I feel like people are misusing the word "original." Baby Driver is not an original movie because of it's premise, but because of the way it is executed. In terms of execution, Baby Driver is an original film.
Critical Movie Fan The same with all his movies, Shaun it's a zombie movie, Hot Fuzz a buddy cop, Scott Pilgrim a rom com and World's End a alien invasion. We've see them before but they are (like you said) executed differently and that's why they work They aren't original, they are refreshing
There are only... what was it, like 36 Dramatic Situations? 36 stories that the human experience can capture, so a *truly original* story is pretty much impossible. People can merely find new and unique ways of telling the same stories. Western and Sci-Fi= Firefly. Samurai and Gangster = John Wick. Political/Ethical drama and Sci-Fi = District 9. Western and Horror= Bone Tomahawk.
Actually, you are misunderstanding the word 'original' in this context. They don't mean clever and interesting, they just mean that it isn't part of a franchise or an adaptation or a reboot, ie it is a first time story.
Yes. Kristian Harloff said that Baby Driver is what he think people thought "Drive" was GOING to be. The basic premise of a getaway driver who falls for a waitress and wants out the crime life is in both films but its how they are both executed in very different ways in both style and tone that make each their own unique experience.
Exactly. There really aren't stories that haven't been told before, hell, I can find you multiple stories of a kid who was great at his craft and was involved with crime, but the point is, how are you going to present it, and how are you going to blend it and twist it in a way that hasn't been told before.
I think that 'original' is a concept in peoples head that sets most movies up for disappointment. It actually means 'good' and 'not part of a franchise'. ''Original' to me does not always equal success and usually the best things are riffs on ideas that already exist, so that the audience has something to compare it to. Like he said in the video, the director defines that genre, not the other way around. The appeal of 'original' work is hearing the unique voice of the director telling a story, not that it is 'original' in that no one had done it before. An issue is that people are more likely to go watch a film they know something about before going and seeing something 'original' so that is why a lot of film directors, especially successful indie ones, use genre as a way to bridging the gap between 'franchise' and 'original' works. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
6:22 "[Hot Fuzz] shows the balance that results in success by giving up something, and something that I believe is reflected in Wright's career." - Yep. Marvel are eating their hearts out rn.
yes! was just about to comment on that. when he was mentioning aliens it seemed like they didn't know where he was going and when he said "alienated back home" they completely got it
A pretty interesting thought. So far I've only seen Hot Fuzz but it had to be one of the most interesting movies I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying.
Shaun of the Dead is fairly decent but I wouldn't say it's as good as Hot Fuzz; in a lot of ways, Shaun of the Dead is way darker and sadder than you might expect; for all the laughs I got watching it the first time, on repeated viewings it's astounding how absolutely straight the movie plays things; it's more like a drama with characters who happen to be funny. Scott Pilgrim is very well directed but the story isn't as good as the comic's story.
Just saw Baby Driver half an hour ago..If I had to rank his films it would be.. 1. Shaun of the Dead 2. Baby Driver 3. Scott Pilgrim 4. Hot Fuzz 5. The World's End
VB MUTT I've gotta say that I truly believe that The World's End is Edgar Wrights masterpiece. I think all of his films are excellent so I can't even rank them.
Baby driver is my least favorite of edgars films but is by no means bad- in fact it's better than a lot of films in the cinema at the moment, that's why you have to respect him so much as a director and writer.
Nigga, this video shows how Wright has an issue with coming up with a good sequel. He even cited the Matrix sequels as examples of where do you take your character one they have reached their potential.
Double A Animations Yes when Peter Jackson stops being lazy it will happen. Originally, the second Tintin film was going to be based on Hergé's The Seven Crystal Ballsand Prisoners of the Sun.[124] However, screenwriter Anthony Horowitz later stated that those books would be the second sequel and another story would become the first sequel.[125] Peter Jackson announced that he would direct the sequel once he had finished The Hobbit trilogy.[124] Two years before The Secret of the Unicorn, Jackson mentioned that his favorite Tintin stories were The Seven Crystal Balls, Prisoners of the Sun, The Black Island, and The Calculus Affair, but he had not yet decided which stories would form the basis of the second film. He added "it would be great" to use Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon for a third or fourth film in the series.[126] By the time The Secret of the Unicorn was released, Spielberg said the book that would form the sequel had been chosen and that the Thomson and Thompson detectives would "have a much bigger role".[127] The sequel would be produced by Spielberg and directed by Jackson.[127] Kathleen Kennedy said the script might be completed by February or March 2012 and motion-captured in summer 2012, so that the film would be on track to be released by Christmas 2014 or mid-2015.[128] In the months following the release of The Secret of the Unicorn, Spielberg revealed that a story outline for the sequel had been completed and that it was based on two books.[129] Horowitz tweeted that Professor Calculus would be introduced in the sequel.[130][131] During a press tour in Belgium for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Jackson said he intended to shoot performance-capture in 2013, aiming for a release date in 2015.[132] In March 2013, Spielberg said, "Don't hold me to it, but we're hoping the film will come out around Christmas-time in 2015. We know which books we're making, we can't share that now but we're combining two books which were always intended to be combined by Hergé." He refused to confirm the names of the books, but said The Blue Lotus would probably be the third Tintin film.[133] In December 2014, when asked if the Tintinsequel would be his next project after The Hobbit trilogy, Jackson said that it would be made "at some point soon." However, he added that he wanted to direct two New Zealand films before that.[134] In June 2015, Jamie Bell stated that the sequel was titled Tintin and the Temple of the Sun and that he hoped shooting would begin in early 2016 for a possible release by the end of 2017 or early 2018.[135] In November 2015, Horowitz stated that he was no longer working on the sequel, and did not know if it was still being made,[136] and in March 2016, he confirmed that the script he had written for the sequel was scrapped.[137] On 19 November 2015, Polygon announced that the sequel was titled The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun and that it would be released in December 2016.[138] On 18 March 2016, Scout.co.nz announced that Jackson would produce the sequel rather than direct, and that it would be released on 16 December. They also announced that a third Tintin film was in development, with Jackson serving as executive producer. Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis were reported to be reprising their roles in both the films,[139] but Serkis stated later in the month that he did not know when the sequel was going to enter production, despite claiming that Jackson was still interested in making it.[140] Spielberg later announced that Jackson was still attached to directing the sequel, and that it would enter work once Jackson completed another Amblin Partners/DreamWorks production
Same with Nolan, actually. He uses genre in an interesting way, to tell the audience what they have to expect, but then does something different. And since they know each other, I feel like they've talked about this a lot.
Also you can tell he doesn't have to be "original" to make good movies by looking at his casting. Three of his best (and few) films have the exact same two star actors: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. However, using their amazing acting skills to his advantage he shapes them each into three unique characters. Plus, Baby Driver's nowhere near original, it just did it by far the best.
My favorite director list 5:Edgar Wright 4: george romero 3: Quinton Tarantino 2: kevin smith 1: Martin Scorsese This has nothing to do with the video i just like listing my favorite directors
Problem is, World's End would make a great franchise, it sets up a narrative that could continue. It has its own lore and has its own rules. His other films can be self contained, but not World's End.
I totally agree with you about Hot Fuzz being his masterpiece. After I watched it for the first time, I went out and bought the box set with all the special features on DVD.
My family and I recently watched all three of the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright trilogy is that they are so funny, heartfelt, and the action is amazing. Its so engaging and fun.
Great video. My one suggestion is cutting down those interview clips. I think grab what's most important from them and build off it. I felt like I was waiting on clips to end a lot. Other than that, great potential!
My opinion is, that baby driver was the biggest work of art of them all. He allways was clever with implementing music but in babydriver expecialy. Half of the movie is the soundtrack. Also the song lines match the situation perfectly. Its a musical with action, with cars, with love and drama, and without cringe or that unrealistic feel. Every step and move is like a dance. And the movie was above standart in allmost all other areas. Costume, cast, action, cars, and the freaking story. Its my absolute favorite, and im surprised it wasnt nominated for even 1 Oscar

This is slightly off topic but I was just about to comment about how he didn't make Scott pilgrim but the movie actually came out before the final comic so it's likely that he did have somewhat of a say in it
My ranking: 1) Shaun Of The Dead (10/10) 2) Scott Pilgrim (10/10) 3) Baby Driver (9/10) 4) The Worlds End (9/10) 5) Hot Fuzz (8/10) That's just my personal list. While some may not agree with my Hot Fuzz rating, I still think the film is great. But I rather watch the other 4 films again before I watch Hot Fuzz again.
"Directors shouldn't be defined by a genre, the genre should be defined by them." What a quote!
wu jimmy
It's alright...nothing original in it though...we need more original quotes.
Get a man that looks at you the way Simon pegg looks at Edgar wright
My heart melted
Simon be 'mirin'
Yeah! I noted too.
Lovely
he has described Edgar Wright as his girlfriend when talking about Shaun of the dead
David Walliams actually spoke about it in an interview once. Apparently he was friends with both and sort of introduced them to each other but now they look at each other like that 😂 I think it may have been in a Spaced interview years ago.

Well, I've got to say among comedy directors Edgar is the only Wright one.
smooth...
I guess you could call him Mister Wright.
Mr Montage and Wes Anderson as well.
I wish there are more filmmakers influenced by Mel Brooks, Monty Python and the Zuckers.
I'm ashamed to say... i'm impressed :p
03:29 "You feel alienated, pun intended..."
Simon and Nick both think. For a sec. Then both smile at each other 😂

Wow good answer man! That's pretty much it.
Smart, smart, smart! Wish we could of seen his Ant-Man.
*could have
Purveyor of Awesome damn straight
Joss Wheadon said it was the best Marvel script we could've got nor of the best comicbook films of all time.
Damn he had a AntMan ? Sheeesh makes me not even want to watch the original
@@johnnycage435 ant man is still good, just not as good as wright's would've been
I can only imagine how much more amazing Ant-man would have been if Edgar Wright directed it.

I like his style, but I feel like it would've been better post-MCU.
3:24 look at how fascinated simon and nick are by just listening to ed speak :D
yes! was just about to comment on that. when he was mentioning aliens it seemed like they didn't know where he was going and when he said "alienated back home" they completely got it
Lol yea they are head over heels
Simon looks at Wright and looks back at Nick like he's saying "See, what did I tell you? He's a fucking genius!"
They're connecting over the pun of "alienated"
A pretty interesting thought. So far I've only seen Hot Fuzz but it had to be one of the most interesting movies I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying.
Karma's Champion a movie you definetely need to watch is Shaun of the Dead it's so hilarious

Karma's Champion watch shaun of the dead you wont regret.
Watch baby driver. Matter of fact, watch all of them what are you doing?
I loved the way the characters played out in baby driver especially the direction Kevin Spacey's character took.
I just saw Baby Driver...it's a masterpiece!
I'm the awkward fuck who likes the Worlds End the most
I'm not alone? Saints be praised, I'm not alone!
gental robots I like the concept and acting just not the simplified plot with no real resignation
Charley Archer WOOHOO!
Hey, guys! There's a succession of pubs over here...

That little smile Simon and Nick give each other when Edgar makes the "alienated" pun is just amazing.
I wish he would direct the Tintin sequel he did such a good job writing the story for the first one

Nzone 1 Source material Tintin has plenty of it

Been waiting for you to make some baby driver content since I saw it. thanks
Problem is, World's End would make a great franchise, it sets up a narrative that could continue. It has its own lore and has its own rules. His other films can be self contained, but not World's End.
My Favorite Director working right now, so bummed he didn't Direct Antman.
His films are for THE GREATER GOOD
I totally agree with you about Hot Fuzz being his masterpiece. After I watched it for the first time, I went out and bought the box set with all the special features on DVD.
Is that "Ain't No Sunshine" in the background? Has to be!!
Enthios nice catch
I LOVE EDGAR WRIGHT! only director i feel that can make any story feel fresh
Edgar Wright is amazing.
Never heard someone say original that many times in a sentence before.
Man I covered so much of this on channel "Geek In Thought". I love Scott Pilgrim, not only my fav Edgar Wright film but it's my fav comic book film
My family and I recently watched all three of the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright trilogy is that they are so funny, heartfelt, and the action is amazing. Its so engaging and fun.
It's been too long since I watched World's End. Honestly, it's one of my favorites by Wright. Second only to Hot Fuzz.
Scott Pilgrim is my favorite film by Edgar Wright! Actually one of my favorite films of all time.
YES! I want all the franchises we have today, but I also want just as many original stories to go along with it!
"Directors shouldn't be defined by a genre. The genre should be defined by them..." Love it
Great video. My one suggestion is cutting down those interview clips. I think grab what's most important from them and build off it. I felt like I was waiting on clips to end a lot. Other than that, great potential!
my ranking Of Edgar Wrights movies
1 Baby Driver
2 Shaun of the Dead
3 Scott Pilgrim vs The World
4 Hot Fuzz
5 The World's End
I just saw Baby Driver and I was literally lit.
I think this is one of your best videos. Good job man!
Its my absolute favorite, and im surprised it wasnt nominated for even 1 Oscar
haha I love that expression that Pegg gives to Frost when Wright says "Alienated...pun intended". :D
I feel the guy at the beginning that just repeated "Original" just regurgitated what he heard from some RUclips personality. (Excluding you)
I did not know the "let me explain" guy had another channel
0:00 I love this man
....and he's writing a sequel to baby driver... and since 22 Jump Street's self aware style sequel has already been done I'll be curious to see how he keeps it fresh. If anyone can make a sequel fresh, it's him.
"The genre should be defined by them."
Damn straight.
Hot Fuzz is my fav, too. In part because I grew up watching it, but also because Edgar (and the actors) managed to balance small-town British humor with pop culture references, fast paced car chases and swans.
3:35 simons reaction to that 😂😂😂
I screenshotted the moment when nick frost and simin pegg were staring at edgar in awe. Now that takes some doing!
Great use of Bill Withers song for the background
To be honest I think this is why the original trilogy of star wars is actually original, it tells the story of luke who goes from just learning about the force to ending it by becoming a jedi and seeing his father one last time, through out the trilogy him and the characters around him grow as people which in modern movies is cut down to around 2 hours. I think that star wars as a whole is probably one of the most original things out there even if episode 1 2 and 3 weren't the most amazing they still told a story which showed characters grow and relationships grow and it ultimately ended in a bad way due to anakins anger and naivety.
Edgar Wright looks like Jack White
Imagine if we got to see his Antman!
That would have been great!
I love how they kinda smirk at 3:29.
wright makes does great at poking fun in a genre of movies while also making a great movie in those genres at the same time and that is not easy to do.
Just watched World's End 2 hours ago and was wondering,"what if Edgar Wright had used The Winchester" as one of the pubs?"
I love the original concepts he can do, he just makes everything entertaining. He can put stupid fun into anything (hot fuzz, church fair) and the soundtrack of baby driver. Cornetto trilogy, plus bd are some of my favourite films.
BUt nOTHIgN LikE tE EMoJi MUvi
Ansel's face at 0:25 sums up the first part perfectly...
He really hit the buddy cop genre at the height of its popularity. Three decades after the 80s.
Hot Fuzz was, as I recall, the very first Edgar Wright movie I've ever watched; I also recall Scott Pilgrim as being the second.
Beautifully said
most Oscar movies I find feel a bit too pretentious
completely agree about the hot fuzz thing
I have to commend you for your 'things going wrong in cinemas' super-cut. 1:24
both Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim are 2 of my all time favourites
We need more original films!
michael moore We have them just no one chooses to see them
michael moore great job. You missed the entire point.
Good video, and I definitely agree that Hot Fuzz is his masterpiece. Perfect movie.
This was a very good watch 🙌🏾
i so super love this vid and all you say in this and Wright is the man =D
Baby Driver might be his best film.

Anyone any idea why they never show Edgar Wright films in Hong Kong/China? Every time he releases a film I want to go watch it but it's never shown.
I was just so distracted when you kept saying john-ra. :p
My top 5:
1) Hot Fuzz
2) Baby Driver
3) The World's End
4) Shaun of the Dead
5) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
if there is one thing I miss, is that shaun of the dead cancelled sequel which would have the amazing title of "Shaun Of The Dead: Dead By Shaun"
Will u please do a video bought the ideas and themes of Netflix film "Okja"
just realized edgar predicted the get out screenplay oscar win
This is slightly off topic but I was just about to comment about how he didn't make Scott pilgrim but the movie actually came out before the final comic so it's likely that he did have somewhat of a say in it
any know the name of movie playing in backround at 1:43?
Well said.
What a great video
Saying what is Edgar Wrights best film is like saying what the best Pixar movie is. There are so many good choices you just can't choose
1:40 what is names this movies? Why you didn't wrote moves name in your video?
5. Shaun of the Dead
4. The World's End
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
2. Hot Fuzz
1. Baby Driver
there ain't no sunshine when she's gone

4. Hott Fuzz
5. The Worlds End
cual es el video ese bueno de Edward Write del youtuber que dice cosas de cine
My ranking:
1) Shaun Of The Dead (10/10)
2) Scott Pilgrim (10/10)
3) Baby Driver (9/10)
4) The Worlds End (9/10)
5) Hot Fuzz (8/10)
That's just my personal list. While some may not agree with my Hot Fuzz rating, I still think the film is great. But I rather watch the other 4 films again before I watch Hot Fuzz again.
Edgar Wright should direct a DCEU movie
I'd love to see The Worlds End sequel. It can be pulled off well, knowing how much Gary King is still a fuck-up at the end of the movie.
0:00 is that Donnie off of The Wolf of Wall Street? 😂😂😂
I'll betcha you'll break 100K by the end of the year. Any thoughts as to some kind of celebration?
