Did you realize as you tell the stories of your grandfather here in the videos you are immortalizing him...these will be around for people to see even after we all are gone. I say it's a great time we live in....
Adventure van videos are the best. I need to get me one for sure. We always had an adventure Suburban growing up. If you have the luxury to have a spare vehicle around that you can keep your gear in and just jump in and go you will use it so much more often than you would if you had to pack and unpack all the time.
Pretty much yes to any video ideas you are willing to share. Even with the thousands of EDC videos on youtube I learned from yours in particular; you pushed me over the fence on carrying a handkerchief.
I would love to see both those videos. I believe I can speak for a lot of you subscribers in saying this. Every video you produce I look forward to watching and sharing with my wife and daughter. You are so humble in you words and enjoy the finer things in life. Both of those are very inspiring. Thank you my family appreciates all you do.
I really appreciate your philosophy. I have lived by this rule for a long time. I wish I knew who said it first, "Buy the best; that way you only cry once." It really is the way I choose to spend my money and I would have no problem paying 3-400 dollars for a high quality piece of equipment.
Enjoyed your video and all of your videos. My husband and I watch your videos every night and really enjoy all the videos. We learn so much and our interests are also a basic simple style and it is so nice to see there are other people have the same interests. Would like to see your video on your preparation for your trip to Montana. Have a wonderful trip. Safe travels.
You know, for a guy who doesn't do product reviews, you do product reviews. And I appreciate all of them! I know that when you do review a product that it is an honest unbiased report. I am grateful that you only review products that you use or that subscribers have questions on. Thank you so much for the information and more importantly for the honesty and integrity that you present it with!
I love reviews of stuff like this . I love your boot reviews made a lot of sense to me. I have since bought work boots same as your videos. It has been a game changer with my bad back and knees . This is a another hidden gem. I been a fan of your product reviews and how to vidoes for years.
You Bet, Lets see the modifications to the van and the saw cases. Great videos on the Filson clothing. Really enjoy the thought related to your grandfather. Les in Oregon
I can't remember when you said you'd be leaving for the class, so ... Blessing I your travels! I hope you and yours have a great time together traveling and attending the class.
Iv bought 3 coats in the last 5 years. 1st a B-3 bomber jacket RAF version 2nd a green mackinaw like yours 3rd a 1970 double mack like your grandfathers. All are amazing and haven't had cold enough weather for the double mack or B-3
Great video. I have my great grand father Truman's red and black Woolrich mackinaw. He passed on when I was 12, but farmed hard his whole life and got his use out of that coat, as am I still. And I have a green Filson just like yours that I found BRAND NEW in a second hand store for only $45! The woolrich is lined with chamois and has a flip-up collar that snaps tight at the throat. I reserve it for the harshest weather. Excellent coats, but not enough mobility for work with my long arms. I'd over heat anyway!
wranglerstar - Yes Cody, I'd love to see a couple of videos on the van modifications, that would be great brother. I enjoyed this video as well...boy that's a chunk of change.
I am glade to see that you have acquired or was gifted a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser and a green one at that. Just doesn't seem like you to purchase it out right. When I was watching I thought "Don't tell me a subscriber beat me to it as a gift. Will Mike beat me to the gift.. I have thoroughly enjoyed mine for several years now (green as well). To be honest with you Cody I came across your channel a couple of years ago to see what others thought about the Double Tins and found out we share the same love for "Might as well have the Best". I have warn mine snowboarding, skiing and to town as my wife does not alway approve of when and where I want to ware them. I enjoyed the review on the Cruiser. I can see that yours is a new one that will bring you warmth and use for many years to come.
Love the videos. Please show more about your van. It's funny, ever since the first video you did about setting up an adventure van I look at vans differently now. The information you are sharing with us is invaluable! You are providing a wonderful resource. Thank you!
Love the coat! Growing up in Michigan these coats were everywhere, deer season would roll around and everyone would have a Mac on in the woods. The map pouch made for a great spot to stuff your small game and there is no warmer coat then wool. Thanks for sharing.
I love all Filson apparel! But the Woolrich Classic Wool Hunt Coat is the next level up from the Mackinaw Cruiser. Its heavier duty and a classic that the Cruiser was modeled after. This wool hunting coat originated in the 1800s and is still as popular today. The rugged wool-blend shell wards off the fiercest weather. It's not only warm, but it sheds water, and the tight weave keeps out bone-chilling wind. Two-piece sleeve for a roomier fit; knit storm cuffs in sleeves. Four outer snap pockets, plus hand-warmer pockets and internal security pocket. Back stowage pocket originally designed to put game in. Under-collar tab keeps collar up to hold out cold and breezes. Fully lined body and sleeves. Button front covered by storm flap. In the Woolrich Hunt Plaid! Another great option!
I have both, and I like both. I have to say though, that the Filson is just more durable and heavy-duty. I know it will last me longer, even though I wear it more often.
25 years ago I was given a Korean War wool trench coat by a coworker who found it in his attic. I'm 44 today and I still wear it. As a younger man I hitch hiked around the mid west during the winter and on occasion slept overnight under bridges in this coat and was never cold. Its been the best coat I've ever had. Some winters arent even cold enough to use the coat. Its got to be in the 20's for me to want to use it, or be a situation I know I will be outside all day. I've seen others just like it on Ebay from $25-$100. I see Russian ones also that are gray in color that I'm sure would be just as warm. My coat is green. If anybody is into military history and wants a nice warm coat that will last forever I recommend looking into ones of these old coats. There may be shorter waist coats available also. Ive seen some coats come with brass buttons, and others like mine with green plastic buttons. Replacement buttons if you happen to lose one are easily found and only a few dollars. I get my coat dry cleaned every couple of years and it only costs me $2. I consider that a bargin.
This channel is what it is because of videos like "van upgrades" and "cross cut saw cases being made". Thank you for the time you put into this. Yes, basically do all the videos you think of.
Mike that was a vary nice gift! Was lucky to find a similar shirt- coat from "King of the mountain" brand wool. Which was advertised in my local newspaper w/ matching bibs. For $100 and it fit me perfectly!! What a find close to $1200 worth of wool. If purchase new. The same guy selling this wool sold me a hunting "heater bodysuit" also for $100 dollars which at the time sold for over $500 new. That was worth the 22 mile drive go pick it up! Another great video thanks!
Your Grandad's coat is a better build and will out perform the Cruiser to keep out wind and rain from going up your sleeve if your riding a horse or a 4 wheeler or driving a jeep In the winter..Winter Air going up your sleeve is no fun! Especially at night. If I'm gonna spend 300 to 400$ dollars on a jacket I would want it to have lining and cuff's and hand warmer pockets for that amount of money. I get and respect the plain and simple look etc but I think it should have a bit more of a plain and simple price from 120 to 150$ if its not gonna perform as much. As Survivalist Base Camp pointed out. You Can get amazing deals on used Vintage Wool from all the key old school wool companies Drybak,Penn & Rich,Johnson,Chippewa,Woolrich,Bemidji,Wind Ward,H.W,Carter and sons,Filson,J.C Higgins,Codet,Big Bill,5 Brothers,Pendleton,LL Bean,Towncraft.Soo Woolen Mills on and on and on that are in amazing shape and save thousands. And as much as I hate to say it 80% of the jackets/coats were made better back then to top it off.Buying something brand new is a great feeling all in all. But finding a Wool jacket that's almost 60 years old and that's basically brand new and still has 100 years in it is even more of a thrill. One of my Top 5 most favorite wool Jackets ever devised by man would be the KOM 10 ring for super super cold weather. And for those who say they don't like itchy wool all you need to do is just look for the coat or shirt to have Virgin Wool in the details and you will be 100% Comfortable. Nice Video and Nice Jacket...There's just a good feeling you get when you wear wool. Respects
I bought an Iron Range Winter Coat from Duluth Trading company this fall. Basically a Macknaw made out of 13oz firehose. Even has the map pocket (they call it a glove box) Durable as all get out and all the features of a true mackinaw. I especially like the arm gussets for freedom of movement and fleece lined pockets .
Thanks for showing us your jacket. Love the history and how it’s been passed down through the family. Reminds me a lot of the m1951 wooI field shirt I have.
Got a good load of Filson stuff and like the brand. The Mackinaw Cruiser is something I’ve consider for a while and your review was helpful. Greetings from an up north farmplace, Sweden.
I've been lusting after one of the Filson Double Mackinaw Cruisers that Cabela's carries for years. They were around $250 when I first really noticed them and wanted one. That was back in my high school days in the 1990's, and they're over $400 now. If I could come up with the spare cash I'd love to have one, but, like you said, it's just so hard to justify the purchase. I've been wearing the same Columbia parka since 1998. Even in temps as low as -38° (not including wind chill) it has always kept me warm, and it still looks like new.
That is a wonderful garment. One day I shall have one. A few months ago I was lucky enough to find a wool Boy Scout jac-shirt on clearance at the Boy Scout store for $28. It's not a Filson, but it is well made and much higher quality than most department store goods. I'm now thinking about buying a second one to add a few extra pockets, working epaulets, and maybe a back pouch, sort of a roll-your-own Mackinaw.
Yeah, always enjoy seeing adventure van videos. Thanks for sharing all the info. you share. I always enjoying watching and anticipating what will be next. Thanks you!
This is a good look at a Filson mackinaw. I've never owned one but here in the hot and humid South it gets plenty cold enough to justify a mackinaw wool vest. I have one and it is one of the warmest garments I own.
I prefer the jacket I just got in december. ROUGHNECK INSULATED WASHED CANVAS HOODED JACKET at Cabelas. It is insulated with thinsulate and is not bulky at all. I have worn it 50ft. in the air on a manlift 10 degrees with 30 mph winds and I just flip the hood up and I am toasty. Wore it in rain and it didn't get wet. Even the pockets are insulated. Cold hands are warmed up after a minute in them. I once dragged my arm over a bow saw blade and about had a heart attack. Thought I had ruined the coat. Nope. Not a mark on it. For $65 it has got to be the best coat I have ever had.
Thanks for sharing, I may actually get this jacket. Nicely in my budget and looks like the kind of thing I have been looking for. A question though, how are the sizes in relation to real sizes? As in are the smalls actually small and the larges large. I know they have some dimensions on the site but I find that doesn't always directly translate to feels the right size. Also "Wore it in rain and it didn't get wet." It's funny how that's actually a phrase that catches my eye as an outstanding trait in the price bracket haha
Sizes are a little off. get one size larger than normal. I was gonna scotchgard it but I got caught in a good rain and the coat wasn't wet. I fully expected it to get soaked but it didn't. Shocked me. And I do like the mackinaw's but unfortunately I can't wear wool. Thinsulate fibers absorb less than 1 percent of their weight when submerged in water.
I'd love to see the adventure van modifications, as well as the new carrying methods. Regardless of whether I ever use the information in any given video, I still get a taste of your life philosophy, an escape from the mindlessness of today's world, and above all the inspiration to push myself to do better. Every video you make benefits me and thousands of others. For all that you do, I thank you. Know that when I do right, your philosophy is guiding me, and when I do wrong, its your voice telling me to make it right.
Well your Grand Farther just like to buy things just once! I been doing that myself for decades. I just retired a Puma Duke, Its still in excellent shape but any further sharping will start taking the Factory markings. I had it for 46 years and countess numbers of Deer Elk Moose and Caribou been dressed and broken down with it. On of the knife guys tells me that its a serious collectors item now because well Puma makes knifes to sell and well the price point has to be right.- Right now I am using a Buck 110, a fine well made american knife. It was a temp thing till I decided what I wanted, the buck is well it should see me thru what ever hunting I have left.
I have a Lester River and I know exactly what you mean about the liner (or lack there of). I went to the thrift store and got a couple of the nylon golf wind shirts and it works great when I'm working with my Boreal shirt on.
I lucked out and finally scored a vintage 100% Wool Woolrich Mackinaw in a similar pattern to your grandads. I couldn't believe the price on it at the thrift store and it was in my size so I grabbed it quick. On the way out I found another Mackinaw; a more modern version by Old Navy in a 73% Wool Blend and it's the one I use most with it's more modern fit, but the Woolrich is a treasure for sure. Oh yeah...I paid $5. each and both are in pristine condition. The Woolrich has a nice red lining with hunters and ducks on them. It's just pure quality through and through.
Just purchased one of these off eBay. Looks to be in outstanding condition. Only paid $129 for it. Really looking forward to receiving it. Thanks for the review Cody.
Well I got my first item of Filson last week. The Machinaw Cruiser vest in green. I am lucky enough to have a Filson dealer not far from me. I must say its a gorgeous vest. Wife approved of course. She likes it. Next up is the jacket and liner, might take a little time though.
I've been eyeing those coats every month those filson catalogues come in. I've been wearing wool pants this winter and will never go back to lesser pants when going out for long periods in the cold.
I recently purchased one almost identical to your red one, only in green. It's made in Canada. Pioneer sporstwear which no longer exists. Can't find very much info on however. It looks like it's never been worn. Actually purchased it to sell it, I think I paid around $20.00 for it and have seen them go for over $200.00.
I have been applying this principle for years now and people used to make fun of me but I'm still using my tools and electronic equipment while they spent a lot more money on buying cheap stuff than I did buying the "expensive stuff" once :D
Good advice Cody. Many nowadays don't look at the long term. If you buy quality and take good care of it, you will have it forever for less than the cost of buying multiple cheapies. It's sort of like an investment.
I've been in search for a good filson wool cruiser for about a year and a half now and they are hard to find. Although i did score on a vintage chippewa makinaw wool jacket for my wife. Its excellent quality, all double stitched with great materials. Filson to me is second type of cool though and ill just enviously keep looking until im able to snag one. Great video series Cody.
I think the adventure van needs an A-Team like theme song. Would love to see another video one it. Also my wife heard the "you have my permission" part, but she's not taking the bait. :-)
Great video sir! I do believe they offer liners for the Mac Cruiser. They quit putting them in so you could use them with or without. The video on making your crosscut saw cases would be awesome. I was given two, that have been in my wife's family for 70 years, this past weekend.
I'd like to see your projects Cody. My grandfather had a coat just like your grandfather's. I don't think it was the same brand but it looks identical. As always, thank you for sharing your time with great videos.
My Filson, was a graduation gift (1982), I were it for hunting, fishing, camping, and plowing snow. The only thing I put on under it is a T-shirt, or sweet too much. It cost $350 new in 1982. At Whites Boots they go for $350 to 450. It's my best cold weather jacket!
I just went to the FIlson site and looked at all of their clothing. I almost shorted out my keyboard. I especially like the vests. I used to wear vests back in high school. The "disco craze" made them popular, but I was thinking of Han Solo when I got mine. My wife and I are going to start going to thrift stores close to upscale neighborhoods now. Pray that I find some of these!
Fyi, hanksclothing.com has some great Filson products for 50% off right now, this jacket is one of them along with the gray vest Cody wears too. Stay warm!!
Yep, Even Dave Ramsey, (The get outta debt guru) couldn't argue with buying $500. boots and $400. coats as long as you save up and pay cash for them. lol I have always bought quality items and you are right It generally last & last Thanks Cody !! P.S. I miss your son Need him in a video soon B-)
Did you realize as you tell the stories of your grandfather here in the videos you are immortalizing him...these will be around for people to see even after we all are gone. I say it's a great time we live in....
I also appreciate the narrations at the end of your videos. It adds so much extra and your stories always make me smile.
Adventure van videos are the best. I need to get me one for sure. We always had an adventure Suburban growing up. If you have the luxury to have a spare vehicle around that you can keep your gear in and just jump in and go you will use it so much more often than you would if you had to pack and unpack all the time.

Cody were interested in any new videos! Its always nice to hear the stories about you and your grandad.
I said finer and meaning to say. Simple pleasures and value in products and life.
I really appreciate your philosophy. I have lived by this rule for a long time. I wish I knew who said it first, "Buy the best; that way you only cry once." It really is the way I choose to spend my money and I would have no problem paying 3-400 dollars for a high quality piece of equipment.

I have my grandpas, cruiser that he bought in the 50s-60s, I love it!
Nice,
You Bet, Lets see the modifications to the van and the saw cases.
Great videos on the Filson clothing. Really enjoy the thought related to your grandfather.
Les in Oregon
Van Mods... yes!!! Thanks for all you do Cody, and God bless you and yours on your trip!
I would absolutly love to see you build a case for your saws. Another look at the van would be nice too. Have fun and safe travels.
Great heads up on this jacket, looks like a shopping trip to the states is on the cards :) Kind regards from London ~Peace~
I can't remember when you said you'd be leaving for the class, so ... Blessing I your travels! I hope you and yours have a great time together traveling and attending the class.

Great vids on the mackinaw cruiser! And here is one vote for videos on the adventure van modifications.
thanks for the Cruiser intel. Would love to see update on the van. Have a great trip!

Yeah im in charleston SC. Were lucky to have 2 full freezes a winter
I love Filson clothes got my first cruiser this year for the most part I was able to wear it all winter long in Alaska.
Your Grandad's coat is a better build and will out perform the Cruiser to keep out wind and rain from going up your sleeve if your riding a horse or a 4 wheeler or driving a jeep In the winter..Winter Air going up your sleeve is no fun! Thanks for showing us your jacket. Love the history and how it’s been passed down through the family. Reminds me a lot of the m1951 wooI field shirt I have.
I never thought I would find video's on a coat interesting ...... *but I did* !!
Yes, I would really enjoy a video on a crosscut saw case and how it's made.
I just pulled the trigger on a Boreal Shirt by Lester River Bushcraft . Well made well designed and works as all good wool would.
Thanks you!
Yes, want to see the van upgrades. Love your dad's van u posted a long time ago
Let's see that adventure truck! Awesome material as always! Keep up the good work !
You never share anything unimportant or boring so please...feel free. Looking forward to watching the videos you proposed.
This is a good look at a Filson mackinaw. I've never owned one but here in the hot and humid South it gets plenty cold enough to justify a mackinaw wool vest. I have one and it is one of the warmest garments I own.
Let's see the trip preparation videos! Van and saw cases!
German wool military pants, wore them up in Alaska on the fishing boats. Wool is great to stay warm when wet.
Definitely want to see what you've done to modify the van!
love to see the van and the storage of the saws!
It's our USDA FS high-end jacket issue, I have one. What I really want is the Mackinaw overalls and the vest!
Also "Wore it in rain and it didn't get wet."
It's funny how that's actually a phrase that catches my eye as an outstanding trait in the price bracket haha
Sizes are a little off. get one size larger than normal.
I was gonna scotchgard it but I got caught in a good rain and the coat wasn't wet. I fully expected it to get soaked but it didn't. Shocked me. And I do like the mackinaw's but unfortunately I can't wear wool.
Thinsulate fibers absorb less than 1 percent of their weight when submerged in water.
williamwazere Now to let you know, the outer cotton shell does get damp but the moisture does not transfer into the coat.
You sound poor
I'd love to see both of those videos!
It was a temp thing till I decided what I wanted, the buck is well it should see me thru what ever hunting I have left.
the adventure van video would be great, enjoy watching.
I think both video ideas you mentioned would be great! Keep 'em coming!
I have a Lester River and I know exactly what you mean about the liner (or lack there of). I went to the thrift store and got a couple of the nylon golf wind shirts and it works great when I'm working with my Boreal shirt on.
Cody ... There is something to the way you say, "My son." You say it with such pride. I totally understand.
I would also love a van update. I'm planning on building an off-road teardrop type trailer and the van started me on this path with some great ideas.
yes please show us the mods of the van and the saw prepping ! reviews too :) that looks like a great jacket Cody.
Yes to the van and to the saw case.
Just purchased one of these off eBay. Looks to be in outstanding condition. Only paid $129 for it. Really looking forward to receiving it. Thanks for the review Cody.
Van upgrades and saw cases , yes please.
Thanks
yes, i would like to see your van...
That would be a great video with the van and the saw!
Thanks for the info regarding the Filson Makinaw Cruiser
Well I got my first item of Filson last week. The Machinaw Cruiser vest in green. I am lucky enough to have a Filson dealer not far from me. I must say its a gorgeous vest. Wife approved of course. She likes it. Next up is the jacket and liner, might take a little time though.
I've been eyeing those coats every month those filson catalogues come in. I've been wearing wool pants this winter and will never go back to lesser pants when going out for long periods in the cold.
love the jackets. I've always wanted a filson cruiser.
Yes I'd love to hear about your modifications to the adventure van
For Wanda, how about a lite 1/2 x 1 frame around the blade to stiffen and protect, or 1/4 in plywood cut to fit.
Definitely interested in both the van modifications and casing of the saws videos!
I would love to have one of those! Love the green color too!
Yes I'm interested in the crosscut saw cases
I think the adventure van needs an A-Team like theme song. Would love to see another video one it. Also my wife heard the "you have my permission" part, but she's not taking the bait. :-)
Yes please on both the van modification and the saw cases videos!
Yes Please... lets see more of your Adventure Van
I am a covert to wool jackets mainly tweed so warm. also would love to see A-team style van Modifications, with gatling gun
Please show more on the adventure van, keep up the good work
Yes indeed a video on the venture van
I have never looked back, and agree so much about the cosy. I lovedmy singlesomuch I got a double and thatis something, bombproof.
Have always wanted a Mac. Couldn't afford one so bought a penelton someday though. Your videos are GREAT! !!
I'd definitely be interested in seeing the adventure van update
yes, very interested in seeing what you did to the van. by the way, lovve all your videos, thannk you for all your hard work.
Also have a look at empire wool & canvas company. they make some really nice kit! I want their Jackpine Vest someday.
Stay warm!!
Filson is simply the best I have worn Filson for 20+ years and will wear them tell I die well worth the money every cent. Great video.
Love it. And i would love to see your packing for Van adventure. Great channel.
That is a handsome jacket! I dig wool everything! And yes, ADVENTURE VAN video, please!
both videos sound great
Very much interested, can't wait for the new uploads!
