Oho! Such a slick way to add some extra robustness to that joint, and strain relief as well. Also I want to add that I like how no-nonsense this video is. If there was a chef kiss emoji it would be here!

Excellent video. Gets right to the point, shows both ways (right and wrong) how to do it, and why you do it the right way. I wish all youtube how-tos were as succinct and informative. thanks!!!

My uncle used to tell me there 3 ways to do it. The right way. The wrong way and his way. If you did it his way you never had to do it again.

Thank you!!! All other videos say "do it" but never show how the heck you "do it."

Thanks for the vid, if not for this I'd do it wrong for sure.
I just started learning basic electronics and videos like this are helping beginners a lot!

Same thing i do when making new spark plug cables. I have spool of copper spark plug wire and a assortment of ends. Thats why your crimp pliers have a IGN crimp on them . I reuse the the terminals most of the time . That can be time consuming until you get good at it.

What is the screw for on the alligator clip?

Screwing down the wire if it's connect to a spade lead.

I, too, was wondering what the screw is for. Just bought some that have screws.

The part where the wire is folded outside the jacket yet the clip is supposed to be inserted "inside the barrel" confused me. If the wire is blocking entry into the insulation (which I guess is what's meant by "barrel"), how would it be possible to put the clip inside the "barrel"?

usually the cheap one has no barrel, just a hole and two "teeth" (for wire insulation crimping?), how to properly crimp those kind of type?

We believe you are talking about an alligator clip similar to the BU-70 like this: muellerelectric.com/product/bu-70/
Mueller’s clip has a “wire strap” that can be squeezed with needle nose pliers. Many non-branded alligator clips do not have this feature and must be soldered to obtain a good electrical connection. The “teeth” are only used to hold the wire insulation which acts as a strain relief.

Home Depot, Lowe's etc. Almost every hardware store has them. They are called Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper

What the screw used for ? Anyone know?

    • @jamescole3152

      Spade or ring connector.

Also these alligator clips are rated for a max current or amps. The way the video shows how to connect this to the wire is just not a good connection. 10 amps through such a poor connection.....

If my alligator clip gets too dry and the plastic around it tends to crack,is there anything i can do to make the plastic return to it's normal elasticity or at least less dry? Thanks if someone read this :)

OK I see you are the Mueller that is the manufacturer of lots of electronic parts. And I thank you for that. But what you just showed me in this video makes no sense at all. Common sense says that 95% of the inside of the barrel of the crimp connector is not even in contact with the hook up wire conductor. These alligator clips are crimp or solder. So soldering might work in some cases. In my application I am using this on a high temperature area. So solder might melt.
So I need to either crimp wire on or I can also use the screw terminal that comes on some of these. If I use the screw then I can use the right size crimp connector for my 14 AWG wire. If I use the alligator crimp barrel or hole I notice my 14 AWG wire is only 2mm diameter. And the barrel or hole of the alligator clip is 4mm dia. And therein lies the problem. The hole is too big for the wire. So I have been thinking about adding another piece of wire next to the wire, or doubling the wire so it fits the hole. Either that or nickel sheet shims around the wire to make the wire larger. I have to experiment to see what will work.
