Persona 3 is the reason i stopped trying to kill myself 12 years ago when i was bullied... Even to this day It's my one and only game that stays special in my heart. I just graduated as a game programmer major simply cause i want be able to make games that will resonate to others as how Persona 3 resonated with me.
20 years ago, I was a game reviewer. One day, I was assigned Persona 3. I didn't want to play it, and no one else on the staff cared. Barely anyone knew what the Persona series was; Atlus sent me a pre-release build disc, and didn't even bother with a case. I assumed it would be just another JRPG - a genre I didn't care for - and settled in for what I thought would be a bland, tedious grind. Persona 3 proved me wrong in the best way, and made me fall in love with the series. The setting and music grabbed my attention immediately. But what made me stay was the story; it became increasingly clear that all the fantastical and stylish elements aside, this game was a meditation on how to find meaning in life despite the inevitability of death. No other game did that 20 years ago, and I can't think of any game that's done so since. It's a lesson that I'm still learning, all these years later. Anyway, you cried so much in these final hours. But save some of those tears for the DLC; The Answer will come eventually...
@@avocado1845 I gave it a 9/10. The biggest problem with the original P3 was that you couldn't manually control the party. Even with tactics settings, it made the game far, _far_ more tedious than it had to be. The visuals were a little bland as well. The story was excellent, though only a few characters really appealed to me. Once a review copy for P4 was up for grabs, I immediately jumped on it; in a single sitting, I burned through it until the penultimate member of the team joined. It was such a huge improvement, and I never went back to P3. I may play Reload someday, though.

I could (and have!) write for hours about P4. It's one of my all-time favorites, and that's really saying something considering how many games I've played. But I won't spoil anything; you'll understand when you see it. Once you're done with that, I highly recommend the P3/4 crossover spinoffs; the Arena/Ultimax fighting games in particular are the direct continuations of both stories. They're definitely worth watching the story modes at least. And yeah, I'll probably pick up Reload once it goes on sale.
Persona 3 is not depression, it is the cure for it. It gives people the the will and desire to live life through to it's end and value the most important parts of it, the love we share, the experiences that give us fulfillment, the tragedies we face, the happiness we bring to ourselves and others. It is beautiful enough to turn a nihilist into someone who finds meaning.
Someone long ago once said Burn My Dread, the original intro, was a song from Makoto's perspective. While Memories of You, the ending, was obviously from Aegis's perspective. Thanks Atlus, you broke my heart ever since 2009 and I love it. 😊👍

I'm guessing the unknown sender is probably Ryoji. Makoto looked at the music box Ryoji gave him right before he got the text. And if you go up to the music room before that, he mentions how he remembers a melody being played there once and how it's going to be with him forever. But that aside, this was an amazing game. And an amazing remake. Love the Persona series so much

The ending of this game tore me to shreds man. A game hasn’t made me this emotional since Red Dead redemption 2. But I’m still so so glad I played it. It’s become without a doubt one of my favorite video games. And Makoto Yuki I feel is one of the greatest protagonists ever. P3R was my first ever persona game and I’m honestly hesitant to play any of the others because of the extremely high bar this one set for me. Update: Bought Persona 5 Royal the other day. I’m gonna try my hardest not to compare it to P3R while playing.
hahahaha, that happened to me, I started with Persona 3 Fes, and the game impacted me so much and I liked it so much that when I played Persona 4 I felt it several steps down in quality, the emotional moments didn't make me feel anything and the characters didn't I thought they were so good. but in the end persona 5 came out and I was able to enjoy it a lot, pretty close to the feeling that persona 3 left me.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it this much ❤ I played the games in order (p3, p4, p5) and while P3 remains my favorite, I enjoyed the others as well. They're definitely worth your time if you go into them knowing the vibes and overarching thematic goals (and now, graphics) are different. I hope you give them a chance!
@@alejandrovaldez4528well each Persona isn't gonna present the same things. Persona 4 has its moments but death and acceptance wasn't its theme. Naturally, Persona 3 displays the idea that although things perish and die, it's not about death but about what lies ahead and cherishing memories but knowing you can move forward to better days. It was about appreciating life and not taking those beautiful moments for granted Persona 4 was about searching for the truth and accepting it, even the ugly sides, no matter how much it may hurt or how scary it can be, while also setting you free
@@alejandrovaldez4528 can very much relate to this. P4 felt incredibly deflated to me after playing P3P. I still enjoyed all the individual elements in P4 as I did in P3 but the story definitely felt shallow in comparison. There's this saying that the first Persona you play most likely ends up being your favorite and I think I agree. Having said that P3-5 are all easily in my top 20 games of all time (with P3 being number 1).
This game was just delivering so many emotions non-stop since october and all the way until the end. When the aria of the soul started playing in the final battle I cried (and the full song itself is amazing, it just kept on going). Then Burn my Dread... And then Memories of You. Makoto has to be my favourite Persona protagonist now, I didn't expect much since community really twisted my idea of his character to a basic "I don't care", so I was so fuckin surprised to find out that he is actually the most caring Persona protagonist. But the game is just so painful, yet beautiful and inspiring. I was expecting to immediately play P3P for FeMC, but now I just can not bring myself to, knowing the ending An incredible fucking game, I am so glad it is my last main series Persona game, that was such a finale...
Thank you for appreciating Aigis. I was watching someone else incessantly complain about her role in the ending. Her journey parallels Makoto's IMO and I couldn't imagine anyone else delivering the ending monologue!
They must be a Yukari lover, they tend to be the more hostile towards Aigis because of how their role into the story matters. It’s like the Tifa/Aerith argument over and over again.
Back in the P3Portable you could have the ending with someone else rather than Aigis. Honestly I think that one is better suited and rewarding considering you could have bonded with someone else. This ending with Aigis is only really satisfying if you decided to pursue a romantic route, otherwise it feels out of place if you rejected her for someone else.
@@LCardosed92 I disagree , the only people that to say this are the ones who view this ending as a romantic when it's not, this ending is the conclusion to her arc throughout the story and her bond to the main character, which is true regardless if you pursue her SL or not and is the reason why she's has the final scene with him in the first place. But yes, the romance option in portable is neat too
It's actually just all about what it means to live for aigis. It's never romantic but players especially those who allegedly ship aigis and Makoto romanticized the final scene. It's never romantic at all
@@theadmiral4157 my comments TL'DR, sometimes people yap too hard its not helping their case. To each their own, in my honest opinion because it can be interpreted in both platonic and romantic lenses. Sometimes people just overexert their opinions which is very bad and sad. Case being people who didn't understand why Aigis had to be the one with Makoto in the rooftop, the people who heavily romanticize the ending to the point other possibilities are invisible to them (hell, even Aigis acknowledged that she "isn't the only one who could do this") and probably other things in the extreme ends of the spectrum.
You pointed out perfectly what happened between Aigis and Makoto in regards to their confidant, Makoto was still waiting in his room when the end of year ceremony had already begun... If Aigis didn't come to him he probably would've stayed there and died alone
I highly doubt that. The only reason he hung on so long was to complete his promise with his friends so if anything he would have died alone on the rooftop.

Yes, maybe he still planned to go to the roof anyway, but that leaves the question of why he was still in his room at that time, instead of going to school with them and skipping the ceremony, like in the movie. I think he could've easily realised that he wasn't gonna hold on for much longer, and didn't think honoring the promise was worth making them more worried than they already were the day before... Day he spent basically saying goodbye to everyone, after a whole month of seemingly being the only one to remember anything. Instead of risking randomly dying on the way to the school, or for them to learn about it after random people on the street or school find his body, and that Aigis gave him the final push to still go for it anyway. I think it's prettier to think that he almost gave up one final time before the end, but still kept going thanks to her, and drifted off to sleep knowing that his friends were on their way and had remembered in the end, instead of him knowing everything would be all right from the start and still dying without seeing them in the morning one last time. Obviously I'm not saying that the possibility of them not remembering could have led him to regret doing what he did, but more so that realising today was the day, he might've started doubting if "dying on them" was a fair thing to "put them through" before Aigis reminded him that the old lady would've wished to be there for her cat's final moments
@@simplypablo6506 To be fair, the movies made Makoto a character of his own, like in P4 the Animation. Also adaptation changes based on narrative direction so it could be two ways to look at it. Makoto in the Movies was hell-bent on making it to the rooftop, but in the games maybe there was doubt still.
God the feels I had for this finale. With the power of friendship sealing Nyx(also god Shinji hit me in the gut) and to having a sad but beautiful end on the rooftop….just I can’t put it into words other than just “Maaaaaaan”

Persona 3 carried me through depression, back in 2009, coincidentially the year the game takes place in. I'm so happy to see how much it impacts other people, more so now than ever with this remake. The former being the God and personification of Sleep and the latter being the God and personification of Death. They are the twin sons of Nyx, the goddess and personification of night. I think it's a cool parallel between Makoto and Takaya

I cried from beating Nyx till the word 'Fin' A masterpiece and I felt the same emptiness when I finished Persona 5 Royal or Nier Automata. These games mean so much to me. Its like saying goodbye. When a game makes u feel so much, it is perfect ❤
I was already doing pretty rough when this cutscene started but by the time the credits started I was legitimately having trouble seeing I was sobbing so hard. Haven’t cried over a video game like that since RDR2. Legitimately might be the most emotional a video game has ever made me
I don't have any experience with the older versions of this game, all I'd heard was how great the story was from other Persona fans, but now after having seen the story of this game, I now see why this game is held in such high regard. This is one of the best stories I have ever come across in my life.

ive heard about the story of persona 3 and when reload released I was so ready to see if it was that goated it is now april and I still have not recovered how powerful this story was. Aigis said it best the meaning to life is what you decide to do with it with all your heart the answer dlc i feel will hit us with even more depression

Making the viewer FEEL something is what every masterpiece tries to accomplish. There are lots of fun games, and lots of fun movies, but we usually only have a handful that we can really say made us feel the kinds of highs and lows we can feel. Persona 3's story is one of those.
I was waiting. Honestly I enjoyed your playthrough the most of those I checked. Played the game near release myself, but love your reactions. They are so in line with mine, so emotional :< Now waiting for Aigis Episode as I never played The Answer before! Also reminded myself watching this how I loved Akinari's social link. Probably my favourite in the entire series. Cried like a baby :< To add to the ending - it literally killed me inside :< Makoto was doomed from the very start because of sealing Ryoji/Pharos inside of him. Anime adds a lot to it, depicting Makoto as apathetic and emotionless for most of the time, slowly building his inner self to embrace his feelings for his friends and ultimate sacrifice. Also anime shows him struggling during the last day, using the last remaining strenght to fulfill his promise to his friends. But I liked how they showed him in Reload. Smiling when he's dead, because he fulfilled his promise and saved his friends. This leaves a very bittersweet taste knowing that his friends are okay and he died "happy" to some extent. Not showing their reaction to his death builds to that feeling.
The final music, kimi no kioku, the lyrics describe perfect the end. Makoto knew the day he's gonna die and it's by sealing nyx and saving the world from the fall (hence why his ultimate persona is messiah). He just survived for 2 months because of the promise they made where they will be meeting at the rooftop on graduation day. That's the only thing that keeps him going. And when it already happened, he began to lose his breath, knowing that the promise had been granted

started playing persona for the first time like a couple weeks ago when i saw i could get in on xbox game pass. the last game like this i played was xenosaga. never thought a game could match the emotion intensity the story in this game is really good
Hope you had fun dying. As the excellent character of Scar from the lion king said be prepared. I finished this game in February and I knew what was coming the entire game and it still hurts. On a more depressing note I like to think of new game + as makoto in the seal thinking back on the best year of their life. Have fun with that whoever is dumb enough to read this comment
Just as a fan of the Persona series, if you finished Persona 4 as well, there's a sequel game that ties the cast of P3 & P4 together as a true sequel to both P3 & P4 in a 2 part fighting game called P4 Arena, and P4 Arena Ultimax 💙

This Nyx isthe only boss so far in persona I played that I want it last longer. Since its such a waste having these amazing stage and then just died to Armageddon; remembering the old FES the fight is less staged and Nyx have the boss privilaged of having 2 base turn

Update: Bought Persona 5 Royal the other day. I’m gonna try my hardest not to compare it to P3R while playing.
hahahaha, that happened to me, I started with Persona 3 Fes, and the game impacted me so much and I liked it so much that when I played Persona 4 I felt it several steps down in quality, the emotional moments didn't make me feel anything and the characters didn't I thought they were so good. but in the end persona 5 came out and I was able to enjoy it a lot, pretty close to the feeling that persona 3 left me.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it this much ❤ I played the games in order (p3, p4, p5) and while P3 remains my favorite, I enjoyed the others as well. They're definitely worth your time if you go into them knowing the vibes and overarching thematic goals (and now, graphics) are different. I hope you give them a chance!
@@alejandrovaldez4528well each Persona isn't gonna present the same things. Persona 4 has its moments but death and acceptance wasn't its theme. Naturally, Persona 3 displays the idea that although things perish and die, it's not about death but about what lies ahead and cherishing memories but knowing you can move forward to better days. It was about appreciating life and not taking those beautiful moments for granted
Persona 4 was about searching for the truth and accepting it, even the ugly sides, no matter how much it may hurt or how scary it can be, while also setting you free
@@alejandrovaldez4528 can very much relate to this. P4 felt incredibly deflated to me after playing P3P. I still enjoyed all the individual elements in P4 as I did in P3 but the story definitely felt shallow in comparison.
There's this saying that the first Persona you play most likely ends up being your favorite and I think I agree.
Having said that P3-5 are all easily in my top 20 games of all time (with P3 being number 1).
Hope u find P5R nice. Because I didn't find it nice almost at all except for Maruki Arc. (As someone who played P1 P2 P3 P4 when it first came out)
This game was just delivering so many emotions non-stop since october and all the way until the end. When the aria of the soul started playing in the final battle I cried (and the full song itself is amazing, it just kept on going). Then Burn my Dread... And then Memories of You. Makoto has to be my favourite Persona protagonist now, I didn't expect much since community really twisted my idea of his character to a basic "I don't care", so I was so fuckin surprised to find out that he is actually the most caring Persona protagonist. But the game is just so painful, yet beautiful and inspiring. I was expecting to immediately play P3P for FeMC, but now I just can not bring myself to, knowing the ending
An incredible fucking game, I am so glad it is my last main series Persona game, that was such a finale...
Thank you for appreciating Aigis. I was watching someone else incessantly complain about her role in the ending. Her journey parallels Makoto's IMO and I couldn't imagine anyone else delivering the ending monologue!
They must be a Yukari lover, they tend to be the more hostile towards Aigis because of how their role into the story matters. It’s like the Tifa/Aerith argument over and over again.
Back in the P3Portable you could have the ending with someone else rather than Aigis. Honestly I think that one is better suited and rewarding considering you could have bonded with someone else. This ending with Aigis is only really satisfying if you decided to pursue a romantic route, otherwise it feels out of place if you rejected her for someone else.
@@LCardosed92 I disagree , the only people that to say this are the ones who view this ending as a romantic when it's not, this ending is the conclusion to her arc throughout the story and her bond to the main character, which is true regardless if you pursue her SL or not and is the reason why she's has the final scene with him in the first place. But yes, the romance option in portable is neat too
It's actually just all about what it means to live for aigis. It's never romantic but players especially those who allegedly ship aigis and Makoto romanticized the final scene. It's never romantic at all

To each their own, in my honest opinion because it can be interpreted in both platonic and romantic lenses. Sometimes people just overexert their opinions which is very bad and sad. Case being people who didn't understand why Aigis had to be the one with Makoto in the rooftop, the people who heavily romanticize the ending to the point other possibilities are invisible to them (hell, even Aigis acknowledged that she "isn't the only one who could do this") and probably other things in the extreme ends of the spectrum.
Maybe the friends are THE ARCANA IS THE MEANS WHICH ALL IS REVEALED we met along the way
And maybe we don't need to save the world to find meaning in life...
You pointed out perfectly what happened between Aigis and Makoto in regards to their confidant, Makoto was still waiting in his room when the end of year ceremony had already begun... If Aigis didn't come to him he probably would've stayed there and died alone
I highly doubt that. The only reason he hung on so long was to complete his promise with his friends so if anything he would have died alone on the rooftop.
@@xxsay_bye_byexx1824 It's basically up to interpretation, the way I see it. Yes, maybe he still planned to go to the roof anyway, but that leaves the question of why he was still in his room at that time, instead of going to school with them and skipping the ceremony, like in the movie.
I think he could've easily realised that he wasn't gonna hold on for much longer, and didn't think honoring the promise was worth making them more worried than they already were the day before... Day he spent basically saying goodbye to everyone, after a whole month of seemingly being the only one to remember anything. Instead of risking randomly dying on the way to the school, or for them to learn about it after random people on the street or school find his body, and that Aigis gave him the final push to still go for it anyway.
I think it's prettier to think that he almost gave up one final time before the end, but still kept going thanks to her, and drifted off to sleep knowing that his friends were on their way and had remembered in the end, instead of him knowing everything would be all right from the start and still dying without seeing them in the morning one last time.
Obviously I'm not saying that the possibility of them not remembering could have led him to regret doing what he did, but more so that realising today was the day, he might've started doubting if "dying on them" was a fair thing to "put them through" before Aigis reminded him that the old lady would've wished to be there for her cat's final moments

@@simplypablo6506 To be fair, the movies made Makoto a character of his own, like in P4 the Animation. Also adaptation changes based on narrative direction so it could be two ways to look at it. Makoto in the Movies was hell-bent on making it to the rooftop, but in the games maybe there was doubt still.

Hi Alana, I've been watching every video of your gameplay on what happens to be my favorite game of all time. Persona 3 carried me through depression, back in 2009, coincidentially the year the game takes place in.
I'm so happy to see how much it impacts other people, more so now than ever with this remake.

The former being the God and personification of Sleep and the latter being the God and personification of Death. They are the twin sons of Nyx, the goddess and personification of night. I think it's a cool parallel between Makoto and Takaya

I was already doing pretty rough when this cutscene started but by the time the credits started I was legitimately having trouble seeing I was sobbing so hard. Haven’t cried over a video game like that since RDR2. Legitimately might be the most emotional a video game has ever made me

I don't have any experience with the older versions of this game, all I'd heard was how great the story was from other Persona fans, but now after having seen the story of this game, I now see why this game is held in such high regard. This is one of the best stories I have ever come across in my life.

Making the viewer FEEL something is what every masterpiece tries to accomplish. There are lots of fun games, and lots of fun movies, but we usually only have a handful that we can really say made us feel the kinds of highs and lows we can feel. Persona 3's story is one of those.

To add to the ending - it literally killed me inside :< Makoto was doomed from the very start because of sealing Ryoji/Pharos inside of him. Anime adds a lot to it, depicting Makoto as apathetic and emotionless for most of the time, slowly building his inner self to embrace his feelings for his friends and ultimate sacrifice. Also anime shows him struggling during the last day, using the last remaining strenght to fulfill his promise to his friends.
But I liked how they showed him in Reload. Smiling when he's dead, because he fulfilled his promise and saved his friends. This leaves a very bittersweet taste knowing that his friends are okay and he died "happy" to some extent. Not showing their reaction to his death builds to that feeling.

Makoto knew the day he's gonna die and it's by sealing nyx and saving the world from the fall (hence why his ultimate persona is messiah). He just survived for 2 months because of the promise they made where they will be meeting at the rooftop on graduation day. That's the only thing that keeps him going. And when it already happened, he began to lose his breath, knowing that the promise had been granted

Hope you had fun dying. As the excellent character of Scar from the lion king said be prepared. I finished this game in February and I knew what was coming the entire game and it still hurts. On a more depressing note I like to think of new game + as makoto in the seal thinking back on the best year of their life. Have fun with that whoever is dumb enough to read this comment

This Nyx isthe only boss so far in persona I played that I want it last longer. Since its such a waste having these amazing stage and then just died to Armageddon; remembering the old FES the fight is less staged and Nyx have the boss privilaged of having 2 base turn
