DIY End Table

- In this video I show you how to build a small DIY end table. This small table can be used anywhere, but I built this one with the recliner in mind. It sits a little higher than a normal end table to stand above the arms of the recliner, or this would make a great nightstand! Perfect for sitting a drink or device on beside the recliner or tall couch, this table is easy to build. This would even make a great small night stand. This makes a great little ipad table or iphone table beside your chair or couch. This specific table has that farmhouse look with the contrasting base and top but you can paint or stain your table to match your decor. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I laughed when u said 2x2
🤣
I’m glad you have come to embrace the “tuba____” accent…. Keep being awesome!!!
I love it! I like the stand with the X pieces even better! Great job! That coffee table, wow! It looks great! That's exactly what I want! 😊 👍
Thank you. Coffee table video is in the works
Love those patriotic flags my man. Just came across your channel. Def love your content. Before my dad passed he hadn’t taught me everything he knew about woodworking. My dad lived in the south for 20 years. The southern accent is comforting. Right on wa
I miss you doing these videos.
Beautiful
I think it's great. Being a newbie I wish you had plans!!!
This is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Another great video....love the simplicity of the project and I think the added step of the paste wax is an excellent idea.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words.
Just found your RUclips Channel and watched a few vids. I learned a lot of new finish info on this one. Thanks I've been wanting a finish like the wax and dark under tone!
Thank you. Glad it helped!
Tuba x too! 🤣 I love it man! I love the south too! Always wanted to go to the south. We’re in the great northwest! All this kind of barn style furniture let’s out here too. 👍🏽
Awesome 👊🏻
Matt you never disappoint, we’ll done! I feel like I learn a new tip/trick from every video you share...... AND I’m leaning the southern dialect one word at a time 🤣 #tubatwo 👍🏻
lol, thank you!
Another great video! Keep up the great builds!
Thank you
I went and got the dewalt right angle attachment..I love it.!...never would have known about this tool.. these videos are extremely helpful 😊
Awesome
Lookin good as always man. Good video, keep on keepin on
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Hey I found your channel last week. Your videos are great and I have plans to start selling some of these builds on the side.
Thanks for this. Working on the chunky coffee tabke currently.
Nice! Good luck!
Great video, looks great 👍🔥
Thank you! I appreciate that.
I see you also have a very precise fine tuning tool🤣 love your videos actually gave me the confidence/motivation to build a few things and have had a great response!
👊🏻 glad the videos helped
I absolutely love your accent! It’s Tuba Toos! Hahaha I love your projects/videos keep them coming
Thank you
I just saw your channel and thought it was awesome. I’m a beginner to woodworking but I seriously want to start a business doing these kind of projects.
Go for it! I have several woodworking business related videos recently on the channel

Thanks I really appreciate it.
Your building style is very similar to mine. It works well for me and produces good results. Simple but effective. Enjoying the vids. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate that! Thank you
Do you make many tables? I do. I make all different types of tables
Yes sir. I make all different kinds. End tables, dining tables, side tables etc.
I don't think the pocket holes on a table of that size would really cause any issue down the road. Turned out great!
Thank you
Like the music
Thank you
Matt, Hope all is well. At 4:02 of this video you pointed down at a table you had previously built with the X Bracing installed. I was wondering if you could share the measurements for that table. That table looks really nice. You do excellent work, and your videos make things so simple to understand. Thanks again
Hello, I don't remember what that one was, looks to be about 24" tall x maybe 14 or 16" square
Not sure if I missed it in the video but what color stain did you use for the table tops?
How do I get you measurements for the side pieces 1×4 the length of all 4 sides
Any issue with the table tops being rounded over with the router without them being ripped down to have a straight edge? I wanted to use a round over on some of my 2x6 tops but wasn’t sure if they needed to be straight in order to use round over bit with router on them. 🤔
No issues with that, should work fine
What’s the space between legs for the 1x4?
Looks great. How do you like that paint sprayer you use? Any cons to it?
I really like it. I think it’s a great value for what you get. No real cons for what I use it for. Maybe a smoother finish when spraying thicker paints. But that may be in my not thinking it too. I’m very happy with it.
Hi Matt, found your channel and love your videos. They have helped me a lot in starting up doing woodworking. Quick question; I cut up and made up my first tabletop out of 2x8 construction lumber from home depot. I glued it up and joined it with pocket hole screws. I came back to the project 2 days later and my boards are cupped, without a thickness planer Its pretty much trash. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?
Each individual board is cupped or the entire table top? If it is the table top, did you joint the edges (even using a table saw). This is what helped me more than anything. Also alternating the grain will help. If you look at the end of the board you will see the grain pattern, turn one pattern facing down, like frown, the other up, like a smile.
@@731Woodworks each board is cupped. I did not alternate the grain. I didn't hear about doing that until after I did this one. I did join the edges using the method you use on the tablesaw. I think the wood was too wet... I am going to try evening it out with my belt sander but it may be a lost cause.
Yes the wood needs to be dry. That is very important
Great build! Exactly what I’m looking for. One question is why do you use 2 2x6’s for top rather than 1 2x12?
Typically the 2x12 have more cup in them.
Thanks for the feedback. Also, I’m new to woodworking so I do not have a table saw. Any recommendations on how to trim boards prior to glueing? By the way I’m glad I finally found a brother in woodworking. Love many of the shirts I have seen you wear.
I am really glad I found your channel. You build normal things that don’t require industrial equipment, making your projects accessible to people. Your videos are also very well made.
I am planning a build similar to this table in the next week or two and used a Father’s Day gift card to order a palm router. I was wondering how you cut slots for the Rockler fasteners (when you use them). I heard you say that you use a 1/8 bit but what depth setting do you use for the edge guide to get it in the right spot?
Also, I think my wife will want the distressed look with black paint. If I use pine, would you recommend staining it first? If so, what stain do you think would look good under black paint? Thanks for any advice!
Any darker stain should work. However, if you stain it then paint, the paint may not stick to the stained wood very well. May be better to paint the undertone a dark color first? I set the depth according to the clip itself. I just hold it up to the depth gauge and adjust it to the right height.
I appreciate the kind words! I am glad the videos are helpful.!
731 Woodworks Got it. Thank you!
You’re welcome. Let me know if I can help.
How much do sell these for? As a pair
I have another question if you don't mind...at 2:24 in the video you mentioned the gap between the two boards for the apron was 7"...but later in the video you said the lower shelf is 8"...could you clarify which size the apron's and shelf are in the video? if i make the aprons 7", the inside opening for the shelf would also have to be 7"...just trying to find out if the one you made in the video is for the shelf and aprons are 7" or 8". Thanks for the help :)
I must have mis spoke on one of them. But it’s been so long ago I don’t remember which one. Sorry
No worries, I figured since you went into more detail on the lower shelf, using 1x6 and cutting it down to 4” and using two of those, I just went with 8” aprons...boards are all cut now...I’ll be using a domino jointer to assemble them, that will be tomorrow’s task :)
😍
Thank you
Hey! I have a question. You are using an oil based stain and a water based top coat. I thought that you have to match them.
Thanks for the video.
I’ve done it for years with no issues. So long as the oil based stain is dry (8-10 hours)
Thanks!
As a fellow southerner I didn’t notice anything about how you said 2x2.
Try the Figure 8 fasteners by Rockler- easier to put on
Yes sir. I’ve used those before. Thanks for the info.
You'll have to change the back end of the video
I’ll leave it. I wouldn’t want to change it once it’s up. I might try to put them in on the next build video I do.
Heya, I love the end tables, and want to build a set...but I wanted to build one of each of the end tables in this video....I think they look awesome as a pair, instead of just two matching. Do you have a link or video build to the smaller table in this video you could share? or just the dimensions of the legs and aprons...I could figure out the rest from there...Thanks in advance for any help :)
This is the only other small end table video I have. ruclips.net/video/FB_sUSqFxM0/видео.html
@@731Woodworks Thanks so much for the fast response! The table you linked is also super kool, but not the one I was looking for...I'll try to use the image at 5:38 on your DIY end table video and see if I cant come up with the dimensions from there...based on the 26" legs from the taller table, I'd guess the other one is about 24"...which I believe you mentioned you normally did your other end tables at 24" in that video...Thanks again, and love your work!
Sorry, I didn’t make a video on that table.
731 Woodworks no worries I think I can get close using your other video to build one, I think the two as a set would look very nice!
I agree!
Do you think for beginners we can use spray paint for the white?
yes, they can
Do you have your project plans downloadable to be able to build?
sorry, no plans.
Great job. Was the brown color before the white, stain or paint?
It’s spray paint. I linked to it in the description. Rustoleum Espresso Brown.
@@731Woodworks thanks for the link. The tables look really good.
You’re welcome. Thanks!
Great, simple builds for your table.
I noticed you used pocket holes on the sides of the boards. Since the boards expand to their width, and not their length, would you have been better to use your two screws on the end grain sides rather than on the sides of the boards?
BTW, much better on your music. Any music while you are talking is distracting, and you didn't raise the volume so badly during your time lapse. I could enjoy watching your build much more with this project.
Thank you
Thank you
Putting them on the sides where he did will help prevent the top from cupping over time. As far as wood expansion, you are correct - but the pocket holes will provide enough “wiggle” room for the small amount that top will move. If it was a concern, you can always elongate the screw part of the pocket hole with another bit down from the top of the apron.
@@swh213 Thank you.
Is that biscuit white ( color) ? For the white you chose ? Btw, the table looks great. 👍
Thank you. Yes it’s Sherwin Williams biscuit white.
what did you use for the first coat that dark color brown? my wife likes the old age look
Rustoleom espresso brown.
Every time I build a table like this it "racks". I don't see anything you've done that's that much different than me. Any tips? Enjoy your channel a lot.
Thanks. Got a video coming out tomorrow about that exact issue
Booyah
How can I get all the measurements u used?
I don't have any for this build. sorry
Great video and design. It inspired me to build one of my own. Quick question,,, what kind of paint do you use?? Latex, enamel or what??? Specifically the white.
We use Sherwin Williams Pro Classic in biscuit white
731 Woodworks latex?
Yes, it’s an acrylic latex
Thank you brother keep up the great videos!
Impossible without a drill? Could always use good old handraulics with a screwdriver
True :)
I really like these videos but I got one issue and it would be that in the past you said you started with just a jigsaw and a circular saw basically. But alot of these videos use lots of other tools and that's not necessarily bad it just makes it harder for people starting in a similar way you did
I started with 2 drills and a circular saw. By the time I started making videos I had bought a few other things.
#tubatoos
Ha! Thanks!
@@731Woodworks Lol! 😂😂
Love your videos bro. Lots of inspiration
Thanks!!
thanks imma use it as a hookah table but its going to be inside
Sounds good
