Let's not forget the FUNNIEST scene where Knives comes over looking for Scott and he jumps through the window and then his arm reaches in for his coat.. And Wallace only partially covers this up as it's happening. Who thinks of this shit
Knives is the most lovable ex ever in any film. Pretty in Pink gave us Ducky, who was friendzoned at the prom. The movie then revealed the highly probable situation in which a gorgeous blond saw Ducky and invited him over, so the audience is supposed to feel good for him. Lame. The Knives character encourages Scott to follow his dream, and announces with confidence that she's ok. So that character got to show us infatuation, jealousy, resignation, and finally selfless agape. This movie rules. All the actors nailed their parts.
I can't believe this failed at the box office. This movie is like a work of art that's not appreciated in it's time. Hate to see so much great thought, effort, and work not be appreciated.
I actually did not believe your comment until i just checked it out right now like W T F this film truly excels in film production, members of cast, everything and beautifully synced together with all the video games and such, my gosh, people dont know what cinema really is ffs. Not fair on Wright!
It failed because nerd/geek culture didn't blow up yet until the first avengers movie by disney. If this was made today it would've garnered fans of how literally it feels like a comic book. With all the visuals and editing.
besides it’s inability to cover some of the most atmospheric scenes in the graphic novels because of it’s format-but hey cinematography and actor choice was pretty wild !
oh ya, the movie is like.......over stuffed with background details. like you can see the twins in the background of the music store as cardboard cut outs. they literally recreated the shut down night club the rockit
One of the best movies ever made. Sure it has flaws in the last act, since it's a bit rushed but I can watch this movie every day and still love it and always notice something I haven't before. Edgar Wright is truly one of the best directors to have ever lived
Have you read the comics? I read them before watching the movie, and as a huge Scott Pilgrim fan, and an aspiring film maker, I found the movie absolutely atrocious. The only good parts where ones that came from the comics themselves. Do yourself a favor and read them, they contain just as much (more) fun as the movie, and they have the breathing room and the much more suitable art style to do it justice.
Angus Helldin Yeah I've read the comics and I agree, a lot more breathing room. But I like both the same amount. Just the fact that Im more a fan of movies and I consider that movie a masterpiece in the visual aspect. Just like any Edgar's movie
I'd say it's less that it's an atrocious film, and more that it's just a bad adaptation. And even that isn't ENTIRELY true (seeing as how it depends on if you believe an adaptation should be loyal or stand on its own, etc.). The comic is great, and while the movie isn't as good, it isn't nearly bad enough to say it's "atrocious".
I feel like a lot of Scott Pilgrim's transitions are rooted in trying to be faithful to the comic book. I know that it takes a lot of talent to bring something like Scott Pilgrim to film. However, I feel like not comparing and contrasting the comic and film transitions is an oversight to the topic. Also, with as much as Edgar Wright is talked up in this video, I wanted to see a some other examples of his work.
Go check out the Every Frame a Painting video that Nerdwriter mentions. EFaP was created by a couple of film editors, so they come at it from a different slant, but their appreciation of Wright is similar. ruclips.net/video/3FOzD4Sfgag/видео.html I just rewatch Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim not too long ago. I really can't understand why Wright's films aren't more commercially successful.
All of Edgar Wright's films are masterpieces. I thought about ranking them and I did, but it took me 2 weeks because of how godamn good his films are 5: Hot Fuzz 4 The World's End 3: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World 2: Baby Driver 1: Shaun of the Dead
The scene at 4:17 was very cleverly done! The part of the house that you see Scott is walking through is simply a set, the walls of which are on wheels (include the staircase). The second Scott closes the door and beings to pee, backstage workers move the walls away and wheel in new ones that make up the school setting. Then, when he opens the door again, the set is completely different. There is footage of them doing this on the Behind the Scenes Documentary on the Scott Pilgrim vs the World DVD.
I'm actually glad it didn't do that well, because now it's one of a kind. If it had been successful, there might have been a lot of lesser imitations of it that would make it feel less special. I agree it deserved to make a lot more money, but maybe it's sort of a blessing that it didn't.
I went to the movies and bought it on bluray 3 times because of 3 different covers I seen. I did my part lol wish the game could get licensed again by ubisoft

that set transition was covered in the extras. its literally the same set (for the one continuous shot ) they just flipped up some panels and carpet for the "hall way" to lead you to believe they transitioned into a new set or did a green screen effect. funny thing is, they make the decision to do said single shot sound like a "lol why not" type decision
"I don't know" is a passive-aggressive way to disagree with someone, pretending that someone asked you a question and ignorance of the topic is somehow a valid opinion, but I don't know. Sit up straight.
I agree. He is also super under-rated and never seems to get mentioned in lists of great directors. Is it because he doesn't write his own stuff as well? Sad really.
Another thing about Scott Pilgrim is that many people who love it point to it as an example of how comic book movies should be because the quick transitions and the distortion of space within the story is very much like that within a comic book. Scott Pilgrim was a movie which knew that it was based on a comic book and played with that idea. Now, I don't know if that sort of approach would work for the more serious movies based on comic books like Batman, but it does perhaps point to a way to help some movies which haven't been too successful. Perhaps one of the many problems that can hinder a comic book-based movie is that they are so often trying to fit the story and the style of the book itself into the arrangement and rigidity of a "typical" movie. I know some may take issue with this and I'm full willing to admit that I may be wrong, but it does seem like at least some of the Marvel movies have taken that advice and arranged the movie more like a comic book rather than trying to squeeze and press the comic book into the frame of a traditional movie.
Rex Thurstan I love how disorienting most of the transitions are in the scenes where he's losing his memory. It's a nice touch. The movie overall is pretty perfect.
The most impactful line and biggest insight of this whole video happens at 4:59 "Scott Pilgrim is a story about a transitionary period in the Hero's life. A period between knowing who you were and deciding who you are going to be" THIS IS SUCH A GOOD LINE. I find that this period is so difficult in people's lives when they have no direction on who they want to be. It's so hard for my friend's that jump out of college with nothing, not do anything and ultimately push themselves to suffer with the rest of the outcasts of society. Trying to push through this and not staying still when it happens is extremely important. In my own life, I have doubted if I was going down the right path multiple times, often ending up in depression. But making sure that I know that have something that I can do and push myself to be better at has helped me through those times. I guess that's one way of taking that, but I think people need to stop losing confidence in themselves when they have one little thing happen to them. It disheartens the people around them. If you know someone in that kind of rut, please be a good friend for them. Let them cry on your shoulder if you have to. It's not something that is going to destroy your masculinity, or hurt your social standing. If anything it creates a stronger bond with that person and hopefully you'll be able to rely on them in that sort of situation.
This is so perfect. Look: the BRRRRR even runs along the denser areas of the tree branches! I just wish the movie was more like the comic: I understand the length limits, but the whole point of it was lost by the end. I mean, just look at the Shadow Scott differences as an example. In the comic, he faces who he truly is and his mistakes that he'd tried to gloss over by dissociation. In the movie, it's a joke.
As much as I like Ant-Man, Edgar Wright's version of Ant-Man would've been AMAZING. It probably would've gone from what I think is an 8/10, to a 10/10.
But it probably wouldn't have fit the tone of the MCU. Though I agree, an Edgar Wright Ant-Man would've been amazing...also I would love to see Edgar Wrights take on a Deadpool movie.
Ant Man is a shitty 4/10. It's such a fucking shitty movie, banking on recycled likability-techniques. Doesn't even ground Edgar Wrights prints given to them.
One of your most beautifully written and choreographed videos yet. I genuinely felt moved by the end of this one - your Picasso video comes to mind as another powerful example. Keep up the amazing work.
I'm about to write my first short film with a friend, that last line is something I'll have to commit to when designing the film. Thanks for sharing your insights, I'm lucky that they crossed my path!
io 90 Sorry I'm not really understanding you. Did you mean to say "I'm going to take my opinion and use it justify my problems with other people's opinions"?
+io 90 Stop being pretentious. Edgar Wright's movies are masterclasses in directing. But if you didn't know that already, perhaps you should, watch more movies?
You should do a video on Swiss Army Man! There's a lot of questions I and probably most of the people who've seen it have about it and I think you'd do a great job dissecting it.
Featured the most sophisticated and intellectual fart jokes I've ever seen. And that is not a statement I thought I would ever make. Gotta love movies like that
io 90 I understand where you're coming from, but I think Swiss Army Man was beautifully paced and incredible. If you consider it to be in the same world as Interesting Ball, it really makes it seem more complete to me. Hank builds this life with Many, and in the end when it's revealed that maybe he isn't crazy, I think to Interesting Ball. It makes for a bigger reveal when you realize "these things that seem impossible aren't just probable, but inevitable."
I love the transitions where Wallace is all of a sudden in the scene and then Scott is all of a sudden in a new place because to me it reminds me of when you get somewhere but you can't remember going there (either driving or walking on autopilot), showing how Scott is so inside his own head he is missing parts of his waking life
Yeah, Edgar Wright wrote a letter to Nintendo asking permission to use songs from The Legend of Zelda in his film, calling the Zelda theme "the nursery rhyme of this generation".
Saying that the reason there are so many transitions in the film is because the film is about "a transition in Scott Pilgrim's life"... is sweet, and it sounds great to wrap up your video... but I'm positive that's not the case AT ALL. Wright most probably wanted to galvanize the adaptation adding some cinematic quality to the source material (the comic book itself). And... that's it.
These things remind me of the Death Note manga.. when the creators were asked about a lot of the symbolism in it, they simply brushed off all of the community's deep discussion on their implications by simply saying stuff like "I just thought it was really cool". Genius not always comes from the mind, but by the mere chance that a person creates when allowed to present his product to an audience that has all the resources to appreciate it in levels it didn't have on its own.
Exactly -- I'm surprised Nerdwriter didn't get that -- does he really think that Wright would've inserted all those onomatopoeias if the source material hadn't been a comic book? No, Wright utilized those specific transitions, because he was trying to cinematographically capture the nature of a comic book -- much like the way Ang Lee did w/ the "Hulk" movie...
While I'd say that is extremely true for most of the film, I do actually think the part where he says the transitions make you feel what Scott is feeling, that is, "drifting through life", might still be very intentional. For instance, in the beginning the transitions in particular felt so seamless and often, it's actually a little hard to keep up at points. Like the audience is being teleported from one place to another. Especially that part where Scott is hanging out with Knives or when he went from playing the guitar, to walking down the street. In both scenes, he was very out of it and hardly interacting with anyone. As a result, in both scenes each transition seem to always be within seconds of each other. I think that at the very least was intentional since it gives us a sense of not knowing exactly what's going on, as if we weren't paying enough attention like Scott was. Especially since the only continuous thing in both of these scenes, was how Scott interacted with the world. Making it feel like we are watching the world move around him, rather than the world movie WITH him.
I really enjoyed this movie and the books. Watching it again this year as someone who appreciates films more I really noticed the transitions this time around and was like wooow.
I really like this video, and I think It also explains why I like the channel rhystic studies so much, the transitions are so integral to video essays and they’re so well done
This video reminded me of a scene in Game of Thrones 2x03 where someone has a conversation with three different people, yet it's so cleverly edited and the transitions are so well-utilized that instead of being three different scenes for three different conversations, it's just one seamless, masterclass of a scene.
Rob Thomas's "iZombie" likes to do the same thing during sequences where the police are interrogating several people. They'll cut the interviews up into bits and then arrange them so it seems like the various witnesses\suspects are having an argument or discussion with each other, while the detectives have minimal input. It's an interesting way of handling such stock (but necessary) scenes.
When my English class was watching this movie and I missed the first day: Me: What's the film about? Friend: Um it's hard to explain... but basically it's like it's on drugs Me: What? _movie is on drugs_
Edgar Wright always amazes me with visual style and how he truly understands the subject matter he takes on. Would love to see a David Fincher one the man is crazy with lighting and subtle CG
You were spot on with this. Thank you for elaborating on a seemingly trivial part of the film, that i wouldnt have appreciated as much had i not seen this video. Having watched this, i realize now that the transitions were one of the reasons I was so drawn and impressed by the film. Thanks for your awesome work and insight!
I saw this in my subbox and decided to watch the movie first, and like wtf why haven't I seen this movie before??? It's fantastic! Thank you for making me watch this.
Just found you thanks to Cinema Wins, and I'm glad I did. The way you talk about movies in this fashion is wonderfully done. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you talk about Scott Pilgrim. Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite movies and to hear it explained so smooth and wonderful is such a great thing. I applaud you for your well done Video Essay on this and hope to watch more of your content.
I love how you use a song that samples the soundtrack from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind when talking about how Scott has been drifting through life. You are brilliant.
Great video, and a really nice break down. Why didn't you mention the fact that transitions are also so important because its a comic book, that's such an important element to how the film would be made - based on the comic's panels and doing what they're able to do that way. It's so important to how the thing came together the way it did I would think
One thing which struck me with Antman is Wright's dialogue and monologue was there but the cinematography wasn't. Luis friend of a friend stories never had the right cuts in them.
I wish more films could have the flow of Scott Pilgrim man, the transitions make me feel so connected every time and I'm glad you put it into words even if I'm years late on the video
The scene transition of the bathroom it's very interesting, there is a behind the scenes that shows how they made it, they just changed the set in real time, they moved the floor and the lockers, the walls had wheels so they can move it fast... Awesome video btw!!!
I personally love the blurring of the distinction between the 'fakeness' of a movie and reality. I love phantasmagoria and the Kingdom Hearts openings are some of my all time favourite videos. I also love the idea of making a movie with as few 'virtual' elements as possible, even the intro/credits being physically present in the scene (not exactly relevant to Scott Pilgrim but also good). I liked how in the Fringe tv series the names of locations are in the form of 3D text floating in midair in the scene at a specific place in space and it remaining ever present throughout the series, that bit is just awesome to me and I'd like more of that in cinematography (to do it myself actually, but that'll likely never happen).
Oh trust me, that is not dissappointing. If you're like me and stalk RUclips channel statistics, you'll find that his channel jumped from about 71,000 to 786,000 subscribers... in a little over a year. From September of last year till now.
Fantastic breakdown. One of my favorite movies for the transitions. Would love to see your take on Archer. It isn't to Edgar Wright's level in terms of transitions - being an animated show - but the writers pay very specific attention to dialog transition and merging one conversation with the next. An example of this would be say Archer and Lana are talking and Archer says "Would you please hand me the gun"; the next line and scene would have Mallory Archer saying to Pam "No means no Pam, you cannot do another HR review"(both examples are made up)
These videos really have taught me how to appreciate cinema more, how to recognize some techniques and quality film making. I find myself enjoying some of my old favourites over again looking through entirely different lens. I wanted to work on film when i was young but the opportunity never presented itself to me. I'm glad to learn more about it if not as a creator then as a watcher. Thank you.

8/10 is far too generous.
Ant Man is a shitty 4/10. It's such a fucking shitty movie, banking on recycled likability-techniques. Doesn't even ground Edgar Wrights prints given to them.
"tone of the MCU" oh you mean that universe where Luke Cage and Thor coexist?
Why is this channel so good - these videos are of the highest quality.
My favorite movie!
Didnt expect you here :D
Its also my favorite
NerdSync I should rewatch it, also the comics are so amazing.
NerdSync likewise Scott
NerdSync hot fuzz is much much better
"Scott Pilgrim transitions"
Me: Good for her.
my favorite movie - i can watch it again, and again, and again, and I'm never bored of it!
One of your most beautifully written and choreographed videos yet. I genuinely felt moved by the end of this one - your Picasso video comes to mind as another powerful example. Keep up the amazing work.
One of my favorite movies. Edgar Wright is hands down my favorite director with Shaun of the Dead being his best work, at least to me.
Hot Fuzz needs some lovin' too
Hot Fuzz is by far his best work.
io 90 IKR
Gonna be a total heretic over here and just say it:
The Worlds End is my favourite.
Hot Fuzz for me. But all of his movies are great.
I'm about to write my first short film with a friend, that last line is something I'll have to commit to when designing the film. Thanks for sharing your insights, I'm lucky that they crossed my path!
Also, Scott Pilgrim is the ultimate reason I ever wanted to make films.
then you should not be making films
Hmm, do what you love or listen to some dickless hill-grazer in the RUclips comments. Do what you love man!
dontlookatluke huh. It's a small site after all
"...that last line is something I'll have to commit to when designing the film."
"I'm in Venice, this is crazaaaaay!"
that's insane! i never realised that much work went into transitions but it does help explain why thats such a good movie.
One of your best essays yet! Certainly persuasive and engaging
Edgar Wright is overall my favorite director. Never been disappointed by his direction.
Watch more movies.
io 90 Sorry I'm not really understanding you. Did you mean to say "I'm going to take my opinion and use it justify my problems with other people's opinions"?
Really disappointed me that we never got to see what his version of Ant-Man was gonna be like.
+io 90 Stop being pretentious.
Edgar Wright's movies are masterclasses in directing.
But if you didn't know that already, perhaps you should, watch more movies?
You'll have your share of accolades in time, I'm very sure.

You should do a video on Swiss Army Man! There's a lot of questions I and probably most of the people who've seen it have about it and I think you'd do a great job dissecting it.
It's a good short film, stretched out way too far.
Yeah, I totally agree, like the directors short film "Interesting Ball" their style seems to work better in shorts.
Featured the most sophisticated and intellectual fart jokes I've ever seen. And that is not a statement I thought I would ever make. Gotta love movies like that
But yeah great idea. I think the message was a very important one that went surprisingly unnoticed by a lot of viewers and even critics.
io 90 I understand where you're coming from, but I think Swiss Army Man was beautifully paced and incredible.
I love the transitions where Wallace is all of a sudden in the scene and then Scott is all of a sudden in a new place because to me it reminds me of when you get somewhere but you can't remember going there (either driving or walking on autopilot), showing how Scott is so inside his own head he is missing parts of his waking life
Now you made me want to re-watch Scott Pilgrim vs the world. I hope you're happy.
4:06 It's the fairy fountain theme ?
It's got to be the Fairy Mountain Theme! It's always a pleasure to hear this piece. Kind of odd though he didn't list it in the description ^^
It's part of the actual movie scene. That Scott Pilgrim bathroom scene plays the fairy fountain theme in the background.
MAVIIgalaxy
Oh, I see!
Yeah, Edgar Wright wrote a letter to Nintendo asking permission to use songs from The Legend of Zelda in his film, calling the Zelda theme "the nursery rhyme of this generation".
That's interesting, thank you for sharing!
A video on the genius of Sorkin and/or the West Wing?
YES
yes
Saying that the reason there are so many transitions in the film is because the film is about "a transition in Scott Pilgrim's life"... is sweet, and it sounds great to wrap up your video... but I'm positive that's not the case AT ALL. Wright most probably wanted to galvanize the adaptation adding some cinematic quality to the source material (the comic book itself). And... that's it.
Maybe you're right, but sometimes this kind of decisions happen at an unconscious level, even for the director, the whole "transition" idea.
Yes, subtext can be conscious and unconscious. You're totally right.
Let me guess: you're talking about the Tyrion scene aren't you? :)
+Domzo D.
hello!! could you please tell me what scene are you talking about?
+Domzo D.
hello!! could you please tell me what scene are you talking about?
When my English class was watching this movie and I missed the first day:
Me: What's the film about?
Friend: Um it's hard to explain... but basically it's like it's on drugs
Me: What?
_movie is on drugs_
If that description appeals to you, maybe check out A Scanner Darkly. It's a Keanu Reeves movie that was *profoundly* strange to watch.
@@WhiteWizard42 Redditors: inch resting
is that the great fairy theme from the legend of zelda at four minutes>??!?!?!?!?!??!?
Yes, it's from the actual movie.
Yeah, it's in the movie itself. If you're a gamer I can't recommend you watch it enough.
I know im a year late, but they apparently talked to Miyamoto himself to get the theme.

I like clicking things
tom ty its engulfing.it oddity B+
OMG That enternal sunshine of a spotless mind soundtrack
I think edger wright is much more talented than he gets credit for. his work is pure passionate innovation and I fucking love it.
The way you edit each of your videos' ending with a scene that relates to the words which conclude the essay gives me goosebumps all the time
i thought i was the only person who noticed how so smooth and cool the movies transitions were. they’re actually insane imo

The R's also ride the leading line in the tree branches.
Well stated.
I love finding a movie that seems trite, but discovering that it is a masterpiece.
This film is a masterpiece.
It is
kapatainkristian and a nerdwriter video in one evening YAAAASSSSSSS
Holy shit, this video was fucking awesome. Gotta revisit Scott Pilgrim ASAP.
This was amazing!
You can tell Wright, the cast, and everyone else involved loved making this movie, and put serious thought and effort into every little thing in it.
Well you continue to persuade me every week. Your In Bruges video is still one of my favorites of all time.
One thing which struck me with Antman is Wright's dialogue and monologue was there but the cinematography wasn't. Luis friend of a friend stories never had the right cuts in them.
This is incredibly fascinating.
Can you do something about Mr Robot?
The scene transition just at the time of reverse shot is bloody genius!
I wish more films could have the flow of Scott Pilgrim man, the transitions make me feel so connected every time and I'm glad you put it into words even if I'm years late on the video
Dude, youre amazing! Thank you!
Have fun in Venice!
Just watched this video again after watching Baby Driver. Go watch it!
Love Baby Driver. So good!
I recommend watching the Every Frame a Painting on Edgar Wright, if any of you have not.
Dude, please never stop making videos. Thank you for making me learn a lot about everything over the past years. Cheers, brother.
Scott Pilgrim is my favourite movie of all time, and now I can show people your video to show them some of the reasons why. Great vid, keep it up
yeah the bathroom scene was awesome. the school hallway was rolled in as he shut the door
Not the best of Wrights films, but very under rated, and I'm glad to see people starting to acknowledge some of its cinematic pluses.
I think you forgot to put in the link at 2:00?
Awesome video, you explain so well how this movie makes me feel. I love this movie specifically for the amazing editing and shots.
The scene transition of the bathroom it's very interesting, there is a behind the scenes that shows how they made it, they just changed the set in real time, they moved the floor and the lockers, the walls had wheels so they can move it fast... Awesome video btw!!!
Oh shit oh shit oh shit, I've never been so early, gotta think of something funny, got it: my life
they've taken care of every frame of this movie which even marvel can't do
I'm so happy with this episode. I think I watched Scott Pilgrim 20 times already.
These kind of transitions reminds me of Perfect Blue too, outstanding edits both movies
FINAL CUT PRO X!? Exile this man! (I love you)
Premier is where it's at.
YoungTheFish lol
YoungTheFish how much is premier ?
Tony from EveryFrameaPainting talked him into it haha
Oscar Tovar Like 40 bucks a month.
The fact that this channel only has 700 000 subscribers is disappointing.
These are incredibly interesting and educational videos!
Oh trust me, that is not dissappointing. If you're like me and stalk RUclips channel statistics, you'll find that his channel jumped from about 71,000 to 786,000 subscribers... in a little over a year. From September of last year till now.
Oh man! Didn't know that. Happy to see that he's growing!
it has 2 mill now yeap it does nice
Thank you.
That is probably one of the reasons why I love this film so much! Great video!
Make a video on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!!!
I think Mr. Robot and South Park would both be interesting case studies.
I'm a simple man, I see Scott Pilgrim, I hit Like.
Every single video I watch on your channel makes me appreciate the art of filmmaking much more.
4:00 I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT SONG FOR LITERALLY YEARS THANK YOU SO MUCH OMG
