing college football way back in the 1970's! I am a really big guy at 1.98 m or 6'6"! My Nightwish journey started back in January of 2019, and I am a total grandpa fanatic!! I head bang....without much hair...but dang if it isn't fun!
I have plenty of favorite Nightwish songs....okay....I like them all! They're just that good!

welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive).
this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"
this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

@Slay With Brandy: Besides Nightwish, you keep mentioning the 1980s. As such, I have a couple of recommendations:
1) Iron Maiden, Hallowed Be Thy Name, live at the Hammersmith, 1982. This is one of Iron Maiden's iconic performances, when Bruce Dickinson had first joined Iron Maiden. Known as the "Human Air Raid Siren," Bruce has an iconic voice -- and this performance is the "Ghost Love Score" of the 1980s.
2) Brittney Slayes and Unleash the Archers -- Abyss. Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Canada, Unleash the Archers is an award-winning power and speed metal band. In 2021, they won the Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for the album Abyss, which my recommendation is the title track from that album. With a style that is reminiscent of Iron Maiden, I've heard it said that you could drop Unleash the Archers into the mid-1980s, and they wouldn't just compete, they would dominate. And, vocally, Brittney Slayes is one of the few female vocalists I've heard over the last decade that is in the tier with Floor Jansen (who you heard here). Brittney Slayes, like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, has top-tier vocal stamina -- the one area that Floor Jansen, for all her ability, is somewhat lacking in. A mezzo-soprano, Brittney Slayes is known to hit A5 notes like she's ordering coffee -- which is approximately the top of Floor Jansen's range as you heard here.
